It is Ledezma, who you’re getting. Former rule 5’er on the awful 2003 club. Lefty that can throw his fastball in the mid 90’s and has a couple other decent pitches. Location is the big thing for him because the fastball doesn’t have a lot of movement. Can start or relieve.

The Braves have traded left-handed relief pitcher Macay McBride to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for left-handed reliever Wilfredo Ledezma.
Ledezma has appeared in 23 games for the Tigers this year, all in relief. He is 3-1 with a 4.79 ERA. In 35 2-3 innings he has allowed 38 hits and 26 walks while striking out 24.
For his career, he is 15-18 with a 5.15 ERA.

Wonder if the Braves intend to use Ledezma as a starter. He has started in the past, so that gives the Braves a bit more versatility than what they had with McBride.
It is a little concerning that there isn’t a reliable LOOGY in the bullpen now. Say what you will about Macay, but he was pretty effective vs. left-handers.
The artist formerly known as Unknown
on June 20, 2007 at 4:38 pm
Very interesting, I would have moved Thorman to 7th with righty pitching and the way he has been hitting…
Specifically, “Braves believe Ledezma (5.15 career ERA, 15-18 record in 106 games inc. 33 starts) can be a starter in the future, if they want to use him that way. But John Schuerholz said they haven’t discussed when that might happen; not now. He’s a reliever now.”
Cary
on June 20, 2007 at 4:46 pm
Ledezma had a 4.29 ERA in 7 starts last year. He has yet to start a game this year for the Tigers, however.
And last year he held lefties to a .241 avg/.282 obp/.304 slg, so maybe he’s just been unlucky this year vs. them. We can only hope.
I wouldn’t mind if he was given a chance to start in place of Davies since Carlyle has done well enough and Chuck James has been decent.
Justin Parker
on June 20, 2007 at 4:50 pm
Sounds like a change of scenery trade to me, both ways.
I really wanted Macay to do well, but, like many, I’d lost all patience with him & his lack of control. Big pressure, small pressure—didn’t seem to matter. They guy was just wild.
Of course, Ledezma’s numbers don’t do a lot to inspire confidence either.
And no problem with the Andruw benching. I kinda thought he wouldn’t sit until IL games were finished, but this is a good call. Two days to clear his head. Why not?

I would have rather sent McBride back down (if he has options) than give him away. Granted they weren’t going to get much if they traded him now, that’s why I would have rather had him stretched out to become a starter or let him work out his struggles than just give away a former first rounder with upside. I guess I just always saw the potential for another Mike Stanton there, I don’t see much upside for Ledezma.

What happens if both Harris and Diaz have awesome games tonight and the Braves score a lot of runs? Answer – nothing – things go back to normal on Friday.
On McBride, I think letting him go was solidified during his time in Richmond. They tried him as a starter and I think they concluded that his control would never be good enough to start and his career as a reliever is limited with his control issues. I don’t think this was anything new to most of us, but they wanted to give him every chance.
McBride and Ledezma’s minor league rate stats H/9, HR/9, BB/9, K/9), are virtually identical, but Ledezma has retained most of his control (which still isn’t great) at the major league level. He’s compensated by giving up a lot more HRs. Eh.

Ok, here’s some things I tried to talk about earlier, not to reliver old history too much, but:
1. Definitely cut a deal for Matt Morris. We badly need another starter. But also, why aren’t we also talking to Kenny Williams to get in the way of a proposed Lastings Milledge for Mark Buehrle deal?
My major concern of course in dealing Escobar is a possible Chipper DL stint.
2. I am perfectly OK dealing our crappy, lefthanded reliever (McBride) for the Tigers crappy lefthanded reliever (Ledezma). I don’t see a difference between the two–OK, Ledezma weighs 80 less lbs.
But sometimes, you give me your crappy pitcher for my crappy pitcher…it’s a change of scenery deal for both teams and you hope for the best and both teams can hope that each guy changing locales will help them.
Ledezma, maybe finally getting a shot in the National League, might do something with it. Let’s hope so.
I am also psyched to see Joey Devine get a shot as well.

Bobby got sick of McBride’s hot-and-cold act. He wanted someone who is consistently mediocre.
Oh well… lets get back to the riveting Andruw sucks conversation. 🙂
Do you think that if Hampton wasn’t hurt and hitting every day he would have better overall numbers than Andruw right now.
K. Johnson 2B
W. Harris CF
E. Renteria SS
C. Jones 3B
B. McCann C
J. Francoeur RF
M. Diaz LF
S. Thorman 1B
B. Carlyle P
Andruw sucks. 🙂
Hey, no Andruw in the line up! Wow…
Very interesting, I would have moved Thorman to 7th with righty pitching and the way he has been hitting…
DOB has some thoughts from Schuerholz about the trade in his blog: http://www.ajc.com/blogs/content/shared-blogs/ajc/braves/index.html
Sounds like a change of scenery trade to me, both ways.
The trade is…whatever.
Why not?
Challenge for challenge trade. I do like Ledezma’s ability to start. Could be another option…
If anyone cares, there’s a picture of my brother and I on the Gameday Shots part of braves.com.

Not the greatest picture of me, but I’m on the left. As you can see, my brother and I are identical twins…

Eh.
well, i think mcbride had shown us what he had. he’s been far less than great lately, why not try someone else and see if he’ll pull a willie harris on you?
nothing fancy but maybe the shakeup will help.
GO BRAVES!
great start to this game huh. We seem to work wonders on slumping superstars.
what channel is the game on? espn is running news
Ummm why am I seeing ESPN News and not the Bravesssss
Ahh FSN South got it. ESPN says its their game…wierd
yet another chapter in espn’s abuse of the braves! 😉
ESPN is probably blacked out in some areas. I have it on ESPN in PA cause we don’t get the Fox channel that it’s on.
I’m getting the game, but I don’t know if that’s a good thing.
UGH
Well this should be a fun nite..
wow
Well…shucks.
This is making me physically ill. JS needs to deal for a starter TONIGHT.
Defensive help…that was hardly noteworthy.
Our offense is so gutless when they get behind.
This is gonna be a long night.
Maybe I’m heading to the gym a little early tonight. Yuck.
ok, so 5 runs in the 1st. golden girls anyone?
Hey ububba, where in NY do you live?
Wow. This is pretty embarrassing.
Give me a break already.
Time to get the long relievers going.
Maybe McBride can drop Carlyle off in Richmond on the way to Detroit.
Booooooo. Get Caryle out. It’s Vulture time.
I was th
I may just be mad or something, but I can’t remember a worse pitching performance than this in recent memory.
This start would make M*rk R*dm*n proud.
I guess Vulture worked last night. I missed the game.
It seems McBride is better than Ledezma right now, but Ledezma could be better down the line. Whatever, McBride pissed me off more often then not.
this game sucks.
So how long before Renteria and Chipper get pulled from the game?
Why isn’t Villarreal the 5th starter again?
carlyle isn’t the magic bullet tonight, but how long did we expect this to last?
and i hope our guys start throwing at those jerks after they do their dance.
Is Villareal our savior now?
Remember, Jeremy, we did get three decent-or-better starts out of Carlyle before this. Given our absence our alternatives, he deserves another chance.
I doubt the Braves deserve one from us tonight, though.
God Francoeur is a bum.
Oops, I was Keith Lockhart on this computer and forgot to change back.
Not our savior. I think he could at least keep us in the game for five lousy innings, which is all you can ask for.
Villareal is a big question mark for me. He’s a better option, but that’s not saying much today.
We are in trouble, there is nothing more important in baseball than pitching, and we just don’t have any consistency in that department.
There’s a reason Carlyle has bounced around baseball for the better part of his career. He’s not very good.
At least Villa has somewhat of a serviceable track record.
I’m more impressed with the regularity with which the Braves fall behind- and not always because the other team scores in the first or second innings. We get no early-inning offense at all.
Why is Carlyle hitting for himself?
If we need to throw at someone’s face, we’ll put Villa in. I hope we acquire a new starter before we entertain a Villareal start.
“tightness in j.d. drew’s quad.” i’ve never heard that before
whatever happened to Anthony Lerew?
Is he still on the DL?
Alex R. has been trying to post all day but is getting caught by the spam filter. This is the responsibility of the Andruw Jones Crime Syndicate, Scott Boras, CEO. When the AJCS is brought down, he will return.
PS. He also says that getting Matt Morris is a good idea and I can testify that he said that before Carlyle got destroyed.
Man, it’s nice to actually hear a Braves announcer discuss something cerebral like Run Differential…
Can we at least get a base runner and not have him erased on a double play? Is that too much to ask? What does it say about the Braves play when that is my one wish for them?
And why is the Boston pitcher taking the ball with him back to the dugout each inning?
Rissa I was wondering the same thing…
so now the announcers are discussing the “fishiness” of tavarez and his shananigans.
also, why does tavarez have long sleeves on? that is also odd.
Wouldn’t surprise me if he’s doctoring the ball. He is getting a ton of late movement and sink.
i noticed that also.
Tavarez was suspended when he was with the Cardinals for loading the ball with pine tar.
this is really hard to watch. i get a little sick to my stomach every time the sox do something good and i hear that crowd.
I wish the Braves would just ask the ump to check…
I wish there were a mercy rule.
We stink tonight. This is really depressing.
i wish i had an icecream
let’s see if this works.
we stink.
good job alex!
I wish we could win a few games. Go Twins.
woo hoo..the Andruw Jones syndicate has relinqueshed it’s hold over me!
yeah!
But we still stink, and really badly need another starter.
i think it’s time to bring in smitty
Just joining the game…now I wish I hadn’t gotten up….I guess we have to come back to reality a bit about Carlyle…
now we have him on the ropes
Glad that Bobby found a way to get Woodward in the game….
c’mon b-mac
I am also psyched to see Joey Devine get a shot as well.
was JS praying or screaming down instructions in that last shot?
nice play willie!
great catch by willie. andruw.. still not caring that he’s replaceable.
damn…he almost held on to that
ok, i’m out of here. let’s hope we can put something together this weekend.
Wtf is cox using soriano in a blowout?
My quick read on the trade–Ledezma is worse in the pen than McBride but might be better in the rotation than Davies.
braves trade rumors: braves trade whole team for new players.
Thorman strikes out swinging. Sun sets in west.
why is sammy soso so small now? he couldnt have possibly been on streroids, could he?
New name for the offense: The Chinese Army.
Because nobody kills more rallies.
Heh.
Poor Joey Devine–can’t the Braves just leave him in the minors for a full year?
The probable pitching matchups for the Tigers series:
Fri: Rogers vs. Smoltz
Sat: Verlander vs. Davies
Sun: Maroth vs. James
Verlander vs. Davies. Yuck.
I am glad I am headed to to a B&B that afternoon with my wife to take her away for her Birthday. I don’t think I will be missing out on this game.
Does that mean we will lose our next three, too, if Smoltz’s shoulder is still not right?
