I don’t really mind the Yankees anymore. Of the teams that sell out Braves home games for them, they’re easily my least non-favorite.

According to ububba, Andruw’s going to get going any day now 😉
(sorry, ububba, I can’t help but be a little sacastic…Andruw is currently the WORST everyday playe on the team by a landslide).
Hanan

Cox would never do it…but AJ should really be hitting 8th until he can get himself figured out. Torre did it with A-rod last year, so it isn’t unprecedented.
Jeremy
on June 18, 2007 at 2:43 pm
Andruw is not the worst everyday player on the team. Not even close. Thorman is worse. And McCann, factoring in his horrific defense, is worse.
Pedro

When Torre did that last year he almost got fired. If Bobby puts AJ 8th int he lineup, Terry Pendleton could lose his job…

Hanan

Well Pedro…something needs to be shaken up. AJ is a rally killer right now, and it is up to him, Cox and pendleton to figure how his problem and correct it. If something is hurting the team it has to be dealt with.
Dix
on June 18, 2007 at 3:03 pm
I don’t think AJ listens to Cox and Pendleton when it comes to his swing.
On another note, is anyone else really pissed off that Perlozzo has been fired by the Orioles, when the reason Mazzone left us to go to Baltimore was to be the pitching coach for his good friend when he got the managerial job.
Unknown
on June 18, 2007 at 3:05 pm
Jeremy,
Have you watched AJ the past couple weeks, he is looking awful at the plate. In fact he gets worse and worse. Thorman and McCann are making contact and swings are coming around. AJ is just looking awful…
I have no idea if Andruw will begin to fire. He may remain in the Twilight Zone all season. I’m just saying that, if we’re gonna be any good, we’re gonna need him to produce.
Drop him in the lineup, minimize the rally-killing damage, whatever, but he’s not sitting, not for the money he’s making and not when you take his history into account.
Willie Harris has been a nice player, but he’s not replacing Andruw in CF unless & until #25 is traded or lost to FA.
Hanan,
Torre “demoted” A-Rod in the lineup for exactly one game: Game 4 of the ALDS. I wouldn’t consider that much of a precedent.
Re: Skip Caray’s slow delivery.
Also, from previous thread: Skip quit drinking about 10 years ago.
Skip seems fine on the radio but pretty clearly was struggling (for some reason) on TV yesterday. I have no idea why and won’t speculate.
Hanan
on June 18, 2007 at 3:18 pm
Whether it be one game or a week…I could care less at this point. Cox needs to put the lineup together giving the team the best chance to score runs and succeed. Andruw looks completely lost at the plate right now, but his defense is still stellar so benching him is out of the question. However, I think you have to minimize the impact his offensive ineptitude has at the moment. Lots of players get moved around in the order to help them get out of funks. AJ is no different.
KLB
on June 18, 2007 at 3:20 pm
He may not be struggling as much as Andruw, but don’t forget about Francouer. His OPS is .606 for June with 17 K’s.
Maybe Bobby should let both of them have a day off?
If Andruw & Frenchy aren’t going to contribute, we aren’t going to win. Dropping them in the lineup is a temporary move. We don’t have adequate replacements for them.
I’m sorry, but I find the conversation pointless.
Kenny
on June 18, 2007 at 3:33 pm
I am interested to see what will happen to Leo if he gets let go from the Orioles too? How long till Braves’ fans demand his hiring?
For all the talk of the offense we are still 5th in the league in runs scored, and eventually the home runs will return. The pitching still scares me, specifically the number 3 starter.
Brian J.
on June 18, 2007 at 3:35 pm
When do we start the collection to bring Mazzone back?
Drop Andruw to 6th and bench Frenchy for Diaz. Those would be the logical moves, but they won’t be made. We just have to hope Andruw gets hot before the season gets away.
Andruw’s current slump might be the most expensive in history- he could easily play his way out of $50 million this year.

Me too. Andruw, Francoeur, and McCann aren’t hitting. None of them are going anywhere. Either they will start hitting and we will have a chance, or they won’t and we’ll keep sucking.
For me, the only good thing about losing Andruw to free agency next year will be forcing the ‘Blame Andruw’ crowd to come up with a new schtick.

ububba,
Let me start off by saying you are always one of the best and smartest posters in here so if you say something, I always tend to listen.
That being said, you are dead wrong here. Andruw is a drain on the entire organization right now. he’s killing the middle of the lineup.
Sure, I would take him hitting 7th or 8th over 4th, that’s a drastic upgrade for the Braves, but I would abso-friggin-lutely take Diaz and Willie Harris everyday over Andruw–for right now. Sure, the Diaz and Harris hitting machines may not last. They could slump next week.
But since both are 2 of the Braves 4 or 5 hottest and most reliable hitters, why on God’s green earth, when we can’t score runs, can’t win more then 2 straight, and have at least 3 mediocre to awful starters, would you continue to play a guy hitting .208 (no matter how much friggin money he’s making) over any guy hitting well over .300.
I have lost count how many games that Diaz or Harris’ bat has pulled this team out of the fire.
here’s the thing: the name on the back of the jersey shouldn’t matter–ever. That’s what you are wrong. Wins and losses matter. Scoring runs over rally killing strikeouts–matter.
I am sorry, ububba…I love you man, you’re awesome. but you are so completely wrong on this.

It’s hard to win when you have several guys struggling at the same time–right now, that’s Andruw, McCann, Francoeur, and Thorman. There’s not a whole lot of tinkering you can do when that many guys are struggling. As Ububba points out,if your best players don’t play well, you don’t have much chance to win regardless of the lineup.
Schilling is at least right-handed but given his history against the Braves, it’s hard to be too optimistic tonight unless James pitches really well.
Brian J.
on June 18, 2007 at 3:38 pm
My comments are disappearing…
I think Ububba’s only half right- Andruw’s glove keeps him from dragging the team down when he’s in a slump, so long as he’s dropped in the order. Frenchy, not so much. Whatever plate discipline he picked up in April is gone. Give Diaz his at bats.
Hanan
on June 18, 2007 at 3:39 pm
AJ has already been moved down in the lineup earlier this year. I’m personally tired of seeing him whiff/pop up with RISP in the middle of rallies. Pretty soon Chipper is going to get pitched around, and then it will be an even bigger issue.
I hope AJ gets out of it, but right now he is not showing me anything, and this impact needs to be minimized.
Mike
on June 18, 2007 at 3:43 pm
I like Chuckie. I know he is a bit inconsistent, but he is only in his second year. Give him some time.
I’m hoping Schilling has trouble getting the ball down tonight. He has completely dominated the Braves for a long time. However, he does give up the long ball. We will probably need five runs to take this one tonight. That is a tough task against Schilling, especially if our clutch hitting continues to tank.
By the way, some of the guys in here may find this amusing, aggravating, or more evidence that ESPN is the most evil thing in the universe: Phil Fulmer, model citizen.
Alex R.
on June 18, 2007 at 3:50 pm
I hope someone harpoons fat Fulmer one day…he’s the most 2 faced S.O.B. in Colelge football.
Does anyone remember a comment from years ago. Bobby was saying how it takes players time to mature. He then said some never do or take longer and nodded at Andrew.
I just watched that mess in the Twin cities and Andrew was awfull at the plate which takes some thinking and great in the field which is largly talent and instinct. I am afraid we have fifteen million dollars worth of talent and a two-bit brain. Something has to be done to motivate this man. The bench or down in the order or both. If it embarasses him so what no more than he is doing to himself at this point.

Who cares about Baltimore…should have kept Davy Johnson, but back to the Braves. For some reason, Andruw is not my main concern. If he gets anyworse he will be batting 7th or get some days off. However I don’t trust Diaz…
My MAIN concern is Brian McCann. He looks AWFUL at the plate and the in the field. I mean damn. Also I notice as Francouer avg. starts to slide down close to .270 he is hacking at the 1st pitch again….wasn’t he over .300 like 3 weeks ago?
Also Thorman swings can be picked apart by a decent pitcher…how he got 3 hits yesterday I will never know and is he too stiff to play 1st…needs to stretch or something. What was that?
Worst part of this is that we can’t even enjoy Andruw’s walk year. When this team fails in the playoffs because he pops up with the bases loaded in the ninth inning of a one run game, that’s all we will remember.

Which is worse?
(1) Being “two-faced,” wherein you are (a) incredibly generous with your time and money, and (b) prone to getting cought up in the win-at-all-costs SEC mentality.
(2) Being one-faced, when that face is repeatedly wishing injuries (or death) on people and making fun of some for physical appearances and/or infirmities.
I’m not going to try to excuse Fulmer’s mistakes, but, goodness gracious, harpoon him? Don’t you think that’s a bit much, Alex? This is just a football coach, after all.

Icebox,
What makes you think hitting involves thinking and fielding is just instinct? I don’t get that. If anything, fielding might require more knowledge of the game–how to judge balls off the bat, where to play, when to go after a ball and when to play back. Hitting is largely a mechanical process (although obviously the better hitters have some plan when they go up to the plate); when your mechanics are messed up, you don’t hit, no matter how much you think. Every hitter in the history of baseball has slumps.
It seems to me there is an ugly subtext to saying that Andruw is not too smart. What about Mr. All American Jeffy Francoeur, he of the 11 walks last year. I didn’t hear anyone saying Francoeur isn’t smart.
As for saying AJ needs to be motivated, that is just typical fan crap. The guy isn’t trying to make outs. Why would you need to motivate? Do you mean saying, Andruw if you don’t get a hit, you have to go to your room without any supper? It’s absurb–I understand the frustration, but no one was talking about Andruw needing “motivation” in 2005. And, in my experience, embarrassing someone generally isn’t real effective motivation.

I watched him field under the dome it was amazing the balls he got under. Both my son and I commented on how he seemed to know exactly where to go — instinct and talent.
It is my understanding he listens to nobody about hitting and TP is very frustrated with him. Your correct hitting is talent and skill but you can learn to be a better hitter and at this time he doesn’t appear interested. The motivation is clearly not get a hit or go to your room. It is work with these people they can help.
Unknown, do not use that word. Also, the entire point is that Alabama and Tennessee boosters were doing the same thing but the NCAA decided to let Fulmer off because he tattled.

Uknown,
I am sure they NEVER EVER cheat at Tennessee. Please. Bama’s not innocent, but don’t throw giant, orange stones when your school is far from innocent.
Frankly, I firmly believe there’s crap that goes on at every major Division I college program.
The only difference is the NCAA will penalize the hell out of us ‘rednecks’ in the south (i.e. the massive penalties levied at schools like Bama or Auburn) yet Ohio State can basically have public enemy #1 as their running back (and a host of other blatant violations, so deep their A.D. Andy Geiger resigned) and yet NOT ONE SINGLE PENALTY EVER FOR FRIGGIN OHIO STATE.
The hippocracy in the halls of INjustice in Indianappolis towards the SEC and the free ride for everyone else (hello, Colorado and Gary Barnett anyone?) is frankly rather sickening.
Unknown

Well I understand that both schools were cheating and that most schools have or are cheating in some way. But you still can’t blame Fulmer if your an alabama fan.
It’s like order three beers at a bar, driving home and getting a DUI and for years saying the DUI wasn’t your fault but the bartender who served you the drink. In the end it’s your own dang fault..

Also, I’m 25 years old. For the first 18 years of my life, I was a die-hard UT fan—Dad is an alum.
Of course I pull for Vandy more now, having graduated from the school, but I’d still like Tennessee to beat the living snot out of every other SEC school, at least in football.
When Vandy starts making bowl games, I’ll worry about changing my feelings toward UT’s football team. As it is, I get no satisfaction out of their losing, because that doesn’t help Vanderbilt win outside of one game a year.

I get that as an Auburn fan you hate Bama…fine. That being said, you and everyone else in here, Mac, myself, Stu, everyone–should be far more offended by the injustice that only the SEC receives massive amounts of penalties while the Big Ten could practically sodomize Mother Theresa…and get away with it.
Alex, i don’t hate any school. I save my hate for people who deserve it. Actually, I dislike UGA more then Bama as i’m from atlanta. I do agree that the SEC is picked on quite a bit, but thats just how it is. Everyone hates the best and tries hard to bring it down. Just gotta try to keep your nose clean so that when they dig for stuff they just keep digging….
I could add — so I guess I will! — that what’s going on with USC and Reggie Bush is, letter for letter, what happened with Alabama and Antonio Langham, which resulted in massive penalties for Alabama, but USC is getting off scot-free.
Again with Fulmer, it’s not that Alabama was innocent, it’s that Tennessee was guilty of the same thing involving the same player but the NCAA agreed to let Fulmer off the hook for turning state’s evidence. Scumbag.
I really think if we can get one of these first two than we can win against Tavarez and Rogers, who will be making his 1st appearance back. 3 out of these 1st 4 would be awesome

McCann might be in a slump, but he is still hitting the ball hard and on a line every now and again. Andruw is either popping straight up, missing the ball by a foot, or looking at strike three, while Frenchy is jumping at the first pitch, and swinging at everything down and away again.
So yeah Andruw and Frenchy need to take turns sitting until one or both gets hot, or Diaz or Harris goes cold.
You can’t carry two automatic outs in a National league lineup, and definitely not three, so something has to change.

On a side note, many people are talking about the Braves who are struggling. Part of the reason that the struggles are happening over a longer period of time is look at the pitchers we have faced the past month. It’s remarkable how many top of the rotation guys we have faced. On top of that many of them are lefties, which contributes to the slumps of McCann and Thorman.
Try imagine being frustrated physically and mentially and then having to face Santana, Sabathia, Rich Hill, Cole Hammels almost back to back. It’s not easy to break out of those slumps as a lefty…This week’s number of righties should help out…

yes bobby likes davies and it’s easy to see why. he has the tools but he just can put it all together. i think it’s foolish to keep sending him out there to collapse after he’s made it through the order once. it seems like batters are adjusting to him after their first at bat and he’s unable to adjust or he just completely looses the ability to throw strikes.

bamachum,
I can see why you hate the redsox, as the braves struggle to beat them, similar to Bama agianst Auburn and Tennessee. 🙂
1. The NCAA couldn’t have made the charges without Fulmer.
2. The NCAA, because it let Fulmer off, decided to overpunish Alabama for something that (it has become pretty clear) was noninstitutional — done by boosters, not anyone in the program.
Atlanta’s record vs. Boston since IL play began: 23-16.
Last year’s Sawx sweep was the only one they’ve gotten vs. Atlanta. The Braves have swept them twice & even took 2/3 in ’04.

Dix,
Baseball is the only athletic program at Vandy (the only one I care about, anyway) for which I can remain upbeat about future seasons even after disappointing ends to present ones.
We were quite obviously the best team in the country this year, but our bats went cold in one weekend, and we’re done. We’ll be good again next year (and every year for the foreseeable future), so I’m confident our fortunes will change.
I mainly feel bad for guys like Price and Weathers (although not too bad, given the amount of money they’ll soon sign for) who were here in the initial stages of the powerhouse-building and won’t get to be here when we do win it all.
Would that the basketball and football teams give me such reason for optimism.

Andruw has been in this league way too long to be this stupid at the plate. There is no excuse for him to be trying to hit the ball to Alabama every time he swings.

ububba,
To answer your earlier remark, yes, we did win the other 2 Big ten games (and I was at the Dawgs win over Va. Tech at the Dome on 12/30) but there’s no reason we shouldn’t have won all 3. Fulmer sucks.
Back to this game…it makes me physically ill to see so many sickening, obnoxious, loud mouth Red Sox fans in Turner. Yuck. It’s just like when we play the Cubs…because they are all so obnoxious as well.
And by the way, I wasn’t on Braves Journal this weekend, but I hope the Journal crowd sided with San Diego in that Cubs-Padres brawl.
That effing loser Soriano was doing the same hot dogging with the Pods he did with us. I hope more pitchers will throw at his head. What a jerk.

Re: Escobar
It’s literally the dumbest thing ever if we send this kid (who can hit a ton) down when we are starved for offense yet we continue to have Woodward and Orr (I maintain Orr has more value then Woody) not to mention continue to have Andruw, McCann and Thorman, 3 guys killing us right now, in the lineup.
At least we should split McCann and Salty evenly or let Salty play first.
But I don’t care if Escabor is a reserve…but we have no shot for late inning magic with the kind of bench we have with no Escobar.
By the way, one of the awful things about living outside the Atlanta area is having to listen to this sickening a– kissing of everything Red Sox on the ESPN broadcasts.
KLB
on June 18, 2007 at 6:51 pm
I think the Braves should mandate that every player take the first pitch in each at bat. Look at the Red Sox approach – only Drew and Manny in one of their respective at bats has actually swung at the first pitch. Granted, Chuck James doesn’t have the best control, but still, if the Braves were in the same situation, you can bet that Francoeur and A. Jones would be swinging away instead of making the pitcher work.

I want to say something nice about Cox…way to go not waiting too long (as the norm) in getting relief help out there as soon as James started to falter. Bobby’s acting like he wants to win tonight–cool.
True, ububba, and I bet the Big 10ers have tossed that one your way as a face saving measure, but Florida absolutely killed Ohio State, as in humiliated, as in I can’t imagine a Buckeye fan watching the NFL draft with all the references to Florida’s demolition of tOSU**.
(** point for next post)
Meanwhile, Penn State won 20-10 on the strength of a 4th quarter fumble recovery for a TD from the PSU 10 yd line as the Vols were heading for the tie. So that could’ve easily been the other way.
And Arkansas manhandled Wisconsin, but couldn’t put points up. I am baffled as to how the Razorbacks lost. They held Wiscosin to negative 5 yards rushing (-5!!). They substantially led Wisky in total yards 368 to 201. They even had less turnovers 2 to 3. Oh yeah, Houston Nutt, 17-14 Wisconsin lucks it out.
Yeah, losses are losses, but the manner of them, competitive or no, is important to the discussion.
Besides, Big 10 #2 Michigan was flattened by USC 32-18, while SEC #2 LSU, dare I say, rolled over Notre Dame 41-14.

Would Tomo Ohka be worth a minimum salary pick up?
I don’t know, Alex. I’m wondering if batting in the 8-hole would have the same effect on Andruw that pulling him from Center did way back when. I’m not sure that I wouldn’t mind seeing his reaction to batting in Thorland.
Say Willie prior to this year played with a concentration level of a 7, a good level no doubt, but not quite enough given his talent to succeed consistently at the Major League level.
However, Willie said that is was a professional goal of his to play for the Atlanta Braves. His concentration level goes up to Eleven (okay, 9) and he plays beyond himself, but he’s able to keep it going because he is where he wants to be. He’s playing for more than himself. He’s playing for his state, the great state of Georgia and his Atlanta Braves! All heart.
How’s that for pop pyschology? By the way, Willie frackin’ Rules!!!!!!!!
Jeff M.

Or perhaps, someone told Willie that he should quit popping the ball up trying to hit 6 homeruns a year and instead just slap at the ball. I’m fairly sure that doesn’t explain all the difference. But it might explain some too. That along with Cary’s pop psychology might make some sense.

I believe that most rational baseball fans expect Andruw Jones to bounce back and finish at his career norms this year, .260 avg, 30-35 HR, 100 RBI, maybe minus a slight discount due to the terrible start.

The truth is that we have no chance to win the world series without the big guns bats. That fact, along with his glove and huge contract, will keep Andruw in the lineup. He will end up hitting around .252 with 32 homers and 106 RBIs and will get a huge contract from a big market team this offseason. There is no doubt about it.
If we fall out of the running (we won’t) he will get dealt somewhere and we’ll get some decent players in return.
I expect him to end up leaving as a free agent, however.
Unknown
on June 18, 2007 at 9:05 pm
Cary,
For Andruw to finish in the .250 – .260 range he must hit over .300 – .310 the rest of the season. He’s not going to have that year this season. In fact, there has only been one year he hit over .300 (2000).
I think he’s going to get better, can’t get much worse. But to expect his average to get into the typical AJ range is unrealistic.
Cary

I’d bet you some $$$ that he won’t be hitting .250 at the end of the year. Do you realize the hole he is in? It’s mid- June, not early May, too late to make that up. I will give you homers and rbi’s.

To the Andruw point, I agree to some extent that he might not make it all the way to his norms, but I think he can do .280 with power and approach his normal range. Granted, he looks worse than awful right now. But that’s baseball. It be’s like that sometimes.

I’d take that bet because I’ve seen him play for almost a decade. He’ll go on a tear and hit .429 in July or something. Does it every year. The only thing that may ruin my theory is if he keeps trying to hit 90 homers to get himself a big contract.
He’ll make it back.
Cary…I agree about the Nats…they have the season series (currently) over the Braves…which makes me feel no love for them, despite being here in Northern Virginia.
It just makes me angry that the Braves couldn’t take care of business against them earlier.

Rick Sutcliffe just announced we lost the A.L. East title last year. Huh. This is after he announced that Langerhans was still on our bench.
Does Sutcliffe even realize we’re in Atlanta?

Yeah, the fightin’ Nats rally from down 1-9 to the Motor City Kitties, but come up short.
They are not a great team, but they are fun to watch, and I wish them no ill will and perhaps have a soft spot for them (until they become a division threat anyway).
Can’t wait for the new stadium to open in D.C. Going to Braves games with the Nats is like attending a reunion. You see all your Southern buds and ladies out in force.
But an ESPN announcer and former Major Leaguer saying the Braves still have Ryan Langerhans and play in the American League East is completely inexcusable.
No, no, no, Alex. Greg Oden is in his 30s. Wily Mo is only 25 as JTTM says.

given McBride’s lack of control, would the Braves benefit by signing J.C. Romero? The Red Sox just released him, but I don’t know if he’d be an improvement
I think ESPN should have an “Alfonso Soriano Dance after Home Run” Tracker.
And they should also have a tracker on how many fights the Cubs get into because of that moron.

Frank, I like the idea of grabbing J.C. Romero as a flier and sticking him in Richmond to see if he has anything left. Boston thinks not, but we’ve had good results with our, ahem, contrasting atmosphere before.
Romero was a G reliever not to long ago. He’s only 31 years old.

Alex,
Your skin is way too thin. It’s not like you said he was 30, and he’s 29. You said he’s in his 30s—calling the broadcaster out in the process—and he’s 25. That’s worth correcting.
The thing is, you don’t have to take it personally. You’re hardly the only person on here I’ve disagreed with. If either of us is overanalyzing anything, it’s you, my man.
What do I have to do? Do you want me to preface each and every message I write to you with the “I love you and you’re a respectful, longtime Braves Journal poster” you gave ububba earlier before calling him “dead wrong”? I don’t see why that’s necessary—everyone here should know we can have differences of opinion without taking those differences personally.
Just relax, man. I’m not out to get you—but I don’t feel like saying this every time I disagree with something you say on here, so you’re going to have to believe me when I say it now and carry it forward with you.

With McBride’s performance tonight, maybe the Braves should give Will Startup a chance to be the LOOGY. However, they would have to add him to the 40-man roster.

Anyone else sense the irony in the O’s naming the coach of their awful pen to replace Perlozzo? Danys Baez should probably be blamed more on the front office than on the bullpen coach, but still …
Ironically, the O’s just drafted Sam’s son Eric Perlazzo, who I had a chance to see play for Shippensburg in the Regional championships here at Kutztown. He played well, but hes not major league material by any means.

“Damn, missed the chance to discuss the Bama-Tennessee saga. Fulmer still hasn’t beaten a full strength Bama squad, but I guess that was his point all along.”
How can you blame him for Bama’s shortcomings there (besides the obvious…)? I don’t recall Tennessee bidding on Albert Means – perhaps it was one of those “they would have/were definitely going to” deals – but I do recall Kentucky, one or two others, and of course Alabama. Surely if Alabama had had a case against Tennessee in any recruiting matters, they would have responded in kind.
It would appear that Alabama (and Kentucky) were fully cognizant of the risk involved in attempting to purchase Means, and it would appear that they decided that Means was worth it. Furthermore, if the deciders are trying the same tack of vilifying Fulmer and exonerating themselves that the fanbase, by-and-large, has tried, then probation will likely happen again down the road. Hopefully, for the sake of both schools, someone decided not to pass the buck.
And that’s from someone who thinks Fulmer’s little Easter egg hunt likely was to the detriment of the on-field product he offered, as well as someone who would like to see another get a shot at guiding the Volunteers.
I don’t really mind the Yankees anymore. Of the teams that sell out Braves home games for them, they’re easily my least non-favorite.
Is it the Braves or the other teams? ESPN is playing three Braves’ games this week. Tonight’s game is on ESPN, so is Wednesday’s game and Sunday’s game against the Tigers.
That means Joe Morgan, which means the TV will be on mute for me.
(from the last thread in response to Skip Caray soundlike he’s had a stroke):
“It’s still better then sounding like Chip Caray.”
its sad that Diaz and his .345 avg will be rotting on the bench the next 3 days so Druw and his .208 avg can play
csg-
According to ububba, Andruw’s going to get going any day now 😉
(sorry, ububba, I can’t help but be a little sacastic…Andruw is currently the WORST everyday playe on the team by a landslide).
Cox would never do it…but AJ should really be hitting 8th until he can get himself figured out. Torre did it with A-rod last year, so it isn’t unprecedented.
Andruw is not the worst everyday player on the team. Not even close. Thorman is worse. And McCann, factoring in his horrific defense, is worse.
When Torre did that last year he almost got fired. If Bobby puts AJ 8th int he lineup, Terry Pendleton could lose his job…
EqAs:
Andruw .257
McCann .259
Thorman .239
Andruw’s great defense is what’s keeping him in the lineup.
Well Pedro…something needs to be shaken up. AJ is a rally killer right now, and it is up to him, Cox and pendleton to figure how his problem and correct it. If something is hurting the team it has to be dealt with.
Jeremy,
Have you watched AJ the past couple weeks, he is looking awful at the plate. In fact he gets worse and worse. Thorman and McCann are making contact and swings are coming around. AJ is just looking awful…
Alex,
I have no idea if Andruw will begin to fire.
He may not be struggling as much as Andruw, but don’t forget about Francouer. His OPS is .606 for June with 17 K’s.
Maybe Bobby should let both of them have a day off?
My new blog, inspired by Alex R.:
http://www.firechipcaray.blogspot.com
If Andruw & Frenchy aren’t going to contribute, we aren’t going to win. Dropping them in the lineup is a temporary move. We don’t have adequate replacements for them.
I’m sorry, but I find the conversation pointless.
This Braves fan won’t wait. I’ll be glad to lead the bandwagon.
I’m sorry, but I find the conversation pointless.
Dan-
I love the website…that’s awesome. Congrats!
Leo Mazzone…would love to have the man back in a Braves uniform. Look, Phil returned to the Lakers, so Leo should return to the Braves. Some things are meant to be.
By the way, some of the guys in here may find this amusing, aggravating, or more evidence that ESPN is the most evil thing in the universe:
Phil Fulmer, model citizen.
I hope someone harpoons fat Fulmer one day…he’s the most 2 faced S.O.B. in Colelge football.
Alex,
How ’bout them Dawgs?
Does anyone remember a comment from years ago. Bobby was saying how it takes players time to mature. He then said some never do or take longer and nodded at Andrew.
I just watched that mess in the Twin cities and Andrew was awfull at the plate which takes some thinking and great in the field which is largly talent and instinct. I am afraid we have fifteen million dollars worth of talent and a two-bit brain. Something has to be done to motivate this man. The bench or down in the order or both. If it embarasses him so what no more than he is doing to himself at this point.
Amen, ububba. 😉 Go Dawgs.
And look, though we may vehemently disagree on ‘Druw, I wanted to preface my comments that I argue with all the love & respect in the world, my brother.
My All-time steroid team:
C-Ivan Rodriguez
1b-Mark McGwire
2b-Brett Boone
3b-Ken Caminiti

This is not “just a football coach”. This is an embodiment of pure evil.
Ah, yes, spoken like someone who’s team has had its collective rear handed to it for going on two decades now.
Icebox,
What makes you think hitting involves thinking and fielding is just instinct?
Stu,
Obviously, I am with Mac on this one. I go with ’embodiment of evil’.
He may very well be generous with his own players but what he did to Alabama was shameful and dispicable and I don’t blame the folks there for the way they feel about Fulmer.
Brian J., I don’t know why your comments have fallen into the spam filter.
Orange.
They wear orange.
well, i’ll worry about alex r harpooning the great pumpkin just as soon as one can roll down to the local pawn shop and find one with any regularity…what kinda vandy fan are you stu?
phil is no different than any other SEC coach with the exception that he resides in knoxville. a fact that only enhances the evil lurking within us all.
1) Nice video, Mac. Hope the Braves win tonight so we get another one from the Boss.
2) I really wonder what’s wrong with McCann right now. Is he still injured or what?
Marc, I’ve questioned Francoeur’s intelligence on a number of occasions. As in, “He really isn’t Clemson material,” and mentioning that if I’d done the Hardball Times five questions this year that I’d ask “So, is Jeff Francoeur stupid, or what?“
beedee-
I don’t know which SEC school (if any) your allegiance is to, but you can’t read this story and tell me that Mark Richt is cut from the same cloth as a 2-faced snake like Fulmer:
http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/uga/stories/2007/06/17/0618richts.html
They don’t get more devout and clean cut then Mark Richt. Seriously, he’s Dale Murphy level clean cut.
beedee,
Also, I agree with you…I thought Stu was a Vandy fan as well. Stu, you have to turn in your ‘Vandy card’ now 😉
Him siding with Fulmer is akin to me siding ever with some Georgia Tech fan (about football) since I assume the only thing I (thankfully) have in common with the pocket protector crowd at Tech are the Braves.
I guess McCann is due for a day off, but Im sure he’ll be in there the next 3 days behind the plate and Salty will play again when we face Rogers on Friday. I dont think we’ll see Salty at 1st too much in the future unless Pena gets the call. Why he’s still in AAA and we have Orr is beyond me! We need to play at least .500 ball over these next 6 games.
@45
stu, please read that as joke not an attack on you or vandy. as much as i dislike fulmer, i would like to see his stay at UT never end. no one can do less with more talent than phil…well maybe shula.
Fulmer may have been a homo for telling on alabama but they did it to themselves by cheating.
CSG, don’t be suprised if McCann is off tonight, if he plays he will most def. be off tomorrow..
I found this funny:
I watched him field under the dome it was amazing the balls he got under. Both my son and I commented on how he seemed to know exactly where to go — instinct and talent.
It is my understanding he listens to nobody about hitting and TP is very frustrated with him. Your correct hitting is talent and skill but you can learn to be a better hitter and at this time he doesn’t appear interested. The motivation is clearly not get a hit or go to your room. It is work with these people they can help.
Unknown, do not use that word. Also, the entire point is that Alabama and Tennessee boosters were doing the same thing but the NCAA decided to let Fulmer off because he tattled.
alex r,
i grew up in tennessee, and quickly grew to hate the vols. but seeing as religion is tabu here and out of respect for our gracious host Mac, i won’t talk auburn football on this thread.
Go Braves!
Uknown,
I am sure they NEVER EVER cheat at Tennessee.
Fulmer may have been a homo for telling on alabama but they did it to themselves by cheating.
Bingo.
Alex. R,
I went to school at Auburn…
Sorry, Mac. Didn’t mean to break your rule a second time.
And the happiest i’ve ever been was at Knoxville in 2004 at halftime when Auburn was up by almost 30. Considering the way Tenn. people were treating us before the game it was great!
it’s time to focus our aggression on the red sox nation.
it’s time for some “schilling is so sold” or “many’s hair is so bad” jokes
Unknown,
I get that as an Auburn fan you hate Bama…fine. That being said, you and everyone else in here, Mac, myself, Stu, everyone–should be far more offended by the injustice that only the SEC receives massive amounts of penalties while the Big Ten could practically sodomize Mother Theresa…and get away with it.
sold? old? whatever
Scumbag.
i was just about to bring up the whole USC thing
Unknown,
As a Georgia fan, watching Sean Jones 98 yard return for a TD a few years ago when we romped in Knoxville, also brought me great joy.
No offense, but if we cant talk about Golf here during the US Open, then Football, which is 80-85 days away, should be taken to another thread.
Next 4 days….Starters vs ATL
Schilling 31G 3.42ERA 222IP 225K
Beckett 14G 2.62 ERA 82IP 85K
Tavarez 3G 5.28 44IP 17K
Rogers 1G 0.00 4IP 3K
I really think if we can get one of these first two than we can win against Tavarez and Rogers, who will be making his 1st appearance back. 3 out of these 1st 4 would be awesome
I was brought a lot of joy by Georgia’s Homecoming game last fall.
as much as i love to see auburn win, watching the vols lose is even better!
I do hate Auburn, sure as a Dawg fan, but I really hate Tennessee, Tech and Florida far more. It’s really different for every fan at every school, as to which of your rivals you hate the most.
I was pulling for Auburn to have a shot at the national title a few years ago, when they were unbeaten and got screwed from being in the National title game.
But Florida this past year? I practivally worse Ohio State colors hoping the Gaytors would lose.
And I’ll be brought a lot of joy by Saban’s SEC opener this fall.
I love how an SEC conversation can break out at any minute—I don’t get that here.
My big thrill usually comes when the SEC racks up bowl wins over the Big 10.
Stu,
Yes, even Vandy has to beat us once every 14 yrs. I can live with it and Vandy played a great game. When Vandy does something big in Football, it’s rare enough that it doesn’t really offend me.
Football talk can go elsewhere right now, we have Boston tonight folks
Mac,
Agian, I totally agree that Fulmer getting off the hook was a joke and shouldn’t of happened.
Alabama can say that Tenn. should have gotten the same punishment that they recieved. But they can’t say that the reason they are on probation is because of Fulmer, like so many of my Alabama friends say.
I’m still sitting here shocked about the Bush/USC situation, but I have a feeling that it’s not over…
ububba,
Except that Fulmer ruined it by losing to a lesser Penn State team. How does THAT happen? Oh wait…it’s Fulmer.
It’s going to be tough to take two of three agianst the Red Sox, but if the braves want to contend this year they HAVE to start winning series agian…
Julian Tavarez sucks sucks sucks. Plus, he’s a jerk. I really hope we pulverize him. Kenny Rogers is a bigger jerk, and it would make me even happier to beat him. Curt Schilling is a blowhard, and every time we beat him makes John Smoltz look better by comparison, so I’d be happy if we could beat him too.
Beckett’s a good pitcher… until the next blister.
csg-
Yes, to be fair to Stu (see, Stu, I really try and get along with you, whether you believe it or not 😉 we should end the football talk since I made him stop the Golf talk. I can’t throw stones in my glass house.
If we win ONE against the Bosox, I will be thrilled.
anyone think Davies vs Det could get ugly?
AAR, so do you like the pitchers we are having to face over the next few days. This will make our wins even more enjoyable
Davies vs. Richmond would be ugly.
Apparently Booby loves Davies. He can’t figure out why Davies struggles so much. Frankly, I can’t either, but I am betting on youthfulness. He does have good stuff, but runs into a lot of bad innings.
csg,
i really hope i don’t see kyle on the mound for ATL until next season. he is a wreck and needs some serious work, i’d rather have some journeyman who can last 6+ and let him loose at the end of the season, than kill what remains of kyle’s confidence.
It’s not easy to break out of those slumps as a lefty…This week’s number of righties should help out…
Davies struggles because he leaves too many pitches high in the zone, common sense.
#87 – thats probably about right
89,90 – agree.
We have faced some of the best pitchers in baseball. However, we seem to do better against them most of the time. People like Silva are the ones that scare me the most.
Yeah and Davies also has no command, he’s not only high in the zone, he’s just all over the place
yes bobby likes davies and it’s easy to see why. he has the tools but he just can put it all together. i think it’s foolish to keep sending him out there to collapse after he’s made it through the order once. it seems like batters are adjusting to him after their first at bat and he’s unable to adjust or he just completely looses the ability to throw strikes.
I hope we rout Schilling tonight…can’t stand that sob or anyone else that that team, I’ve gotten where I hate the Red Sox like I hate Auburn & Tennessee.
Alex,
Few remember “the other 2” SEC/Big 10 bowl matchups this past year. Everyone remembers the last one.
And here’s one for your back pocket brotha Dog: UGA has never lost to a Big 10 team in a bowl game. They’re 6-0. You can look it up.
And while we’re at it, I’m fine with doing the Yankees’ bidding tonight. It’s amazing how the fortunes of the 2 NYC teams have changed. Met fans are standing on bridges & Yankee fans are their old cocky selves—strange, considering who’s in first & who’s in second.
bamachum,
I can see why you hate the redsox, as the braves struggle to beat them, similar to Bama agianst Auburn and Tennessee. 🙂
Andruw dropped to 6th: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/boxscore.jsp?gid=2007_06_18_bosmlb_atlmlb_1
Stu,
Speaking of Vandy, how’d those Commies do in the CWS?
ok let’s not get tacky. we are all braves fans.
1. The NCAA couldn’t have made the charges without Fulmer.
2. The NCAA, because it let Fulmer off, decided to overpunish Alabama for something that (it has become pretty clear) was noninstitutional — done by boosters, not anyone in the program.
Anyway, back to baseball.
is it just me or is mark lemke the steven wright of braves’ radio?
except lemke isn’t funny.
Unknown,
Atlanta’s record vs.
According to genius analyst Steve Phillips, the Braves are interested in Ken Griffey Jr.
I thought Saban was the most 2 faced coach in college football…..
if i had a dollar for each time i’ve heard that jr was going to the braves i’d have quite a few.
bobby just said they may send escobar down since he won’t play much. perhaps as soon as the detroit series is over!
Guys, all we need to do is acquire Griffey, Buehrle, and Morris without giving up Salty, and our problems will be solved.
What the Braves need is a real owner!
why send escobar down and hang on to orr?
New poll.
@ 111: especially since Orr has all of his minor league options left, I believe (that’s what old O’Brien wrote the other day, anyway).
No Big Papi tonight.
i’m starting to think orr is one of bobby’s love children
c’mon chuck, gotta throw strikes baby!
“One of?”
atleast 12
Attaboy Chucky.
Willie is gunna shock the world and hit .401
Free Willie!
Well sh*t
Horrible baserunning is an epidemic on this team.
I blame Snitker for all the baseruuners mistakes
Something I could have gone my entire life without hearing: Dusty Baker talking about a “sensitive tool”.
It’s so painful to watch James pitch, give up walks to .200 hitters, ugh! Can’t do that agianst this lineup!
He’s a terrible hitter….ugh
pot belly Jones…first pitch swinging…classic.
Andruw has been in this league way too long to be this stupid at the plate. There is no excuse for him to be trying to hit the ball to Alabama every time he swings.
Meanwhile, a beauty there by Dustin.
I met him when he was playing at AA for them. Real nice guy.
ububba,
To answer your earlier remark, yes, we did win the other 2 Big ten games (and I was at the Dawgs win over Va.
Man, these guys can’t keep up with James’ fireball of a 90 mph fastball.
Jones would be swinging away instead of making the pitcher work.
amen, klb.
I’m sure it was talked about earlier (missed it) but with Perlozzo out, what are the chances everyone in here thinks that Mazzone is back in Atlanta in 2008?
I say about 65%.
What a fantastic at bat.
Not often we get to see that.
Now that the weekend is over…GO INDIANS GO!
I say about 65%.
Since the organization seemed happy to see him go, I’d say about 0%
Remember, part of the deal was that Mazzone didn’t seem to be getting along with the Braves’ young pitchers. Something at the time made me think he and Hudson had issues too.
Yeah, KJ. Hey ANDRUW, were you watching how a Major League hitter does a Sac fly?
I think all might be forgiven on both sides if Cox pushes for it. Besides, it’s not like Roger McDowell has set the world on fire.
Situational hitting. How about that.
So…if we traded Andruw tomorrow for some young guys, would Willie Harris suffice in center?
I would be surprised.
Coco Crisp must be auditioning for the Braves’ CF job next year.
Damn, missed the chance to discuss the Bama-Tennessee saga. Fulmer still hasn’t beaten a full strength Bama squad, but I guess that was his point all along.
…searching for baseball segue… searching… searching…
Meanwhile, the Braves are just now getting back to full strength with Chipper back, so I expect us to go on a good run soon.
Back to you, Eli. *oh*
gameday has Chuck at 80 pitches through 4! is that correct?
At least we don’t have to worry about an Andruw triple play here
Rick Sutcliffe is much, much worse than Joe Morgan. He may not make as many anti-Braves comments, but he’s so stupid. SO stupid.
Whats wrong with McCann?? Nothing, he will be there in the end!
By the way, if we had Salty at 1B, this would be my favorite lineup tonight.
…
Sheff is in D.C. tonight and has already driven in a couple for the Tigers. I do miss him in a Braves uni. He’s a little out there at times, but he can hit like a mofo. Love watching that lightning quick bat.
…
Renty, Jones, McCann–told ya. Runs!
*hears laughter from across the nation at Andruw’s ability to hit*
Though he’s not at Joe Morgan levels, I am enjoying Dusty Baker calling our first baseman “thurman.”
and the rally killers strike again
The Mets should offer Andruw 6yrs/$120MM…to keep him in Atlanta.
Big time, Chuckie.
Chuckie = far more clutch then pot bellied Jones.
and its said that Chuck James has to pick up the slack for Andruw and Francoeur
Bases loaded. 2 outs. 2-1 game in the bottom of the 4th. Chuck James up–has thrown 77 pitches.
Is it crazy to consider pinch hitting here?
(James flips a single, so it works out)
if we could just squeeze 2 more innings, Cary…
If he’s still pitching 2 innings from now, the game will be tied…maybe worse.
I was at that Cal Ripken-related game.
I can’t believe Ripken broke the record 12 years ago. Doesn’t seem like that long ago.
I wasn’t there, Mike, but I’ve got a program from the game. (My Aunt and Uncle were there.)
UPDATE: Steve Phillips is still a moron. It’s neck and neck with Sutcliffe and Phillips.
A record no one ever talks about…Joe Sewell, in 1925, only struck out 4 times in 608 at-bats. Mighty impressive…he had 98 RBI’s with only 1 HR that year, too. Roll Tide
The Tide are gonna get rolled in Saban’s SEC opener…
(This is the second time I’ve said this—nobody’s taking the bait, dang it.)
I got about 10 programs. Haha. We were actually at the last game of the streak and the first game he didn’t play in. That was some weekend.
Prince Fielder has passes Albert Pujols in 1B voting for NL All Star.
In other news, Fielder has hit his NL-leading 26th HR tonight. Anyone see his inside-the-parker (how could you miss it, right?)?
What does this have to do with the Braves?
…segue magic.. segue magic…
The last player to hit an inside-the-park HR in a season when he led his League in Homers was.. Dale Murphy.
GO HOME SCHILLING!!
Woo woo!
The Cans are dancing tonight!
Wonder what Schill will post on his Blog tonight.
Hopefully that will SHUT some of you guys up regarding McCann…
Stu,
I just looked at Bama’s 2007 schedule and they open against Western Carolina.
I assume you were trying to make a joke about their 2nd game, against Vandy.
My wallet would be on Bama winning both those opening games but losing their 4th game…;-)
start Willie in center and Diaz in left.
let Andruw sit a few days.
Yeah, Alex, I meant Vandy…which is why I twice said “SEC opener.”
I’d gladly take your money. I’m already taking Chuck G’s afterward.
Go Miami Hurricanes!
Amen Mike!
Unknown,
I doubt it, dude. It’s not like people were saying, “Brian McCann SUCKS and will never hit Major League pitching again!”
The point has been that he’s been struggling–that’s inarguable. It’s a fact. He HAS been struggling. As AAR said a few days ago, we all love him and will be elated when he breaks out of it (hopefully, that’s what’s happening now), but you’re pulling a landogarner here by attacking an argument that no one’s making.
Ok, fair enough Stu. But I had forgotten you said SEC and laughed when I saw the words, “Western Carolina”.
The obligatory Division II whipping girls of any SEC school.
Alex, that would be the SEC opener, as Stu said, not the season opener.
Until I see our offensive line, I am not betting Shigetoshi Hasegawa.
…baseball…baseball..searching..
Hasegawa used to pitch for the Mariners who did the Braves a huge favor in taking garbage lefty Horacio Ramirez and gifting us fireballing Rafael Soriano.
Let’s rekindle the magic and pick up Adam Jones. I am going to beat this horse until J.S. hears me.
**resisting urge to do “make it rain” joke with a Seattle/Tacoma player named Adam “Not Pacman” Jones**
Alex,
For the first time, the Big 10 won 2 of 3 bowl games from the SEC this year. Tenn lost to Penn State, Ark lost to Wis, but Florida managed to squeak by Ohio State.
Stu,
On the McCann response to Unknown, totally agree.
Unlike Andruw, McCann will snap out sooner then later.
What really is interesting about this team is how offensively talented they really are when each player is playing their game. They can be one of the best in the majors if they all put it together. We definitely have a good shot in the NL despite our top 2 power bats playing like dumbasses.
ububba-
Yeah…I forgot. It’s so rare considering how much faster our athletes are then those turtles in the midwest.
i hate to be a bandwagoner but andruw looks like he couldnt hit it off a tee. what a killer.
By the way, Cary, Coco Crisp is showcasing himself really nicely as Andruw’s less expensive, and more effective replacement next season, after Boras gets Epstein to overpay for Jones.
I know it’s Bill Bavasi, but I have to think even he’s not that dumb, Cary.
Also, the reason I’m so excited about Vandy this year is exactly the reason you seem to be worried about Bama—the O-Line. It’s going to be so good…
And let me add that the far less expensive Coco Crisp is completely outhitting pot bellied Jones.
I want to say something nice about Cox…way to go not waiting too long (as the norm) in getting relief help out there as soon as James started to falter. Bobby’s acting like he wants to win tonight–cool.
woody, perfect as always
Newsflash: Woodward sucks.
Chris Ward is useless. Go back to New York.
I love college football with all my heart, but WHY is there more discussion on it here than on the Braves asskicking of the BoSox?
Priorities, men.
Cary…right on. The Big Ten couldn’t have possibly been any less impressive in any of their wins. They sucked even in victory.
Hey believe me, we are all enjoying beating these arrogant jerks.
Not that I feel sorry at all for Buckeye fans, but how much must it suck to have had arguably the second most successful season in football and basketball and all anyone remembers and brings up over and over again is how much you got your ass kicked in the National Championship.
Not only that, but it was to the same team. Can you spell O-W-N-E-D?
Hilarious. (and I can’t stand the Gators, but I think that’s great)
Related:
I think the title of that video should be “Another Beautiful Day in Columbus” and should be used by any SEC team in a recruiting battle with the Luckeyes.
why do twins not show up against the mets?
why is willie harris so good? can a .370 ba
this far into the season be a fluke? dont answer that.
The good news: the Indians are kicking the crap out of the Phillies.
Edgar!
Willie isn’t THIS good, but he’s a decent player. I mean, he’s at that age where he should really come into his own and play to his potential. Hopefully he keeps it up long enough to hold up the fort until Andruw and Co. get it together.
renty for president! thank you boston, we would’ve never been able to pay him with out your generous donations.
Mike Clay…when would that be for Andruw, next season?
I’m really glad that Bobby’s moved Willie up to the 2nd slot and moved Edgar to 3, followed by Chipper. I think, for the time being, this is the best line-up we have. Hopefully, McCann, Frenchy, Thor, and Druw will get hot and make changes necessary.
Jeff M…it would make the lineup even better if we could stick Andruw’s pot belly on the bench and allow the hot Matt Diaz to actually play. I’m just saying.
Eventually Andruw will go on one of his tears. Its an annual thing.
Stu, thanks for the Vandy tip. Good OL. check
Mike Clay, you are right. I guess I just feel this game is in the bag. I like our vibe tonight.. confident.
And I missed out on the pregame discussion earlier, so I’m playing catch-up. I’m from Tuscaloosa, AL so I get the shakes if I don’t discuss football often.
Fair enough though.
… baseball segue.. baseball segue..
Mariners GM Bill Bavasi also gets the shakes when he thinks about his employment future with Seattle. Unless the team wins now, he’s out. How else to explain Ramirez for Soriano. We have identified a weakness and we can’t have a conscience about it..
.. much like an offensive coordinator on the gridiron (tieback!).
Damn, J.D. Drew with the ole A-Rod special. 7-3 Braves still lead comfortably.
Would Tomo Ohka be worth a minimum salary pick up?
kali, is looking a little shakey
I fucking hate K Zone.
but recovers nicely. man he’s throw’n smoke!
beedee… are you sure? =P
I don’t know, Alex. I’m wondering if batting in the 8-hole would have the same effect on Andruw that pulling him from Center did way back when. I’m not sure that I wouldn’t mind seeing his reaction to batting in Thorland.
i call ’em like i see ’em…when i see ’em.
😉
Straight baseball…
My Willie Harris theory:
Or perhaps, someone told Willie that he should quit popping the ball up trying to hit 6 homeruns a year and instead just slap at the ball. I’m fairly sure that doesn’t explain all the difference. But it might explain some too. That along with Cary’s pop psychology might make some sense.
How bout Andruw Jones to the Mariners for Adam Jones
Hey, why not let Orr pinch hit for Druw. Would there be a difference?
Orr would probably put the ball in play.
Where was that camera zooming?
That’s what Cary’s been proposing, Mike.
Yeah, Mac, but now you are quibbling on the aesthetics of an out. An out’s and out, damn it.
Atta boy, Mike. You and I are going to see this thing through.
This is fun.
you have been thormanated!
ZOMG!!!
So all you guys with crushes on Salty, where do you play him now??? Thorman has been killing it since Salty started playing 1B in Minnesota…
@228
i like him behind the plate…war eagle!
and trade McCann???
Unknown,
Perhaps the reason Thorman’s hitting has improved is because he hasn’t faced any lefties since Salty started playing first against the twins…and we all know how bobby loves his platoons and lefty/righty match ups
Rick,
Hmm, makes sense
Salty is going to share time with both Thorman and McCann
Dusty Baker: If the Mets had won more games while the Braves were struggling, they’d have left them in the dust.
Yeah, Dusty, and if my grandmother had wheels she’d be a bicycle… or perhaps a Chopper. She can be pretty fearsome.
stolen partially and directly from Tony Kornheiser
Harris doesn’t seem to have great outfield instincts.
@230
it’s too easy…you have to be his girlfriend.
LMFAO Cary
I just see the HUGE hole in our SP and know it would take him to get a top of the rotation SP and just wondering if the braves are going to do it or not. I don’t think Escobar could get a top of rotation SP.
Partontosaurus sighting!
-Take Two-
Parontosaurus sighting!
c’mon baby wick!
Andruw for Crisp and Jon Lester
Coco Crisp, 4 hit night.
I would be happy to welcome him to Atlanta next year.
Huh?? Andruw is Coco Crisp this year basically… Why would the REd Sox do that, maybe because Andruw did so well in fenway right??
Cary…that was hilarious.
I would still take Baker over effing Joe Morgan who I would like to bitch slap him after that Sunday night game with the Cubs.
Why in the heck is Chipper still out there???
Because there is name value and teams will jump on that. It’s 2007. Everyone overpays.
because this is his team
Chipper is a man. He totally just spit on his hands to make em feel better.
Mac, if we could have some way to edit posts for typos after posting, I would be willing to double tip the jar. Seriously.
I could even be vigilant in correcting all the horrendous errors in THEN/THAN usage out there. You know who you are. And you are slowly killing me.
How’s that for a line on the resume? Braves Journal Editor-in-Chief… or is that your title, Mac?
No Mike, not when you are hitting .200 and haven’t looked like you could make solid contact in over a month. Name Value isn’t that high anymore…
Sure it is. Watch and see.
keep dreaming
I believe that most rational baseball fans expect Andruw Jones to bounce back and finish at his career norms this year, .260 avg, 30-35 HR, 100 RBI, maybe minus a slight discount due to the terrible start.
That is why he can not be benched and why he still has great value that, say, my main man Willie Harris would not have if he had similar stats at this point in the season.
And Cary, I’ve been the Sports Editor for my university’s newspaper the last 3 years, as well as a radio color commentator, so I might have to run against you…even tho I don’t often write complete words or sentences on here…hah
Dusty and Rick have no clue about the Braves. It just sounded like they thought Langy was still on the team. And Dusty said Diaz ‘wasn’t hitting the ball well yet.’ Blah.
Cary,
Why do u kare; so muuch a bout, other persons grammer arrors?
is it my imagination or did these ESPN morons just say the Braves still had Langerhans on the bench?
Just joining the game–great to see Thorman getting hot and Renty making the Red Sox fans (who were really nasty) look foolish….
He said the heart of the order has been “terrific” for Atlanta…he must have been forgetting the guy hitting 6th.
Cary,
For Andruw to finish in the .250 – .260 range he must hit over .300 – .310 the rest of the season. He’s not going to have that year this season. In fact, there has only been one year he hit over .300 (2000).
I think he’s going to get better, can’t get much worse. But to expect his average to get into the typical AJ range is unrealistic.
Unknown, that’s funnay!
Speaking of Langy, Alex, he’s been taking walks and playing serviceable for the Nats. I’m still glad he’s gone, but for those who wished him well, he seems to be fitting in here in D.C.
Hold the Nats jokes. At least until we’re leading the season series. Agreed?
Mike,
I’d bet you some $$$ that he won’t be hitting .250 at the end of the year. Do you realize the hole he is in? It’s mid- June, not early May, too late to make that up. I will give you homers and rbi’s.
Remember when Langerhans hit 20 homers for Richmond….wtf
Unknown, the grammar police joke was funny.
To the Andruw point, I agree to some extent that he might not make it all the way to his norms, but I think he can do .280 with power and approach his normal range. Granted, he looks worse than awful right now. But that’s baseball. It be’s like that sometimes.
Wow, poor Nats. 7 run rally… just not enough.
I’d take that bet because I’ve seen him play for almost a decade. He’ll go on a tear and hit .429 in July or something. Does it every year. The only thing that may ruin my theory is if he keeps trying to hit 90 homers to get himself a big contract.
He’ll make it back.
Ok McBride. Finish this shit up.
Throw strikes, Macay.
Cary…I agree about the Nats…they have the season series (currently) over the Braves…which makes me feel no love for them, despite being here in Northern Virginia.
It just makes me angry that the Braves couldn’t take care of business against them earlier.
I would probably rather have Langy over Woodward.
Mac,
McBride isn’t still your favorite pitcher, is he?
Mike,
I believe we all have seen him play for over a decade and I know what AJ your talking about. However, this isn’t the same guy right now. Not to say he won’t be good next year or even the year after that but this is not his year.
I agree with Cary that he can do .280 with good power and rbi’s the rest of the year. That will put his average in the .240’s.
Dusty Baker is awful. He says, “hopefully, someday, Wily Mo Pena will learn to lay off that off speed pitch”.
Umm…he’s not a 22 yr. old rookie, Dusty. He’s in his 30’s now.
And .240’s is not worth the $ we are paying him.
Willy Mo is only 25 if his birthdate is right.
Rick Sutcliffe just announced we lost the A.L. East title last year. Huh. This is after he announced that Langerhans was still on our bench.
Does Sutcliffe even realize we’re in Atlanta?
McBride’s control…
Alex, how many games a year do you go to?
wtf kind of pitch was that?
why does Cox have both Wickman and Soriano up? nothing like a litte extra wear and tear for the pen
Josh…those numbers are about 3 yrs off. I was wrong. He’s 28.
Alex, I still say Andruw will someday learn to distribute the ball to all fields, but I’m also sadly mistaken.
Yeah I figured they were way off. Damn Dominican birth certificates.
Unknown…I live in Virginia so I can only go to 9 games a year when the Braves come to RFK. I watch every single game on TV or MLB.com. You?
Yeah, the fightin’ Nats rally from down 1-9 to the Motor City Kitties, but come up short.
They are not a great team, but they are fun to watch, and I wish them no ill will and perhaps have a soft spot for them (until they become a division threat anyway).
Can’t wait for the new stadium to open in D.C. Going to Braves games with the Nats is like attending a reunion. You see all your Southern buds and ladies out in force.
Macay McWalk….
No more 9th-inning adventures, please.
But an ESPN announcer and former Major Leaguer saying the Braves still have Ryan Langerhans and play in the American League East is completely inexcusable.
let’s go butterbean.
No, no, no, Alex. Greg Oden is in his 30s. Wily Mo is only 25 as JTTM says.
Two or three a week but I don’t pay for them so I couldn’t even claim “we”. It’s just something that gets on my nerves when people refer to a sports team as “we”.
Wow, that Barry Bonds game tracker thing on espn.com is incredibly annoying. I would, however, be open to the idea of having one pop up every time Carlos Zambrano is batting.
Cary…will hopefully be at most of those games with you. But sorry…it pissed me off that the Braves blew all those games to the Nats. Wasted losses.
Hallelujah. They pulled out a win–good stuff!
given McBride’s lack of control, would the Braves benefit by signing J.C. Romero? The Red Sox just released him, but I don’t know if he’d be an improvement
One-pitch Wickmania.
Nice stretch there Thor.
I think ESPN should have an “Alfonso Soriano Dance after Home Run” Tracker.
And they should also have a tracker on how many fights the Cubs get into because of that moron.
Great game, lots of good things happened. I’ll be at the game tomorrow and wednesday so i’m sure you guys will miss my annoying comments. Later
One pitch one out–well done Wickmania!!
Unknown…you should at least give yourself a moniker.
Unknown a little bitter there over nonsense.
Fans are a part of the team, man. No reason we can’t consider them a part of us.
The Braves are lookin better and WE are gunna make a push in the NL this year baby
This good?
Mike,
Your right, it’s just something that gets on my nerves. No big deal.
Wily Mo’s only 25, right? He’s still young and he’s never been given much consistent PT. Dusty says some dumb stuff, but there was nothing wrong with that comment.
Great game! I didn’t like our chances going into the game but we really let loose today. I’m glad Andruw is in a part of the lineup where he can be less disappointing than usual. Sigh.
I agree…grab Romero. Cannot be worse then freaking McBride.
Stu…to be fair, I thought he was older. You really don’t have to over analyze every statement I say. I thought Pena was about 30. Sheesh.
Unknown, look forward to having you back after the live games…
even if you are a TigerWarEaglePlainsmanCow
Isn’t Rheal Cormier in Richmond as well? How’s he doing?
Cormier retired after not getting called up.
Yes, he is. 1.17 era in a whopping 7.2 innings pitched.
I think he retired
Oh. Thanks, RobBroad4th. And never mind.
No problem. We’ve had our fair share of aging relievers trying to stay afloat over the last few years. Hopefully we can grab a solid left hander soon.
Alex,
Your skin is way too thin.

Stu,
My response was 1 line in response so need for a big to do. End of story.
Anyone else sense the irony in the O’s naming the coach of their awful pen to replace Perlozzo? Danys Baez should probably be blamed more on the front office than on the bullpen coach, but still …
Stu/Alex,
It’s all love, y’all.
I don’t question you, bro. 🙂
Ironically, the O’s just drafted Sam’s son Eric Perlazzo, who I had a chance to see play for Shippensburg in the Regional championships here at Kutztown. He played well, but hes not major league material by any means.
Sounds like the O’s version of JS, Jr. 🙂
Thunder Road is my favorite song.
That’s all.
If we get to the playoffs, I want a vid for “The Promised Land” though.
