NY Giants 66-51 (–)
Boston Braves 66-52 (.5 GB)
Chicago Cubs 64-59 (5)
St. Louis Cardinals 64-61 (6)
Pittsburgh Pirates 56-63 (11)
Cincinnati Reds 56-65 (12)
Philadelphia Phillies 54-64 (12.5)
Brooklyn Robins 54-65 (13)
Today’s Game:
Boston 400 000 000 011 – 6 8 4 WP- James
Philly 001 030 000 010 – 5 13 5 LP- Alexander
Bill James pitched all 12 innings for his 19th win of the year; despite starting yesterday, the Phillies brough Alexander in for the 12th inning and stuck him with the loss. Giants held onto the lead by winning 4-3 in Brooklyn, and the Braves will host them to start their next homestand.
I’m watching the Reds-Giants: I don’t blame you if you don’t care, but stick with me.
This time of year is when the “grinding” happens; watching Aurellia and Hatteburg leg out doubles, turning redder than their uniforms. The whole Giants squad is getting treated for arthritis. Baseball, this weekend, is more dirt than diamonds.
The National League got old this summer, with the WC challengers staggerring toward the end. The Braves have much young talent; they don’t seem as old (or as desperate) as most other teams.
I hope they make the Mets pay for every inning. Go Braves!

The Giants got old long ago, and have gotten steadily older due to their total inability to develop young hitters and their managers’ preference for veterans. If Barry Bonds hadn’t been so good in 2000-04, and the rest of the West so bad in 2005-06, they’d have blown the team up years ago.
As for our young talent, it’s there and it’ll improve, but there are no waves of reinforcements coming in the next couple of years. Blanco might be able to contribute as a zero-power CF/ 5th OF, and Salty could bust out next year, but that’s about it. There is enough to make the playoffs in 2007, but the key is signing a bullpen with people who can pitch. (NB to JS: Filling a bullpen with guys who weren’t in the majors last year- Ray, Paronto, and Yates to name three- is not how it’s done.)

Remaindered Lineups:
Orr 2B
Renteria SS LaRoche 1B
AJones CF
McCann C
Francoeur RF
Diaz LF
Aybar 3B
James P
Reyes SS
LoDuca C
Delgado 1B
Wright 3B
Floyd LF
Green RF
Valentin 2B
Chavez CF
Trachsel P
Interesting that LaRoche has been elevated to 3rd in the lineup- not that it isn’t a good idea, but Cox has a tendency to keep backups in their lineup slots if they’ll only be out a game or two. This could be bad news.
Loving the bunts. I like this little meltdown inning. Let’s take advantage.
Didn’t make the game tonight. Had a late one in Manhattan last night. Saw The Cramps play at this party in the old Limelight. Vodka/RedBull + Heineken + Guinness = Ouchy head.
Going to see Smoltz tomorrow night for sure. Gotta represent.

Never thought I’d see Francouer strike out without swinging once. That’s gotta be a first.
At some point even NYMETS will realize that (a) He’s already blown at least two last chances, and (b) I can see his IP address so disguising himself as “BraveHeart” isn’t going to work either.
Just saw this Peyton Manning Direct TV commercial where he yells at the TV watcher to change the channel, then throws a touchdown to run up the score. This reminds me of something I’ve been meaning to say: even in his commercials, Peyton is a dick.

You suck, Pete.
Four-pitch walk to Frenchy.
Wow! Great play by Diaz!
Oh man, this is most awesome inning ever.
How does this team have such a huge lead? cripes.

I mean, presumably he will.
Hey, time to bunt again.
By rule, someone must win the NL Wild Card.
No, we can’t just take a team from the AL.
Hey NYMETS, Trax blows.
Wow. I was really enjoying that. Let’s see if Heath Bell has the same negative mojo.
He’s now admitted that he’s “BraveHeart”, for what it’s worth. He even used a fake “real name” for that.
Braveheart, douchebag, same thing.
You’d think with all the talk of proxy ips for mlb.tv that goes on here he’d have been clued in.
“Tech-savviness” and “AOL IP address” do not normally go together.
haha, that’s true.
The Braves still coasting along at .500, this season has been depressing.
FSU needs to wake up.
Nice play, Matty!

I think Orr should just bunt every time.
AOL? Don’t ever say that again…
Mac, if you can’t run up the score in pro football, where can you?
Has McBride always pitched from the windup? His stuff is filthy.
Wow. Not that was just a beautiful game to watch.
Er, *Now* that was a beautiful game.
Did we just have a game thread with 30-something comments? I guess everyone’s given up.
Everyone’s watching football, I think.
I’ll buy that.
Correct.
