Why are they named Pirates?? Pittsburgh isn’t near the ocean?
They are without doubt the worst Pirates I’ve ever heard of.
I’m calling a HS game later this year against the Pickens Pirates, which, to me, is a much tougher tongue-twister than Pittsburgh Pirates.
If they’re on offense, is it okay to say “our defense prepares to pick a Pickens Pirates pass?”
If there are no fans, is it okay to say “slim pickens today at the Pickens game?”
I don’t think Pickens is harder than Pittsburgh.

Lefty on the mound tonight for the Pirates is Cox’s thinking hitting Frenchy 5th. I don’t agree with it, but that’s the reason why he’s hitting before Mac and LaRoche (who should be on the bench this game).
On the radio. Bobby says that Marcus’ hand is still swollen. I expect he will be held out until a day after the swelling is down.

That was very close, the Pirates’ catcher did a very good job bring back the bounced throw to tag Prado.
My memory’s hazy, but as I remember, the story goes like this: the baseball club in Pittsburgh used to be called the Pittsburgh Alleghenies, named for the river that flows through the city (one of the 3 Rivers at the Point). After the dissolution of the Federal League, contracts were a bit murky, and the Alleghenies moved to grab one of the orphaned superstars, a deal of questionable legal validity. They became henceforth known as the Pirates, or informally the Bucs (short for Buccaneers).
I realize that some of that is probably factually incorrect. Anyone else who knows the story better want to fill in the gaps?

Jeff doesn’t pay attention to silly things like pitch counts and situations does he? Much less know who is fielding the ball and whether or not said player can gun your overly dumb aggressive butt down.
