Smitty’s barber gave me a sequel he’s writing to the Da Vinci Code, and it turns out that Wilson Betemit is actually the son of Mary Magdalene and Santa Claus–that’s why he’s given us presents all year long.
In Heaven, Bear Bryant learning to switch-hit just like his hero, Wilson Betemit. Mickey Mantle tried to show him, but Bear said, “No, he holds his hands higher up–like this. That’s how he was able to foul off so many pitches against Vargas.” And then the Mick felt sad, because he realized how many more home runs he could have hit in the 1950’s and 1960’s if he could have looked at game tape of Wilson Betemit’s swing.

Why is Brian Jordan on still the team? I’d rather the Braves added an extra crappy pitcher. He can’t hit. His defense at first stinks. And Diaz can do anything he can, better. It’s a waste of roster spot.

While I understand Davey’s comment above, I almost feel like I must watch the game today. I’m looking for signs of life!
There is nothing in my personal life that would make me talk negatively about the Braves here, so I can say with all sincerity that this team is playing below anybody’s expectations. Frankly. I think they could all use a swift kick in the ass.
If you doubt my evaluation, I ask you to think back on the posts found here in the last month. Like Alex said yesterday, so many comments start with “. . . I was at the movies (or dinner) and didn’t see the game . . .” And that’s from people I consider diehard Brave fans.
The Braves aren’t just mediocre, they’re not very entertaining, apparently. I don’t think it’s too soon for a big shake-up. I don’t think it’s reactionary to yearn for big changes.
But the last thing I can accept from the management is a complacent attitude. It HAS been a good run. It DOES have to end someday.
But I’ll be damned if I’ll accept that in JUNE!

Though the Braves may not be very entertaining, I do think that they are competitive. Yesterday’s second game proves the point. The Braves were all but down and out, yet they came back to within one run. All I ask of the Braves is that they remain competitive; that they give themselves every chance of winning; that, by the end of the game, they know that they played to the best of their ability.

by interleague play we will have mccann back. i will be looking forward to a giles, renty, chip, druw, mccann, laroche, frenchy, betemit, langerhans lineup. i am glad to see betemit starting today but not at the cost of chipper sitting. i guess chip does need a rest considering he played 18 yesterday.
That’s good 2 hear. Chipper couldn’t even hit Jose Lima the way he’s going these days..
The past couple of seasons..when we start of slow, and struggling around .500… there’s always been a big game that the Braves would win, and that would wake em up and start a good roll. Remember that game against Baltimore a few years ago..where they came back and won…and never looked back
The Braves need something like that..just something to get the ball rolling and keep it going. Go on one of those win 30 out of 45 streaks..
Boy do I miss McCann.. In my opinion he’s the best catcher in baseball, and I’m not just saying that because he’s a Brave. He’s the best..and this is only his second season of playing..
Getting him back will be a big boost.. and he’s joined Chipper,Andruw, Smoltz and Frenchy as my fav. players on the team

Doug Eddings at the home plate today, that’s exactly what the Braves need.
Sosa would be great as the guy that tosses those balls up there to the hitters during the home run derby

Not only are the Braves in serious danger of getting swept in a four-game set, but they’re about to get swept at home – to a team whose best pitcher didn’t even throw this series. I think what’s concerning here is that there was some reason to hope things were turning around – and they still can, it’s a long long season – as they often do around this time. But the starting pitching isn’t there; the hitting is inconsistent and wholly undisciplined (which explains, in part, the inconsistency); the defense is at best okay; and the bullpen remains mediocre at best, terrible at worst.
All of which explains the general negativity on this page. I think. It’s frustrating for fans to see the very things they feared would happen actually happen. It makes the JS look like a smug schmuck, instead of a smug winner.
I guess this is how it feels to be a Royals fan..but it hurts less with them because they unlike us don’t have any expectations

something needs to be shaken AND stirred in the clubhouse. reitsma-gone, james brought up asap, thomson to the pen, and everyone else a good teabaggin’ (or a slap in the face).

That arrogant smug look on the Diamondbacks’ faces makes me sick. They are now my most hated team aside from the Mets. Whoever wins the NL West, just don’t be the Diamondbacks.

The real sad thing is that Reitsma is getting paid a lot of money to make thousands and thousands of fans miserable every time he pitches. Can someone at least start up a website that bets on how many bombs he will give up or sell dartboards or pinatas of him so people can at least have some joy in his suckiness. Seriously, how can even his mother love him at this point? It also looks like Andruw is due to go 0 for his next 40 with 39 soft groundouts to third base. How many of these streaks is he worth per year? 3 or 4 at least. Chipper’s plate performance seems to be going the way of his hairline as well. Cox needs to try Sosa out as a hitter and not a pitcher. LaRoche looks like he should be playing in a local twilight league with that dumpy body of his. He needs to start taking that ritalin and hitting the weightroom. So frustrating.

Four things: Reitsma indeed sucks, and Cox sending him out there again and again is actually starting to border on cruel; calls for ‘teabaggin’ are scary; the Braves are not the Royals – if you can name more than five guys on the Royals without looking them up then I’ll be impressed; and Cox cannot be blamed when he has nobody in the pen he can trust, few guys consistently hitting, and no starter who can put up three quality starts in a row.

“Something has to be done JS. There is still time for a good trade for a bullpen arm.”
I’m sorry but any trade for a bullpen arm will be the biggest waste of money in history. Roger “I make good pitchers bad” McDowell will waste no time in turning whatever quality arm they bring in into a mediocre AA pitcher at best. If anything, JS needs to bring in another pitching coach. Seriously, at the beginning of the season everyone said how great McDowell was and how he brought a a much less of a “walking on glass” environment to the pitching staff. Well, these pitchers are clearly babies and Mazzone knew how to scare the crap out of them to make them pitch well (with the exception of Reitsma and Kolb who will never be good even if they had God’s arm). I want to start seeing some real talk in the media about how terrible the McDowell move was and how Mazzone was the key to the Braves’ winning.
Smitty’s barber gave me a sequel he’s writing to the Da Vinci Code, and it turns out that Wilson Betemit is actually the son of Mary Magdalene and Santa Claus–that’s why he’s given us presents all year long.

Doug Eddings at the home plate today, that’s exactly what the Braves need.
Perfect.
Yes, Eddings has already affected the game.
2 Pitches before Davanon’s home run, Sosa threw an obvious third strike down the middle of the plate that Eddings called a ball.
I remember hearing he was part of this crew coming in and it was a bad omen overall.
Ah well..it seems like it;s going to be a long day again..
I wrote a little something about the Braves …
Check it out here
This isn’t a good positive start….
I guess we asked too much from them
One song title keeps coming up to describe the current Braves season path:
“Highway to Hell”.
By the way, anyone else sick to freaking DEATH of the freaking Diamondbacks? I cannot wait until we are done playing them for the rest of the year.
Honestly, ever since the 2001 Playoffs, we have had loads of trouble with this organization.
Q: When is Tony Clark Carlos Delgado?
A: When Jorge Sosa’s pitching.
I see Sosa picked up right where Thomson left off.
“When Sosa misses his target..he misses by 3 to 4 feet..”
Damn skippy Pete..
Worst homestand ever?
Stu-
Yes. worst. homestand. ever.
Is it just me or does this feel like it’s 1987 all over again?
The D’Backs atleast didn’t exist in ’87..
John Schuerholz’s new Book:
“Why I am incapable of reading a scouting report and how I help let my bullpen turn to sh–.”
Sosa would be great as the guy that tosses those balls up there to the hitters during the home run derby

RENTY! 2-run shot!
Remlinger just had a scoreless inning…I feel strange
It’s not quite the opposite of shame, Davey- call it “less shame.”
FINALLY Jeff gets a hit!!!
OMG… REITSMA… gives up a 3-run homer!?!?!?
wow
Oh, ferchrissake. Reitsma’s not a major-league pitcher anymore, Bobby!
oh, look, Reitsma sucks. Still.
Is today, finally, it, the end of it, the end of Reitsma? when is enough ENOUGH?
This whole season sucks and it’s Cox and JS’ fault.
Shitsma – that’s quite a gopher pitch you have developed.
reitsma must be put to death
oh good lord… he gave up another home run
this is pitiful
Damion “Barry Bonds” Easley is getting on my nerves..
Tony “Albert Pujols” aswell…. I’ve had it…I’ve really had it now…
The worst part? The guy is so sad, so hang dog, so down on himself, I actually feel sorry for him. I wish he was just a prick like Kolbb.
I was saying just the same thing a few days ago, Alex…
But I’m done feeling sorry for him. He needs to be Designated For Assassination.
Where is that guy in the pick-up truck?
COME ON GIANTS!
Cox has nothing to do with this.
Bobby Dews is a better option out of the bullpen right now….and i’m being serious
Does anyone else feel that we’re going to be in fourth place after our three game series with Washington?
Something has to be done JS. There is still time for a good trade for a bullpen arm.
