Cincinnati Reds 47-52 (11.5)
Brooklyn Robins 41-52 (14.5)
Pittsburgh Pirates 41-54 (15.5)
The winning streak is over, as the Braves send out Ensign Cottrell to lose the only game he’d pitch as a Brave, and his second and last overall major league start. He was yanked after allowing the run in the second. Wilbur Cooper was a hard-luck case: even though the league’s ERA was 2.79, his was 2.13 and he still had only a 16-15 record. The Pirates in general had the league’s seconnd-best pitching and best defense, but its worst offense by far.
Went to a Myers-HoRam game last year in Philly. It was HoRam the Bad with 4+ innings, 6 Runs, a pair of homers, incl. one to David Bell, who only gets hits vs. Atlanta.

Players move around in the lineup every day, doesn’t affect their hitting at all. He was uncomfortable hitting leadoff because he wasn’t getting any hits, not the other way around. It’s actually harder batting second because you have to take some strikes if the speedy leadoff guy gets on. There’s no reason to believe the two spot is some magical match for his skill set.

Robert, I think you’re overstating the point a bit. Some players really don’t take well to moving around in the lineup, and given Giles’ three years of success mostly batting #2, I don’t see why we can’t keep him there, assuming we have another player who can bat leadoff and enjoy it (and in fact, we have two in Aybar and Renteria). It’s more a comfort level thing than a skill set problem.

Fans (i.e.-non-players) can go on until the cows come home about how there’s no difference in batting here or there, or there’s really no such thing as clutch hitting, and closer mentality doesn’t exist—but what we say or believe doesn’t really matter one iota. Yep, LaRoche nevermind the fact CR was the one causing the loses by blowing saves in those games(LA game last year 3 slams in one game etc.). We don’t want you hitting Grand Slams, because we lsoes when you do that.

Who would have thought that on a Braves site we would be talking about what player sucks more….this is very sad and the argument is stupid and pointless.
Franklin’s page on CBS sportsline (major and minor numbers)
It looks kind of odd. He seems to put up pretty good numbers at AAA and pretty poor numbers in the bigs. Every year for six years. He’s like the definition of a AAAA player.
Ever play the game? There’s this thing called a comfort level. There’s this other thing called pressure. They are real. Some guys thrive, some shrivel. If a player refers to it & discusses it, I tend to follow his take on it, as opposed to a blogger or fan.
And BTW, your Soriano example doesn’t wash. He’s playing LF because he has few other options. He’s still a lousy LF.
And you’re perfectly welcome not to believe what players say. But as long as they’re the guys taking the field, I’ll pay more attention to them.
“If they [the Braves] had two or three Smoltzes, I think their starting rotation would be pretty good,” Charlie Manuel said.

If Francoeur got on, LaRoche would have hit a tying home run off of Tom Gordan and then Bobby Cox would have used Tyler Yates in the tenth instead of Baez or Wickman and the Braves would lose regardless.

Aybar on the other hand, not so much.
Another runner stranded at second….
I don’t know about that call.
Anyone know what our team average is with runners on and with runners in scoring position since the allstar break?
Anyone else not getting a picture on MLBTV?
Oh God, Bobby is right.
This could get rough…
Well shit
“4 Seam,
You miss my point, too, which has nothing to do with metaphysics or urine.”
I’m talking about superstitions.
I know what “your” point is.
I know “what” GIles is thinking.
Mental bocks, mental suppositions, “if a player belives it, it exists”
Alfonso Soriano belived going to the outfield was going to suck, he was wrong.
Every get the feeling you say something and no one understand what you say…..?
Superstions and nuttiness aren’t my cup of tea.
Howard….ughhhh
Yeh, what up with that? I don’t have a picture either. Now I have to turn up the sound and have to actually listen to Ron Gant!
Anyone else think Victorino made NO effort to get out of the way?
Found this on si.com:
If the Mets win the World Series this fall, left fielder Cliff Floyd said he’d seriously considering retiring from the game.
— Newark Star-Ledger
Pretty pathetic they’re already talking about IF they win the WS.
“If you are a big man, its going to go a long way”-Ron Gant
I think it will be all Tigers this year. They’re hungry for it and Leyland has done an amazing job with that team.
I am going with the Braves all the way….
Oh, wait…nevermind I think it will Tigers aswell.
I think it will be all Tigers this year.
Zach Miner shutting down the Twins tonight for the Tigers. One of the guys we gave up for the Farnsworth experience. He would have been nice to have around this season.
Yeah we had the debate weeks ago….
Giles is wrong to think he hits better in the 2 spot.
Renteria think he is a better 2 hitter, BUT HIS STATS SAY 3RD IS HIS SPOT.
Absolutely retarded.
When I was Dixie Youth to Babe Ruth, I did not really care.
When I got moved up I felt more pressure, before I stepped up to the plate.
But when I got in the batters box I didn’t think “Oh wow I’m a better 2 hitter than…”
Five years ago, would anyone have thought that the Red Sox and Tigers would be WS contenders?
Texas Pete and HORAM!!!!!!!!!!
Loved this quote from Giles today: “I’m not making excuses for the first couple months of the season but I’m a lot more comfortable batting second”.
In other words, I’m not making excuses but here is some information so you can make an excuse for me. Ridiculous.
If you look closely, Horacio starts cracking up near the end of the commercial.
Warning track power
Oh, not another one of these warning track games!!
Amen, Robert, amen.
Andruw just flirted with the wall.
We have to win ballgames?
I am glad Gant and Rathburn have decided that the Braves have decided to start winning games. Time for Frenchy to swing at the first pitch for a DP
Two walks in the inning. Which is more likely, that Frenchy takes a couple of pitches or that he spontaneously combusts at the plate?
Combusts
C’mon Jeff. Two walks this inning. Make it be good.
It appears the braves believe they can only win a 2 or 4 game series.
No 3 spot for them, THEY CAN’T MENTALLY TAKE IT! LOL
Please wlak Jeff PLEASE!!!!
Taking pitches!
21/11.
Take that!
JEFF WALKED! JEFF WALKED!
HOLY COW!!!!!111111
OMG a WALK!!!!
Frenchy walks!
wow
Wowza. He must be real, real wild.
Whoosh! Frenchy actually walked. That always reminds me of the Far Side comic strip where the guy loses the quickdraw shootout to the sloth.
We have never won a game that Adam has hit a slam in
Well heres to a 3-run double.
Frenchy w/ a walk? Go figure?
I’m not watching live. Did they take Francouer’s ball four ball out of play?
Double and a walk, but I am sure you guys will find something to complain about.
…………..
Almost disastrous.
LaRoche beat it out?!?!
Breathe, Lando, breathe!
Go Adam again.
Huckleberry back to earth.
Good hustle.
You say that every time he doesn’t get a hit.
Bases loaded and we get one run. That’s why we suck so bad.
I’ll be your Huckleberry.
So we just need Myers to walk three guys next inning and we’ll be tied!
Another pile of crap “mental thing.
The Brave shave never won a game where LaRoche has hit a Grand Slam.
Yep, LaRoche nevermind the fact CR was the one causing the loses by blowing saves in those games(LA game last year 3 slams in one game etc.). We don’t want you hitting Grand Slams, because we lsoes when you do that.
Now stay in the 6th spot…..
Land….not the only reason we suck.
Yeah with RISP I do Dan. And if I am saying it enough that you notice what is it saying about Huckleberry? Yeahhhhhh…….
Yes, obviously Alex. But we have been loading the bases and not doing anything with it a lot lately.
Lando,
Too bad Jeffdid used his OPSBBQ on that slide to improove his lightsaberonics. We might have forced the Phillies to forefit
They got one run the Bases Loaded.
That is an improvement.
help us jebus!
Oh no, HoRam is hurt and “Suicide is Painless” is playing. We have no more starters
Is Rathbun under the impression that the hamstring is part of the wrist?
This is what losing seasons are made of.
Not having Chipper has sucked the life out of this lineup, combined with bad starting pitching. The bullpen has been the most reliable thing for a month now.
Yeah Smitty, Frenchy should have used the light side of the force to help Huck get that ball past Nunez’s glove.
Oh great. I hope we get one of those “players are in too good of shape” excuses after the game. How is it that Thomson and Ramirez, relatively young pitchers, have been on the DL way more than our 39 year old veteran?
Ryan, Jebus apparently thinks we needed to be cleansed of the taint off HoRam.
Quick, it’s the Vulturesignal!
according to gameday, mlb has changed their ruling on walks. it now takes 5 balls.
To end what appears to be a ridiculous discussion, can anyone get stats on all the starters’ averages with RISP?
Hello, Vulture. I hope you get that mojo back for winning games.
James, Shiell, and Cormier as our 3, 4, 5 pitchers? Mmm boy.
Is Landogarner talking about LaRoche?
How dare you speak evil of OUR OFFENSE sir.
I demand a duel at dawn!
Villareal is coming on, we win.
the playoff streak had to end some time and I guess it’s going to end with a wimper.
Only if I get to choose the weapons.
We had six starters at the start of the season. We’ve traded 0. Now we don’t have enough guys to fill a rotation.
6 not including James.
does anyone else think its eerie to watch rathbun gaze into gant’s eyes? gant is obviously uncomfortable.
Ryan, now he knows how we feel listening to him.
Which do you choose?
I will fight, as long it doens’t involve actual death, that woulds kinda be a little too much over LaRoche’s honor and such.
BUT A DUEL NONE THE LESS!
AARRRGGHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TAKE THE OUT TAKE THE OUT TAKE THE OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just got home.. nice to hear that the Vulture is already in the game
Excellent decision making Villareal.
3-1. Grybo.
Banjos, dueling banjos of doom!
ahhhhh…the vulture. the fat little toad is easily now our worst reliever.
Great…
LaRoche dives, comes up empty.
4-1
Don’t stop there Vulture…they need more runs
OH MY GOD! Someone please cut Gant’s tongue out!
Chris Wheeler is blaming Villarreal for walking the 8-hole hitter when it was Horacio that walked him. I can’t stand Chris Wheeler+Larry Andersen.
Langerhans looks like Diaz out there.
I guess we are done here. Time to find something else to do.
I’m listening on the radio…but I’m really wondering how Langerhans dropped that ball…
Langerhans dropped the ball, awesome.
Landogarner, I accept the challenge!
We will meet at dawn, on the original set of Hee-Haw.
Prepare for Not-So-MORTAL COMBAT!!!
FIGHT!!!
He put a pitching machine in his glove, Davey.
Any interesting quotes from Gant please post them…I need some humor to hide this debacle.
Is Langerhans drunk??
The Phillies are making Villareal look less of a vulture and more of a stoolpidgeon.
Giles dives.
Howard scores 7-1.
5 runs this inning.
APPLAUSE? FOR WHAT?????
Chip Caray : “this has not been a whole lotta fun for Oscar..”
Chip forgets the torture we go through by watching this mess on a daily basis
I think that applause you heard was the Mets fans all the way in New York clapping sarcastically.
Hahahaha….
Skip : “they gotta get somebody up don’t they??”
The tone of his voice was priceless…
I was thinking of the set of Deliverance. We could reenact the scene where they play that awesome song. You can be the retard on the porch. And then after we finish I can say “You sure do have a perrty mouth”
“When the fans see a game like this its very dissapointing”-Ron Gant
DUH!
Langerhans made a catch. Things ARE turning around.
Whuu huuu we got an out…
Thanks Ramirez.
YAY!!!!we are finally out of that damn inning…
“I was thinking of the set of Deliverance. We could reenact the scene where they play that awesome song. You can be the retard on the porch. And then after we finish I can say “You sure do have a perrty mouth” ”
You can be the Fat Woman who smells like bacon.
If this inning is 1-2-3, I might break my fist on something.
Stuttering Gant gotta gotta gotta
…OMG… this is like the nightmare that won’t end?!?!?!?
TERRIBLE… oh dang.. and I’m having to rely on gameday since the game is on TS… I hate not being able to see this with my own eyes!
this is just not good! …no words!
which I always hated coming into a game that I wasn’t prepared to pitch… not getting to warm up… being thrown in with a quick warm up! very frustrating and hard to do but dang it… this is the majors!
Myers is pitching like his beat up wife.
Dear Baby God,
Please use your special Baby Jesus Powers to help the Braves come back in this game.
Ok, but I still get to say the perrty mouth line.
That is beyond the end of this game:
1. Four pitch walk to a .158 hitter
2. McCann lets an easy pitch pop out of his glove
3. Idiot Villarreal and whoever yelled “third third third” at him throw to third
4. Langerhans drops the ball
5. Villarreal sucks
And this team is still thinking wild card?
Rob, how about Landogarner?
He thinks Francoeur hasn’t done a thing wrong, and his butt and OPS looks tasty.
Man crushes are nasty and delusional.
I have no idea what you’re asking me.
Thank the Lord, something!
GILEY!!!!
Sweet!
Marcus wasn’t kidding about the ‘roids i guess
YES! Baby Jesus helped us. Or as our brothers to the south call him el nino hey-zues
Marcus is back on the juice. Damn what a hit.
GILLY! …alright… we’re making a come back!
lmao…
Yeah, the whole hitting #2 is all in his head…OK!!
Can Aybar play left?
Thank the Baby Lord, Rob. The eight pound, six ounce Baby God.
Don’t be bitter 4seam, just cause you have to be the retard on the porch.
Giles comes through!!!!
It means nothing!!!!
Okay Landogarner, I’m retard, your fat woman, I’ll bring my laRoche scrap book, you’ll bring Francoeur’s game used jock you stole during the last home series.
Winner takes all.
You get to burn the scrapbook, I’ll sell the jock to some other freak on ebay for 1,000 dollars.
How about if Lando wins, 4 Seam has to dig Huckleberry’s Ritalin out of the garbage.
No way, I’m not giving up that jock. It means too much to me!
Yeah, Huck looks like he needs it.
Just our luck.
I’m not bitter, me bitter no.
I just want some sense knocked into you.
Francoeur ain’t better than LaRoche tight now.
Although that arguement means jack, because the Braves suck.
Laroche just happens to suck *less*.
Langerhans is wearing a Burrell mask. Strategy!
Generous single.
Burrell is a sack of doo-doo
LOL, why are you even talking about that 4seam? Nobody was talking about it. And I honestly don’t care what you have to say about it. You must be bitter.
Hit it to left!
Tying run coming up in the form of Adam LaRoche.
Frenchy found some spare clutch!
He did! But send him to AAA anyway, he sucks.
FRENCHY!!!!!! OH YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Who would have thought that on a Braves site we would be talking about what player sucks more….this is very sad and the argument is stupid and pointless.
“How about if Lando wins, 4 Seam has to dig Huckleberry’s Ritalin out of the garbage.”
I don’t need to do that, I already have.
The Phillies are giving it back up.
If Villareal didn’t suck.
The Braves will not come back.
No Way.
there’s that 2 out rbi again
Find something to bite down on, Lando.
Thank god for that wild pitch. A single wouldn’t have been enough for BMAC to get to home.
Crap.
………….
Yup, back to earth once again. Wow does Huck suck with runners on today.
They aren’t back.
Stop kidding yourself.
Is Tyler Yates coming in to make it 10-4?
Find something to bite down on Rob.
humbug…
He must have Alzheimer’s on top of ADD, because that was the same pitch three times.
Baby Jebus kinda spit up on LaRoche, didn’t he?
You just swung & missed the same pitch 3 times. Idiot.
Time for Franklin??
VILLARREAL!?
Nah, Bobby will leave Villa out there because he pitched so well last inning.
GameDay’s busted. It doesn’t show the Braves making a pitching change.
Yup, gotta stick with what’s working…
Villa’s still out there.
The Vulture is still flying?
I thought we really wanted to lose….
Bring in Yates and lets get this sucker over with.
Leadoff single. Shocking.
Gotta admire the Vulture’s consistency…
WAYNE FRANKLIN!!!!
Yea thats right WAYNE FRANKLIN.
Who????
Bring in the Benjamins.
“Coaching visit to mound.” Oscar’s only words should’ve been “What took you so long?”
I’m copyrighting “The Benjamins” for Franklin. I know it’s not great, but shut up.
According to Gant, Franklin is a left hander and other teams have left handers.
Much like the Vulture, Gant is spot on tonight.
Braves Starting Rotation next year.
If Smoltz reitres….and Hudson gets traded, and every else gets injured as usual
1. Lance Cormier
2. Chuck James
3. Tyler Smith
4. Jason Shiell
5. Jose Lima
LOL, Rob
I just got home and I turned on the TV to see the 7-4 score and I couldn’t help not being surprised. That’s really sad.
Lance as our ace? Don’t forget Laroche wants to pitch.
Huck is really in need of his ritalin tonight.
……………
Gant speed is important, mumbling near end.
All this losing makes me hungry… I’m gonna get a sandwich
We should try Frenchy out on the mound. He’d be a good hitter for a pitcher.
Way to not suck, Wayne.
The Benjamins!
Whoooo! A scoreless inning! Now, the chance that we can score some more runs is……*sigh*
LaRoche can be the 6th starter.
We can re-invent the starting rotation.
2 up 2 down….Franklin not bad..
Franklin’s page on CBS sportsline (major and minor numbers)
It looks kind of odd. He seems to put up pretty good numbers at AAA and pretty poor numbers in the bigs. Every year for six years. He’s like the definition of a AAAA player.
The orde rof the roataion does not matter.
Sorry, I meant to post a link to the sportsline page.
REDO
The order of the rotation does not matter.
Wow, Orr got out. What a surprise.
What is with Bobby’s Orr fetish?
That was Orrible. Get it? I’m hillarious.
why do we have so many worthless players?
Same as JS’ fetish with former Braves.
Jay, at least those guys were useful once. Orr has never been useful at any time.
Great, another K. Just great.
Now, this is how you win games!
True.
I feel like I could get out the bottom of the Braves’ batting order.
Franklin’s ERAs, in AAA:
2000 3.63
2001 3.81
2002 3.12
2004 3.86
2005 3.61
2006 2.36
Franklin’s ERAs, in MLB:
2000 5.48
2001 6.75
2002 2.63 (four starts)
2003 5.50
2004 6.39
2005 6.39
“why do we have so many worthless players?”
After 14 start playoff appearances and Division titles, the Braves were looking to go in a different direction.
Aybar with another one of his patented fly outs.
“Same as JS’ fetish with former Braves.”
Huh? But the Braves need the veteran presence of Brian Jordan and Mike Remlinger’s lefty arm.
But could our bullpen get the bottom of our order out? The really movable object meeting the very resistable force
Which college did Franklin attend?
So hes a Minor League warrior.
UMBC, 4 Seam
Maryland-Baltimore.
Same time JoeyT.
Hey! We struck someone out!
I want to be happy, but for some reason, I can’t.
4 Seam,
Just got in.
Re: Your definition of “superstition.”
Hopefully the Vulture was taking notes..
Congratulations, Mr. Franklin. Your 0.00 ERA leads the team.
You’ll probably be released soon for showing everyone else up.
Atta boy Gilly.
Ububba can’t read. I’ve mentioned myself playing the game.
Comfort level, BS.
Learn how to hit and keep your mechanics right.
Ububba, read what i wrote, I did read yours.
Ron Gant just said the Blue Jays were in the race, right?
Could use a long one here, Andruw. I don’t care if you fall over.
“UMBC, 4 Seam”
No I’m not, what I meant was he is a career minor leaguer who fights to get to the bigs.
warrior part meant that.
I find his swing very humerous…I mean come on who else does that?
“..and not only will Ron ride the mechanical bull, I will tell a funny joke. Maybe” – Bob Rathbun
Ron Gant is trying hard for the emmy.
“But could our bullpen get the bottom of our order out? The really movable object meeting the very resistable force.”
Oscar Villarreal vs. Thorman/LaRoche, Langerhans and Orr.
Gant can’t see or talk.
Huh, 4-seam?
I don’t know what internet acronym you thought I mean, but I was referring to his college. You asked where he went to school. UMBC is the answer.
Come on Francoeur. Launch one out and fair.
McCann doesn’t suck.
C’mon Hacky.
Frenchy, will he swing at the first pitch?
Frenchy as the tying run. Will he do something spectacular? He’s already walked, so he’s already pushed himself to the limit.
B-MAC!
A hit would get Giles in, cause I know it wouldn’t get McCann in.
Thank God.
Frenchy!!! Take a strike, swing at one in the LHB box.
UMBC is like LOL-You must be confused.
I though you meant that.
Frenchy is having some good at bats tonight, no matter what happens.
Gosh dog it Frenchy!!!
$*@%!
#$%#^%#%@#$@!!!!
Awwww, damn it.
“If you heard me say something intelligent that wasn’t a cliche, here’s why” – Ron Gant as monitor turns to a full moon
Ramirez : “Soft Tissue Injury to Left Middle Finger”
That just sounds weird to me. I don’t know why.
Arthur Rhodes, take me home, to the place where I belong..
Anyone notice Ray is one of the best pitchers on the team?
Wasn’t there a switch-pitcher in the early 20th century? Wouldn’t that be an awesome skill to have?
There is a kid in college that is a switch-pitcher. I am trying to think of his college.
Good thing we can count on our pitching to keep us in the game.
Awww, crap…..
MaCay McSucks
Grybo’s by the bushel.
McBride deserves the doghouse. He pulled a Paronto (allowing Ray’s runs and not his) and killed my hope for a comeback.
Tony Pena Jr., will he hit wnough, dady says yes.
Somebody should shoot up the TS announcers booth at Turner Field.
I really wish Bobby would realize that McBride cannot get righties out, so bringing him in to turn around switch hitters is a really stupid f-ing idea
Abreu is not athletic? Rathbun….
“If they [the Braves] had two or three Smoltzes, I think their starting rotation would be pretty good,” Charlie Manuel said.
No, seriously? You don’t say…
I guess tonight’s game has been full of interesting quotes…LOL
Five straight singles and a home run, and we win this game. How does that sound to you guys?
That would be putting Baby Jesus Powers into overtime, ‘Rissa.
I hate AOL Time Warner. I hate Liberty Media. And I’m really just hating MLB baseball altogether right now. Yanks, Mets in first place and Braves sitting 4th…in their division. Really just sucks a$$.
ANDRUW!!!!
Wow, don’t think I can remember the last time I saw a broken bat homer.
Never seen that.
‘Druw!!!!
Okay, Andruw can hit the home run here, and we’ll just lose by 3…
DRUW!!!!!!
ANDRUW!!!
One more baserunner.
McCann! c’mon Jeff!
Frenchy, follow Andruw’s lead…
On the bright side, now Geary can get the save.
BMAC!!
How many first pitches has he taken now? Improving.
How fitting that Francoeur makes the last out.
Yeah, Frenchy thought he would save Huck from striking out yet again today.
Blame the pitching. Again. You’re not gonna win many games giving up 9 runs.
Oh well. Too little too late. I hate losing.
did he strike out?
oh well….
What a game everyone…High fives and Ass slaps for everyone.
If LaRoche were batting instead of Francoeur he’d have hit a 3-run home run there. And it would have bounced off the Phillies that would have led off the 10th to get them all out in advance.
Way to go, Francoeur.
no grounded out to second
“If LaRoche were batting instead of Francoeur he’d have hit a 3-run home run there. And it would have bounced off the Phillies that would have led off the 10th to get them all out in advance.”
If Francoeur got on, LaRoche would have hit a tying home run off of Tom Gordan and then Bobby Cox would have used Tyler Yates in the tenth instead of Baez or Wickman and the Braves would lose regardless.
