Lineup prediction for today:
Giles
Renteria
Thorman
Andruw
McCann
Frenchy
LaRoche
Orr
Hudson
i believe lou pinella will be be doing color for this game
Anyone else wondering if Aybar might be starting today instead of Orr at third? Orr hasn’t really been doing much, so we might as well give Aybar a shot.
can orr play 3rd?
Yes, but I wouldn’t put him there to save my life.
Oh, don’t get me started about Tim McCarver. The worst part about him is that he tries to sound smart but comes off sounding really stupid.
Bobby has played Orr at third earlier this season and he will do it again.
Might as well, no other choice because Aybar isn’t here. This is probably his last game with the Braves anyway with Aybar coming.
Is Aybar capable of playing SS? If he can, then there’s still a roster spot for Orr (who’s only played one inning at SS, and who I wouldn’t dare put there). If not, it might be sayonara to him.
Words are spreading that little Tony has been promoted to take Betemit’s place on the roster before Ayber and Baez joining the team tomorrow. Then, Chipper will be DL. Then Ayber will be the everyday third baseman when Chipper is on DL with Orr and little Pena being the backup infielders.
The big question is once Aybar joins the team will Bobby try him at lead off finally allowing Giles to move down to a more comfortable position.
This is as close to a must win game as it gets in July. We need a big performance from Huddy. If he turns in another stinker, trade him.
i know this is not about the mets, but id like some of your thoughts on a milledge for zito deal. Most mets fans are not so high on it. Others figgure a corner outfielder comes a dime a dozen so we should go for it. What is your take ? seeing how you also just traded for a couple month rental would you make this trade?
how many more years is chipper under contract with the braves by the way?
The Mets aren’t getting any younger. I would do the Milledge for Zito trade in a heartbeat. There is no guarantee they will have more chances to win a championship after this year with their very old rotation. The Braves don’t figure to suck next year as bad as they have this year and the Marlins are a rapidly improving team. The division won’t be as easy in ’07.

Jenny, did you have a chance to round up an IP address for today’s game, please let me know !!! As always, I appreciate it
Hudson should be hitting 8th…
Laroche batting third….hmmm…..I have a feeling it might work out with Andrew for protection…..
1914 Update:
NY Giants 52-33 (–)
Chicago Cubs 51-39 (3.5 GB)
St. Louis Cardinals 51-42 (5)
Boston Braves 42-45 (11)
Cincinnati Reds 42-48 (12.5)
Philadelphia Phillies 39-48 (14)
Pittsburgh Pirates 38-48 (14.5)
Brooklyn Robins 36-48 (15.5)
Today’s Game:
Cubs 100 110 000 – 3 5 3 LP- Zabel
Braves 203 000 30x – 8 13 2 WP- James
Bill James started two straight games for the Braves, but came out of Wednesday’s game after two innings; that and a rainout left him ready to work again.
While we’re on the subject of utility infieldsers, the Braves had a decent one in George (Possum) Whitted. The Cardinals traded him to the Braves on June 28 along with 4th OF Ted Cather, and he hit a solid 261/ 326/ 376 and stole ten bases. Whitted played the majority of the time in the outfield, since the middle infield had two future Hall of Famers (Rabbit Maranville and Johnny Evers). The guy traded for Whitted and Cather, Hub Perdue, would go 8-8 for the Cardinals in this, his last big league season.
Gonna drive Lando nuts, but LaRoche isn’t a bad #3 hitter.
yeah, i was leaning toward doing the trade myself. Milledge is not as good as people lead him to be. But i would rather trade heilman and some b prospects for zito, there is no telling if he will only be a 2 month rental and then dip to the sox, or yankees. I wouldnt want to give up our teams best prospect for that. Im sure other teams could use a speedy center fielder. But i must say Pedro, Glavine,Zito would be a nice threat come playoffs.
Brain J:
I just dont get it. What up with the 1914 update? Im not being A JERK I just dont understand what its all about?
funny how Franco was telling pitchers last night how to pitch to Frenchy and Andruw. Andruw took the bait in the 8th inning & looked like a poor man’s Pete Orr.
Now we have to face Delgaldo – look for him to pummell tiny tim.
Starting on July 4, when things were looking at their worst, it seemed like a good idea to look back on the 1914 season. The Braves were in last place at midyear, but came back to win the NL pennant and the World Series. Hence, the Update, which tracks the standings, game results, and whatever else I find interesting about baseball on that day in 1914.
I would have batted McCann 3rd, but it probably doesn’t make a whole lot of difference.
I love the pictures of Hudson pitching. He always looks a little ree ree.
Not trying to be a JERK here either and nothing against your fascinating with 1914 but woment couldnt vote during that season. Just seems a little far back to draw comparisons with our situation today.
I wish we traded for starting pitching instead of releif to light a fire under thomson and davies.
Not sure if anybody has mentioned it, but Andy Marte got the callup today for the Indians, just a note if anybody cares.
Will Carroll at Baseball Prospectus says the Braves asked the Cubs about Maddux, but Maddux turned it down.
The anchor at my local sports radio says he hears that Millidge is going to be traded for Zito, probably anounced this afternoon. We have the Mets AAA here in Norfolk, so he may have some good info.
Anyway, I’m just thrilled that I can get the Braves on TV two days in a row.
@ Rip
What the hell does women not being able to vote have to do with baseball?!
Agreed, Sam. Keep the 1914 updates coming!
Proxy server 201.134.139.114 port 4480. It might take a few tries. If you get “access denied” on the MLB page just keep trying, it’ll work eventually.
@ Rip..
It doesn’t matter if women could vote…if dinosaurs still roamed the earth or if the Cubs were in the World Series…
The point is that the BRAVES were in last place..and came back to tin the World Series. Something that we would love to happen this season aswell somehow.. even how unlikely it may be
I wonder why Maddux would turn down the Braves if they were indeed interested. I know he wants to go west (SD, LA, etc.), but I wonder if there is something else there, perhaps Mad Dog is unhappy with how he was treated the last couple of years ??? If that’s the case, that would be certainly unfortunate, because in his prime, there was nobody that I enjoyed watching pitch more than Mad Dog. Truly a master at his craft, and I do root for him to this day.
Kenny Albert and Lou Piniella… oh boy..
Well, it’s better than McCarver..
Wow, I am so happy to listen to Lou instead of McCraver…
Hey Jenny, I’ve never had the game black out on MLBTV and not on TV before. What do I need to do with that proxy server to get the game?
Women had been voting in many states for decades prior to 1914. Wyoming became the first territory to allow women suffrage in 1869, and several other states, mostly in the West, had done so by 1914. (New Jersey had allowed women owning 50 pounds of property to vote from 1776 to 1807.)
jj,
I think that a lot of our pitching woes can be attributed, in part, to the extreme heat and humidity this year. Maybe Maddux doesn’t want to play in that kind of weather anymore. Heck, SD is 75 degrees nearly every day! Just a theory.
If you’re on Firefox, go to Tools->Options->Connection Settings, then click Manual Proxy and type in the IP address followed by the port number, then click OK all the way out and go load MLB.TV. If you’re on IE, I think it’s under LAN Settings or something, but I’m not sure.
And with that, I vote for a shutout from Mr. Hudson, a couple of homers from Andruw, and lots of shots of Laroche’s Lifeguards.
HA…nice throw BMac!
Terrific throw from McCann.
Great timing on the pitch-out. Great job McCann!!!
oh wow, Hudson is pitching great!!!
hudson is a bum
Evil Tim Hudson, present and accounted for.
You gotta be kidding Huddy..
Well, Lou, Huddy doesn’t throw a splitter anymore…
…have I said this before? I HATE BELTRAN.
Jenny, put in the IP address, trying to load the game on mlb.com, but it just stays on the loading screen. Any suggestions? Oh, and Huddy blows.
because of my DC residence and the fact that FOX is inexplicably showing the Nats/Dodgers at 4 pm here, even more inexplicably, they are blacking out the Mets/Braves. I am pissed and FOX’s iron fisted control of Saturday Baseball is sickening.
I just logged on…BAD Hudson on the mound? Arrrgggggg.
at least el duque is a bigger bum
MLB is so well managed that they are preventing their ultimate customers from watching their products. Bud is such a cool guy.
Keep trying, Rob. Proxies can really slow down your connection. You might have to try a few times. Oh, and once you get the stream going, you can turn it off, or you’ll go mad trying to surf.
I’m not really a computer guru, so I can’t give you too much help. Sorry.
I appreciate the help, Jenny.
The FOX Saturday Baseball deal is the worst for sports fan in the entire country, for any sport.
Unlike the NFL, where you at least can GO to a sports bar and watch all the Games (if you don’t have the Ticket) , you are hamstrung, completely screwed, by FOX on Saturday Baseball. Just sucks.
I’m sure Bud will correct the idiotic blackout rules sometime before the end of the century, based on his history.
Did Bud ever correct a problem? I thought he only creates problem…
Thank you, David Wright!
Hahahaah…stupid David Wright…
The chosen one!!!
Jenny, it worked !!! Thank you very much. You are awesome.
Rob, just keep trying would be my advice. It literally took about 20 times to click on the game from the MLB TV page, but it finally worked.
We got one back
kc, Bud does eventually solve some problems. Usually years after creating them, as Expos fan can attest.
Good hustle by Renteria.
Warning track power again!!!
and it’s why Baseball needs a real commissioner. All Bud ever does is screw things up.
If he gave two sh–s abou our beloved Bravos, he wouldn’t allow this evil sale to Liberty Media from evil AOL Time Warner…he would only let an actual HUMAN BEING atek over our beloved franchise that has done a lot for Baseball the last 15 years.
Even Adam’s outs are more prudctive these days…good job.
Oh yeah, forgot the Natspos…that took him long enough…
Hudson better starts throwing more inside. I am sicked of seeing opponents pitching at our hitters’ head.
another heartwrenching strikeout by Andruw. Same thing as last night when we neede him. This is one of those aggravating Andruw stretches.
Our hitters have become clutch with runners in scoring position- they clutch their throats and choke.
amen, Brian J. Actually, Adam has been one of the more reliable guys, amazingly.
Well Alex, at least we are talking about “aggravating Andruw stretches”, not aggravating Andruw YEARS…
I get as far as the MLB.com screen loading. Do I sit and wait on that to finally load or do I go back and keep clicking the icon?
Hudson gives it riight back. At this point, I trust the bullpen more than our starters.
perfect…
kc,
Truthfully, I am with you, I am just careful these days not to be too critical so I don’t get attacked…but yeah, Andruw has had frustrating years, exactly.
Endy Chavez….
great…
agreed about Huddy, after Horam last night. Paronto, Yates…they’ve all been better lately.
Honestly, Andruw has improved a lot over the past two seasons. This version of Andruw is probably the best one we will see.
I doubt we could GIVE Hudson away.
The last 2 days have been an indicator to me that we are likely done now chasing the Wild Card.
The one caveat I kept saying is we were going to have to have 4 really good starting pitchers show up…and Smoltz and Chuck have been average to decent at best, Hoream has been all over the place and Huddy has been awful. Then poor Jason Shiell…
Hudson has entered the Sosa Zone. Is it time to move him to the bullpen and Villareal to the rotation?
Smoltz>James>Ramirez>Hudson>Shiell/Thomson/Sosa
MLB is off, way off…they are all over the place w/ their game coverage. first it says it was 4-1 now its 3-1? what gives?
At least Jorge Sosa almost always got the Braves through the first inning scoreless.
they also didnt even cover Francouer’s K.
Good news: Reyes makes a mistake
Bad news: the bad Hudson has shown up and is now hitting
Why are the Braves playing so terrible at home this season?
The Sosa Zone, hmmm?
You unlock the door wiith an 82-mph straight fastball. Beyond it is another dimension. One not only of sight and sound, but of 3-1 counts and whiplash. A journey into a shocking land whose only limits are websites’ abiltiies to format double-digit ERAs. There’s a signpost up ahead: Richmond, 400 miles. To get there, you must pass through the Sosa Zone.
MARCUS!
Yay Giles. Thank God that Orr is fast, if nothing else.
MARCUS!!!
Marcus!
wont matter once Huddy gives up 5 more runs next inning…
Floyd doesn’t look healthy to me at all…
Remember the good ol’ days when three runs was enough for Tim Hudson to get the win?
I honestly think Marcus will heat up once Betemit is no longer behind is back.
Dan, that must be his Oakland days…
“You unlock the door wiith an 82-mph straight fastball.”
Be fair, it’s about 95 MPH. Everything else is true.
He couldn’t do any worse. But I agree, Hudson’ll just give them back up
Yes.
way to get the inning started right, jacka–.
Now that was a fine looking 3-6-3.
Nice, there is still some hope!!!
3-6-1 to be exact…
BTW… Baez is indeed playing for free from the Braves’ perspective. The Dodgers are picking up his entire salary.
I am personally done with Tim Hudson. The last few starts have given me the distinct impression that we will never see the good Huddy again…the one Oakland had.
Wouldn’t it make more sense to play pete orr where renteria currently is playing during the delgado shift?
Hudson’s pitches are sinking more this inning…trying to look for all the good signs from Huddy…
then renteria would be at his natural ss position and orr would be around 2nd base.
Dodger Thoughts. Not that happy thoughts.
who got hurt?
Delgado’s gone after a HBP, and Julio is running (and no doubt playing 1B) from now on. And stealing second and advancing on a bad throw by McCann.
apparently, Delgado.
Nice play Adam…Orr’s defense scare me to death…
Mark Bradley’s Reponse to the Trade:
I disagree with him…what’s the concensus in here?
http://www.ajc.com/blogs/content/shared-blogs/ajc/sportscolumns/entries/2006/07/29/braves_losers_i.html
Scoreless inning from Huddy!!!
I never like Mark Bradley. He is always trying to be different…maybe that’s his role on the newspaper…
kc,
to make matters worse, he’s always been a Georgia Tech dork.
oh god why did he have to hit delgado? he is going to be out forever now
Looks like a good deal. Aybar’s not much of a step down from Beta Meat, and Baez is a good reliever.
mlb.com strikes (out) again—how did LaRoche get out?
Well, that doesn’t bother me since I didn’t go to college in GA, I know you must hate it!
Why can’t the Braves have a 1-2-3 inning?
And Aybar may even be better eventually then Betemit.
Andruw, strikes out again…tired of this from him.
alex, I like the trade. I compared aybar’s stats to betemit’s, and they’re pretty close. Betemit has an edge in power, obviously, but aybar is faster, younger, can lead off, has a higher OBP, and plays better defense. and he was the throw-in to get baez, whom we could have gotten this offseason. but today mac revealed that the dodgers are paying his salary this year, so to me, this is a good deal.
“….how did LaRoche get out?”
A groundball to first.
Last year, Andruw was at his best when Chipper is NOT in the lineup. This year seems to be the other way around…
kc-
whats your school? and yeah…Tech people annoy me.
It’s good to know that we got Baez for free.
kc,
I have noticed that trend also with ‘Druw.
Brad,
I agree…I like the deal especially with the Dodgers picking up the salary.
Alex, I went to Bucknell in PA.
Huddy is one out away from an 1-2-3 inning!!!
i like the deal, bradley doesn’t have much to write about. why isn’t he picking on vick for claiming he didn’t try in the falcon’s last season game. bradley is punk and i think the deal is great.
wow…a 1-2-3 inning. go figure.
Tim Hudson did it! He appears to have found his groove (and he’ll show me up by melting down next inning, I hope not.)
agreed, Hate King. I commend John Schuerholz on this move considering what he got and the salary situation. Its hard to fault JS for this one.
Seriously, the Braves don’t really need a Cy Young Tim Hudson. As long as Tim allows 3 runs a game, the Braves are in great shape.
At least JS is trying to solve a problem, unlike what he did during the offseason.
kc, agreed.
kc,
You are right. The problem is that Huddy’s era is nearly 5.00. He definitely has to pitch better than that. If his era were 3.75, we would be in great shape, I think.
I like the trade very much. Not that Baez is spectacular, but like Wickman, he’s better than what we’ve had down there for the most part. We’re getting him for free. Aybar can play right now and is younger, and I think has a potentially higher ceiling than Betemit. As I said the other day on here, let’s not remember that the DRays had their choice of Betemit, Orr, or whatever utility infielder they wanted in exchange for Jorge Sosa last Spring Training and they picked Nick Green. If we had asked for Baez from the DRays last year for Betemit, they would have laughed at us. Also as I said the other day, Betemit has had two above average months this year and two below average months, so I think this was about as good as it was going to get for him as far as trade value is concerned.
My problem is that we “targeted” both of these relievers in the off season, but couldn’t get either of them then, and it’s going to cost us the division and we might have dug ourselves such a hole with the ‘pen that it may cost us the playoffs altogether. Why couldn’t we just have gotten both of these guys at the start of the year ??? I think we all can agree that we would be in a much different spot in the standings.
jj3bagger, as much as I want to fault JS, Wickman never wanted to leave Cleveland, and Baez costed the Dodgers Edwin Jackson. Also, they makes a combined salary of over $8M, the Braves can’t afford that.
Come on Adnruw…
Another good inning by Huddy!!!
Andruw “zero hustle” Jones strike again. At least Beltran flew out.
Today is one of those “Andruw Frustration Day”.
kc,
I am with jj3bagger on this one…JS should have gotten us a major arm or two this offseasson and he chance after chance and kept coming up short. It was his fault because he was always being a few mill. cheap.
Had we had a Wickman or Baez or someone of that ilk all season, we’d be MINIMUM 10 gms. better.
Oh Alex, don’t get me wrong, I was just talking about the cases of Wickman and Baez. I still think he should be done something to solve the closer problem. Hoping Reitsma will do the job is probably the stupidest decision I have ever seen.
preach it, alex!
Moreover, if we weren’t better, we’d then have an avenue to improve ourselves via trades of veteran bullpen pitchers that we don’t have this year. After all, if we get swept here, the season is pretty much tanked. Lose another series and we will be out of the wild card as well. Yet, we won’t be able to make many moves because we don’t have expendable and desirable goods.
Very true on the Reitsma thing. A million Braves fans all agreed back in Decmeber he had to be replaced and nothing was done. Now we have some relievers and have to PRAY we can climb back in the WC race and just stay afloat now.
Amen! Praise and testify brother Alex.
All of the sudden, El Duque is pitching like Cy Young.
we have 2 hits today.
The Braves will have their third hit when the Mets make their third error…
…nice play Adam.
The David Wright Montage would have been more effective without the Debbie Gibson music, I think.
thanks for the props, Brad, Dan & kc, but I wish we all weren’t right…:-( I wish JS had just done his job 6 months ago so we all wouldn’t be staring a team 6 games under .500 and almost out of the Playoff picture entirely.
ok…FOX is worshipping Wright…
The Queen of England called…she’s apparently chosen non Brit David Wright for Knight hood.
Seriously Alex, I still don’t fault JS for the Dan Kolb trade. At least he was trying to solve a problem.
Alex, you mean Wright is not the Queen’s adopted son?
kc…I agree. Kolbb wasn’t the answer but no one can be upset if he’s making an effort. But we all agree his effort this past offseason was half assed and that’s why we are in this gaping hole on July 29th. Thankfully, he at least did some things now. Better then nothing.
If the existence of Thorman results to this version of Adam, I wish the Braves continue to keep Thorman.
The Republicans and Democrats bith just called me.
They said they would like to skip the 2008 election and unanimously elect David Wright the next President of the United States.
I thought at least there will be an election between Jeter and Wright!!!
Because then hell would freeze over. I don’t think that the trade is that bad, but it depends obviously on Aybar’s potential coming to fruition and how Baez responds. This is regardless on how Schuerholz plans on dealing with Baez longterm
The 2 political parties have agreed that Jeter will be Wright’s VP.
5 weeks to football season…
Do you really believe Beane will trade Zito?
sigh…
Bad Huddy is like a an STD you just can’t shake…keeps coming back!!!
you must be kidding me…
Ballgame.
It’s over. Please let the Reds lose.
Bad Huddy is ennabled by Bobby Cox. With the way he’s been pitching, most others would have relieved him when Floyd reached base…
leave him in, bobby. he looks good.
Derek Jeter would never be Wright’s VP. That would be like Ann Coulter picking Michael Moore.
I think Ann Coulter has a secret existence as a Dominatrix and Michael Moore is her victim/student.
As a moderate, I wish there was a way those 2 could kill eacother off.
I walked away from the television right when the first hit came and walked back in right in the room when the pticher got the hit. It’s like I was meant to see that torture. This is BS. Hudson is now our official fourth starter.
That’s one mental image I really didn’t need…
Jason,
Then I succeeded! I just gave everyone a more frightful image then even Tim Hudson letting the mets blow this game open!
wow, that was great huh?
i want to demoralize you though. I want it to be 10-3. i want to make sure your team knows they are no where near the mets
I wish that we could have traded Tim Hudson…especially when the rumor mill had him going to the Yanks. He would have been the perfect dead cat to drop in their laps. The only problem is that the Yanks were too smart to invest in Hudson.
I understand the plot now. Huddy pitched “ineffectively” on purpose to wear Hernandez out on the basepaths. Watch out after the flip when we crush the Mets…
Lesser of two evils, I suppose…
endy chavez and hernandez have 5 rbi’s today
Hudson sucks.
This is depressingly like June. We come back from a great road trip to a horrific homestand. Stick a fork in the Braves. They are done. All that’s left is to make changes (trades) with an eye towards the future and at least try to finish above .500.
I am surprised Hudson and the Braves don’t blame Huddy’s continuing mediocrity on an “ongoing oblique muscle problem that’s been going for two years now”.
I knew that was going to happen. Beltran always kills us.
I don’t want to sound pessimistic, but does anyone think that this game is the end of our season?
perfect. hey js, need some more pitching, please.
Go to hell.
And Chad Paronto has removed all doubts.
Ron,
Yup.
3 outs woohoo!!!
Yes Rob J, this does mean we’re done. Since there is no starting pitching at all that can help us.
hey, NY mets, nowhere is one word. go to your own blog.
I gotta say…this game does kinda feel like the proverbial, “straw that broke the camels’ back”.
10-3 I called it………hahahaha im sorry but this should put to rest all questions of the mets being a better team. You lost a series you had to win, and at home no less. It is all over. Give the mets the nl east title right now!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry but i have been waiting to say that for some time now. I wish your team luck for the wild card
Cheers!!
Dan
We are trying to get back in the Wild Card race, while getting ready lose 4 out of 5 at home. At this point I would be happy if we reach.500 without trading away good prospects…
Stafford…we just ignore him and pretend he doesn’t exsist.
the braves are the most frustrating team to watch in baseball
I’m not going to call an end to the season right in the middle of a horrible game. I’d prefer to think about it first. Otherwise, I’d make an emotional decision and start cussing up a storm. Not a good thing in my opinion. I do have to wonder what is going on in JS head. Rebuild/Reload or plug on in HOPES for a good outcome this year.
agree, rod. unless something major happens, which i dont see.
good run, boys. just didn’t have enough this year.
special congrats go to mr. reitsma, for personally burying this team into an insurmountable hole by the end of may.
honorable mention: giles–good time to have the worst year of your career.
Chipper: thank you for staying healthy.
orr/pratt: what can I say, guys? every day you’re on this team must feel like winning the lottery. division/wild card winners don’t use guys like you in major roles.
cox: thank you for continuing to use reitsma/remlinger in close games. thank you for batting laroche ahead of mccann most of the 1st half when laroche was batting .200 and mccann was leading the NL.
and a special thanks goes to our GM, mr. shuerholz. thank you for ruining this season for millions of fans. thank you for your stubborn unwillingness to improve the team this offseason as you sat and watched your rival GM, omar minaya, destroy you. thank you for finally getting some bullpen help, now that we’re behind the $15-million marlins. thank you for trading betemit the day chipper got hurt again. just a host of brilliant moves.
and with that, your 2006 atlanta braves.
I doubt that, teddy, there has to be some other team that’s more frustrating. What about Dodgers?
you see, i live in new york – have all my life – i work at major league baseball surrounded by a bunch of mets fans, and i get so frustrated with their lack of intelligence and huge mouths. so, while ignoring him would be prudent, forgive my inability to do so.
i know, i know. “schuerholz”
Do we even any “good” prospects at this point?
Tim Hudson’s ERA now sits at a balmy 5.25. Unbelievable.
Boy, this team will be intersting in my whatifsports.com project that I’m getting ready for.
What’s your whatifsports.com project, Sam?
And I think I may go to that site myself soon, just to see some of the better Braves team in action….
As to NYMets fan: I don’t want to concede anything yet, but congrats…but I must say I hope you guys get a team that’s hot going into the postseason as your first round opponent, then you’ll understand what we’ve gone through the last few years.
It’s just like that game against the Dodgers right after a great roadtrip and a sweep of the Cubs. Come home and get slaughtered. It has all the makings, massacre after massacre and first inning leads for the other teams.
48-55 is so bad I can’t even look at it. And we’ll still be 6.5 out of the wildcard, maybe 7.5. This sucks.
Just bean David Wright with a fastball and I’ll feel better.
Nah, I prefer the Mets get swept in the first round. That will feel good.
steal 2nd endy!!!!
^That may very happen. I mean, if one team gets hot and plays the Mets as the wild card, who knows?
I’m sure I don’t want to see the Mets in the World Series, though. No offense, NYMets, but I don’t want to go through 2000 again.
I’m not quite ready to throw in the towel on the season, but this game does certainly raise the question of what to do with Tim Hudson though. I really can’t believe that he is pitching this badly while healthy. There simply HAS to be something wrong with him physically. Maybe it’s a nagging oblique injury that’s causing him to alter his mechanics that plagued him last year as well. His velocity is clearly there. I just really can’t believe after how well he pitched for his whole career that he would just suddenly start pitching like the pile of crap that he’s been pretty much his entire Brave tenure. We obviously can’t trade him for much of anything, and if he is injured, the time has come to DL him and let a healthy pitcher pitch and get Huddy back to 100%.
I was racking my brain and trying to think historically if there had been a case of a pitcher with the type of winning percentage and career ERA like Hudson switching leagues in his prime, no less, and then falling off the map as dramatically as he has in such a short period of time. I came up with nothing, and have no idea for the solution to the problem …. Ideas ???
how would the mets get swept in the first round? we are not the braves, plus we are better then anyone else in the nl. The only team that makes me a little nervous are the cards. and we wouldnt play them untill the nlcs
im not saying we will win the world series, just that we will go to the world series
Great, now Fox is basically calling our season over. You know they and ESPN have to be salivating at the fact that the Bravos may not make the postseason at all.
Now, if there was some way to make the World Series automatically Mets vs. the winner of Yankees/Red Sox, then they’d be set….
Good ol Huddy on top of his game again. Maybe the Mets will take him off our hands and give us Glavine back.
that is going to happen anyways. Mets/redsox
Well, the Braves have only been swept once in the NLDS…and again, I’m just saying, watch out for a hot team. Last year at this time, very few of us were worried about the Astros, so you never know….
i could see the cards getting hot. Their pitching has not hit their stride. Even the Reds could have a hot streak comming. 2 good teams
to consider
^Definately. One team you might want to think about if they get hot (and that’s a BIG if) is…Houston. Seriously….a rotation of Clemens, Oswalt, and Pettitte, if they pitch well, can be scary.
And if Pedro gets hurt late in the season, that could change everything….but I’d hate for that to happen. As much dislike I have for the Mets, I’d at least like to see them at full strength for the playoffs.
@ Rob J.
Well, I’ve spent hours making lineups and starting rotations for all the Braves teams in history, usually going with the stats or my gut on who should be in the lineups and rotation. Using these, I will have two March Madness-like tournaments: a Best of the Best and the Best of the Worst, if you will. Seven teams will be the low seeds in the Best side and the top seeds on the Worst side. I expect these 2006 Braves to fall around that area, so I’ll have to change my brackets when the season is done. I plan to sim seven-game series for each matchup, whatever comes up, I stick with, even if it’s freaky. If anyone can give me a better way to do this, tell me.
As if the day could get any worse, Chipper is officially back on the DL.
Chipper on the DL, Thomson out for the year, Hudson losing his touch, Ramirez is streaky, we still don’t have a true leadoff hitter, and Smoltz is on track to pitch more innings then he did last year. Can things get any worse?
@Sam
Interesting. Somehow, I have my money on the 1998 team…shame they couldn’t get past the Padres.
Thanks Rob, No one should hope injury on anyone. Yeah houston could do some damage. Those 3 are good teams. I just really want the mets to win this year. I was 4 when they last won. I think its a little over due. I know the cubs are more deserving but I think the mets should win one too.
rob broad:
you forgot hampton
The Tigers are more than likely going to take the whole thing.
Hampton is a given, you pompous Mets fan.
lol
pompous is a funny word
I can think of a lot of funny words, but I’ll keep them to myself.
oh come on and share
hey NYMets, where were you at the last five years exactly???
the tigers???? more like the sox….you can pick the color
not online in chat rooms. I didnt even know your site was around untill early this year
Tigers have the best record in baseball. By far. They punished the Sox and the Yankees in their series.
mac:
you do have a good blog by the way. No a$$$ kissing, just being honest. But you know you lost the deal right?
dont count out the champs, Never count out a team that just won the world series
regular season is just a little different form post season, no?
Thanks, Rob. 🙂 The 1998 team does look good. I seeded based on winning percentage and postseason success. The top three teams, therefore, are 1995, 1957 and 1914. Even though the 1999 Braves won 106 games, I felt like the 1996 team should be a #1 seed instead of them. That is the only exception I made.
The 1998 Braves, even after the changes, will go up against the 1962 Braves in the first round. That’s hairy.
Tigers want it more. They’re like the 2004 Red Sox.
Time will tell, no playoff experience/ a team that just went all the way.
i have to respectfully disagree
Dozing off in the 3rd inning and waking up now to a 10-3 score is not making my afternoon all that nice..
damn dude, its like a bad dream for you. lol
I’ll take the Tigers or Twins to win it all. Two best pitching staffs in baseball.
And playoff experience is the biggest load of crap. How much playoff experience did the ChiSox have last year?
NY METS: Please behave. You are not being entertaining, you are merely being annoying. Stop, or I will take steps. Again.
buzz off
@Sam
Keep us posted on your tournament. When will it start?
Well, I’m waiting until this season is over so I can add the 2006 Braves to it. In the meantime, I’m writing up season capsules, which is pretty painstaking depending on the team.
@Sam
Awesome…if you need any help, let me know. 🙂
I could use some help on the season summaries for each team. That way, it would get done faster.
Okay…just tell me what you need for those and I’ll see what I can do.
Basically, who did well and any interesting tidbits about the players on the team.
Fascinating. You can send me an email of what teams you’d like me to do, and I can do my best with whatever information I can dig up.
