Well, Betemit doesn’t have a lot of experience at 2B (AFAIK), so he should improve the more he plays there. I’d be more comfortable with Betemit as the “super-sub”, but he could be a servicable every-day 2B. I’d prefer to move Langerhans… but who wants him?
But like others have noted, the Braves have had awful luck this year, combining numerous injuries to pitchers with off-years from guys who could be traded. Players like Salty, KJ, and Giles are just not worth much these days, and the only reason we’d need to move them is because guys like Devine and Boyer have been hurt.
It would just be nice to acquire someone who could stick at the back of the rotation and let the other guys out there establish a role.
Oh well. I’m content to let our offense carry us for a few games.

Joey,
(and everyone)–do we all feel this is the real Thorman and that he can be a very productive Major Leaguer, long term? Just wondering. I like what I am seeing and thinking we could put Thor at 1st in 2007 and aquire an outfielder for left?
Alex, if his stats this season at Richmond is an indicator, Thorman has a greater upside than Adam. Otherwise, Thorman has been very similar to Adam before this season started.

Thorman’s had to make an adjustment at each level as he’s come up, but his production at Myrtle Beach in 2004 (299/ 358/ 461), Mississippi in ’05 (305/ 360/ 506), and Richmond this year (324/ 394/ 570) indicate that he’s likely for real. And at 24, he’s not finished developing. I think this is the real Thorman, and this is a guy who can be an above-average 1B for several years to come.

I doubt that’s the Braves’ Steve Avery…there would’ve been something in the article or on ESPN at some point about it if so.
I like what I am seeing from Thor and with those rising Minor League numbers, thats very hopeful. To me, clearly better then LaRoche but I am biased anyway. Plus, also unlike LaRoche, he hustles.
brule–do you think Peavy’s injuries are heading him towards Mark Prior territory? I hope not. Even if he doesn’t play for the Braves, i hope the kid has a good career.
I think Dusty is the modern day Tommy Lasorda when it comes to ruining pitchers. But as Mac has pointed out to me (and I agree with this), Tommy Lasorda hates all pitchers because he is still a bitter man from his days as a pitcher and getting overlooked by some guys named Koufax and Drysdale. I am not sure Dusty is deliberately trying to wear out his pitchers the way Lasorda did (or at least on a sub conscience or pasta unconconscience level), whereas Dusty simply doesn’t know what he’s doing.

I just hope we now turn this into more runs.

Paronto’s stats are actually pretty decent, compared with the rest of the bullpen: 30 IP (counting this inning), 27 H, 10 R, 2 HR, 12 BB, 26 K, 3.00 ERA. So how come he inspires so little confidence? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not sold on him either, but he does produce results.

McBride has great numbers against lefties. He just walks almost every right handed bat he sees. Since he’s seen more right than left this year, he has bad overall numbers. Situationally, he’s an asset.
Joey, agreed…he only should be used against lefties but Bobby doesn’t like to be weighed down my match-ups and just wants to “feel” the right decisions out.
I’m a big McBride fan and have been disappointed in his performance this year. His stuff just doesn’t look as good as it did last year. But (until last night) he’d devastated lefties and been one of the best LOOGYs in the business.

“BTW… as of last night, the Braves have scored more runs this season than they’ve allowed. ”
Yeah. The weird thing is that it seems like they’ve gone on offensive binges (like the very beginning of the season and then again now) where they’ve just out-scored people by huge margins. It’d be nice to just have some scoring consistancy over the course of the year.
When Savannah had the Single A Braves, I was very little when some youngsters named Dale Murphy, Glenn Hubbard, Rafael Ramirez, Bob Horner, Bruce Benedict, Rick Mahler and others came through.
While no one would complain if the Braves score 10 a night the rest of the year (which might be enough to keep JS from having to get a reliever), we can all agree that if we could just be consistent and always score 4-5 and get consistent starters, we will be fine. Plus, we still need to add a reliever…unless we intend to actually score 10 a night, every night, the rest of the year.

The Mets are not playing good in Chicago….maybe we can gain another game.
Thanks for reminding us about the other game…GO CUBS.
I really think the Mets are a perfect candidate to fall apart…Pedro doesn’t appear healthy and they can’t rely on El Duque to be a stud again. If they don’t get another frontline starter, they are in some trouble down the stretch.
I think that the save rule should be modified that any Braves pitcher who finishes a win should be credited with one, because the bullpen is capable of blowing any lead.
Jay10
on July 16, 2006 at 5:37 pm
Your welcome, BTW El Duque’s pitch count is in the mid 30’s and he is still in the first.
It’s only San Diego to St. Louis (maybe a 2 and 1/2 hr. flight) and the Braves will be there at a reasonable hour tonight and their game tomorrow is a night game…it’s really not too bad if you think about it.
Mac, I could not agree more. Ray deserves a save there. A five run lead with our bullpen never feels safe.

Neither would I. Peavy’s a terrific pitcher, better than anyone on the current Braves staff. But we’ve beaten the crap out of him, and a generally excellent Padres staff, all series. Young, Hoffman, Linebrink… and we’ve touched them for 32 runs so far.
Man, with a ptiching staff, this team could beunstoppable.
Happy b-day to TP!
Frenchy.,…
Yeah, this lineup has been good all year, and Thorman just makes it better. (As does playing Betemit over Marcus.)
Okay, now’s not the time to let them get back into things…
Told ya the Padres announcers are worse, Alex. I want to punch them in the mouth.
40 strikes. 11 balls. Go Chuck.
The Padres announcers are terrible. I am so glad I don’t have to listen to them after today.
Land,
Gosh, I had to listen to those morons in the car on the way home from a friend’s house through the 1st 2 innings on my XM Radio and they were HORRIBLE…Not that I like olur Turner South guys, but they are Skip & Joe next to the horrible Pod people.
Joey,
(and everyone)–do we all feel this is the real Thorman and that he can be a very productive Major Leaguer, long term? Just wondering. I like what I am seeing and thinking we could put Thor at 1st in 2007 and aquire an outfielder for left?
Mac (or anyone?)
Is this OUR Steve Avery? God I hope not.
http://www.wsaw.com/home/headlines/3278146.html
Alex, if his stats this season at Richmond is an indicator, Thorman has a greater upside than Adam. Otherwise, Thorman has been very similar to Adam before this season started.
Go Frenchy.
Peavy is impregnable but isn’t hard of approach. He has a couple of shortcomings. Most of all, I think his pitching form is a little dangerous. So injury of arm is exposed and feel fatigued easily.
Clark…unless everyone from Michigan is named Steve Avery because that local station is set in Michigan.
I think Prior is basically destoryed by Dusty rather than Prior’s own shortcoming…
kc,
I think Dusty is the modern day Tommy Lasorda when it comes to ruining pitchers.
Alex, I tend to believe Dusty doesn’t know what he is doing with the pitchers.
I don’t like this.
And that’s the one weakness with Thor and why we need him to play first…Langerhans likely can make that play but Thor’s bat is far better.
jeez..
agreed, kc.
and agreed, Mac.
Time for chucky to come out.
And ythe worst part? If we don’t get some of these runs back, we will actually have to count on our bullpen.
I don’t think this is “the real” Thorman. Ideally, he’s a guy we’d like to platoon (with Diaz and KJ in LF?) becuase I figure we’ll be able to acquire a right-handed hitting 1B who can hit lefties without too much difficulty….
And now Chucky is having issues.
Thor belongs at First. Trade Giles and Huckleberry for a good reliever and we are golden.
Thor doesn’t normally play outfield so I don’t blame him.
Land…I agree…they are tradeable (enough) commodities to get us some relief help.
Does JS just sleep all day dreaming of his next book? I don’t even SEE any rumors involving the Braves.
I got an infection in my neck on Friday, and I have noticed that every time we give up a run, it throbs painfully. Needless to say, I’m not feeling great right now.
He was safe?
He didn’t swing?
Shh, Joey. Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.
Man that plate ump’s face is going to explode.
I am on the AJC page right now, and I saw this new Blog posting by D.O.B.:
http://www.ajc.com/blogs/content/shared-blogs/ajc/braves/entries/2006/07/16/no_reason_for_b.html
This is in direct contrast to what Mark Bradley said in his column the other day.
I am with D.O.B. Why should the suddenly hot Braves only 5 out of the WC give up?
To be fair to Bochy here, I think the ump overreacted and we likely got a break on the call. Bochy didn’t seem overly crazed at first and the situation could have been defused.
I just hope we now turn this into more runs.
AHAHAHAH, listen to those Padres announcers whine and bitch!
Most unprofessional pair of announcers I have ever heard.
I like Prior’s stuff, but that’s too bad.
I think Bruce Bochy knows Peavy’s faults well. And I’ve noticed he sometimes give a chance to take a long rest to Peavy! Maybe Bochy doesn’t want be a Prior.!!! just thought !!!
We definitely got a huge break.
Somewhere, the ghost of Eric Gregg is cringing…
True. But that was an absolutely HORRIBLE call. The third base ump fell asleep.
Lando, Skip and Pete are saying the same stuff on the radio. Apparently it as that bad of a call.
That was such a blatant swing. I’d be pissed if I was Bochy, too.
Land…thank God I am home and listening to Torborg drone on.
Cry me a river! My god, just shutup already.
You are so lucky Alex. I’ve never heard announcer go off on an ump on the air like those two just did. Pathetic.
I would have been thrilled to get more runs that inning but we probably didn’t deserve them so we can’t be too mad about Druw’s DP.
Oh My GOD…there’s a technical problem with “MLB Extra Inningfs” and while they held their logo on screen…they played PORN music!!!!!!
And now, Bad Paronto.
I’m not mad at the announcers. If it had been going against us, we would have been bitching until we all passed out. That call was absolutely inexcusably terrible. Totally obvious that the umpires weren’t paying attention in the slightest. Chipper was WALKING AWAY to the dugout, for crying out loud! Good grief.
And you want unprofessional? How about that home plate umpire blowing up like Milton Bradley?
Jenny…I agree…plus, Bochy didn’t seem to be acting that crazy until the ump went nuts? That was the weird part. i think Bochy (who loves Cox and they get along very well), is generally one of the more congenial managers.
I cant believe we are going to try and rely on our bullpen for 4 innings.
I hope our offense has something left…we will need it.
What exactly is “porn music” alex?
groan…can we please get fatso out? why didnt he use Yates in this spot? Yates is better then Fatso.
Thank God. Paronto Gryboski’d Barfield.
I hate to say it, Alex, but Paronto might be the best guy in the pen right now.
Hey everyone, just got in and glad to the Braves winning and Chipper extending his streak.
Land,
Since we aren’t talking and only typing, I can’t exactly tell you what porn music sounds like.
Speaking of being creeped out by music, has anyone else seen the scary MC Hammer “Turner South” RAP with, amongst others, Dale Murphy, Phil Niekro, Smoltzie and Kyle Davies getting “jiggy with it”?
It’s creepy.
Last night when he started to warm up, he was called the “Bodyguard”.
By the way, according to that same O’Brien AJC Blog, apparently Smoltz has come out and openly campaigned for a relief trade!!!
If the Phillies were far more out of it, I would love to get Tom Gordon.
Yeah, I see Yates and I see 13 walks in 18 innings. ick.
Paronto would be a seventh inning guy at best on most teams, mop up on others, but he could close for the Braves.
Francoeur is HOT. Man, he’s pissed.
OK, WTF is wrong with Dreckman?
Brian,
Maybe it’s his Chris Farley physique. Plus, he pulls a Gryboski all the time…
I think the Ump tossed Frenchy to win favor with the Pod fans. I actually think Bobby wanted to get tossed here a lot of it because he’s friends with Bochy.
Did someone urinate in Dreckman’s orange juice this morning? Good Lord.
This ump needs to be fired. That is totally uncalled for.
Well that was actually really entertaining. I’ve never seen Jeff get that worked up. Can anyone read lips?
When your name is DRECKMAN, you can’t be any good.
What happened?
Yeah, he called Dreckman a “son of a terrorist whore”.
Okay, not really. Skip did say that Dreckman needed a “chill pill”.
he is making the world cup refs look restrained…
Maybe Dreckman should take part in the 7th inning stretch and stop drinking 15 Red Bulls to swallow down a super sized bag of M&M’s before a game starts.
Nevermind I just saw it on Baseball Tonight.
As elsewhere in the world, sanity from the umps would be a refreshing change.
OneEye beat me to the World Cup reference. Good grief. Dreckman has a really, really short fuse today. Too short. If he’s feeling like that, he shouldn’t be behind home plate. Ridiculous.
OneEye…if this was like the World Cup…Jeff would have run up to within 3 feet of Dreckman and then flipped his body over and pretended to be hurt…much like the crap gthat Portugal pulled in that BS called Portugal/England game.
WTF, I step away for 5 mins and Frenchy and Cox get ejected???
If Dreckman has an anurism (spelling?) soon, will anyone be surprised?
Yeah, Thorman needs to hang around first base. That’s his future.
Aneurysm.
You’re going down, Durocher.
It’s “aneurysm.” And the guy needs anger management.
Land,
They went off since they also had to listen to the Padres announcers.
Thorman is definitely a first baseman but a HORRIBLE left fielder.
We may need to take Thor out for defensive purposes here in the 7th. We have Diaz and Langy since one is in for Frenchy.
Both Peavy and Prior have confidence their own stuff. They are all talented, young , aggressive. I think good manager should take care of his guys. Baker didn’t. On that score, I love Bobby. He loves all his guys.
Thorman looks like me or Mac out there playing left–yikes.
Langerhans is in for Frenchy.
dang it… I don’t get TS of all games this had to be on the one channel I don’t get!
I know how you feel Miranda.
And that’s what McBride does well. Plus he got some exercise!
Miranda and Jay-
Not sure where you guys live but I live in Virginia but bought the MLB Extra Innings package through my Comcast Cable digital package. If you have digital cable, you can buy the rest of the season?
Walky McBride gets the third out. Have we ever had this many blobs on our pitching staff before? We’ve had Kerfeld and Forster, but not at the same time.
Yeah, McBride has LOOGY written all over him.
At least he does something well… unlike some relievers I could mention…
McBride has Krispy Kreme written all over him, more likely.
Mmm… donuts…
LOOK. Macay McBride was terrible yesterday, but he is on the mound today. Only Bobby can do it.
McBride has great numbers against lefties. He just walks almost every right handed bat he sees. Since he’s seen more right than left this year, he has bad overall numbers. Situationally, he’s an asset.
Thanks Alex R.
With all those fat relievers (and hey, McCann is pudgy too), you can only imagine how bad the bathroom smells in that locker room!
By the way, maybe Wilson Betemit should be our everyday leadoff hitter?
Just a thought.
Joey, agreed…he only should be used against lefties but Bobby doesn’t like to be weighed down my match-ups and just wants to “feel” the right decisions out.
Yes, Marcus played Fri. and we scored a lot, but I agree, AAR, Betemit gets on base…Bobby has to see this?
I don’t have digital cable… I need to get it though… I’ll have to work on that
Betemit’s power might be wasted leadoff. Renteria would be a better bet. Renteria has only two more HRs than Betemit in more than twice as many ABs.
Chip!!!
can we listen to the game over the internet for free?
Good Lord, Chipper’s locked in.
I’m a big McBride fan and have been disappointed in his performance this year. His stuff just doesn’t look as good as it did last year. But (until last night) he’d devastated lefties and been one of the best LOOGYs in the business.
Hate King, try checking http://www.thegamelive.com
(Jenny mentioned that link on here a while ago)
Miranda,
Between my Big Screen High Def. TV, my DVR, my Digital Cable and HBO (and the MLB package), I have a good life–and a very patient wife!
(though she very much enjoys the Big screen TV also!)
But in all seriousness…digital cable and DVR in particular are always worth it to me. I would be hard pressed to ever not have these things anymore.
Bases loaded for McCann.
That’s what I like to see.
haha… oh now I would love that life too!!
And that’s why I like to see it!
God…McCann is so clutch. LOVE that kid.
WOOHOO!!! McCann!!
If Kim Jong-Il gets into the game, we still can whittle it down to a save situation.
I want nothing more in life than to bear Brian McCann’s children.
golly, it’s been a while since I thought we could simply ‘out score’ teams. Here’s to the roll.
Now maybe the bullpen can hold on.
And Giles is getting on base, too. .469 OBP in July (in 49 PA). We’ve got a very fun little dilemma in the infield, which means we can dangle Giles or Betemit as needed.
Alex,
Thanks, I’ll try it out. I live in SC and we don’t get turner south. Has anyone been to a pelicans game? I’m thinking about making it up to one soon.
Miranda,
Yeah…TV and sports were a big deal in my house growing up in Savannah so that has only grown now that I am older…but, thankfully I have a College Degree and love to read too (and work out) so I do other things besides enjoy all those electronic gizmos. 🙂 But glad to have ’em!
Speaking of reading, Mac…I just got the Lewis Black book and can lend it to you when I am done…he’s so hilarious.
BTW… as of last night, the Braves have scored more runs this season than they’ve allowed.
To be frank with you, Macay McBride has a control problem and bad location you know. +sigh+
Hate King…I remember the Pelicans, but growing up in Savannah, it was the Savannah Braves and then the Savannah Cardinals (whom I was the bat boy for in 1990, a little Alex R. trivia) for me.
Gee, Diaz, we could have left Thor out for plays like that.
When Savannah had the Single A Braves, I was very little when some youngsters named Dale Murphy, Glenn Hubbard, Rafael Ramirez, Bob Horner, Bruce Benedict, Rick Mahler and others came through.
mraver,
While no one would complain if the Braves score 10 a night the rest of the year (which might be enough to keep JS from having to get a reliever), we can all agree that if we could just be consistent and always score 4-5 and get consistent starters, we will be fine. Plus, we still need to add a reliever…unless we intend to actually score 10 a night, every night, the rest of the year.
The Mets are not playing good in Chicago….maybe we can gain another game.
Jay,
Thanks for reminding us about the other game…GO CUBS.
Your welcome, BTW El Duque’s pitch count is in the mid 30’s and he is still in the first.
Go Cubs…lets make this 11 games. I believe in not giving up our NL East crown, just yet….
Jeez he is sweating like Big Red.
I really wish we didn’t have to travel across the country to play tomorrow. Jet lag is not something we need right now.
Well at least I will be able to watch the games against St.Louis.
A win. A sweep. And Andruw got up kinda slow. I hope he’s OK.
Kruger,
It’s only San Diego to St. Louis (maybe a 2 and 1/2 hr. flight) and the Braves will be there at a reasonable hour tonight and their game tomorrow is a night game…it’s really not too bad if you think about it.
SWEEP….5 straight
Later…time to go & get some dinner. Nice, nice sweep.
We Win!! WooHoo!!!
http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060716&content_id=1559766&vkey=news_atl&fext=.jsp&c_id=atl
Mac, I could not agree more. Ray deserves a save there. A five run lead with our bullpen never feels safe.
“I sure hope we make some moves,” Smoltz said. “I hope we do something. If we can crawl back into this, it would be nothing more than to give us some veteran help down there. We’re relying on a lot of young guys. It just would help.”
“[Whatever],” Jones responded. “That ball was well over 500 feet.”
(Talking about his 453 foot bomb.)
Alex, you’re absolutely right. Here’s hoping the bats stay hot and the arms, well, just bring ’em. We’ll need ’em all.
El Duque doesn’t get out of the 2nd inning.
