It’s so hard to pick a favorite Torborgism.
“You simply can’t win when your bullpen continues to surrender the lead.”
“It’s my opinion that you want to score as many runs as possible early in the game.”
“If you want to score runs, you have to have men get on base and then be able to drive them in.”

Fantasy question: I’m in first place in my division and gearing up for a title drive. I have three stud keeper pitchers (Felix Hernandez, Francisco Liriano, Cole Hamels) for keeper prices. I can keep Felix and Liriano twice more (through 2008) and Hamels thrice more (through 2009) all at roughly $3 salary each year. I’ve been offered any two guys with high (non-keeper) salaries on another team’s roster for one of these three.
Here is the list of players offered:
I have bats like Guerrero, Beltran, Sexson and Chavez, and I have arms like Buehrle, Kazmir, Turnbow and Burnett. I would swing two of those your way for one of your young pitching studs Liriano, Felix or Hamels.
My rotation is fairly weak outside the top 3 guys (Pedro, Danny Haren, Liriano). My lineup is strong but I would consider changing out either my 3B (Melvin Mora) or an OF (Abreu, JD Drew, Jermaine Dye).
My inclination at this point is to ask for either two pitchers ( of the Buehrle/Kazmir/Burnett trio) or one pitcher and either Guerrero or Belrtan, but I keep waffling.
Any thoughts?
Kyle S
on June 28, 2006 at 10:52 am
Oh, and the player I am inclined to trade is Hamels, despite his extra year of keeper eligibility, because of durability concerns and his lack of a quality third pitch. I will not trade Liriano under any circumstances.
I’d take Buehrle and Kazmir or Kazmir and Guerrero.
Stu
on June 28, 2006 at 10:56 am
My inclination would be to go for Buehrle (low walks, lotsa wins) and Kazmir (ks, etc.), if the pitching is where you need help. (That’s a pretty solid outfield, assuming Dye doesn’t completely flop.) Also, King Felix would not be the keeper I’d trade.
If you go with hitting, I’d take Beltran over Guerrero, because of the SBs and the massive amounts of protection in his lineup.

Oh, I should have mentioned this is a points based league rather than standard roto. So players who are valuable in real life (high OBP, etc) are actually valuable in our league.
Has anyone looked at A-Rod’s home/road splits? He’s dramatically better on the road. It makes me think that all the booing is having an effect on him. Stupid Yankee fans. Like he’s doing it on purpose. I feel a little bad for the guy. But not that bad. He’s making $25 million, after all.

I don’t think any Braves fan should criticize Yankee fans for booing pAy Rod. Not when you see the stuff you see on Braves message boards about Braves players/management etc. Basically cyber-booing!
IMO, there’s no worse fan base around than the Braves and i’m a Braves fan saying that! Watch this coming week when STL comes to ATL, it’ll be a freakin’ sea of red and i’m not talking Braves red! Although maybe the Cards current 8 game losing streak will stop some of that, but their fans actually support their team regardless unlike a lot of our fans so there probably will be a sea of STL red.
And it’s interesting how our bullpen seems to pitch better on the road(atleast this road trip) than at home. Maybe it’s b/c our relievers don’t get booed like they do at home, even if they give up just one baserunner the booing begins!

Our bullpen didn’t win the AL MVP last season, nor does it have a history of incredible and consistent production.
And the booing didn’t start until after the bullpen gave the fans reason to boo. The Yankees fans are booing A-Rod EVERY SINGLE TIME he makes an out, and with EVERY SINGLE ERROR he makes.
It’s a bit ridiculous, and there’s really no comparison to the Atlanta situation.

When you make more money than anyone else in Major League baseball, you are going to be expected to be perfect. So, while it’s A-Rod fault for signing the contract (or is it the Rangers fault for offering it to him?) the difference between his raod numbers and home numbers are sad. It would be hard to play your best when you’re constantly booed or critized for every little thing. That and having to play in Jeter’s shadow.
So, I’m with Jenny (and Stu). I feel a little bad, but not too much. Imagine what kind of player he would be if he had the support of the home fans…

I called both numbers listed on the above link and actually talked for 10 minutes to a fella at TS. I get the feeling that he has been fielding many many calls from us. (fans) He was very nice, listened and then explained the Networks’ (read:FOX) current position. He also said that they would evaluate the decisions at the end of the season. He was pretty cool, but I get the feelingthat we would get further by going to the Braves management and ‘encouraging’ them to move more games back to TBS – especially now that TSouth is no longer part of the AOL-TW umbrella.
Tggrschult, what did the guy say about Fox’s position. I’m tempted to call that number myself and give them my two cents. I can’t stand this any longer. Rathbun seriously sounds like he should be announcing Springfield Isotope games on an episode of The Simpsons.

I think the games have already been divided up until 2012ish. I don’t think they can change who picks up the games. The best way is to keep calling Turner South. I am sure Rathburn proabably has a contract and he does a lot of Hawks and ACC basketball games. He isn’t bad when he isn’t openly pulling for a team.
Maybe some manager will add Torborg to their staff. But then Fox will bring in someone like Gant. I think Justice is a good color analyist. Hell, anyone is better than Torborg, except McCarver, Morgan. Torborg is tied with Pettorik, maybe a litt;e worse. Is Ernie Johnson Sr. dead yet? I would almost take him now…

Not sure how many of ya’ll are here from last night’s thread – the Frenchy v Roachy debate. Basically it broke down to people who said that Roach’s percieved laziness trumps Frenchys energetic style due to marginally better statistical production, which actually turns out to be relatively nonexistent. Well, in the ‘intangibles’ camp is now Mr Sabrmetric himself – Theo Epstein. Read the SI article on Big Papi and see how Papi’s ability in ‘clutch’ at bats has convinced Theo that there is a ‘human side to the game that cannot be measured by statistical analysis.’ Also – there is a pretty good discusion on ESPN.com on this subject between Timmy K and Rob Neyer. Good Stuff!

Torborg is better than Paciorek, in my opinion, but not by much. Torborg doesn’t have the emotional outbursts that make me want to break my TV. But they both add very little to a broadcast.
I think the real problem is that these guys completely dissassociate themselves from the organization. You knew the history of Pete, Don, etc, and knew that they cared for the fans. And that’s what the organization does, care for the fans. That’s one reason I’m such a fan. This faceless corporation in no way represents the ballclub.
I think that the other part of the problem is that Torborg (former Dodger, former Mets and Marlins manager) not only isn’t associated with the team but is associated with three teams that Braves fans have reasons to despise… and he won’t shut up about them. Honestly, last night when he started to talk about something that happened in 1965 again I had to mute the TV.

Daniel – FOX’s position when they assumed ownership of TSouth on mAy 1st, after long negotiations, was that the announcers should remain with their ‘parent companies’. ie Torburg and Rathburn on the FOX owned telecasts (which now include TSouth), and Don, Pete, Chip and Skip stay with the AOL/TW owned (TBS) broadcasts. I don’t know why they didn’t consider doing a timeshare arrangement, ie John MIller doing Giants broadcasts abd Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN. I can only assume they discussed and discarded this as a possibility. He then said that at the end of the season they would evaluate the announcer situation and determine if any changes need to be made. I asked if there is anyone else I could call to or what we could do to make the fans opinion loud and clear – he said that calling him was the correct thing to do. He was nice and very empathetic – I got the feeling that he was a TSouth employee prior to the sale. But the fact that we are talkingabout FOX is what makes me think we’d get farther asking the Braves to schedule more games for TBS – especially now that they have sold TSouth and no longer have any obligation to make Tsouth attractive to cable companies to expand TSouth’s viewership.
I think I mentioned this in an game thread a while back, but my guess is that TW won’t see the need for five broadcasters to do 70 or so games a year and will release some from their contracts after the season. My guess would be that next year the Fox/TS broadcasts will be handled by either Chip and Don or Chip and Joe.
During the past month, some of the commentary I’ve heard has been brutal. Rathburn, Torborg, Gant, McCarver, Joe Morgan, Hawk Harrelson, Tampa announcers..D-Backs announcers.. guys on Espn 2 doing World Cup..our local shmucks down here..
Were has all the good commentary gone..

Sorry that got to be so long….but I really feel that the only reason the Braves moved more games to TSouth was to make the station more attractive to Cable companies to expand the viewer base – and to make the station more attractive to be sold. Now that they have sold it, hopefully the Braves wont feel obligated to continue supplying games for TSouth. Does anyone know if a mininum number of Braves games per season was included in the terms of the sale?
…and there are 24 players on the team who can be a better leadoff hitter than Marcus, why does Marcus HAS TO leadoff?

Cairo bunted towards first, and Laroche fielded the ball, then had to break left towards the bag/Cairo. Cairo made a nice play, diving headfirst to the outside of the bad, and Laroche reached for him, but missed. I suppose diving to tag the runner was out of the question.
I meant to say this about last night’s disputed strike three/foul tip: LaRoche didn’t run to first, which for most players would indicate he thought he fouled the ball. But this is LaLollygagger we’re talking about.

A good baserunner, and pretty fast, but 0-2 as a basestealer last season, coming off being a .500 basestealer in the high minors, so you don’t want him running too much, another reason he won’t hit high in the order.

No more of the LaRoche-Frenchy debate…unless it forces each guy again to produce runs. Then it’s OK. We all know which side we are all on.
I think it’s important to back arguments with stats and that if some of us produce stats that others of us don’t like, it doesn’t mean we are wrong because our opinions differ.
Re: Giles as Leadoff.
I am curious…is this really going to be happening all year? Because I would really like the Braves to have a good leadoff hitter at some point to match our increasingly good starting pitching.
Re: Who should go to make room for Judy Reitsma? Answer – NOBODY!!! Judy Reitsma should be DFA’s.
However, the only pitcher I wouldn’t have a problem if he left is Chelsea Paronto. Chelsea sucks. I am not an Oscar fan but his last appearance, when Smoltz had to leave in the 2nd, gave me some hope. Paronto is Italian for “Gryboski”.

By the way, regarding the ‘booing’ thing…Braves fans have booed Judy Reitsma this year but wait until his ERA climbed over 7 and hell, even mock cheer when he gets someone out.
It’s not even COMPARABLE on any level how Yankee fans treat struggling players in their stands vs. Braves fans.
If Judy Reitsma had a 9.11 ERA for the Yankees, he would be tied up naked in Harlem with spray paint.
Brian J.

The fans sort of boo Jeter momentarily for not trying to throw Renteria out at third on that play, for those who can’t see the game.

One thing I think we can all agree on is Brian McCann’s value.
How many players (list them, please) would you folks be willing to trade McCann for, straight-up, taking contracts and budgetary constraints into account?
Davey…yes…we are doing a player debate every game now. I love this!
Stu…by leaps & bounds, Brian McCann is team MVP this year. And considering that I am not sold at all on Salty, Brian McCann is the one untradeable commodity on this club.
Brian J.

Again, from Beyond the Box Score:
“The debate has concluded – Jeff, hitch a lift to Richmond.”
Obviously, Mr. Beamer hasn’t been here. Even if he is right.

Stu

Good point, burdog5. If only #1 would get on base…
I wouldn’t trade McCann for Mauer; I still think Mauer’s too fragile. I would trade McCann for Tecmo Bowl Bo Jackson, Madden 2004 Michael Vick, and Cal Ripken Baseball Cal Ripken.
That’s the short list.

How much of our pitching woes do you attribute to the time that McCann spent on the DL? That was when things began to fall apart – when Pena and Pratt were handling the staff.
Mauer is better then McCann…that’s indisputable. But if Brian continues to be the mature, .300 hitter, good game calling player, I agree with the intangible of him being a lifelong Braves fan.
I would love to have him back there, productive the next 10 years.
Oh, and A’Rod’s “RBI” was sheer luck…if Smoltz lets that go to Giles, it’s a DP and A-Rod is naked and strung up in Harlem.

The great thing about Bobby is that he’ll only get pissed and act like that when he’s really got a reason to. If he’s giving the ump crap, nine times out of ten, he’s right. Plus it just really fires up the guys.
Otherwise, this game isn’t looking too bad. Decent pitching, decent run production. Not great, but definately passable. Baby steps.

Tecmo Bowl Bo Jackson is the best video gam player ever, followed by Ken Griffey Jr on SNES KEn Griffey baseball. In third place, Stu is right, LT was awesome on that game, not Bo, but great.
On Ryan Sanberg’s Super bases loaded there was a pitcher for Atlanta that was teh best player on the game. He threw like 103mph!
Stu
on June 28, 2006 at 1:55 pm
Madden ’04 Michael Vick was better than Griffey in the Griffey game, AAR is right about that. I never played Cal Ripken Jr. Baseball, so I can’t give an opinion on that.
I just did a quick Google search; in the Cal Ripken Jr. Baseball game, Cal is the only player listed (because they didn’t have an MLBPA license) and his stats for the previous year are listed as a .348 batting average and 51 home runs. Basically, in the game he’s a cross between Ernie Banks and Honus Wagner.
I have fond memories of Phil Niekro, in his Yankee years, on the old MLB baseball for Nintendo. (He was just a number, but he was Knucksie.) Those games are usually impossible to pitch in, but with Phil you could make that slooooooow pitch break five or six times.
Oh, and Randall Cunningham, Tecmo Super Bowl.
I played a lot of the Clemens game for Nintendo, too, and it was like the Ripken game, Roger the only named player. The others all had takeoffs of their names. I remember that Dave Justice was “Judge”.
Haha. He said “beat Wang”. Any joke you could possibly make with his name is funny.
Brian J.
on June 28, 2006 at 1:59 pm
True, nogbog. We haven’t spent nearly enough time whacking Wang. Why, as soon as we’ve got our Wang out, we put him away again. Only a couple of spurts of offense. We’re not getting no satisfaction.

JoeyT
on June 28, 2006 at 2:01 pm
IIRC if you play Glavine in the Griffey game, you can strike out any batter, including Griffey (world series), without any problem until his arm starts to get tired. Griffey isn’t even the best player in his own game. Glavine is.
If you start relievers and put Glavine in the second inning, you can do it every time and he wins 100 games.
(My fav SNES baseball is the one where the batters each have a special superpower that costs a certain number of points. That game kicks ass.)
Tecmo Bowl was the original game which had player but not team licenses, four plays per team, not all the teams, no kept stats. It was still the best game going. Tecmo Super Bowl is what we played in college — all teams, eight plays, editable playbooks, team and player licenses (the first football game with that, I think), kept stats and injuries.

“how to be the Braves bullpen: you should throw BB frequently”
There is a commercial for “mobile ESPN” that plays somewhat often in which Peter Gammons is watching a game on the phone. On the top left and right of the phone you can see the Braves and National’s respective logos, meaning he is watching a Braves-Nationals game. During the commercial Gammons says “can this guy ever throw a strike” and screams “throw the ball over the plate” later in the commercial.
Every time Gammons does that, I think he must be watching McCay McBride pitching.
Frenchy – solid single of Mariano
Adam – Called 3rd strike

That reminds me of the time in 1965 when I went to complain to Walter Alston about Don Drysdale spraying me with a water hose. Walter kicked me in the knee and threw me out of his office!
My rotation is fairly weak outside the top 3 guys (Pedro, Danny Haren, Liriano). My lineup is strong but I would consider changing out either my 3B (Melvin Mora) or an OF (Abreu, JD Drew, Jermaine Dye).
My inclination at this point is to ask for either two pitchers ( of the Buehrle/Kazmir/Burnett trio) or one pitcher and either Guerrero or Belrtan, but I keep waffling.
Any thoughts?
Oh, and the player I am inclined to trade is Hamels, despite his extra year of keeper eligibility, because of durability concerns and his lack of a quality third pitch. I will not trade Liriano under any circumstances.
I’d take Buehrle and Kazmir or Kazmir and Guerrero.
Thanks for the advice.
New poll!
What’s the most embarrassing?
Has anyone looked at A-Rod’s home/road splits? He’s dramatically better on the road. It makes me think that all the booing is having an effect on him. Stupid Yankee fans. Like he’s doing it on purpose. I feel a little bad for the guy. But not that bad. He’s making $25 million, after all.
Yeah, it’s hard to pity someone making $25 million a year, but I know what you’re saying, jenny. I don’t think A-Rod gets the fairest of shakes, but I know I’m likely in the minority on that one.
— Bravesfan1

Looks like Smoltz has put those rumors to rest.
That’s good to hear. I love John Smoltz, and I don’t care who knows it!
Stu has a man-crush…I think there are probably more of us in that same boat, though….
Yeah, my wife’s cool with it, so it’s all good.
Line-up
Giles

Frenchy

Betemit DH
Langy
That’s one of the problems with the Liberty Media acquisition. This is a company that runs cheapo channels like QVC, GSN, and Encore, and has absolutely no investment in Atlanta. Time-Warner is faceless, but Liberty will be faceless and chintzy.
That’s when I feel fortunate that I am watching the game through YES rather than FOX.
I’m happy to be listening to Pete and Don now..
Where*
…and I can’t stand Chip Carey either…
…and there are 24 players on the team who can be a better leadoff hitter than Marcus, why does Marcus HAS TO leadoff?
I’ll be devastated if Skip and Joe are broken up. Please let it be Chip and Don that get moved, even though that might make the Fox/TS broadcasts dangerously close to unwatchable.
Well, Giles demonstrates what has made him what he is this season- a lead weight on a team that’s already loaded down enough.
I just hope John can stay healthy…
If I were the Yankees, I would have laid down a bunt early and forced Smoltzie to test that groin. I am glad they don’t think like me.
Chip on the radio has just informed us that ARod, Giambi, Sheffield, Damon, Mussina, and Johnson are not core members of the Yankee team, because only players developed in the organization are members of the core.
Pete Orr must be a core member of the Braves.
Tennessee, the Yanks don’t have many players who lay down bunts. That is a nasty thought, though; we’ll see what the bottom of their order does.
You’re not with me 25 million dollar player that gets boo’ed in his home park…
Wow, the Braves are returning to their core business of developing Cy Young winners again…
Hack n’ whack!
Just wondering aloud: does TP actually do anything? I mean, besides eat.
I think Don has a two year deal and I know Pete isn’t an employe of TW, he works directly for the Braves. I think Skip is going to step dwon after next season. Chip use to work for Fox. If I had three guesses this is what FOX will do.
Rathburn and Joe
CHip and Joe
Rathburn and Torborg (or someother gimp)
I could see Joe going somewhere else. He is one of the best color guys in the buisness, but I would think he would stay in Atlanta.
Smoltz doesn’t seem to be having any problems so far aside from that double in the first. In fact, he just struck out Williams on three straight.
Jeremy,
I hear TP is a good card player, knows good places to eat in some cities, and long walks on the beach. Other than that, no he doesn’t do anything. I am convinced the Julio Franco was the old batting coach.
John’s sliders are looking very good today.
Dive at him, Cockroach!
Laroche sucks so bad.
Lovely Adam. He is such a great first baseman.
Well, Tennessee, they listened to you, but Cairo’s bunt play didn’t involve Smoltz.
There’s that bunt we were wondering about
What a fantastic defensive first baseman.
Too bad LaRoche can’t make a play..
Yeah, luckily for Smoltz he didn’t have to dig for it. Unluckily for us, Laroche did.
I’m “watching” on GameDay. Would someone be kind enough to describe Adam’s failure?
Well, they are actually very smart in testing Adam instead of Smoltzie.
LaRoche picked up the ball and ran toward first, but Cairo dived outisde the 1B line to dodge him and got the base with his left hand.
According to radio, he tried to tag and Cairo slid under it.
Joe Torre was one of the best hitting catchers of all time. Why is it that he can’t, for the life of him, get a decent backup catcher on that team? I guess Stinnett is better than Girardi. I guess.
Should LaRoche have made the play, Brian J.?
Cairo bunted towards first, and Laroche fielded the ball, then had to break left towards the bag/Cairo. Cairo made a nice play, diving headfirst to the outside of the bad, and Laroche reached for him, but missed. I suppose diving to tag the runner was out of the question.
Well..Cairo lays down a bunt…Adam fields it…Cairo dives for the bag, and Adam as come to be expected fails to make a tag..
A play that probably 29 other starting first baseman in the leaugue make
Adding to what Brian said, Adam was trying to tag Cairo, but Cairo slided under Adam’s glove, who was too lazy to dive tag.
The Yanks have some darn good scouts then if they knew how much Adam lolligagged around.
I meant to say this about last night’s disputed strike three/foul tip: LaRoche didn’t run to first, which for most players would indicate he thought he fouled the ball. But this is LaLollygagger we’re talking about.
You don’t need scouts to know that LaRoche lolligags.
My grandmother knows that..and she doesn’t have vision in her left eye
That’s true, Mac, but since that Nick Johnson incident, I do think Adam has made a lot of effort to hustle things out. I just can’t see him doing something like that after all the flack he caught for that Nationals game, if he wasn’t sure that he fouled the ball. But maybe I give him too much credit.
Huckleberry has struckout with Frenchy on and missed a tag on a guy running to first so far this game. I watched the missed tag and he really didn’t try very hard. Typical Huckleberry. I love how he keeps proving me right.
Thanks so much Ryan, I am so sicked of those infield choppers.
Doesn’t Langerhans have any speed?
He’s 0-for-2 in SB.
What is wrong with Giles?
Langerhans is an awful basestealer, always has been. What I wrote in the player analysis this offseason:
I’d guess that he gets terrible jumps.
Will Bobby ever going to take Marcus out of the leadoff spot?
I think announcers are entertainers, some better some worse, but to me torborg tries to impress you with his knowledge. I just personally find him ANNOYING kind of Joe Morgan annoying
What’s right with Giles?
Jeff, Marcus was perfectly right batting second in the lineup.
I think it’s time for a backlash against the backlash against the backlash against Jeter.
How many think Giles will be a Brave next year?
Kc, been asking that question since May.
Atlanta or Richmond? Seriously, I think it’s fairly likely- we’ll try to trade him but his value is pretty limited.
Renteria’s defense has been much improved as of late.
Ok, back from meetings and a few quick comments.
And Gryboski is Russian for “Paronto”
I will pretend Reali is making us play the % game on PTI:
“There is a 3% chance Marcus Giles will be a Brave next year.”
I’d rather see Yates get axed. Yates is old Anglo-Saxon for Gryboski.
That doesn’t really answer the question, though. Marcus has batted 2d only a handful of times this year. Clearly he’s not suited to lead off. And, no, I don’t think he’ll be a Brave next year. NL West would be my guess.
Over, Alex.
Nice hit, Renteria.
Grybo never threw 97.
Seriously, I’d like to see both Paronto and Yates go, but if we’re only tossing one, I’m choosing Chad.
OMGosh….a leadoff man falling behind in the count, yet working it even and then lacing a double the other way??? DEAR LORD, WHAT IS THIS??? Wait, are you telling me that Edgar Renteria can hit leadoff??
Think JS would work a deal with ‘the Fathers’ to let the brothers play together?
And Mac, I have WHIPLASH from your Post!
The fans sort of boo Jeter momentarily for not trying to throw Renteria out at third on that play, for those who can’t see the game.
Thank you Druw…
There we go! On the Board! Way to go Andruw!!!!!
Andruw!!!
Stu…on one issue (finally!) we wholeheartedly agree…Chelsea has to go.
I actually think Yates has had some good appearances and while I don’t consider him a top 4 guy in this mediocre current bullpen, to me Tyra Yates has a heckuva lot more game then Chelsea Paronto.
But the difference in the Braves and Yankees, Alex, is the Yankees don’t keep guys with 9.11 era’s. We make them our closer.
Oh by the way, I took Chipper’s side before the game, but Andruw leads Chipper today, 1-0 (if we are keeping score).
Seriously…lets make this a regular game and have 2 offensive Braves square off each time! its fun!
What’s wrong with the Frenchy-Roachey debate? It keeps us from focusing on the office drone before the daily game thread opens up. And, of course, everyone is entitled to their opinions, some are just just better than others.
Brad, Amen.
Yeah, I gave all my reasons on the last thread, if you’re interested.
We’ve agreed on more than that, Alex. We both like the Skip/Joe broadcast team. We both want the Braves to win. We’re both against genocide.
I thought (again, radio) that they were booing ARod for not getting to third in time for Jeter to throw.
Well, at least the pitch was down the middle that jeff hit.
I think you’re right- they didn’t show what was or wasn’t happening at third base. “The camera” just loves Jeter, even if the camera isn’t showing us what we need to know.
The debates seem to be working.
Frenchy and Huck combined for 3 rbi’s yesterday…while Andruw starts things off today.
We make this a daily thing
The Braves are certainly helping Jeter to be in the center of all action!
Stu,
That post actually deserves this – 🙂
YES…Skip & Joe is the best Braves announcing team, amen to that!!!
I am hopeful everyone in this room would be against genocide.
Like I said, Davey, we maybe onto something so sure…let’s match 2 different hitters each game.
How about Giles vs. Edgar tomorrow?
errr…I mean FRIDAY, since tomorrow is a travel day.
Ha!
I was just gonig to say Alex.. Giles vs Edgar tomorrow.
But, that one may be too one sided
Yeesh, no debate there. How about Giles v. Chelsea?
Not tomorrow…next game. I’m not thinking straight
Stu, we’re in fundamental agreement on what the Braves’ problems and solutions are. It’s all a matter of degree. You may think Frenchy’s gonna be a great player; I think he’s not there yet and might never be. You may think Chipper’s the better player; I’m pretty sure Andruw’s better when defense is considered. You may think our bullpen need to be shot; I prefer drawing and quartering. But we agree more than we disagree.
Davey, I love Marcus. I would prefer the Braves to trade Edgar instead of Marcus.
I won’t ba able to participate in the Giles edgar debate – I’ll be at the game. I have a ticket for Saturday, too. So go ahead now and put me down for Edgar on Friday and when we decide who we are debating Saturday, I’ll put my 2 cents in.
Dunno Davey, Huckleberry has been sucking today. Maybe we need to up the intensity of our debate?
Radio update: Chip and Joe are now talking about the Yankees possibly helping the Braves by beating the Mets. Sigh.
Well kc…it depends how you look at it
If we’re debating who’s having a better year, Edgar wins like the White Sox vs Houston..
But if we’re talking trade like you mentioned..then it’ll be a bit more evenly matched i guess..
I vote for Tar and Feathers over shooting and draw-and-quartering. It’s more visually entertaining and our bullpen has been awfully fowl this year.
nice job, Chipper
Sorry… I couldn’t help myself….
Beggars can’t be choosers, Mac. We need someone to beat the Mets that won’t threaten us. The Yanks aren’t my first choice, but better them winning than the Mets.
The day will soon come when we won’t have to care again.
Davey, Edgar is hurting the pitching staff on defense that can not be meassured. When I actually want to see Tony Pena playing at shortstop instead, that’s not a good indication.
The first inning was worrisome but Smoltz has settled in and his pitch count is under control, hopefully, to have him go 8.
I enjoyed it tggr
I’m with you on Andruw. And on Frenchy, though I’m very hopeful that he’ll be great one day. But that just makes your point stronger.
One thing I’m on which not in agreement with anyone here, my previous sentence not withstanding, is the nickname “Frenchy.” I can’t stand it. Chipper coined “Smurph” (Small Murphy) a couple of weeks after Francoeur’s arrival last year, and I loved it, but it never caught on. I’ve used it from time to time on here, but that’s done little to increase its popularity.
At this time, I’d like to formally announce the candidacy of “Smurph” for Jeff Francoeur’s nickname. I will launch a smear campaign against the incumbent if necessary.
Let’s tar and feather, then draw and quarter. A couple more good games and I’ll settle for running them out of town on a rail.
It’s funny to see Chipper having a mount conference with Smoltz…I wonder what they talked about…
I reserve the right to call him Smurf when he fails, but OK, Stu.
The “I’m” should obviously come after the “on which” in that sentence. I went to Vanderbilt!
So did Skip Bayless.
Don’t do that to me, Mac. *Tears up.*
Sorry Stu – Frenchy is too natural for the last name Francoeur. good luck with your smear campaign, though. Smurph takes too muck explanation. Did anyone else listen to Johnny Miller and Joe Morgan trying to get the correct explanation for Pronk – 2 weeks ago when the Tribe and WhiteSox played on Sunday night twice in three weeks? They may know a little abotu baseball, but they are absolutely CLUELESS about anything else……
Let me pay Roachy a compliment.
Nobody grounds out with as much force as Adam LaRoche!
Too much explanation?
Small Murphy.
Chip and Smoltz were probably debating Frenchy vs LaRoche..
Smoltz cracked an ADD joke…Chip called him Huck, a good time was had by all..
Stu, the problem is that most of us have a mental picture of a Smurf. It takes a little longer to think of a Small Murph.
LaRoche isn’t doing much today to make my arguments look good.
Ridiculously easy inning for Wang.
Fortunately, the statistics are still with you, Brian. 🙂
Too much explanation in that there is not an obvious connection to people who aren’t heavily involved. Frenchy is a logical nickname, obvious to nearly anyone. Too much explanation refers more to having to explain it to someone every time it is used.
I just thought of a debate where I would SIDE with LaRoche:
A debate comparing his merits to Judy Reitsma!
Yeah, I know what you mean. I’m just grasping for straws. To me, a nickname’s cool-factor is much more important than the ease with which it can be explained.
Wang CM (王建民) allowed one run but I think his 2seam fastball looks good.
That’s not saying much Alex…
If the Braves win, I feel like we should all “Wang Chung” Tonight.
Sorry…I admit that was cheesy, easy and bad, but someone had to make a Wang Chung joke.
Well, we’ve got a habit of making any opposing pitcher look good. Fortunately, Smoltz is looking just as good, but we’re probably only going to get seven inniings out of him today with that pitch count.
Davey,
Whoops…let me add Chelsea Paronto. I would take LaRoche’s side over his too.
Huckleberry continues to champion my argument for me. At least that’s something I can be cheer him for.
Alex, that was worse than my ‘fowl’ comment above….
tggr…I agree it was really bad…I just couldn’t help myself.
Giles is the only guy Wang has struck out.
Marcus now 0-3, 2K’s and a double play.
That’s almost as bad as you can do it 3 at bats
ah well..it’s not like lead-off hitters are supposed to get on base or anything
Piece on the Braves’ troubles over the last month …
http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/story/2006/6/27/15115/9934#readmore
Come on Atlanta
Good to see Chip laughing out there 🙂
Stinnett probably made a Huckleberry joke…
john, Davey, et all-
Remember…Bobby doesn’t read, you know, stats…boxscores…it is all about managing with your gut–yeah! 🙁
From the Beyond the Box Score article:
“Note: the Braves bullpen is actually scooting along quite nicely at the moment with 1 ER over the last 15 innings. Expect normal business to resume shortly.”
We’ll do the snark, thank you very much.
Radio update: Chip is now telling us that Big Tony (now the Yankees’ first base coach) says that L’il Tony will hit on the major league level.
Well of course Big Tony’s going to say that. Big Tony’s team is competing against us. Little Tony is the new Rafael Belliard- if he gets 100 ABs in a season, that’s too much.
WAY TO GO MCCANN!!!!!!
McCann!!!
Nice hustle by chipper to advance to third on Andruw’s hit. There’s a play where we can congratulate both of them.
And way to be, McCann!
Wahoooo!
McCann!
He was so due.
Now, another 2-out rbi chance for Francoeur (I don’t like either of the nicknames.).
Yes, Mac, we know dads our never biased.
Just ask Jim Harrick & John Schuerholz about ‘nepotism’.
But I love Lil’ Tony’s defense!
oh…and yeah Braves!
Good thing we have Jeff with all those 2-out RBI. Umm-hmm.
One thing I think we can all agree on is Brian McCann’s value.
How many players (list them, please) would you folks be willing to trade McCann for, straight-up, taking contracts and budgetary constraints into account?
Andruw with a rbi…Chip with a run scored..
They’re both doing well.. 😀
Typical Francoeur 🙂
That’s because it’s not close-and-late, Brian, the only part of the game that’s relevant in a statistical inquiry.
Davey…yes…we are doing a player debate every game now. I love this!
Stu…by leaps & bounds, Brian McCann is team MVP this year. And considering that I am not sold at all on Salty, Brian McCann is the one untradeable commodity on this club.
Again, from Beyond the Box Score:
“The debate has concluded – Jeff, hitch a lift to Richmond.”
Obviously, Mr. Beamer hasn’t been here. Even if he is right.
Keep digging that hole deeper.
Atleast Jeffrey’s swing is looking better than Spazzy McGee over at first.. (sorry…needed to defend Jeff again)
Stu…only cathcer I’d rather have than McCann is Mauer..but i don’t know how much Joe makes..
At least Frenchy has a hit today, more than I can say for Huckleberry.
3,4,5 batters way to go
The only player I could thik about trading McCann for is Joe Mauer. But Joe was not raised a Braves fan…and that INTANGIBLE means that I wouldn’t pull the trigger on that trade.
Good point, burdog5. If only #1 would get on base…
Come on Smoltzie — hold it together ….
I wouldn’t trade McCann for Mauer; I still think Mauer’s too fragile. I would trade McCann for Tecmo Bowl Bo Jackson, Madden 2004 Michael Vick, and Cal Ripken Baseball Cal Ripken.
That’s the short list.
What about Tecmo Bowl Lawrence Taylor? He gets overlooked, but he was the defensive Bo Jackson of that game. Just a remarkable player.
I hate Giambi.
How much of our pitching woes do you attribute to the time that McCann spent on the DL? That was when things began to fall apart – when Pena and Pratt were handling the staff.
Is Giambi juicing again?
Here’s A-Rod’s moment…
If we can induce Mr. A-Rod to a DP here, the Yankee fans may lynch the man.
No way, that’s such a strike.
Mauer is better then McCann…that’s indisputable. But if Brian continues to be the mature, .300 hitter, good game calling player, I agree with the intangible of him being a lifelong Braves fan.
I would love to have him back there, productive the next 10 years.
Oh, and A’Rod’s “RBI” was sheer luck…if Smoltz lets that go to Giles, it’s a DP and A-Rod is naked and strung up in Harlem.
bobby is about to get tossed
Screwed on the third strike call to A-rod and it cost us a run.
At least we escaped the inning with the lead.
oooohhh…1st pitch swinging with runners in scoring position? Hmmmm…what team has that reminded me of…can’t quite put my finger on it.
Bizarro Baseball…the Yankees are becoming the May-June 2006 Braves (hopefully!).
Actually Alex, if Smoltz didn’t touch the ball, that will go straight to Andruw…
radio says that ball would’ve goneup the middle.
Baby steps.
Way to go Adam.
KC, I’m pretty sure Giles would have stopped that one, and then they’d be selling ARod for parts in the South Bronx.
Yeah, I don’t think Giles would’ve got to it. That ball was hit pretty hard.
a nice handling of a crisis, Smoltz!!!!!!!!!!!
Josh~~
I Log off now. I guess it is incompatible and doesn’t work. I can’t type words correctly. You can directly transfer it to my cell phone or via another email account. I can handle it. Thanks in advance 😉
Madden ’04 Michael Vick was better than Griffey in the Griffey game, AAR is right about that. I never played Cal Ripken Jr. Baseball, so I can’t give an opinion on that.
The year Mac and I met was my freshman year of College back in 1993-1994, and I remember Mac and I played a ton of Tecmo Bowl. Good times.
Nothing like Ernest Byner!
The bottom third of our order has been completely worthless today.
We’re not making Wang work enough. Figures these Braves don’t even
know how to beat wang.
-n
Well said, nogbogfrog. I’m glad I don’t have that problem. But then, my Chien-Ming Wang is a lot bigger than the Yankees’.
Haha. He said “beat Wang”. Any joke you could possibly make with his name is funny.
True, nogbog. We haven’t spent nearly enough time whacking Wang. Why, as soon as we’ve got our Wang out, we put him away again. Only a couple of spurts of offense. We’re not getting no satisfaction.
Has it really come to this?
That was very un-Andruw.
That was awful.
Speaking of unsatisfying, why didn’t Andruw catch that one or at least come up with it cleanly?
Mac…was it Tecmo Bowl or Tecmo Super Bowl–was there a difference?
Gosh how different the graphics were 13 years ago.
…….
Ok, that does NOT look like the Andruw Jones center field stopped I remember.
Oh…and can we stop pitching to effing Giambi? I am sick of this guy already.
Imagine the jokes if he and Bong were on the same team.
I can’t believe my eyes…
If Smoltz can escape this inning still with the lead…another baby step towards confidence boosting.
That game kicks ass.)
no! Andruw!
Oh Great…ESPN is showing more W.S. LOW lights.
I hate ESPN.
Not Andruw’s finest play in Center there. Hope it doesn’t cost us much.
Oh yeah, Baseball Simulator 1.000 for the Super Nintendo. I loved the missile power. Just barely tap the ball and you’ve got three guys fielding it, flying very slowly toward the wall…
You can do it Smoltzy.
EDGAR!
YES! Renteria!
EDGAR!!!!!!
RENTERIA!
Just one more out!
EDGAR!!!
Web Gem for Edgar!
and his defense is a liability because why?….I forget.
Edger!
wow
Renteria’s defense continues to improve.
Great infield positioning.
Describe the play!
Hey what just happened? I am looking in over gameday, how did he hold him at third?
i meant ar
I tell ya – most of us are still spoiled by Furcals range. Edgar is not nearly as bad as many of us make him out to be. He was an All Star SS in the NL only 2 years ago.
Line drive just to Renteria’s left, he made a diving catch.
Smoltz just walked Damon. No need for more drama here.
Mac,
I remember.
For some reason, I remember using Ernest Byner a lot for Touchdowns.
Uh, Pete, that was Miguel Cabrera from the Marlins.
Wasn’t that Miguel Cabera against Baltimore?
Dude… theres a difference between Melky Cabrera and Miguel Cabrera…..Pete just mistook one for the other.
Wait, Melky Cabrera knocked in a run on an attempted intentional walk? I want to see a replay of that.
Wasn’t it MIGUEL Cabrera who hit the pitch-out the other night? I think Pete just said it was Melky.
tggrschult, Edgar’s main problem is fielding grounders to his right. He doesn’t have the arm strength to throw the runners out at first.
Oh, that was Miguel? That makes more sense. I still want to see it. I’ll check youtube.
YES!
Joey, look for Miguel Cabrera for that highlight.
Strike three! Way to be, John!
I haven’t actually seen that hit by Cabrera.
Gutty, gutty 7th inning by Smolztie. That’s gotta get everyone’s fist pumping in the air. Yes!
Great job Smoltzie!!! This has to be his last inning though…
Hells yeah. Way to get out of a jam.
Looked like Smoltzie knew what he was doing walking Damon. Cabrera just looked foolish.
Can’t believe Smoltz got out of that.
I hope Chip Carey’s sensational comments don’t jinx us, though.
I’m getting no work done.
I love John Smoltz.
First pitch groundout. Giles is consistent, whatever else you can say about him. And it has to be said, it’s unprintable.
That felt like a turning point inning.
the balls on this guy
I am stunned…Marcus first pitching swinging ground out?
I am sick of his game right now. And I am even more sick of him leading off…though not much better in the at bat by Edgar. (Boston flashbacks?)
Seriously, after that gutty Smoltz inning, you’d think the Braves could work the count and get the man another run this inning. Beyond frustrating.
So, uh…in the spirit of the World Cup ‘Man of the Match’… who has been the Man of the Match for this game? Edgar? Smoltz? McCann? Any other nominations? (Of course – subject to change with 2 full innings remaining.)
that was a wang bang play
Do you think Leo is teacing the IBB?
I’m going to predict that Derek Jeter will be the “Man of the Match.”
It’s just Smoltzie being Smoltzie!!!
tggr,
In the spirit of FOX we should give the player of the game in the third inning.
Well, that’s surely an optimistic view there, Stu….(!)
Smoltz is Man of the Match. No doubt about it.
Stu,
I admit I am really having a hard time getting work done with a TV at my desk and the fact that the place I work for gets 30 channels here and one of them is ESPN.
Smitty- this is a TBS game, not Tsouth. Thats why we wait until the 8th.
I guess we want to keep Wang in the game. We hardly made him throw any pitches in the 8th. We hit the ball hard off of him, though – with nothing to show for it.
I’d think, given our recent play, it’s a realistic view. I hope I’m wrong, of course.
Looks like it’s gonna be Death Ray against Jeter, Giambi & A-Clod.
Smoltz is looking very good. Especially considering what went down in Tampa. I hope this doesn’t make him look too attractive to the scouts.
Key Ray takes over.
Wow, you guys have assess to cable channels during work?!
Chipper to Ray: “Try not to think about how much more than you these guys make, and you’ll be fine.”
I would have to vote for Smoltz right now – although if the score holds up, a great case could be made for Edgar with that run saving catch. Edgar certainly made the Play of the Game, even if he’s not the Man of the Match.
I can just feel the bullpen meltdown coming.
kc,
It helps…I work for a TV & Radio station here in the DC area and I have been good enough at my job for long enough that I got permission for this…but I really only turn it on when the Braves have a day game on ESPN and during March Madness. That’s about it!
thanks dan
Ah, the K Ray gets the first out — and it’s Sweet Boy Jeter.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………
Ugh, Poor Smoltz
I hate that guy.
Groan. Ken Ray is definitely in the Atlanta bullpen. And Giambi is still a sack of steroids.
Effing Bullpen, effing Death Ray, effing Cox for taking Smoltz out and effing Braves for even pitching to Giambi.
If we lose this game….
SH**!
Thanks Dan….and I HATE GIAMBI.
crap
F me!!!!
You can’t blame Cox for taking Smoltz out. His pitch count was over 100, and he was already nursing an injury. And he’s 39 years old.
Rivera is warming up too
You mean we’re going to have to score more than two runs to win this game?
And Smoltz is robbed of another victory.
Smoltz had already thrown 110 pitches; he had to come out. As for Ray, honestly, who else would we use?
Nobody is blaming Bobby.
I would have underhand tossed it to ARod. He would have blown it
We all hate Giambi. I think we can all agree on that.
Alex did.
looks like we are going to need to use someone else anyway. Ray is melting down right now.
We’re never going to win two in a row again.
If chad paronto gets in this game, i will never watch another braves game again.
i’m not even kidding.
Bobby should have gone to Bedrock there, oh wait.
Why is Paranto warming up?
One thing I agree with Alex, why did we even pitch to Giambi?
Maybe we can get Huckleberry’s dad to teach our bullpen the “LaRoche LaLob” It gave Gorman Thomas absolute fits in ’82.
Seriously? Paronto? Good grief. Now THAT would be a terrible move by Bobby.
brad, I guess you will have plenty of spare time in the coming months…
Great, fat ass Chad is warming up
The YES guys said that 6 potential wins for Smoltz this year that the bullpen has blown. Yikes.
Over 100 pitches, fine…I can understand. It’s more about spewing anger at the ‘pen. No in this case, it’s not like he brought out Paronto or Reitsma…it’s Ray and we have to try & expect more from him.
Maybe if our offense (GILES) could not swing at the first pitch, we could have manfactured a run last inning.
You think we know, Smitty? The existence of Chelsea Paronto defies all rules of logic.
In a weird way, I hope it happens. My blood pressure needs a break
We don’t need old man LaRoche to teach it. Torborg and Rathburn talk about it 75 times a game. I am sure they could teach it.
Oh guys, did you know Adam’s dad was a big league pitcher?!?!
Assholes
Death Ray is melting down. Yankees score here and it’s over.
Here we go folks…
TAKE HIM OUT ALREADY!
Nice job Adam, your talk with Ray certainly helps.
What is Giles supposed to contribute to this conference? At least it’s McBride comingg in.
Here is your spare time Brad.
Or is it Macey? Maybe I am wrong. Hold on Brad.
haha, I’m not sure it even matters
Joe just said Paranto was in. That can’t be right.
If karma smiles upon us today, it will grant us a 6-4-3 right about now.
Maybe we are saving McBride for axtra innings and Sosa for the save.
Or we have already given up.
well guys, have fun. I can’t take it anymore.
Ok, Stu…I agreed with you…I was wrong in blaming Bobby for taking Smoltz out if he was over 100 pitches. I admit!!!
However…Paronto bad. Pitching to Giambi. Bad.
We can all agree on those things.
Giambi must be juicing again.
ok Brad, you can take this summer off now.
PARONTO??? ARE YOU KIDDING ME???!!>??!?!
I can’t believe I have wasted my whole afternoon for THIS.
Nope, I’m wrong. It’s Chelsea. My eyes need checking, kinda like Cox’s head.
Thank you JS. Thank you for ruining our summer.
time for that 2-2 double on a hanging sinker
Is Joe Torre managing the Braves again? Paronto?!
Wow!
WOW. Paronto with the K.
Paronto gets a strikeout! Stop the presses!
Chelsea Paronto strikes him out.
Only one more. Got my fingers crossed.
how to be the Braves bullpen: you should throw BB frequently
Paronto with a “called” strikeout? I have seen it all.
The temparature must be high in NYC. Bobby is out of his mind…wait, Paronto got an out!!!
Lucky Strike….one more and we can put away the razor blades and cliff jumping gear.
Holy cow. That is all.
Ok the American League is great this year.
If Chelsea gets another out here, you all know what this means:
He’s in our bullpen until September, at least.
we will pitch to puljois too
SHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! Boy that was close
Now it is time for the 2-2 double on a fastball over the plate
The yankees Gold Glove ballboy – maybe we could trade for him?
That sign makes me wish I had downed a bottle of Stoli during the first seven innings. I don’t want to remember this.
ANOTHER STRIKE OUT!
YES!
OH MY GOD! PARANTO!
Whew. We won’t lose this until the ninth.
Did I just see that?
Holy strikeout, Batman!
Two straight strikeouts from Paronto. Watch the skies for flying pigs.
THAT’S MAGIC!!!
Wow. Does brad get to watch again?
wow… we are using all of our luck today. Maybe there’s a little bit left for the offense. Just one run…thats all…
Wow. Did that just happen? Paronto?!
Brian,
Pigs spotted over Chattanooga!
Paronto just bought himself another 2 weeks, Reitsma will replace Barry I guess
Let’s face it, that was some stuff. If you come into the game when your pen has that sort of rep, that’s something. If you do it in Yankee Stadium in the clutch, that’s really something.
Barry or Yates
I guess we should have had Paronto start the inning.
Ok Rivera is in. If we win it will be in extra’s
A least we get to play with all 3 outs this inning. Marcus isn’t leading off this inning.
Paronto. Rivera. The match up America has craved. Forget October, it feels like a World Series match up in June!
(ok…at least on the Rivera part 🙂
i’m still here. i just can’t comprehend how a team can go into yankee stadium for a series trying to get back on track and use guys like pete orr, todd pratt and paronto in meaningful roles.
i just can’t fathom that.
No way guys, I’m pulling for a run this inning. Edgar is the only guy who has really faced Rivera to potentially be affected. The other guys may not be afraid of him at all.
C’mon MCCANN!!!!!!!
You hit one off of Roger last September…you can do it off Mariano today!
My boy Francoure! Let’s see what he can do
That was still a hell of an at-bat by McCann
“how to be the Braves bullpen: you should throw BB frequently”
There is a commercial for “mobile ESPN” that plays somewhat often in which Peter Gammons is watching a game on the phone. On the top left and right of the phone you can see the Braves and National’s respective logos, meaning he is watching a Braves-Nationals game. During the commercial Gammons says “can this guy ever throw a strike” and screams “throw the ball over the plate” later in the commercial.
Every time Gammons does that, I think he must be watching McCay McBride pitching.
Nice hit, Frenchy Smurph.
Let’s see Adam do that…
Ok, Adam, makes me look stupid.
See My boy can hit. We scouted Rivera the other day. I am doing my part
It’s time for Bay-ta-meat.
LaRoche just makes it harder and harder to support him, I swear…
Ugh.
Swing, dumbass.
Perfect Adam. Completely hopeless.
I hate being RIGHT.
Frenchy – solid single of Mariano
Adam – Called 3rd strike
Oh, and then there’s the stats.
But no, we Frenchy over LaRoche arguers are wrong.
Rivera loves to pitch to Laroche
Yeah, Brian. Today, he certainly does. Of course, I never said he would continue to be more productive than Francoeur, only that he has been thus far this season.
let me amend that–we use orr, pratt, paronto, and LAROCHE in meaningful roles.
Sosa will blow this. He’ll walk a guy, and that runner will score.
It’s alot easier to get that K when the batter is asleep.
You’d rather have Thorman in there?
Yes, I would rather have Thorman in there. At least there is hope. Adam is completely hopeless.
By the way, my new nickname for Adam is ‘Corky’, you know, like Corky from “Life Goes On”.
Corky LaRoche.
No, and not to stir up another discussion, but I would rather my GM find a real 1B, someone who can hit over .240 and someone who doesn’t have to platoon with BRIAN JORDAN.
But that’s just me.
Rivera makes a lot of hitters look hopeless.
Wow.
2 out RBI’s are much better then a crap load of base hits and being left on base.
Wow, that was hit hard
Ouch. I thought the game was over.
When did Cox have enough brain cells die for a second inning of Paronto to seem like a good idea?
Paronto another inning? I just had a minor heart attack.
Guesses on how this game will end?
Two innings might be pressing it . . . but anyone else is likely to be worse.
Ok, pudgy almost got tatooed by Posada.
Get the bullpen warmed up.
Actually, Brad, our brilliant GM thought Reitsma would be an awesome closer, Adam would be another John Olerud, and HoRam would be another Glavine…wait, at least he has gotten HoRam right up to now!!!
I thought they showed Sosa up before the break. I guess not.
Villareal and McBride warming up
Another k?
Another Paronto strike-out?
holy strikeout (again), Batman!
Pudgy, wow?
Am I dreaming?
Villareal and McBride in the pen. Paronto K’s Posada. we’ll see how it goes….
we need to get out of this and score 10 runs, quick!
Wow, Paronto is out of his mind!
Yeah, and I guess he’s too stubborn to realize that after 80-something games, he was COMPLETELY WRONG on every prediction he made.
“Adam would be another John Olerud”
I think someone (be it Schuerholz, Cox or the AJC) was comparing LaRoche before the 2004 season to Palmerio.
This cannot last with Paronto.
Yeah Brad, the old man is so stubborn and slow that he is still solving the problems that he should have fixed during the off-season.
Time for Mikly Cabera to win the game
I like the strategy of walking Melky Cabrera to get to Derek Jeter.
Well Capt. Clutch is up
a walk…here we go
We’re screwed.
JUST ONE MORE OUT!
IS THAT SO HARD!?
Palmerio?! Who was that? Terence Moore?
TIme for a soft single
Time for Mr. Clutch to not live up to his reputation yet again.
I would walk Jeter too! Gulp!
How about walking Jeter and Giambi so that we can pitch to ARod?
Walking Jeter? For an enormous home run hitter? Jesus.
Great strategy. Let’s walk Jeter to get to the guy who has KILLED us all series. I don’t care who pitches to him.
I would take my chance on ARod…WHY ARE WE EVEN BOTHER TO PITCH TO THE STEROID BOY?
Wow. McBride vs. Giambi. This should serve as a nice summary of our season.
thanks your info, Dan!
“What a smart play by Cabrera!”
funny stuff, JoeyT!
I’d pitch to A-Rod Too!
WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING INTENTIONALLY WALKING JETER TO GET TO GIAMBI???
yikes! As if Giambi hasn’t done enough damage to us already. he is responsible for 7 of the 8 runs the Yankees have put on the board this series.
McBride in to walk-in the winning run.
Perhaps Bobby has a flight to catch and he wants to end the game asap.
I’m surprised all of you are still watching this game.
WHEW…..
That worked out. Don’t ask me how.
7 of the 9 runs… sorry for the error.
Okay, I have to give Bobby credit for playing the splits on that one.
oh, Bobby, why didn’t you use McBride in the last inning?
Whew!
c’mon McBRide we have faith in you, glad Remy is gone
Another inning till what feels so inevitable.
I swear that when I titled this game thread I didn’t expect extra innings.
Isn’t this a lot of comments for a weekday afternoon game? Seems like it’s a lot for an evening game for that matter.
Guys, don’t worry. We’ve got Langerhans and Giles coming up.
atta boy, lets go offense and end this thing. We are due to win 2 in a row, especially after Smoltzie’s performance!
I would have more confidence if Torre puts Farnsworth into the game.
There’s a start…
Holy Cow….Rivera walks Giles on 4? The ump must be hallucinating!!!
Fine with me!
3-0, he better not screw this up. He’ll probably manage to K.
5 balls in a row, good thing Frenchy isnt coming up
6 in a row
Crap. There goes our run.
I hate stolen base attempts. HATE them.
UGHHHHHH
Thanks Bobby.
What in the world. Did Marcus run on his own or did Bobby call that? That was just incredibly stupid. We deserve to lose this game.
Cox needs to go over the hit-and-run signs, because no one seems to know them. This is the second time in the last week the batter hasn’t swung in a so-called hit and run.
Why run there? One ball left! Posada threw a perfect ball.
F-ing Giles. I’m so sick of these stealing crap. Giles, Langerhans, Diaz and somebody else all recently. What a rally killer. STOP WITH THE FREE OUTS ALREADY!
giles must love the dugout, he want’s to get back in there as soon as he can
Renteria is trying his best out there.
Wow, Edgar really working Rivera.
wow giles didn’t swing at first pitch, but o well he still think hes a lead-off hitter
Caught stealing
when does Fredi’s managing career begin?
sigh
Bobby this one is on you
Rivera can’t pitch 3 innings, I guess
The Vulture is in.
no, I don’t think this one is on Bobby. Just who exactly would you have preferred for him to bring in? I think this one goes on JS.
he wont have too, we’ll lose right here. A-Rod the most overrated player in the world will probably end this
The Vultrue swoops into the game. Oh joy.
JS, didn’t call for Giles to run there
I am saying it now – based on A-rod’s splits, I would have let McBride pitch to him.
“Captain Corporate” to the ground out rescue!
Someone needs to let Vulture or ‘Carmen’ know that if he gives up a run here, he can’t get a vulture win…he simply loses.
Was Villarreal getting squeezed? ESPN’s GameCast indicates that balls 3 and 4 were on the black.
Great play, Rents!
nice D, Ed
He got squeezed a bit on ball 3 in particular. Ball 4 was probably high as well as just inside.
And we survive again.
lets find one here, Chip or Andruw will go deep
Why couldn’t we get our two shutout innings from the pen in the 8th and 9th?
OK.. Jones Bros and McCann. If we’re going to win this, this is when and where it will happen.
Heart of our order comin’ up. Hopefully we can get something.
Ask for Farnsworth and you shall receive.
Ooh, ooh, ooh! We get to smoke Farnsworth again!
YES!!!! Kyle!
good job vets, way too come through.
there again, McCann the only one to take a pitch
We need some of that close-and-late magic, Jeff.
Frenchy just hit it hard
