I’ll take the bet on Ortiz, I wouldn’t be shocked though. They would only have to pay him the minimum though but I would bet the Orioles and being reunited with Leo would be a more likely scenario than ending back up with the Braves for Ortiz.

The recent standard appears to be Rachael Ray’s other team, the 1999 Kansas City Royals. They were the first team ever to blow more saves than they converted (30 to 29). The Braves are now at 15 saves, 14 blown.
Leading bullpen pyromaniacs:
Scott Service (75 1/3 IP, 6.09 ERA)
Jeff Montgomery (51 1/3 IP, 6.84 ERA)
Matt Whisenant (39 2/3 IP, 6.35 ERA)
Tim Byrdak (24 2/3 IP, 7.66 ERA)
Brad Rigby (21 1/3 IP, 7.17 ERA)

I know it sounds bad, but we should shoot for the #1 overall draft pick in next June’s MLB draft. Trade *everyone* of value for multiple prospects ala Marlins. That chit works if your scouts are worth their salt, which the Braves guys are supposedly top notch. I’d rather lose with young players that have upside to get better, than lose with older guys (Smoltz, Chippa, Hudson etc.) that are not just in decline, but in free fall.

Of course, every decision made by the Braves right now is about three weeks late. Typical.
How about Beth Sosa? It just sounds right.
I applaud whoever it was that came up with Carmen Villarreal. That’s outstanding.
kc,
Let me correct you on 1 thing.
Every Braves decision is actually made about 8 weeks too late.
Three weeks? More like six weeks.
Stu,
I can’t remember who did last night but I agree…carmen Villareal is GOOD stuff.
Beth Sosa is pretty good but I think Rosario is the pick–plus, I think we should give the other Latin reliver, a latin name.
Alex, I guess I am being too nice.
Actually, I remember you started to suggest using Sosa as a late inning option since September of last season.
If there is a Juan Pierre, there can certainly be a Beth Sosa.
I think of all the names that were called out, “Rachel Ray” is my personal favorite.
I like that “three-week” period because that’s how long it took Bobby to finally flip the batting spots of McCann and Adam.
If we must go with a Latin name, though, Rosa is infinitely superior to Rosario.
If we traded for Ted Lilly and put him in the pen, he would be Lily Lilly.
I think Nellie Sosa. He just looks like a Nellie.
kc-
Yes…I was saying Sosa’s stuff was more built for being a reliever, especially the way he always tired out around the 5th.
I am hoping he turns this season around with this change and with Chuckie in there, I am hoping this helps the Braves psyche more.
Yeah…that Juan Pierre name thing has always been funny to me. I just wanted to help honor Jorge’s Latin heritage.
Whoa. Nelly?
ok, fine, Stu..I see you are really passionate about this. Rosa Sosa…done…ok? 🙂
That’s actually funny..
why cant we score a run in the first inning?
I am sure all your daughters have great names.
Wow, the Braves gave Lilly Lilly so much trouble in that first inning!!!
Because Marcus Giles is our leadoff hitter.
Yes…despite all the positive changes, I don’t understand why Bobby won’t move Marcus out of the first spot…heck, just flip flop Marcus with Edgar? That’s not asking much?
Don’t worry Alex, I am sure they will flip flop Marcus and Edgar by next year, if Marcus is still around!!!
By the way, I am sure this has been said before but AJ Burnett (who is talented) is Zane Smith UGLY.
kc…I guess that would be about 8 months too late! Ha!
Not to make anyone feel sicker then we all already do, but has everyone noticed how well Zach Miner has been doing for the Tigers? Good for the kid…it just bumbs me he’s not doing this in a Braves uni.
But is he Willie McGee-ugly?
Hmmmm….McGee vs. Burnett vs. Zane….that’s tough.
Since Willie looks like an alien life form, I will go with Willie.
Zane and Burnett just look like they married their sisters in their match trailers in West Virginia.
Ok…I finally saw that Jeff Fisher commercial for EA sports…hilarious!!
I tried to talk to Marcus but he wouldn’t sit still long enough. Sorry, guys.
Yikes, Frenchy…if you are going to start running to first, make sure it’s actually a ball. That looked like a strike.
Apparently, Diaz is 30-of his last-70. And yet, I find I can’t actually remember seeing him get a hit.
hey, at least he took strike 3, this is progress…right?
looked about 1/2 a foot inside to me. but our tv angles are probably different alex.
that was an early hit & run right?
diaz…bat of a giant, brain of a blue jay
Diaz’s owner better talk to him. We can’t be having runners picked off.
no lollygagging by thor
I’m working with my boy Hudson on his control. The walks are UNNECESSARY and are killing his pitch count.
i think there are 12 people at the game.
how does this happen night after night after night? Hudson is a GOOD pitcher. how does he walk 3 f’n batters in a row? ridiculous.
BTW… Kate Hudson.
Wow, even our best pitcher sucks now.
Oy vey.
Nice catch Giley
Thorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Thor must really frighten fielders; this is his second time tor each on an error in three games.
An error, a small karma slide, so…
Time for the mountain-climbing, morale-building comeback. I hope.
You know I’m trying to look at the brightside of things here, but that grounder hit by Thorman that is another example of if you put the ball in play, sometimes things happen and people make errors. Some others could take a page and make contact once and a while and see what happens.
Who wants to bet a nickle that Schuerholz makes a play for Russ Ortiz?
Best Seinfeld Reference EVER
was there any doubt Marcus wouldn’t do sh– with that at bat?
Two on, no outs, and we can’t even advance the runners. Stupidity piles upon stupidity.
Can we please win a game before coming to New York?
I don’t understand how it appears we are losing every game for the rest of the season when our supposed best pitcher can’t do squat and we can’t adavance runners against a decent but not stud pitcher?
I’ll take the bet on Ortiz, I wouldn’t be shocked though. They would only have to pay him the minimum though but I would bet the Orioles and being reunited with Leo would be a more likely scenario than ending back up with the Braves for Ortiz.
Alex, it’s all Roger’s fault.
kc,
You mean ANDIE MacDowell.
I will double that Ortiz bet and bet that JS picks up his 98 yr. old friend, Terry Mulholland.
I will take Ortiz over Cormier any day.
I disagree with that. I don’t want Ortiz back. He sucks.
Huddy has got to learn like everybody else on the staff, no good comes from walking a hitter. Walks usually lead to trouble. I just don’t understand his thought process sometimes.
I thought we might take a flyer on Jason Johnson but he’s a GB pitcher and our IF defense sucks so I guess it’s good we didn’t.
Alex, I am not a fan for Ortiz either, but that’s how much confidence I have in Cormier.
Maybe I should have said…FREE KEVIN BARRY!
Yes….agreed…free Kevin Barry. He deserves a shot too.
Rathbum: Francouer – first pitch swinging. Nah when did that start?
weeeeeee! This whole sucking thing is fun!
To quote Ashleigh Brilliant, “If you can’t learn to do it well, learn to enjoy doing it badly.” Hopefully at least the Squaws are having fun.
That was some nice D!
89 pitches already. typical.
The word “squaw” bothers me.
/anal retentive whiner
Well, Jenny, if you’ve got a better team name for the female Braves, let’s hear it.
McCann is the only player on our team worth a damn anymore.
Can I ask people something…was this whole Thorman first pitch swing b.s. a Richmond thing or something he learned after 2 days around Marcus and LaRoche and Frenchy?
McCann steals?
He IS the Braves. That’s it…just McCann and no one else.
Marcus up—inning over.
Yeah…reverse psychology worked…but still first pitch swing…
Wrong (for once)
Renteria is quickly coming back to earth.
What’s the point of coming back anyway? The bullpen will give up five runs tonight.
oh kc, ye, of little faith!
I mean what has this team done to make you think that?
Yeah Alex, I am just a fair weather fan!
How pathetic are Edgar’s Eggs?
Wow, so the Braves failed to destroy Josh Tower, and Lilly Lilly is pitching like Randy Johnson…
…so Mac, our starting pitcher is pitching fine is general except for that one terrible inning, then the Braves come back to tie the game, and the bullpen gives up runs again…this is loss type 2(b)?
I will take McCann’s Cans instead.
kc…yes, I know. I have also only loved this team since 1983 so when I criticize them, I must be fairweather too 🙂
Anyone on this forum still a proponent of being a buyer and not a seller needs their head examined.
I’d tell these fans, the Eggs and Adam’s Army and the rest, that what was fun with Francoeur’s Franks becomes much less fun when every scrub has such a group… but if I did, then there’d be no one at all coming to games.
Buyer of what? The Braves? Lemme see if I’ve got enough change in my seat cushions.
Chief, please get my head examined.
Frenchy! Yeah….you helped your OBP!
Salty’s balls would be good.
The White Sox are going to town on the Cards pitching staff. Scored 20 on ’em last night and already got 11 (all 11 off of Jason Marquis) tonight in only the 4th inning.
Yay! A rally.
“Stick ’em in your mouth and suck ’em…”
Frenchy got a clutch hit. And there is much rejoicing. Yay.
I guess I need my head examined as well. I still think we should be buyers.
The thing I like about Frenchy is his willingness to hit to all field, which makes him a better hitter than Gant already.
C’mon McCann…
Chris Hammond just gave up a homer to Jose Valentin
Mets are now leading the Reds
You are welcome.
Only McCann is capable of a productive out.
can we get a two out hit ever?
For some reason, I see a “KJ start” of a career on Thorman.
My boy Frenchy, keeping us in the game, again!
Of course we can get a two out hit, but it will cost us a lead-off homerun when the BJ’s come to bat!
Depends on whether and how we make LaRoche go away.
“In the game?” I don’t consider the Braves in the game at all unless there is at least a six-run lead when the starter is pulled.
Renteria looks good in the field tonight
Natspos are getting killed again, largely thanks to Frank Robinson deciding that it was a good idea to IBB David Ortiz to get to Manny Ramirez. 4 runs scored after that. Good managing, Frank; most teams stopped doing that several years ago.
Is the NL really this bad? The interleague play has been stunningly unbalanced. The NL Central look like posers.
Your boy, Smitty? I would say mine is right up there with him (although I really don’t think I have to say anything about McCann. I think he says enough himself).
Also, Jenny, your entry about trying to talk to Marcus was hilarious. Keep it up!
Ratherburn says you can’t relax against these guys. Is there a big league team you can relax against?
Oh wait..
Wrong, Lance. Hudson got one out first.
Typical Hudson…
Jenny, I believe the AL has more rich teams than the NL…I didn’t actually try to count though…
Can McCann pitch?
I would also like to see this stat:
In the past 20(ish) games, in innings in which we score, what percentage of the time do we surrender a run (or runs) in the next half-inning?
It seems like 100%.
At least we got the out first
Im not watching the game, does Hudson look as bad as his line?
Tennessee Brave, I think this has happened since the first game of the season. It’s all Roger’s fault.
TN Brave
This will shock you, but it is 243% I know that is impossible, but we do it!
Hudson didn’t grow you the fu-man-chu that is his problem
Crap, to the bullpen
The sound effect after Orrs foul ball sould be the theme song of this team
Ha!
I told Roger to tell the guys not to suck, but he just said he’d already told ’em.
Wow, I didn’t know the Jays have acquired Rivera from the Yankees.
Pete Orr swings a mighty fine bat…
I really like Vernon Wells. He is a Braves type of player.
Except that he doesn’t suck.
Touche, Mac.
6/1- only Braves run in bottom of 9th, no opportunities
6/3 (1)- 0 runs in 1 opportunity

6/4- 1 run in 1 of 2 opportunities
6/5- 0 runs in 3 opportunities
6/6- 2 runs in 1 of 3 chances
6/7- 2 runs in 1 of 2 chances
6/8- 2 runs in 2 of 3 chances
6/9- 2 runs in only chance
6/10- 0 runs in 2 chances
6/11- 5 runs in 2 of 3 chances
6/13- 0 runs in only chance
6/14- 1 run in 1 of 4 chances
6/15- 0 runs in only chance (other run in top of 9th inning, losing on road)
6/16- 0 runs in only chance
6/17- 1 run in 1 of 3 chances
6/18- 9 runs in 3 of 3 chances
6/20- 3 runs in 3 of 3 chances
tonight- 1 run in 1 of 2 chances
Total for June- 38 innings in which opponents hit after innings in which the Braves score. Opponents scored 31 runs in 18 of those innings. Put another way, the Braves have given back one or more runs almost half the time they’ve scored.
Oops, double-checked the math. In 40 innings after scoring runs, the Braves have given up 31 runs in 18 of them. An RA (didn’t check whether they were earned) of 6.98.
Thorman has soft hand as well. So, what’s the good of Adam?
I predict that our next win will be the night my parents finally call the plumber to fix our kitchen sink, which my mom clogged with chicken parts last week, meaning we cannot use that or the dishwasher and have been eating off paper plates and plastic forks for a week now. Given that she just came into my room and told me to take my brother somewhere other than Taco Bell for lunch because we’re having that for dinner, I don’t think we’re going to win tomorrow.
Wow.
Good work, Brian.
I think that we need something dramatic to turn the team around. I mean really dramatic. It’s time to set the stadium on fire again.
…and renaming the stadium from Turner Field to Aaron Park.
Brian J –
Thanks for the info. You went above and beyond. And might I say, that is a disturbing number.
What do you think we could get for Hudson? Bag or two of balls? Maybe a nice bat!
The D-Rays just won. We’re in sole possession of the third worst record in MLB.
Does getting rid of the Tomahawk Chop count as drastic enough? I’m basically embarrassed to be associated with it at this point.
I joined the thread late tonight, so this may have already been talked about at length, but there is a fairly new story on http://www.atlantabraves.com that says Cox has officially made the decision to move Sosa to the bullpen.
http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060621&content_id=1516049&vkey=news_atl&fext=.jsp&c_id=atl
Sorry if I am way late on this.
Great stuff Paronto.
Perfect, Chelsea. Just f*****g perfect.
Anyone have any statistical analysis on how this bullpen compares with all bullpens historically?
That hurts.
Maybe JS wants a high draft pick on his final year before retirement.
This inning is really does remind me of the late 80s–truly pathetic baseball….
woo hoo–bullpen time!
The bullpen’s book this year:
“How to take the heart out of Braves fans everywhere and stomp on it like it’s on fire! The story of the Atlanta Braves 2006 bullpen”
Do you guys remember Rocker’s meltdown. Feels like the bullpen has that same one pitch is wonderful, the next sucks just like Rocker.
I think I read this chapter before. McBride lets a couple guys on, enter Paronto and……never mind, you know how it ends.
Anyone want to write the recap for me tonight? Nothing else is working, I’m willing to try anything.
It can’t remind you too much of the 1980’s…Gene Garber could pitch circles around any of these pathetic losers we have.
You all can keep Chelsea, but I’m going with Hortense. “Hortense Paronto” is just too fun to say. And I’m going to be saying it a lot, it seems.
Mac, I can’t…I say give it to kc if he wants it?
The Mets have everything going their way: José Reyes hit for the cycle against the Reds.
He only let one guy score tonight. That’s almost Cy Paronto territory for him.
Well, everyone, the discussion on here tonight has been fun. Thanks. I’m now off to clean the bathroom. Right now, that’s as interesting as following the Braves play and the results are a whole lot more rewarding.
(If they come back now with a drastic win, I take all of the credit)
Edgar’s Eggs is just about the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. No wonder we can’t win a game
Instead of watching the Braves, I have been watching the hilarious 2nd disk of the “Daily Show” 2004 Election coverage…see, that’s why I am in a good mood…Jon Stewart is much funnier than the Braves.
..looking good Chip..
I would, but I’m following the thread only and watching a different game. Although I could probably make it up and it would fly just fine. Some variation on “bad pitching.”
And Alex, I too own that DVD set. It’s great.
Tennessee Brave–Thanks for the post. I am just catching up as well.
The same story speculates that Wayne Franklin might get a start. Forgive me for being a broken record, but what about Kevin Barry? Maybe he would not pitch well, but then again what do the Braves have to lose?
Alex, I am completely speechless about this team. That’s why I admire Mac’s motivation in writing a recap after every one of these horrible games.
Stephen, no matter how hard Kevin Barry tries, he will never get a chance.
I am thisclose to loading up the APBA software to simulate the season and describe imaginary games.
Macay McBride has 18 walks in 22 innings. That is not a recipe for success.
Mac, maybe the Braves would be 10 games back instead of 15 games back.
Billy Wagner blew it in the 9th, but Coffey is trying his hardest to blow it for the Reds.
The recent standard appears to be Rachael Ray’s other team, the 1999 Kansas City Royals. They were the first team ever to blow more saves than they converted (30 to 29). The Braves are now at 15 saves, 14 blown.
Leading bullpen pyromaniacs:
Scott Service (75 1/3 IP, 6.09 ERA)
Jeff Montgomery (51 1/3 IP, 6.84 ERA)
Matt Whisenant (39 2/3 IP, 6.35 ERA)
Tim Byrdak (24 2/3 IP, 7.66 ERA)
Brad Rigby (21 1/3 IP, 7.17 ERA)
Rachel (11 1/3 IP, 8.74 ERA)
Jose Santiago (3.42) and Alvin Morman (4.05) were decent, and several pitchers split time between the rotation and pen.
There is a hilarious typo going across the crawl at the bottom of MLB.TV now:
“Edmonds exists early against the White Sox.”
An even more hilarious typo would be if the Braves would be leading a game..
Don’t even bother tying it up here, McCann. The bullpen will just blow it in the ninth anyways.
Yeah, we have a great season, I think that 26 teams have better records that we do!
David Wright just grounded into a DP to lose the game for the Mets, 6-5. Every other NL East team has lost.
Schadenfreude: it’s better than suffering alone.
What’s really remarkable about Rachel’s season is that he didn’t strike anyone out, which is practically impossible in today’s game.
At least we are providing a public service: Schadenfreude for the rest of baseball
There’s your ballgame, right there.
If the Canes hadn’t won the cup, I’d be close to suicide about now…
“His last couple outings have not been good for him”–Torborg
Ya know he really coulda been talking about anybody on this team…he needs to be more specific
At some point, DrZachary’s thinking must be affecting the Braves- why bother making an effort to score if you’re going to give it back three minutes later?
Rachel guns them down 1-2-3 on eleven pitches. There’s something.
Death Ray was dealing tonight.
Torborg and Rathbun make my ears bleed.
Mac,
I’m already living in APBA-Land.
You suck, Marcus
If I sat on the toilet, struggling, it would feel better then watching Giles hit into a game ending DP.
kc, Mac…whomever…I am going to weep privately now.
I want the Braves to lose. I want them to suck so bad this month that they can’t possibly suck any worse for the rest of their existence.
Apropos, Marcus. Nine in a row.
“Why do we always come here? I guess we’ll never know! It’s like a kind of torture / to have to watch the show!”
See you all tomorrow.
Again 2 words as to why we are all here, night after night:
GROUP THERAPY
I forgot what winning feels like…
Don’t bother recapping Mac…
Hopeless. This one word would be enough to recap this game.
Sam, that’s what the 80s were for.
