So how will we lose this time? Glad you asked. The Braves will knock Schilling out early and take an 11-0 lead to the bottom of the fourth, when a sinkhole will open in right field, swallowing Trot Nixon alive. The game will be called for an unplayable field and forfeited to the Red Sox.

What the hell is going on with your guys team? The braves cant be as bad as the record indicates…..I said you guys would be bad but not like this. Getting beat up by the fish? that is just crazy. Good luck tonight as I hate the red sox and braves equally so I guess ill root for you guys tonight……………root to lose that is. lol, im just mess’n with ya. I could care less who wins, I hate them both
Cheers
Dan
PS
Has it been talked about at all , that you guys would go after soriano? You have the prospects to land him. I m not sure what your money situation is next year( who comes off the books to free up money) But he would be a nice bat to have with chipper, and A.Jones. What a 1,2,3 punch that would be.
but I guess pitching would probably be your first priority this off season. You guys actually rank well in hitting, so I guess sori would be a no go.
Nationals win, Marlins win.
Sole possession of last place.
If the Braves trade for Soriano, I’d stop rooting for them.
No, there have been no rumors about such a trade, and for good reason. It is a stupid idea.
And if Mac’s scenario plays out, we will hear the following on ESPN:
Joe Morgan: You know, computers can tell you a lot, but they just can’t tell you those little things that I can see that would make you get swallowed by a sinkhole. Look at Trot Nixon, for example. He has some of the skills that Theo Epstein likes, but obviously those skills just don’t translate into a game like this, because now he’s dead. You really have to watch the game on the field to be able to see those things that machines just don’t tell you. Speed, for example. Speed really disrupts a game. It disrupts the pitcher’s timing, it helps you run away from sinkholes. We’re seeing this right here.
Jon Miller: And now, with Trot Nixon buried alive, the Red Sox outfield situation gets a little murky. Peter Gammons has more on this…
Jordan to the DL and Thorman called up. What are the odds they’ll actually let him start? I would love for them to give him a chance.
11 runs? ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
I think Jeff Porter knows some voodoo magic which allows him to aggravate injuries. Some numbness for Reitsma turned into bone chips, a bruised collarbone for Jordan turned into a crippling injury, and I think Giles’ sore thumbs are going to end up causing him to spontaneously combust.
And Mac, your prediction is ridiculous. There’s no way we’ll score more than three.
Rob, at least Jeff knows how to injure the bad players. Okay, some of the bad players. Only 17 more to go.
Jenny, are you channeling? That’s just spooky.
If I’m channeling Joe Morgan, I’m going to go kill myself right now.
The Mets win with a ridiculous 7th inning. Some Orioles player lost the ball IN HIS JERSEY. We have done a lot of things wrong the last few weeks. But we have not done anything that stupid. I am waiting.
Please Mr. Blanke Dont Sit By And Watch Our Team Get Sold To Another Corporation. We Need A Real Owner Who Might Actually Care. Liberty Media, Come On! They Dont Care About The Braves, They Are From Denver. It Just Makes Me Sick.
Now we can start our 14 consecutive 3rd place finishes
Jenny- That is the funniest thing you have ever posted
And We Dont Need A Firesale. We Need Another Good Starter (zito?) Who Doesnt Get Hurt Every Start (horam) And A Leadoff Hitter…the Rest Will Fall Into Place. I Think Stockman Or Even Sosa Could Close A Game, If We Get A Chance In The 9th.
Hey, shawn, why do you capitalize every word?
his TRS-80 does that for him
Hey, remember when I was your fifth starter? Bet you wish you had me now. Actually, Mr. Schuerholz, I’m just hanging out here with my best friends Mike Cather and Kevin McGlinchy. We’re all younger than Mike Remlinger, and ready to suit up as soon as you need us.
Oops, gotta go. Omar Daal just came over, and we’re going to play a rubber of bridge. Bye for now–see you soon!
He was educated in Georgia public schools, hmm.
Chuck James Watch: 7 IP, 8 H, 2 BB, 3 R, 2 K. 104 Pitches. Didn’t win or lose . . . actually the game is still being played 10 innings after James came out.
Hmm…is this better for ya? I Use My Phone And Its Easier This Way. Sorry
Aaah…Joe Morgan…
My bloodpressure is already rising…

Jacob Luft latest chat on Si.com….that the Braves are done. Some of the user comments are pretty interesting.
Yahoo is reporting this as our Lineup
Name AB AVG HR RBI
1. M Giles, 2B – – – –
2. E Renteria, SS – – – –
3. S Thorman, LF – – – –
4. A Jones, CF – – – –
5. B McCann, C – – – –
6. J Francoeur, RF – – – –
7. A LaRoche, 1B – – – –
8. W Betemit, 3B – – – –
9. J Smoltz, P – – – –
its very unlikely that we would stick Thorman in the 3 hole at this point.
Wilson has struggled the last couple of games..but I’d still rather have him hit lead-off..have Giles 7th and LaAutomaticOut 8th.
I’m pretty excited to see Thorman though..
What a way to start off an MLB career…..facing Curt Schilling. Here’s hoping Thorman does what Francoeur did in his first game.
ESPN is reporting the same lineup. Welcome to the bigs, Scotty. Bout damn time.
I wonder how long Chipper’s injury will keep him out? Not that a break might not be a good thing, he hasn’t been doing much lately (join the club, Chipper). Also surprised to see Scott Thorman in the 3-hole, I might have stuck McCann there, but eh. Anyway, here’s Boston’s lineup:
1. K. Youkilis 3b
2. M. Loretta 2b
3. D. Ortiz 1b
4. M. Ramirez lf
5. T. Nixon rf
6. J. Varitek c
7.C. Crisp cf
8. A. Gonzalez ss
9. C. Schilling p
Can’t wait to see Thorman. Jenny’s earlier post is right, we’ve lost a lot of ways but I’ve never seen anything like the O’s today. They looked like the Bad News Bears before coach Buttermaker shows up.
3 hole in his first mlb start. they must expect big things from thor tonight.
Mr. Thorman, meet Mr. Schilling.
I sincerely can’t remember the last time we beat that guy.
I was just curious, shawn. I don’t actually care.
I’m excited to see Thorman, but why is he batting third? For this game he should try:
1. Betemit
2. Giles
3. Renteria
4. AJ
5. McCann
6. Thorman
7. Francoeur
8. LaRoche
Just an idea. Let’s go Braves! …please
Thorman will go 3-4 and not play for two weeks
He must hit 3rd in AAA and Boddy wants him to feel comfortable.
Why the hell not? Nothing else is working.
Well at elast we have faced him before. We are terrible against guys we have never seen
Good point.
Might as well. Cheers for him. Here’s hoping we can make it 16 of 20.
Jenny IM me
At least it is a different lineup.
Finally S Thorman 🙂 I’m excited a little about him.
KJ called up last season and then hit in the 3 spot, I remember.
Look, everybody, it’s Joe Morgan. Are we all having fun?
I think CHipper quit
Joe Morgan brings me to tears…
Bruce Lmighty is on USA, if this gets ugly quick
Is that radar gun right?
Too many fastballs
listen to how happy morgan and miller got when he hit that… wow
Yay, we get to listen to “Bay-tah-meet” all night. Ugh, Jon Miller.
and.. I forgot how he said Betemit..
Stop being so paranoid. Jeez.
A hit
3-pitch K on all balls. Fitting right in, Scott!
Yes, I’m toying with him. I am not that quick to condemn.
Thorman will fit in here, swinging at pitches he can’t do anything with.
Pull your head out of your ass, Andruw.
Theo Epstein called again. He wants us to swing at everything to keep Schilling’s pitch count down because he’s old. Like I said yesterday, sure, Theo.
I like how we are swinging at high pitches. Maybe we will lay off the ones that roll in the dirt
I couldn’t tell who the rookie was, number 20 or 25?
Schilling will almost certainly rip a double..
Schilling pitched Thorman the way he used to pitch Galarraga. He kept throwing it in the same spot (up & away) until he lays off. The Big Cat never could. Thorman will see that pitch until he takes one.
Or not.
Schilling will get a 2-run triple here..
Nopes..he won’t
I love the Miller MOrgan Rummor mill about Smoltz
At least we are still in the game…
The only thing I like about Joe Morgan is when he shuts the F*** up
Good grief, Francoeur’s OBP is disgusting. WTF is he hitting 6th?
wow.. Jeff .. that was uuuggly
Frenchy’s ABs are fairly predictable, especially against guys who actually know how to pitch.
Re: Announcers
With the exception of the Yanks radio buffoon John Sterling, baseball announcers don’t bug me at all. I don’t care if they say the earth is flat. Don’t care, never did.
ESPN Panacea: If you don’t like the announcers, listen to the game on radio. Or, like me, put on some music. I don’t need an announcer to tell me what’s going on.
Tonight’s music alternative: Elvis Costello & Allen Toussaint’s “The River in Reverse.”
What’s more ugly…Francouer striking out…Jordan’s first base “defense”..Remlinger “pitching” or Julian Tavarez’s face..???
Tavarez does have a face made for radio.
I forgot to add Todd Pratt’s “baserunning”
I’m going Francoeur with Julian “Freddy Kruger” Tavarez a close 2nd.
Jenny,
I’ve been preaching Frenchy hitting 8th forever, don’t send him to AAA bud let’s stick him down in the order
Frechy is already on a AAA team
How is that Toussaint/Costello record, Ububba? On paper it should be great.
giles 2-2
crazy
Heh..what’s wrong with Marcus today…
Frenchie to Richmond is only to work on pitch recognition, and cleaning up his bad habits on pitch selection.
It is to save him, not punish him.
Wow, was that a “clutch hit”? I’d almost forgotten what those look like!
Sweet!
Way to go, Andruw! Keep it up, boys!
urlhix,
Two listens (and a viewing of its 30-min “making of” DVD) and I’m already digging it.
I’m a real Costello completist, but there are also records of his that I’m not crazy about. This one is just real fun, especially if you like pianos. Putting together Toussaint & EC’s own guy Steve Nieve is really a treat. (I have tickets for their show at the Beacon Theater in NYC, which is sort of like Atlanta’s Fox Theater, so I’m psyched about that one.)
I’d give it a thumbs up.
Wow…look at this..
We’re leading!!
Was that really a 2 out RBI? I don’t think I’ve seen one of those in a month.
That lasted long.
Whoo! A lead. Now let’s keep it.
Thanks Ububba. Toussaint is a true living master musician and songwriter. I’m a big fan of EC as well, but he can be hit or miss sometimes. Often within the same record. Sounds like I’ll have to check that one out.
As I’m typing this there’s goes the lead. Oh well….
Ah well..it was fun while it lasted..
Well, at least they’re only solo shots…
I just turned around a told my girlfriend, “If things go as usual, Smoltz should give up a solo shot to Manny right here to tie the game back up. That’s what we’ve done all year. As soon as we get a run, we give it back up.” Then, look what happened. I don’t think I am a psychic, I just think we are that crappy and predictable.
My Cable Is Out…i Am Listening To The Radio, And They Just Said That Francoeur Was The Best Hitter In Baseball W/ 2 Outs.
I think that at bat by Manny was basically the Braves season in a nutshell…
shawn, you in houston?
I’m going to bed at 10 (CT) and I don’t think that the game will be over then, so recap in the morning.
It is only tied, we are ok
I have been avoiding Braves info all weekend.
Who did we dump to get Thorman? Was he the replacement for Chipper goin on the DL we assume?
I just love how we had a lead for a whole half inning–fun.
That lousing bunt notwithstanding, in the last inning or so, we’re pinging some shots off Schilling.
BJ is on the DL, a place where he belongs to the last two seasons. Thank goodness.
How Many Times Do We Play The Mets?
i think 9 more times.
Jordan is on the “faux DL” like Judy Reitsma? Awesome.
Is this one of those awesome “fairy Tale” DL’s where we never ever ever have to see either of this players again?
How fast can we get Vulture, Pratt and Remlinger onto the imaginary DL?
Jordan took one off the collar bone
Diaz was killing the ball
Im In Indy. Im Getting Sick Of The Mets Fans Talking In Other Blogs.
Mets fans make most of us here sick..
Met fans can be like Red Sox fans: They’ve had such little success in their history that they don’t know how to handle it when it happens.
They’re like a school in the summertime: No class.
Someone shoot me.
I can’t listen to the vil and banal Joe Morgan verbally adding Smoltz to the Red Sox staff.
I hate Morgan and I am at the point of equally hating the Red Sox.
I take a day off on account of watching live matchup. Judging by what someone said, the idea itself is absurd. There is no knowing how it will come out. But interesting game. I know sometimes I do take a leap in the dark 🙁
Red Sox fans are reminding me of the classless, obnoxious, piggish way the Cubs fans acted in Atlanta in the 2003 first round.
It just makes me hate the red Sox now.
Oh wow, JS is already thinking Davies and James in the rotation along with Smoltz, Hudson, and Hampton next season. I like that. They are finally freeing James.
Now, work on the bullpen JS.
Joe Morgan is bullshit…much like a Reitsma save opportunity..
kc,
did JS admit that while he was signing books the other day at the Ted?
I still agree with Schultz…JS signing his book in the midst of this disaster makes me sick and angry. I really think it’s a sign that we need fresh leadership in and out of the dugout…JS is now more concerned with his own ego and legacy.
I Miss Goin To The Braves Games…maybe I Should Move Back.
Through 5 IP: Schilling 84 pitches, Smoltz 83.
Alex, I love when Schultz just wrote. The article speaks out my feeling as well. I strongly believe this year’s problems are the fault of JS and nobody else, and he is the one responsible to get it right.
oh, I meant “I love WHAT Schultz just wrote.” Sorry guys.
Smoltz is asking for it
Whats Happend To Smoltz? No Heat? Walked The Bases Loaded.
*shoots Alex R.*
You’re welcome, Alex.
😀
I feel like I’ve got to offer something of a defense for JS this offseason. While it’s true he didn’t get much done (although getting Boston to eat that much of Renteria’s contract is classic JS), that doesn’t mean he wasn’t trying. He’s not one to tip his hand while the game’s being played, so there’s no telling what he was trying to get done last year. Farnsworth bolting was something of a surprise (although in retrospect, Farnsworth’s comment about wanting to go somewhere he could win is starting to look prescient). How much would you have paid for Wagner or Gordon? Who was on the trade block? You can float all the speculative trades that you want, but the other side has to be willing to make the deal. I wonder if JS’s reputation hasn’t hurt him a bit in being able to make deals… Anyway, I don’t buy that he wasn’t working to make this a better team.
Smoltz was trying to be too careful that inning. He has got to trust his stuff more.
That Could Have Been Ugly…i Was Gettin A Sick Feelin In My Stomache
I feel certain that JS was working to make the team better. I just think, in the context of what the good GM’s of today bring to the table in the way of understanding what wins baseball games, JS has just been passed.
Theo Epstein would never, never start his season with 2 corner outfielder’s who projected to be on base at .260, with little power (as JS did with Mondesi and Jordan, in 2005).
This current team is performing just about to what would be expected. Look at Jordan’s OPB the last 2 years-is anyone surprised when it is in the low .600’s this year? That is the player he is. Yet, JS trotted him out at a hitting position. I think the GM position has just passed JS by.
Way to go, LaRoche! Let’s get it back.
Pinch hit for Smoltz?
Yes, we need a run, and he has thrown enough pitches.
I think it’s more an issue of budget than anything else. He’s got a lot of money tied up and he has to spend what he has wisely. Along those lines, I’m pretty pissed at MLB approving the sale of the Braves to Liberty Media. I guess it’s against MLB’s interests to have a competitive team in Atlanta.
Billy, I am sure JS don’t go to the office listening to iPod everyday. I am sure he tried. However, he was trigger shied the whole off-season. The mere fact that he actually considered Reitsma can be a closer is a stupid mistake. The fact that he only acquired Cormier, the Vulture, and Remlinger to cover the injury risks of Boyer, Devine, and Foster is a stupid mistake. If Cormier, the Vulture, and Remlinger are the three best relievers in baseball the Braves can acquire, that’s pretty sad. The idea of having three question marks in Thomson, Sosa, and Davies behind Smoltz and Hudson is a stupid idea. These are the problems I have mentioned since the Ausmas homer, and the Braves are still trying solve these problem as of TODAY.
The point is: I am sure he tried, but his effort is pretty weak.
billy, if you look at the salaries careful enough, there are monies to spend.
Jurries instead of Jordan would have saved money.
One million for Mondesi was like flushing money down the toilet.
Spending middle money for middle to lower level veterans when younger, cheaper alternatives are available is a mistake that the great new GM’s have figured out how to avoid.
…unless TW lied about the $80M payroll and the real payroll is actually less than $75M.
Bobby cost us this one
I agree w/ Cox trying to win 1 game by keeping Smoltz out there…for the all criticims I do heap on Bobby, I will also compliment him when I think he’s trying his damndest for a night to give the Braves the best chance to win.
Who would you have signed? Todd Jones wanted a two year deal. Teams like the Mets and the Blue Jays pushed free agent salaries pretty high this past year. He got burned on the K@#b deal last year. What else could he have done?
Bobby will not take Smoltz out with less than 120 pitches. He can’t trust anyone in the bullpen, thanks to JS.
Billy, you can check the whole list of free agent relievers last winter. Again, if Cormier, the Vulture, and Remlinger are the three best relievers JS can acquire, that’s pretty sad.
I would have pinch hit for Smoltz. It’s not a move that makes me nuts because I know what our bullpen is capable of. But, I believe, when you’re losing and your pitcher is over 100 pitches, you gotta roll the dice. Can’t win if you don’t score.
ububba, I think we can argue for either side. I don’t have much problem with Bobby’s decision tonight.
Yes, I blame JS 100%.
This mess is all his fault. If he’d spend less time tooting his own and writing books and more time finding smart deals for good, cheap relievers rather then making half ass effprts at big pricey names like Todd Jones when he knows he can’t sign then but it helps make JS seem like he’s trying to Braves fans, then it shows JS is a preening fraud, especially when he takes his well tailored ass, sits in the stadium and signs his damned book, while the team plays like garbage.
I am sorry, but if anyone can’t see what a giant phony JS has become and that we need a fresh face in there, then that’s their own problem. sorry…just my opinion but Schultz was 100% on the Money and god bless him for calling out mr. politician phony onto a public stage. God bless him.
we didn’t get in this position in one year, either.
How about a young reliever with 33 innings, 27 k’s and 6 walks, the league hitting .185 against him, with an ERA of 2.45-would that help this team?
The bottom of the Sox order was coming up. Smoltz was running on fumes. I didn’t think there was any reason to bring him back out. Plus we had a scoring chance. Pretty stupid in my book.
You have to hit for Smoltz. The lefties were killing Schilling
But as much as I criticize Cox, I appreciate him keeping Smoltz out there and not just screwing us over right away with a Vulture or Remlinger appearance.
I think we can all agree on this.
A tired, old Smoltz is better then Remlinger or Vulture.
Agree?
So, you have $5 million to offer on a one year deal to one guy. Who do you take? Or, if you have a boatload of wholes and you have to spread that $5 million to fill all of them, what do you do? Really, though, for the most part, you have cheap and you have good. Where are the cheap good guys? They’re not free agents.
BTW, Theo Epstein is a horrible comparison for JS; he actually has money to work with.
agreed. Smoltz, 7 years from now and 5 years out of baseball, will be better than both of those guys.
Alex, I think it’s pretty ironic that JS is writing this book on the year the time has struggled so much. As Stephen has mentioned a few weeks back, I agree that JS learned the wrong lessons from last year’s experience. He simply relied too much youth on his plan for this year.
So, Gammom said the Braves payroll is at mid-$70M. So, TW did lied about the payroll if that’s the case.
I am not surprised if Andruw is indeed hurting. The guy plays everyday regardless of his health.
Alex,
I beg to differ: Doesn’t matter who’s better. We’re losing, remember? Gotta score & not give them outs.
Not only do we suck, but we can’t catch a break. Ever.
I’m with Alex R. on this one. Normally, I’d pinch hit for him, but who do you give the ball to after that? Better to count on Giles to come up with a 2 out hit than count on the bullpen to keep the game close.
Theo Epstein puts guys in his line-up who get can on base and score runs. He wouldn’t be caught dead claiming to be behind the brains of signing Raol Mondesi and Brian Jordan as his corner outfielders, as JS did in SI 2 springs ago. I think every GM who had had those guys or passed on them had to be laughing their heads off at that one.
Billy-Jay,
For months now, we have all listed name after name after name of talented relief pitchers from Salomon Torres to Scott Linebrink to Scot Shields to many, other pitchers that could have been had this winter or now through free agenyc or now, with trades.
So, JS can’t keep lying with the Todd Jones excuse. Stop hiding behind that.
Had he not been worried about book sales, he could have gotten something, anything done…and not just relied on the obvious crap signing of Remlinger, among others…just sheer laziness.
Remlinger could’ve got out Alex Gonzalez and JT Snow.
Yeah, that’s right.
If Bobby pulls McCann, I’ll kill him
Brian’s going yard now..
they way we are hitting, you have to pull Smoltz
At least the loathsome Miami Heat are losing. I’ve never seen a big collection of pricks in all my life.
Billy, the point is not that $5M. JS has a flawed plan heading to the offseason. He has more than $10M commited to HoRam, Sosa, Thomson and Reitsma. He is flexible is making trades, but he was commited to the youth and not having a backup plan in place in case the kids and the question marks struggle.
I have…The Yankees..
Jeremy,
Spurs fan so GO MIAMI HEAT. I hate Cuban and Nowitzki and though the Heat are a collection of a-holes, by default, I am rooting for them.
McCann walks, Frenchie HR? That would be nice.
I like this match up
Frenchy can hit Rudy
I love the Dolphins..but I can’t stand the Heat..nor Shaq..nor Antione Walker..nor Jayson Williams..so I hope the Mavs kick them in the teeth..
Come on Frenchy..do something
bfan,
if Jeff hits a homer and we win, could be a turning pt.; that would be nice.
by the way, in this year of struggle, can we have a round of applause for McCann, maybe the 2nd or 3rd best hitting catcher in MLB?
I am not surprised if Andruw is indeed hurting. The guy plays everyday regardless of his health.
Yes, thank you for everything, Andruw.
hooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Frenchy!
Called
That’s why they stick with the kid. He does have unlimited power.
Alex, I am sure the fact that Mavs are in the final simply kills you. Tim Duncun was so close is winning that series for the Spurs.
I LOVE FRENCHY!!!
holy schneikies!
Oh my word…we all called that.
Yeah Jeff!
Hot damn…
I called the Hr..just on the wrong guy.. WHOOOO Frenchy
At least I give credit to JS for not signing Seanez.
Now where are all the “Send Frenchy to Richmond” people… HUh???!!!!
He’s either going to be Rob Deer+ or .275 and 35+ every year. He could hit 25 HRs in his sleep.
Told you I liked the match up
Is Smoltz going for the 150-pitch outing tonight?
maybe the first time I have so as much smiled during a braves game in.. say.. 2 weeks?
Did I just see Smoltz grab his glove and hit the field??
I kinda thought Seanez woulda been a good signing, actually. He had a helluva year last year, but he apparently did read the scouting reports on Francoeur.
I just had the feeling when he made the call to the pen
um, right here on Frenchie to Richmond. When we wake up tomorrow, he will still have the worst OPB of any RF in the national league.
He is too talented to be there; give him some level of strike zone judgment and he is HOF material.
WE read the report on him, first pitch goffer balls
kc,
Yes, it does…I hate hate Mark Cuban and can’t stand Dirk. But I love Avery Johnson and I give him tremendous props because he outcoached my man and his mentor, Gregg Popovich.
And considering what an unbelieveably class and quiet guy Popovich is, he was the first one to congrat AJ and admit that AJ out coached him.
The officiating in many of the games wasn’t great, but Avery did a nice job and showed he earned coach of the year so if they win the title, he will be the only Mav I am happy for.
But I am rooting for the Heat mainly because of Cubn.
That’s what I thought, McBride this inning. Bobby is making the right decisions tonight.
Sweet. Maybe we can win one.
Fair enough on JS, I’m interested enough to keep defending him, but it gets a little thick on here at times.
Wow. McBride’s dealing tonight.
Heh..we might actually win a game… (i feel strange)
good pitchin’ by McBride!
damn get ’em mcbride
McBride is dealing tonight! Would be a big boost to have the pen come in and just shut them down.
Billy,
I hear ya and appreciate your P.O.V.
You’re always decent and nice to argue with and it’s cool.
I have just found JS has become a phony…didn’t used to seem that way until the last few years and now seems to hide behind the “budget crunch” excuse when teams like the A’s with a smaller payroll do such a better job–you know?
that’s just what continually frustrates me.
McBride has a lot of talent. When he learns, he’s going to be tough. I wonder if he could start.
We can’t lose em all.
Alex, I am rooting for the Mavs because of Cuban. What other team has a TRUE fan as their owner? Where were the Mavs before Cuban and where would they be now without him? Love him or hate him you cant deny what he’s done for the Mavs.
If we win tonight, it will be an odd, pleasant feeling, one free of gas and heartburn!
Rock on, Alex R.
I think we all know this situation isn’t going to get any better before the sale. And it may get worse after.
Maybe Mark Cuban can buy the Braves…
😀
Land,
Yes, I do agree…and to be honest, I would kill for him to own the Braves.
But I also can’t stand the way he couldn’t win with some class once in a while and trashes the city of San antonio and their fans, and this is one of the classiest and nice organizations and nicest fan bases, in sports. It was dispicable.
But I would take Cuban over Liberty Media!!!!!!!!!!
Yes Billy, I am not high on Liberty Media.
Cuban is a lifelong Pirate fan & he’s considered getting in with a group to buy the Cubs.
That’s the problem with kids. They can be very inconsistent.
Wow, I shouldn’t be surprised but I am?”
Two sweet Ks and then gets a case of the Shitsmas! )(&)&)(*&)(*&)(*^%(&^%
f-ng McBride now?
Will we EVER WIN A GAME AGAIN? WHY GOD WHY.
I cant stand this.
And then half of Turner Field cheers. It’s just sickening.
McBride doing his best Reitsma impression… 🙁
Alex, that’s my whole point about this flawed plan, JS just simply expects too much out of these kids.
And those RedSox fans chanting “lets go RedSox” IN OUR OWN DAMNED STADIUM!!!! I would rather lose than to have to listen to that in our own freaking stadium. Spoiled, worthless atlanta fans. That pisses me off to no end.
Bad Location, McBride
ububba,
Yes…I know about Cubes and the Pirates. hell, give us Ted Turner back or Arthur Blank…just give us a generous rich guy who cares about winning. and not an f-ng corporation…that crap has to stop.
McKay
McBride
Mc walk
Mc walk
Mc hit
Mc Uh-oh
Chill, he just missed a couple of times. He dominated Papi and Manny
Land,
We should be mad at the freaking fairweather Braves fans but Red Sox fans are just sickening…I am so tired of them…they act like they are owed everything in life and all of us should care about the Red Sox.
jesus christ.
forget this
And we lose another game. Love it.
I rather see him (JC) pitch at this point than this worseless pen…..
Hopeless. Utterly f—ing hopeless.
Lovely.
I have seen this movie before.
We simply cannot win another game this year. we end the year with 30 wins.
Can’t s say I’m surprised… not like we’re ever going to win again
unbelievable
this is beyond embarrassing, guys.
Thanks JS, give Bobby a freaking bullpen my %$’%$ sake.
@!*#$
Worst.Bullpen.Ever.
Play for the #1 overall pick, fire sale, and start over.
Good night all.
I am going to throw up now and then watch my DVR Recording of “Entourage”.
I REFUSE to believe this is the best bullpen JS can put together with a $70M+ payroll.
I hate my life
Hah! That’s just very improbable. Looked so good against Ortiz and Manny… then poof… then Paranto… then.. wow. We really might never win again.
I laugh because it hurts too much to cry.
Tonight we’re gonna party like it’s 1988.
Great…
Not like Papelbon needs the insurance or anything
Grab seven randomly selected fans and they could do better than this.
Paronto is a thermonuclear device. Ka-boom.
we really cant be surprised now can we?
Nocahoma, the 1988 bullpen was actually pretty good. I’d gladly take Paul Assenmacher or Charlie Puleo or even washed-up Bruce Sutter over these clowns.
God I hate McBride.
Inexcusable with all those walks. I blame him more than Poronto.
We are now in last place.
WTF?? You serious Paronto??
I wish I was still in my mother’s womb
kevin youklis looks mildly retarded.
and cox should’ve left mcbride in. paronto sucks, he’s always sucked. i don’t care what his numbers look like this year. he’s a bum.
with remlinger this could actually get worse
Well, looks like it’s time to go to work.
Later, all.
Once again we take a two run lead into the 8th and now Boston is up 9-5. I can stand this! How many ways can we find to lose a game?! We need to make a move fast. Our bullpen is just awful right now.
ortiz vs remlinger….wow
McBride walks hitters
Paronto in for relief
Braves lose again
listen to all these idiot bandwagon sox fans. 99 percent of ’em probably think tony conigliaro is a character on the sopranos.
still remain 1out. very vey long long inning
francoeur is a cruel cruel human being…
Can’t get mad at the opponent’s fans when we’re giving them reason to cheer.
For the record, after the first 2 Ks, 8 consecutive batters reached against 3 different pitchers.
Reminds me of the time when I was a little kid and playing APBA with a friend of mine. His bullpen gave up the lead & he burned Clay Carrol’s 1973 card. Lit it up & burned it. Now I understand…
actually maybe its JS or BC or PARONTO that are crue human beings
Manny made both the 2nd and 3rd out. Wow.
ESPN’s current graphic shows teams’ “Passion for Excellence.”
The Braves are showing their “Passion for Excrement.”
Bobby falling into a dilemma. Who can trust in the bullpen!!!!
uhh…brule, i think bobby fell into that problem in march
We should trade Betemit for pitching
gosh joe morgan is such a freaking moron
What is the record for most runs given up with two outs and no one on? Six has to be close.
Yeah Rudy Seanez went to the mound thinking.. ” I am going to give up a 3-run HR .. only to wake my teammates up.. ”
Idiocy
I’ve had it on mute since the 6th and my blood pressure’s doing OK. I recommend it. That or a lot of alcohol.
anyone know what the record is for the longest losing streak? seriously, i know we’re probably not near it now, but just so i dont have to ask again in a couple weeks when its getting close.
Joe Morgan should honestly be slapped for saying that
thats the quote that made me write that
I too am going to watch my dvr recording of Entourage and then watch Deadwood after that. We will actually be in last place after this game.
Good news is it cant get any worse.
Joe Morgan happy
Braves streak division is dead
Will throw big party
I thought so Matt, I hope we are the only two who had to listen to that..
only march? Matt, you know Bobby showed much patience with his guys lol 😀
so you think paronto sucked so bad to “wake the braves up” and get the win?
Joe Morgan should get slapped for breathing
EZ, the 20th century record is 23. Phillies, July 29 to August 20, 1961. Ended it against the Braves, of course.
“anyone know what the record is for the longest losing streak?”
21 or 22 games.
Oddly, the Phils also had 30 wins at the time. Started 30-64, ended 30-87.
Chipper owns Timlin
Haha good point Matt
C’mon Chipper, I can’t manage anymore excitement for this team after tonight.. but still, I can hope
Never mind. Brian looked it up.
Gahh!
C’mon ‘Druw
How nice would this be if McBride got out of the inning?
Come on Andruw…
thankyou brian and dan
this is just a tease.
Look for something to hit early in the count
Alright McCann…
C’mon!
Long one here?
Does anyone know if the Heat or the Mavericks won tonight? Not wanting to turn this into a basketball thread though.
Still playing, I believe Dan
Dallas leading by 3 with 7 minutes to go in the 4th
freakin typical
without that HR…its 7-7
without those walks it’s 7-3…
without a bullpen…we suck
Papps is due
are those morons chanting yankees suck? obsess much?
Ray has been pitching like crap lately.
Nero Schuerholz fiddles while Atlanta burns.
my wife think pappelbon looks evil
Dan
Who is he going to get? You know he is trying
And Schuerholz and Nero have even more in common: we can blame both fires on Christians (Reitsma). I can say that! I’m a Christian! HA!
The ESPN guys say Schuerholz is waiting until after the all-star break and near the trade deadline of July 31. By then, it’s to late even for a wild card spot.
HOW WAS THAT FOUL!?
it did look fair at first
It was foul
he really does look kinda evil
It was foul. It sure looked fair before the replay.
one freaking pitch
LAST PLACE HERE WE ARE!
heat by 1 with 1:40 to go
Oh well, we will make a move soon, I say we trade Betemit
Ninety-two games to go. Oh joy.
What if we lost all of them
The Braves won’t lose on Monday. I promise it.
McCann will crash his motorcycle on Monday
Not funny.
I was really happy with our offense tonight. Smoltz pitched well too. I see us making a move to get a bullpen. I’m serious. I think we’ll trade for a whole new bullpen. There’s no way these clowns will be here very soon.
Will someone explain to me how we’re only 7.5 back in the WC?
Granted, we have about 40,000 teams to pass – but hey, we’re 7.5 back.
Rob, I only wish the moves will come soon. However, JS is not known for pulling fast triggers…so, I am concerned the moves will only be too little and too late for the team.
Here’s a hypothetical:
Let’s say the Braves go on a bit of a streak now, not really making a dent in the division race, but say creeping within 4-5 games of the wild card.
You are JS and you get a call from a major league GM with an offer of two TOP prospects and a scrub for Tim Hudson. Do you pull the trigger, or instead hold on to him and buy some bullpen help instead?
I pull the trigger. The wild card race doesn’t start really meaning anything until the end of August. And the way this team has been playing is showing us that there are just too many holes. Even if we did get the wild card, we wouldn’t go anywhere. It’s been this way for a few years now, just never quite so obvious as this. Look to next year, stick with that plan, and fix some of these holes that have been growing since like 2001. Sometimes you just have to step back and retool, and this year is a sign that we didn’t do it soon enough.
I keep Hudson. If we kiss goodbye to this year, it doesn’t mean that we have to kiss goodbye to next year, too.
Glad I missed the game! I think that it can actually be a good thing that we have reached rock bottom. Now, JS should be under no illusion that we are in any kind of divisonal or wild card race. True reconstruction–with whatever painful choices must be made–is now a possibility.
We still have lots of young talent in Atlanta and on the farm and future can be bright if we nurture it–instead of trading it for shorterm gains.
I’d keep Hudson too. He is a sure thing and I’m looking forward to the Smoltz, Hudson and Hampton rotation next year. Top prospects mean nothing, they can still lay a gigantic egg.
This is HORRIBLE! Last place….behind the freakin’ Marlins…a AAA team! JS, we need Willis, M. Cabrera, and either Todd Jones or Valverde from the D’backs. Yes, Valverde has struggled lately….but he can’t be any worse than what we have right now. And he does have 14 saves!
You know, I try not to be too critical of the Braves because I just have this feeling that we’re gonna make the playoffs again…because…truthfully, we’re not that far behind last year’s record at this point, and we did pretty damn good last year. But we HAVE to make some moves (good moves) to get us back in this hunt. It’s that time!
Alright, call me a sick-o, but I was genuinely curious to know the last time the Braves had played this poorly (3-17) for this long of a stretch.
I didn’t bother to look up anything between 1991 & 2005, except for a relatively small stretch in September, 1996, when they went 2-11. The only reason I remember that is because I went to the 2 consecutive wins that snapped the bad stretch–at Shea, of course.
In 1990, they had a stretch where they went 6-21, including 7 in a row at one point.
In 1989, they had a stretch where they went 6-20-1 (yes, a tie), including 8 in a row at one point.
In 1988, they had 3 particularly brutal stretches. They opened 0-10, skidding to a 3-16 start. They had another stretch when they went 5-24. They finished the season on a 5-16 spiral to round out 106 losses.
I’d like to think we’re a long way from those days, but after tonight, this has just gotten beyond ridiculous.
I agree ububba, it’s gotten WAY out of hand. Something has to be done. And what’s up with all the ‘fair-weather’ Boston fans filling up half the seats in our own back yard???????
You’re getting mad at the wrong people. Nothing wrong with rooting for your team. I live in NYC & have enjoyed many a Met scalping at Shea. BoSox fans are often narcisistic, pseudo-intellectual bores, but I wouldn’t call them fair-weather.
Upon further Retrosheet study, I would be remiss if I didn’t include the infamous 2-19 stretch by the 1982 Braves, which is really one of the weirdest years a team will ever have. They won the West, but they were freaky-streaky.
They opened 13-0, of course, then lost 5 in a row, then won 3 in a row. During the season, they had these other stretches: 3 wins followed by 4 losses; 4 wins followed by 4 losses; 4 wins followed by 4 losses followed by 3 wins. The whole season is like that—chunks of wins followed by chunks of losses, including a 3-game losing streak in the NLCS. Truly bizarre.
On a sidenote, how great of a website is retrosheet ??? I was curious as to what happened with the “tie” in ’89. The game vs. St Louis on May 28th that uBubba was referring to was 3-3 and then called because of rain and the game was called in the 10th inning. I mean, ten years ago, could you have imagined that if you didn’t remember what happpened with something like that, you would be able to look it up and find out interesting factoids like in that game, Ronnie Gant hit leadoff and played 3B, Dave Justice entered the game as a pinch runner after Darrell Evans reached as a pinch hitter and then played left field, Geronimo Berroa hit seventh, played right field and went 3-5 with 2 RBI ?? I mean, Retrosheet has to be one of the greatest things since sliced bread.
I got off work this morning around 6:30 just in time to turn the radio on and hear the guy say “Hank Aaron refuses to rejoin the lineup to help the team and milwakee won’t take the tean back but everything else is fine..”
Before you worry about the WC, don’t you think the first goal would be to get to .500?
we now have officially begun “the worst to first 2” campaign.
