I’ve had to block Blogspot.com domains from commenting. This is a temporary measure, but there are a bunch of spammers using Blogspot domains and until they’re stopped I’ve got to stop them on this end. It sucks, but I’m tired of cleaning up the mess.
So, if you’re commenting, you’ve got to remove your domain for now. And if you’re trackbacking, thanks but you’re stuck.
I’m going to keep the block up until next Tuesday, then see what happens when I take it off. They’re usually pretty good about stopping these guys, but there have to have been more than a hundred domains involved.
what do you guys think about acquiring chris shelton from the tigers? they seem to have a logjam at first. i liked watching him last year. what would it take? he SURE wouldnt win a beauty contest, but he can play some baseball.
I like Shelton, but he’s (1) completely not the type of player the Braves have pursued, and (2) a lot like the Jurries/Thorman pair they already have.
I deleted the Mets fan’s last comment, but it was a doozy and I kind of regret it now. My God, was this a moronic post. Danny at his dumbest couldn’t have done better. I particularly love how he’s never heard the phrase “knuckle-dragging” (Google reports 174,000 hits), brags about his intelligence, and comes up with the following misspellings:
Bravo, “DJ Cool Breez”. Word (to your mother, in whose basement you dwell.)
I hope more Met fans come and talk shit all season long
Wait… is the Mets fan actually for real? I.e., not Stu in drag or something? I thought he was like the bogeyman, or good-tasting lite beer, or women who leave the seat up–way too good to be true.
He’s actually for real?
Stu doesn’t do drag. But he does enjoy insulting said illiterate Mets fan.
“Illiterate Mets fan” . . . is that the same as a round circle.
Disco Stu doesn’t advertise
Where I live, insulting over-aggressive Mets fans is an everyday task. I never start the conversation, but my knives are always sharpened.
Did anyone watch the Korea/Taiwan game last night? The Korean fans started doing the Tomahawk Chop!
And the Japan/China game was horrible. 18-2. Yikes. Through some technicality, the mercy rule didn’t kick in until the 9th, I believe, but I think in this case, an exception should have been made.
Jenny! I thought I was going insane (some would concur since I stayed up to watch the Korea v. Taiwan game on tape delay and kept on through live Japan v. China, making it an all-nighter).
I swore that I heard faint strains of the Tomahawk chant multiple times during the Korea v. Taiwan game, but wasn’t certain. I’m taking your mention of it as corroboration.
Oh, one more thing. The Japanese starter, Koji Uehara, looked like a Tim Hudson clone. He had the exact same pitching motion. I mean, it was so uncanny that it took all of one pitch for me to make the connection.
If y’all aren’t watching, you are missing out. I’ll try to post a little recapish thing later today. I was more entertained than I even thought I’d be.
My biggest beef with the WBC is that it isn’t real competition, mostly due to the enforced pitch counts.
Tell me, did any pitcher have to leave the game in the middle of a count to a batter?
Most of the Mets fans I know are pretty humble and expect the Braves to always win. But I’m not in New York.
Here in my office (15 mins from Shea via LIRR), humble is in the distinct minority.
Most Met fans generally have “Little Brother Syndrome.” In the long shadow of the Yankees & taking constant abuse from the Braves, Met fans are always attempting to justify their very existence. That’s why they go out of their way to make noise, even when they lose.
Of course, if they ever win, it’s unbearable. So, as a public service, I believe it’s the Braves’ duty to keep them down.
Actually, if a pitcher reaches the pitch count limit while facing a batter, he is allowed to finish pitching that at-bat before leaving the game.
For example if you get to pitch 60 as a starter, for a 2-0 count, you can stay to finish off the batter (or allow the go-ahead single as the Taiwanese pitcher did).
So pitchers are allowed to go beyond the limits slightly to complete the current at-bat.
I’ve been in New York for five years, and in my experience, Mets fans don’t particularly focus on beating the Braves each year. With the big offseasons they’ve had the last two or three years, fans get pretty excited, but that dies when they start losing. They’re certainly not as obsessed with us as we seem to be with beating them at times.
We all know that NY sports fans are very passionate, sometimes to the point of being obnoxious–but I find them pretty harmless overall. Boston fans are much worse.
i imagine a typical mets fan to be somewhat like kramer and newman on “Seinfeld”: stuck in ’86, hardcore fans yet easily turned when the losing begins, very unlikeable even by their own kind, ignorant, and arrogant. The “2nd spitter” episode makes me pee my pants. i have never been to N.Y. so i could be way off, but thats is how i envision a mets fan.
We must be seeing different Mets fans, because I’ve been here since 1990 & if a Mets fan even sees a Braves hat or shirt he usually starts seething. An unsolicited comment usually follows.
“thats” should be “that”. dont call the grammar police
I simply cannot wait for the season to start. I’m sitting here eating a hotlink waiting for the game to start on espn.
About the WBC: I looked and looked and looked for ESPN Deportes on directv, but couldn’t find it. I swear I’ve seen it on dtv before, but alas I could not find it last night so I gave up. A friend of mine in oklahoma said he had it on some local station for whatever reason. I would of liked to watch it but didn’t want to wait till the replay came on considering I was supposed to have class this morning (canceled)
That’s possible, but since moving here, I’ve been to at least one game at Shea with some sort of Braves gear on, and have never been bothered, physically or verbally.
Most fans I know here do hate the Braves, but this winter so far for example, I’ve seen and heard more general statements like “best line-up in the NL” or “team to beat in the East” as opposed to “finally beating Atlanta.” That’s all my point was.
I also have no idea what a Met fan might say to a Braves fan that would be of any consequence.
I miss Ted Turner. Now there was an owner who was willing to take one for the team.
Wow that is great about Ted!
My best Met fan story is a few years ago I was at the Ted for a game vs. the Mets. We were up by two or three runs when who ever was pitching for the Braves struck out Piazza. We cheered. The next inning the same pitch gave up a double to (I think Floyd) and this Met fan turns around and starts yelling at us, telling us how the Braves suck. I pointed at the score board. The next inning the Met fan yelled “You suck Larry!” at Chipper, whom went yard and the Braves pulled away. I yelled, “Way to go Larry!” It was good for a laugh in the section.
Gammo had this to say on ESPn.com
“The Braves are already admitting how much they will miss Julio Franco, and are in the market for a right-handed-hitting first baseman to fill in for Adam LaRoche.”
Anyone know when Chuck James is supposed to pitch today? We have espn in the office but I can’t just skip out and watch the whole game 🙂
Smitty,
I had a similar experience in Philly with JD Drew a couple years ago.
Announcer: Now batting for the Braves…JD Drew.
Fans, especially those near me behind the Braves dugout: Unrepeatable epithets regarding Drew’s heritage, relatives, sexuality, etc.
First pitch to Drew: A long home run deep to right field.
The smattering of Braves fans all rose & cheered, acknowledging one of those “Hey-that-was-pretty-cool” moments. Meanwhile, the Philly fans were given another in a series of self-loathing opportunities.
I would like to break down other teams fans.
Braves: Many are not baseball savy (outside of this message board, ofcourse) Usually repectful of other fans.
Mets: Know things about their team and think everyone else sucks. Really rude.
Red Sox: Full of themselves. They think they are a cult or something.
Yankees: Much like Mets fans, but their team wins, which makes it worse.
Cards: Know the game and are usually classy, except to Cub Fans
Cubs: much like Red Sox fans, but look for gloom and doom, like Sox fans use to.
Marlins: Don’t have any
John Schuerholz was just on with today’s spring training broadcast crew and said that we were looking for a guy who could platoon at 1B and play some LF.
How about 1B/LF Craig Wilson of the Pittsburgh Pirates? Wouldn’t he be a perfect fit? He’d also seem to be available as the Pirates acquired Sean Casey and Jeromy Burnitz in the offseason.
Buy low. The guy is capable of .850-.900 OPS.
Schuerholz also added that he’s looking for a guy “who can pinch hit like Julio Franco.”
How about Diaz? he’s on the team already.
Ga. Southern was just upset by Appy. St. in the SoConn Tournament.
What about Andy marte, I bet he can play first. Oh wait.
Cary,
Nice one. .851 career OPS.
And right on time, Diaz smokes a 2 run homer.
Matt Diaz’s two-run homer…Exciting. Up until now, if this game were an SAT analogy, Braves pitchers:Jane Fonda::Dodgers hitters:Ted Turner.
Yeah, I know it doesn’t matter. But I like to win.
Hmm. Or make that Braves pitchers:Dodger hitters::Jane Fonda:Ted Turner. It’s been too long since I’ve taken a standardized test…
to those who are watching: who’s pitching and how has everyone done? i saw thomson get hit around in the first but have been working since. is chuck james getting ready yet?
Did I hear the announcer correctly that Marcus Giles is not at the game because his new baby is having problems? I couldn’t tell if it was him or someone else in his family, the volume was too low. Either one is terrible, but if it’s his baby again, when is the good Lord going to decide he’s suffered enough already?
was away for a while. bottom of 6th now. baker pitching. james probably up next.
remlinger looked awful, so have thomson and obermueller. baker looking better. Diaz making an horrible error in the OF. maybe he is better off at first.
hitters : HR for Diaz and lil jonny. noone looking that great. horrible K for salty. tony pena looked worse than a pitcher
yea, I thought everyone knew it was his baby which had held him up. oh well. best wishes to his family
Well, I’m kind of out of the loop on Braves news; nothing much has been happening so I stopped checking. How long has this been going on?
I want to compliment Jonny Jr. on his HR, but that pitch was big and fat and right down the middle. I think missing it would have made a bigger statement.
Jose Guillen is down for three months with a wrist injury. Who will finish with a worse record, Washington or Florida? It does not look like either team can avoid 100 losses at this point…
We definitely don’t want Nick Johnson — he seems to be a carrier.
God, poor Marcus. This is wrong.
What is wrong with Marcus’s kid?
James pitches an underwhelming innings. his outs, 2 pop flies n 1 pop up
he didn’t have his fb today
Wow, flyball pitcher comes as advertised. Did he give up any hits or runs?
Saltlamachiaaaaaaaa
That was quite an AB. 3-run GW HR.
LaRoche better keep a close count of his tail feathers, because Salty’s right on his heels.
Actually, Smitty, I actually have a good friend who’s a Marlins fan. Not too hardcore–his hardcore passions are Miami football and Duke basketball–and after this offseason he doesn’t really know who’s on the roster anymore, but I just wanted you to know there’s at least one.
I almost feel bad for him that they’re going to lose a hundred games.
Salty with the walk-off!!! Wahooooooo!
Should I be this excited for a Spring Training game? Oh well…
Well, it’s official: Braves lose, 7-5 to the Dodgers, final score. Jeez, ESPN’s dumb.
Omigod, two straight losses to begin the exhibition season. Time to panic. It’s amazing that someone can diss someone that hits homerun by saying, oh well the ball was fat and down the middle. He still had to hit it. How many home runs are hit off pitches down and away. Jenny, do you have any idea whatsoever what you are talking about?
In the SoConn Tournalment Chattanooga upst College of Charleston with a bucket with 3 seconds left
Uh, Marc? We won. The Salty Dogg hit a three run walkoff bomb.
I’ve had to block Blogspotdotcom domains from commenting.
I never liked those dirty blogspotters anyway.
Not usually, Marc.
Smitty,
I, too, know of only one hardcore Marlins fan. He’s a recovering Met fan who switched allegiences when he moved to Broward County.
When I was walking out of a very quiet Yankee Stadium after Game 6 of the ’03 World Series, I called him & left a congratulatory message. He tells me that my message is still on his answering machine.
That said, mark ’em down for 90 losses.
Okay, here’s my promised WBC item.
So I got home late last night and decided to stay up to catch a little WBC action between Korea and Taiwan on tape delay (1:30 a.m.). Well, I couldn’t turn away and it rolled right into the live action of Japan vs. China at 4:30 a.m. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it, so here are 5 quick things about each game.
GAME 1 Korea vs. Taiwan (Chinese-Taipei) Final: Korea 2 Taiwan 0
1. A New Game — Right off the bat (haha), you recognize Asian baseball and how it’s played differently from the game over here. The first Korean batter reaches and then the second batter… bunts him to second. The second batter of the game! I think Billy Beane had an aneurysm at that moment. That, my friends, is small ball. Very interesting.
2. It Matters — The enthusiam and effort of the players was fantastic. Korean clean-up batter Dong Joo Kim, who was noticeably more stout than most Korean players, hit a grounder to short with a man on 2B, and he nearly killed himself trying to beat it out. At full speed, he dove into first base head-first with what is probably one of the worst slides I’ve ever seen. Or course, he had to leave the game with an injured shoulder, but the effort was there, even if the technique and correct choice wasn’t.
3. Prospects on Stage — Taiwanese relief pitcher Po-Hsuan Keng (an Single A Toronto Blue Jays prospect) gave a good account of himself going 2 innings and only giving up 1 walk and getting 1 strikeout. He showcased a plus curve with major bite that was fun to watch. Never would have seen him without the WBC.
4. Old Faces/New Places — Chan Ho Park closed out the 2-0 win for Korea, getting the save for Jae Seo. Maybe that’s where Park should land to be worth anything in MLB again. He made it interesting though, getting bailed out by a great defensive play that saved a run and would have put the tying run in scoring position.
5. History — I’m glad I got to see the opening game of World Baseball Classic I. I love the carnival atomosphere of international competitions, and I swear (and it was confirmed on Mac’s Braves message board) that there were faint Braves/FSU Tomahawk chants on several occasions. I don’t know why. It was tough to make out anyway among the constant horns, drums, clapping and activity of the crowd. Very fun.
GAME 2 Japan vs. China Final: Japan 18 China 2
—-
1. Double Vision — They’ve done it. The Japanese have cloned Tim Hudson! Japanese starter Koji Uehara has the exact same pitching delivery as the Braves ace. I mean, it was so uncanny that it took me all of one pitch to make the connection. He finished 5 innings with 6Ks and 0 BBs, giving up a 2-run HR and getting the win.
2. David v. Goliath — While the game was eventually called for mercy, it was a competitive 2-2 into the 5th. One of the more amusing early game moments was when Chinese captain SS Yufeng Zhang was so intent on getting the upset that his helmet came flying right off as he swung through a Uehara pitch in the 2nd inning. It went spinning off his head and he whirled around and caught it. I’m sure he had visions of sending that one through the Tokyo Dome roof.
3. Big Play — With two outs and Japan looking to add to a 2-0 lead, Japanese 2B Tsuyoshi Nishioka took a lead off first. Nishioka was a perfect 41 for 41 in stolen base attempts for Bobby Valentine’s Japanese League champions. Everyone in the building knew he was going to steal, but China’s not the most talented team and catcher is a difficult position for even MLB teams to fill. Sure enough, Nishioka took off. Chinese catcher Wei Wang fired a strike to 2B to nail Nishioka, ending the inning and the threat. Awesome.
4. Wei Wong is Way Right! — Making his bid for Player of the Game, Chinese C Wei Wang takes Uehara deep for a 2-run HR to tie the game at 2-2. It was the first homerun in WBC history (obviously).
5. Tsuyoshi Strikes Back — A half-inning later in the top of the 5th, Japanese 2B Tsuyoshi Nishioka gets redemption for his caught stealing, hitting a 3-run HR to put his team up for good. CF Kosuke Fukudome follows to make it back-to-back HRs and the rout is on. Well, it was fun while it lasted.
Anyway, I figured I’d enjoy seeing the Dominican’s and Venezuelas and even the Cubas of the World Baseball Classic, but I was surprised how much I enjoyed watching teams made up largely of unfamiliar players.
Since most of you probably missed it, there you go. Enjoy.
Does anyone else listen to Steve Philips evaluate Braves players and cringe a little if you agree with his assessment, particularly if it is positive? I consider him to be something of a jinx after his time with the Mets, like his personnel assessments and opinions can’t possibly be right and get a little worried. Similar to the way I feel when I find myself agreeing with Sean Salisbury (although he has gotten better at his job as he’s gone on). I consider Philips to be the Anti-Gammons for me.
That was excellent, Cary! I don’t get TV in my dorm, so it’s great to hear about the WBC. You’ve got me excited to the point where I might try to head out with some friends one night and watch a few games! If you want to post any more reports, they’d be greatly appreciated. ;-D
wow it’s funny how upset I have gotten all you. what a bunch of losers.Like I have said before, dont be mad at me that your team will finish in last place in our division. I really do regret being nice in my last post. I am just busting your balls no need to take it personal. But one more thing I just have to mention. It’s pretty sad That I argue and make fun of the content of what your saying and all you people can come up with is that A) I live with my parents which is extreamly funny since I have been out of my parents house now for 3 years, so just realize that when you say that you make your self look absolutely retarded. B) all you can come up with is that I have poor spelling- which is true, But does not reflect on my intellegence. I think that shows by the way I Have made some of you look-EXTREAMLY BAD, which i must say is not all that hard!!!!
KNUCKLE DRAGGING–must be a new word that the special edd classes are teaching in school these days. What do you expect with all the insest that goes down around there.
Cheers
Dan
Hey! He spelled retarded correctly, but not intelligence. Hmmmm…
in the first comment section of “this is not a recap”- my bet still stands you country bumpkins
again all you braves fans can do is make fun of my spelling, thats because you have been beat so badly in everY aspect of our discussion thats all you can say back to me. Pathetic really, learn to stick up for your self, Im calling you all retarded, your parents are related, your losers, and all you can say back is that you spell bad, It’s all most unfair for me to pick on you.
NOW GO AHEAD AND DELETE THIS POST AS WELL SO OTHERS DONT SEE HOW BAD I’M MAKING YOU LOOK. THATS WHAT HAPPEND LAST TIME RIGHT.
This Chinese team is horrible.
For me, I was able to order the digital cable “Latino Tier” that includes ESPN Desportes for $4 a month. That gets prorated, though, so it only costs like $2 to get the channel for the length of the WBC.
The Chinese are the New York Mets of the WBC.
HEY, no stealing my name, lol
OK, I don’t really know what I’m watching, but some people are talking about the Braves on CSS, and some dude just said that he thinks Davies will win a rotation spot and that we’ll see Thomson pitching out of the bullpen. I finally got around to laughing after the shock of “Did I really just hear that?” wore off. Wow, Big Red out of the ‘pen. Just when you think you’ve heard it all.
at least that was funny, and you actually had to think for that one.
just out of curiosity how many of you support the W.B.C ?
I definitely support the WBC in principle, but I think the timing of it was clearly terrible–they should have talked to the players FIRST, and not suffered the public relations debacle of seeing player after player pull out.
But I’m still convinced that you’re too good to be true, NY METS. Tehre’s noway yur spelings taht bad! Yur laik Dany Klobb Jnuior!
14 straight division titles and all this dude can talk about is an offseason with a 34 year old as their big signing. Shoot, even Bret Boone wouldn’t play for them!
I’m really kidding though; the Mets have had a good offseason. I think this will be one of the more close races in the past decade. I think it all kinda rests with Smoltz and Pedro though…
agreed rob. when those to pitchers are on its fun just to watch them take control of a game. I for one am not the biggest fan of this W.B.C. I guess I just realy dont want to see anyone get hurt over this thing. And it will happen no doubt. I just hope it’s no one from my mets as im sure you feel the same for the braves. the mets have 11 players involved in this thing so as u can guess im a little worried. how many for the braves?
Back on the spelling hu? lol.
now imagine if all of a sudden I was to spell correctly. You wouldn’t even believe it’s really me. So I now have to spell incorrectly regardless of if I can spell or not.
Say what you want about Mets fans being obnoxious etc..but how many professional baseball teams do you know of that couldnt sellout a playoff game at home where the opposing pitcher was Roger FREAKIN Clemens!. I was there for the game in question last year and frankly its getting beyond embarrassing how little this city seems to care about the Braves. They put out a quality product year in year out without having to resort to spending millions on mercenaries in the free agent market but there doesnt seem to be much respect for that nowadays. We are lucky to have a class organization like that for us to support…we need to start acting like it instead of making fun of other fanbases…especially when they show more passion for teams that havent won diddly-squat in years than atlanta does for its team.
I can’t wait until that Japan-U.S. second round match now. They’ll probably play in the semis, too.
I wonder how many of these guys would be in the bigs if not for the Player Contract Agreement.
That being please continue to make fun of this jackass NYMet…i just read some of his posts 🙂
i dont think telling this blog that atlanta is not supportive is “new” news. everyone here is what i would call “overly supportive” of our team. we’ve had discussions that the majority of the blog doesnt think it is the city, but rather the location of the ballpark. not many locals can walk to the games, unlike many other stadiums. you yell at the blog for making fun of the mets organization, but then you turn around and say to continue doing it (walking contradiction). i, for one, love the braves, but it is very frustrating at times to be a braves fan (just like any other team). i would go to every game if i could, but it is not possible. alot of braves fans are out of town people that have to rely on televised broadcasts.
Joey, nobody knows exactly how good the Japanese team is. Remember Tokyu Dome is not exactly a major league size ballpark, and that’s one of the reason why people had doubt about Matsui’s power before his first season with the Yankees. China and Taiwan are never expected to provide much competition against Japan and South Korea as China and Taiwan are generations behind Japan and Korea in terms of baseball history. I guess we will know more about the ability of the Japanese and Korean when they play in the later rounds.
Not only is it impossible to walk to the games, but MARTA sucks and doesnt have enough convenient stations, and evening traffic on our rediculously overcrowded roads makes even driving to the game a chore.
that being said dix, it can never be a “spur of the moment” type decision to go to a braves game. the difference in a cards fan wanting to go to a game and a braves fan wanting to go to a game is as follows: (conversation 1) 7:30 AM- jim says, “Hey, lets go to a braves game tonight”.
(conversation 2)pat- 6:00 pm- “hey, lets go the the cards game tonight”. braves game has to be planned. i lived in st. louis on several occasions, and i have been to a game where i made the decision to go 30 minutes beforehand.
furthurmore, i lived 15 minutes from the stadium, drove there, parked, walked in (on a crowded night), and still made it for opening pitch. that couldnt happen at a braves game.
Even so, NY METS is prophesizing the Braves’ demise, so what does that have to do with our attendance?
So what if the Mets support their team better than we do? All that means is that the parade of terrible GMs the Mets have had have more money to spend on the Mo Vaughns of the world…
Well, I think Braves fans are just as loyal as NY Mets fans. It’s just that there are a whole lot more Mets fans and a higher percentage live within, say, an hour of their stadium. Braves fans are scattered all around the south-east, not to mention the entire country thanks to TBS. It’s one thing to go to a Mets game from somewhere withing the NYC, but to go to a Braves game when you live in North Carolina or Florida or Tenessee or something…. It’s a frickin road trip!
wasnt directed toward NY METS rob. read the posts from nirj
Discussing attendance is simply a mechanism to avoid discussing baseball, a conversation many NL fans seem perfectly willing to avoid.
a few things: yes there are many more METs fans then braves fans, we all know that even though our team is usually much worse then the braves, and we don’t have a national run t.v station like tbs broadcasting our games to other parts of the country-(go figure that one out.) I Think the only reason why METs fans are more into their team then the braves is for the simple fact that we are not spoiled every year as you are. when we have a great season it is rare and METs fans come out the wood work to support our team. You guys are kinda like the Yankees. You expect to win every year and you do, so it kind of takes the fun out of the whole thing. in a sense you almost get board with the team. Not all of you but for the casual run of the mill braves fan. I can see that in this blog you guys take the braves seriously and I respect that honestly, It’s just Up north baseball is taken more seriously then any where else. the yanks, sox and METs are 1.2, and three in spending every year because we have the fan base to support it. Southern teams usually do not draw as well. On another point, there are a lot of METs fans all over America, people get relocated from their jobs in NYC all the time, I know a lot of miss placed METs fans, And we don’t have the luxury of having a t.v station like tbs to broadcast all over. so that not a very solid statement that braves fans are scattered all over so that’s why they can’t show up and support your team. Plus we also have two teams in one city and we are clearly not the favorite team and I bet we still beat you in attendance.
Dan
mets dude-
numbers don’t mean squat, unless we’re talking consecutive post-season appearances. give it a rest.
besides, these attendance numbers you speak of…you’re flat-out wrong. i’ve been to your hellhole of a stadium and i’ve seen it with my own eyes. in fact, on the cloudiest of days i had to wear sunglasses to block out the orange reflections from the empty seats.
check the 2004 numbers on espn or any other reputable site.
shea: 61.3% of the seats sold
ted: 62.9%
in fact, of all the things you’ve said, the only thing that makes any sense is that you “know a lot of misplaced ( I correctly spelled it for you) METs fans…”
so do I, and you’re one of them.
sorry, Mr. Met. those are the 2005 percentages.
but while you’re checking them out, have a look at 2004.
it’s even more embarrassing.
i wonder if the braves have thought about signing a veteran to play some first and outfield….with some hitting experience…hmm maybe…sammy sosa? 1.5 mil? 1 year?
Yeah having the stadium in a more central location would probably help attendance, but there are quite a few stadiums out there that are hard to get to but still have good attendance; Dodger Stadium comes to mind(absolute nightmare getting there and back).
That being said Turner field still has huge advantages over your average ballpark. Tickets seem to be fairly cheap and there isnt a bad seat in the house, the views from even the nosebleeds are great. I was surprised when i saw games at Fenway and Yankee stadium. While i got a bit caught up in the sense of “history” of these venues, the overall experience was lacking. There was a stupid pole blocking part of my view at Yankee stadium and dont even get me started on Fenway park prices!
Yeah going to a Braves game might require a little more effort but you’d think that we could still overcome this come playoff time. Sadly its going to take a few losing seasons before ppl start appreciating how rare this kind of sustained excellence is in baseball today.
Not trying to start a war here, but Im a huge Braves fan and i felt really bad for our team as they had played thru an amazing season filled with injuries etc, and there were great storylines like Francoeur, Andruw, Smoltz and Sosa. Those guys and the whole team deserved a packed house…period
You did not just say Sammy Sosa. Please tell me you did not just say Sammy Sosa.
Jorge Sosa, Big D. This is a Braves site. Remember him?
Stu, check out TheSandman’s post, above the one by nirj. I’m not an idiot. (But maybe I should’ve made my reference a little clearer.)
Hey NY METS, remember that time the Mets won the NL East (after they split the division?) Yeah, me neither.
Matt In Boston:
Thank you for helping out my argument that much more.(what a dope)I did research the attendance for both teams. I wouldn’t be all bragging about a 1.6 percent difference. mind you we didnt win a division title or even make the playoffs. if we had done either of the two, we would have beat you with ease. Now as to what is embarrassing That my friend is you., If you spent a little less time trying to get the upper hand on me you would see the obvious truth that you are an embarrassment to your fellow braves fans as well as humanity. You must be a product of kissing cousins —Now I have been nice the last few posts, I respect your passion for your braves. It makes you true fans. I went out to bust some balls to see if you actually were real fans and you are for the most part so relax would you. I have no true beef. I am excited to see these 2 teams duke it out, it will be a great race this year. But I would be lying if I said the braves will Finnish ahead of the METs. ( If you don’t believe in your team to win then you are simply not a fan)- you had a nice run. Now it’s our turn
Big D:
Hey remember the last time you didn’t choke in the first round? The braves will go down as the biggest under achievers in all of sports, right next to the buffalo bills.
Sorry to the rest of the braves fans, I tried to stay civil
How would you rate the Mets level of achievement?
You’re right, Big D. It looks like I’M the idiot. Sorry about that.
NY METS, let’s get back to how I made fun of your spelling and grammar. See if you can understand this reasoning:
You can’t spell or create a coherent sentence. People who can’t spell and can’t create a coherent sentence are not smart. People who are not smart make bad arguments. You make bad arguments. (See: The Braves are underachievers–yep, it’s one word–despite their consistent dominance of a team with a much higher payroll and, at least according to you, a much better group of fans cheering them on.)
I’m sure you’ll fail to understand what I said (again), so this is for the benefit of the regulars on this site, that they might appreciate your ignorance all the more.
NY METS,
how old are you? i predict 12. any more predictions from the loyals? i am a 4th grade teacher, and his mechanics cant be much better than my students.
and nirj, what you’re saying doesnt relate to walk-up attendance. the price of beer in china? who cares..as long as its easy to obtain.
ububba, since when has attendance not been an issue for the braves organization? yes, it has nothing to do with baseball, but until you have been on the field and can feel the impact of what a a sold out, wild stadium has to offer, compared to what we have seen the past few years, then it will be an issue, No matter what NL fans have to say. by the way, how did our team do, and i think i drank too much tonight. 🙂
added, i never played past high school baseball, so i cant tell you what a big crowd feels like since the largest crowd i have played in front of was probably 14. yes, i contradict myself, so it is time to shut up. good night.
Hey NY METS, remember your run last year in the playoffs? I do! You got put out by the 9-10 year old Dodgers down at the little league feild

This has GOT to be one of the most amusing and entertaining things I’ve read on here, and I’ve been reading just about every word, with very little posts, for about two years now.
Speaking of two years, I remember repeatedly getting in trouble in my computer class during my junior year of high school(shows my age) because I was reading Braves Journal. I love this place…
(Consider that a testimonial…)
Ryan c:
Let me get this straight, your a drunken fourth grade teacher-real nice. It’s hard to be offended by a drunk teacher, sorry. Don’t worry about my spelling, worry about you getting some AA, Don’t you “teach your 4th grade class” to stay on topic when in a discussion? What exactly do you teach? oh let me guess the sex scenes in broke back mountain to your male students.
And stu:
I do have the best arguments. All you can say to me is spelling and grammar- not even related to the topic at hand, (baseball).you just argue with your self and I find it amusing. Stop playing with your self and get laid or something. Maybe Ryan C will hook you up with some hot 4th graders, you can have all the little girls since he will be busy playing grab ass with all the boys.
This will be my last post until the season starts. Good luck to your braves.
To The few retards in this web site. You live up to the southern hype, your white trash. hill Billy, inbred, hicks. And what’s even more funny is that all by myself I was able to make any that argued me look like a damn fool. you would think that the 7-8 of you would be able to defend your self and make at least one good argument against me but you couldn’t. This so called ” 12 year old ” took your man hood away from you and I made you look bad in your own web site. All I can say is I feel sorry for you. IM not angry with you, I just feel bad. It’s like me beating someone up in a wheel chair. Feel free to talk about me while IM gone if it helps you feel like a man again. Maybe it will help with your self confidence. I’ll take it as a compliment when you mention me—It shows I affected you that much you need to talk about me while IM gone and can’t defend myself just to cope with your own short comings.
Cheers
Dan
My family lives about an hour from Turner Field. What should be an easy drive to the stadium is made next to impossible because of traffic. I actually have two games marked on my calendar for next year….both of them 1:05 starts. Those games are easy to get to traffic wise, both coming and going. I didn’t realize that until last year when I finally went to an afternoon game and had a blast.
The playoffs are another story. I can afford regular season games (a family of 5 can go pretty cheap…we bring our own food and drinks, so all we pay are tickets and parking. If you walk up and get the $1 seats, my family can go to a game for a whopping $15….tickets and parking). I looked at going to a playoff game last year, and there was no way I could afford to go. The prices were ridiculous.
All of this to say that this is exactly what has driven me to Rome. I drive an hour and a half to get to Rome, but it’s easy, cheap (my entire family gets in and sits almost behind home plate for $18), parking costs $2, and they have a kids menu, so we all eat from that and refill our drinks at the water fountains. We went to 15 or 20 games in Rome last year MAINLY because of the ease of getting to and from the stadium. If Turner Field was as easy to get to, I’d be there as often, if not more, than Rome, and I’d be willing to bet that place would fill up on a regular basis.
Just my 2 cents….
I didn’t see NY METS make nay comments about baseball, he just insulted us for being from the south (like that is an insult) Oh well.
