Sorry about that. If you didn’t get one of the messages I sent out it was a database error. These pop up but are usually easily fixed. For some reason, this one wasn’t. At least it was an off day.

Well, the Mets hung on and beat the Reds 3-2. So we start the second half 2 1/2 games back.
Dave Rowe OUT as color analyst for Lincoln-Financial Sports football.
A moment of silence for Dave Rowe (being replaced by David Archer, who’s done some Falcons work)
..
..
May the phrase “Big man on big man” never be uttered again.
Carry on.
And, of course, he’s replaced by another Dave.
If we had played a game tonight we would have won it.
Well, the Braves have at least won our hearts & minds. Let’s hope they win a game tomorrow.
Just curious Mac, when can we start up the 2007 College Football Preview?
I want dibs on Auburn.
I still can’t figure out why comments on pages aren’t working. I might have to do it on another site.
stu,
while i knew my other nut would command quite a price, i’m flattered that it’s value has swelled, and its seed may spawn the braves’ world series birth. 😉
I’ve set up another WordPress.com blog at http://secpreviews.wordpress.com/. If you want to do a preview, leave a message or email me and I’ll send an invite. I don’t know exactly how those work.
Sweet.
Can’t wait to read everyone’s contributions.
Also, I would like a “Tool” option in the poll.
/or weasel…
Julio Franco anyone???
Here we go Again…Mark Cuban interested in Buying the CUBS??http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2934920
Mark Cuban interested in starting some football league??…what is Mark Cuban not interested in??? i guess he needs something to do in the offseason. Come on Buy the Braves Mark!!!
Thank god the All-Star Break is finally over. It is the second worst time of the year for sports, after the entire month of February. I will be at the game tonight so I am excited. I heard Ian Snell and Hudson will be pitching tonight. Let’s hope we can start the second half the same way we started the beginning of the season.
Next Story on Associated Press:
“Mark Cuban interested in buying some class & a shred of dignity. Apparently, not for sale.”
Cuban stinks, and he’s a loathsome, obnoxious jackel. A pimple on the a– of humanity.
Guess what, despite all his nasty, snide, below the belt comments about San Antonio, and the last time I checked, 4 rings for the Spurs, NONE for the Mavericks.
This is the same so called human being who just tried to file a lawsuit against Don Nelson because the Warriors essentially knew that Dirk Nowitzki couldn’t go to his left. The whole free world knows Dirk can’t go left.
I hope he buys the Cubs…then we can have another 99 years of them not winning a world series.
Mac,
Could I contribute with another Hokies preview?
Alex,
Not a big fan of Cuban I take it? I feel that way about “the fat man” Phil Fulmer.
Irregardless of how you feel about Cuban, the braves would be lucky to have him buy the team. Look what he’s done for the Mav’s.
Kenny,
yes…Cubes is on that same list with guys like Fat Fulmer (we agree–I hate him as well), LaRussa, Joe Morgan et all.
Land-
That’s a tougher one for me personally as I am as much a Spurs fan as I am a Braves fan, and have grown to hate Cuban for his antics and nasty remarks.
That being said, I wasn’t a huge fan of some of the non Baseball related things about Ted Turner, BUT, I would take him back in a second.
So yes, I would love an owner, any owner, with an open checkbook again.
If we want a new owner, my wishlist would be someone who has a passion for the Braves to win. Cuban would throw money at the problem, but if would be annoying to watch him sitting next to Bobby in the dugout and screaming at the home plate umpire.
The Mavs were on par with the Hawks, Cuban made them into a decent contender.
By the way, Tim Cowlishaw and Bill Plaschke stole my joke yesterday.
They faced one another in the final showdown on “Around the Horn” and each did a ‘Rickey Henderson talking in the 3rd person about how great Rickey Henderson is” joke.
It was funny, yes, but I beat them to the punch.
By the way, when Cuban wanted to throw a lawsuit at Don Nelson (the most frivolous and embarrasing lawsuit since the women who sued McDonald’s for her spilling hot coffee) he should have hired James Sokolove.
I mean, I hear Sokolove’s commercials all the time…sounds like a great bargain, Cubes…YOU FREAKING NUTBAG.

If I am censored by Mac for going political, I apologize. However, Alex R. just repeated a myth that is far beyond the realm of real and its re-telling is causing tremendous repercussions every day. I am a lawyer, but I do not make a living (or even a little bonus) out of injury cases. I am also predominantly Republican and agree with some (but not many) of the tort “reforms”.
At the time of the “infamous coffee spilling lawsuit” McDonald’s was maintaining its coffee temperature in its “tanks” at 160 degrees (commercial dishwashers operate at this termperature). All of its competitiors (Hardees, Wendy’s, etc._ were maintaining their coffee at 130 to 135 degrees. McDonald’s reasoning for this was apparently that they could fill up several coffee cups at a time, put them on the counter, and then still seve them hot.
Most hot water heaters are set at 130 to 135 degresss to avoid bacteria. Most energy saving guides say ot lower this to 110 to 115 (I don’t recommend it. Note the bacteria). If you have ever used a whirlpool, you will know that trying to hold your ankle in 115 degree water is VERY difficult. I can stand 110 fine (but it is HOT). Every degree over that, you can feel.
The lady in question did spill the coffee. I have had things handed through the window with poorly applied lids that I know I didn’t cause the spill. However, even if the spill was her fault, why should they put something that hot in a container?
The burns completely burned off (3rd degree burs) all vaginal tissue, skin, and abdominal muscle down to the peritineum. It was the substantial equivalent to her body of having a cup full of burning napalm splashed in her lap.
McDonald’s deserved a lot worse than what they got for that.
Jay10–
Don’t let me down on the VT preview. Although, simply bashing Glennon would be enough to satisfy me. I wish we could throw shit at him from the student section in Lane.
And we had the phrase “vaginal tissue” used on bravesjournal. What a good day.
Alex R: The Dugout also went with the Rickey 3rd Person joke (http://dugout.progressiveboink.com/archive/jon129.html).
Cliff, I had never heard that the McD’s coffee spilling was that bad. However, isn’t there a point where as a human being you have to take personal responsibility. She ordered a “hot” coffee and got a “hot” coffee.
I’m tired of having to click I agree when i get into a car that has navigation. It’s upsurd that if that warning isn’t there someone is going to sue the car company for crashing it while using the navigation. Over litigation and political correctness are going to be the downfall of America . . . and add given kids in little league that finish last a medal to that list as well.
maybe thats what we should say every time Bobby makes a dumb decision.
Vaginal Tissue
happy friday the 13th also
Joshtothemax:
As a fellow Hokie I agree with the Glennon post. He is servicable, but terribly boring and average. When is Tyrod going to get a chance to step it up?
Sorry, to all you SEC folks. I know you think the ACC is a bunch of trash.
“”Cliff, I had never heard that the McD’s coffee spilling was that bad.””
yep it was
“”She ordered a “hot” coffee and got a “hot” coffee””
exactly right
“”Over litigation and political correctness are going to be the downfall of America””
agree 100%, but it needs to go to another thread!
He started it! (lol). I apologize and I’ll let it go. It just got me a little fired up. Back to baseball.
JDMaker-
A BIG amen to your post. Over litigation and political correctness are two things I can’t stand and yes, both are the downfall of this culture…I say that and I am not even a Republican (or a Democrat).
Like the obese people who file lawsuits against the airlines because the airlines make them buy 2 seats. Boo hoo.
EAT A SALAD, PEOPLE.
Honestly, as someone who’s parents & brother are diabetic (though my family is not obese, just had bad habits for too long) and sees what a grossly overweight country this is, I am continually amazed that there are obese people in this country who want to blames other for their inability to put the damned snickers bar down. It drives me batty.
This show that Shaq is doing, he and the trainer are right…they aren’t helping these kids lose weight, they are trying to save their lives for goodness sakes. It’s downright disturbing to me to see obese children. And if their parents need two seats, they should absolutely be charged two seats. And consider a diet.
Any idea whether the Braves are going to make a roster move today? They’re still carrying 13 pitchers, and I figure the bullpen doesn’t need anymore relief with the 4 day break.
I propose sending Devine down (since it doesn’t seem like Cox wants to use him) and bringing up Pena. Then give Salty the chance to start at 1B every day.
Plus, look at Pena’s splits for June and July: http://tinyurl.com/26qp6p
One last comment on Mickey D’s:
McDonalds had been informed of the dangers of the coffee temparature a number of times before. In fact, they had settled 7 suits caused by spilled coffee. The reason the jury gave the award it did was a McDonalds memo stating that the costs associated with settling any future suits outweighed the risks of continuing the 160 degree coffee, much like Ford did with the Pinto decision (although, obviously not as life-threatening).
And the jury decided the punitive damages would be equal to about two days of coffee sales.
Now, I’m not advocating either position, but the jury did have a reason (whether it is one you may agree with or not) for rendering that verdict.
NOW…back to more important things….
I heard from the Ass’t Manager at the chik-Fil-A I went to this morning, that his neighbor’s cousin mows Schuerholz’s chauffeur’s lawn that a trade is in the works:
Unfortunately, I have no imagination, so I’ll leave it up to you guys to fill it in. 🙁
I say we send down Devine also, Bobby has shown he wont use him in any situation. I have a bad feeling we might get Orr again. I want Pena to come up also, at least he’s a switch hitter and can give us better Ab’s off the bench compared to Woodward?
Pena was playing LF in Richmond every game that I went to (about 4). Which I thought was somewhat odd. He played fairly well though it was in a Matt Diaz awkward manner.
if a trade is made, I kind of doubt me make a big move, it had better be for a SP, not a Salty for Teixiera trade
I think DOB does a solid job reviewing the first half for the Braves and forecasting the 2nd half:
http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/braves/stories/2007/07/12/0713brvmidseason.html
The only area where I would really disagree is the Wild Card situation. The teams in the East are close enough to the teams in the west, that the WC winner could still be the Braves or Mets.
Plus, a stat DOB left out was that the Braves WON the season series against both San Diego and L.A. meaning we have the tie breaker if we finish with the same records.
I really hate Mets fans and ESPN. All of them are talking about Milledge and his speed this morning. How much he brings to the club and how they’re so much better off with him over Franco. His speed won them a victory yesterday and you cant teach that! makes me want to puke, this guy is overrated
csg-
I completely agree; even with a substandard performance from Andruw, I think there is enough offense on this team to compete. The key missing ingredient at this point is 1 more quality starting pitcher.
I think we should bring Julio Franco back and cut Woodward.
second the motion to bring back Julio.
Atl has 40% chance of isolated t-storms today and tonight
I do not think we should bring Franco back (unless he wants to be a bench coach or something) and cut Woodward.
41 – Woodward is useless. We have Prado who can come back up if need be. Harris and Escobar can play all infield positions. Diaz can also play 1b and so could Franco. bring him back..
I think the point is that when you ask for hot coffee, everyone–including others in the same industry–takes that to mean 30 degrees cooler than McDonald’s was providing.
That’s where the negligence comes in. And for the record, I’m about as anti-litigation as someone can get.
The profit motive is amoral (not immoral) by nature, and as such has no inherent code of ethics on which to rely vis a vis responsibility to those affected by its implementation. An enlightened steward realizes this, and makes an attempt to adhere to some civic-slash-cultural standards of responsibility on its way to the bank. An unenlightened one does not, and periodically requires a reminder from without that they do not operate in a vacuum.
In short — raise the payroll, Liberty!
I call Tennessee again, what is your email Mac?
Smitty’s barber’s barber told me the following trade rumor.
ATL: Teixeira, Griffey
CIN: Wilkerson, B. Pena
TEX: Saltalamacchia, W. Harris
That would be the greatest trade that has ever happened. We would have the best offense in the world…ever. We wouldnt need any pitchers because we would score 400 runs a game
Kevin Bacon told me about the following trade Rumor . . .
Mac,
You know I will handle Georgia again of course, but I can’t seem to log into WordPress.
Hey, Mac, I know this isn’t really an ACC-approved area (hahaha), but could you put up a blog too for the ACC Previews? I’d like to give Georgia Tech another shot and I’m sure it will be better this year.
Can’t help this but since people brought it up: maybe it’s not litigation that’s ruining America, maybe its irresponsible corporations that care about nothing but making an extra 10 cents and couldn’t care less what they do to the environment or who they hurt. Just a thought.
No more politics. I like Smitty’s barber’s rumor. Any word from his barber on whether Liberty would extend Teixera?
Marc,
You can’t make a blatant political statement (not that I necessarily disagree, I have a problem with major corporations as well) and in the same breadth say no more political discussion. Just saying 🙂
Alex,
Sorry. I meant no more politics from me. I did not mean to stifle anyone else. Apologies.
@54 – i.e. That’s it no one else can have the last word. 🙂
After looking at Brayan Pena’s monthly splits, bring him back up! Trade Thorman for Oswalt.
I even counted to 10, but couldn’t hold back. I apolgize.
I would argue that it’s irresponsible people who are depending on someone else, i.e. Corporate America, to protect them from everything. Americans have ceased to use their collective common sense and have a lack of personal responsiblity for the actions they take. A little aforethought goes a long way.
Notwithstanding that, Corporate America does have a responsibility to make their products as safe as possible, within reason. I assume you are just tring to make a point, but _”irresponsible corporations that care about nothing but making an extra 10 cents and couldn’t care less about what they do to the environement or who they hurt”_ is completely over generalized.
I think there is a median between stupid people and evil corporations. I’m not saying that some corporations aren’t bad, but I don’t think I need a warning on every product ever made.
I’ve set up another WordPress.com blog at http://secpreviews.wordpress.com/.
Over/under on the number of times the “killer SEC schedule” card is played: five per preview.
And I’m taking the over.
I’m glad DOB makes the case that KJ should return to the leadoff spot. I expect that Andruw and McCann will post better numbers during the second half, but that Willie Harris will regress. When that happens, hopefully Bobby will already have put KJ back at the top of the order…
and yes, the Braves are good enough to win the NL East. But only if they get another starter.
To sum it all up:
In this day and time nothing is my fault, everything is someone else’s fault. That kind of thinking drives me crazy!!!
Brayan Pena is the definition of a AAAA ball player.
pitching matchups
7/13 Hudson vs Snell
7/14 James vs Gorzelanny
7/15 Carlyle vs Maholm
7/16 Davies vs Harang per Atl website
7/16 Davies vs Livingston per ESPN
7/17 Arroyo vs Reyes
7/18 Harang vs Smoltz/Hudson
As a season ticket holder, I could do an Ole Miss one if y’all wanted me to but it will be quite depressing.
Sad are the days of the Ogerzook.
It looks like everyone will get to see how good Harang really is, if those pitching matchups hold up as listed above.
With the opportunity play the Pirates & Reds the next 3 days, the Braves absolutely must go 5-1 during this stretch. A great opportunity against two bad teams to remind the Mets and ESPN that we aren’t going anywhere.
I meant 6 days, whoops.
Playing the Pirates and Reds is what July is all about.
Smitty’s barber’s barber’s barber told me that Liberty media wouldn’t shell out the dough to extend Teixeira, but Griffey would graciously pay him out of his own pocket in order to win a World Series.
So everything will work out.
Harang is a #1 pitcher no matter how he pitches against us on that day. He’s 9-2 on the worst team in the NL, he’s got a 3.66 era in a hitters park, not to mention the defense behind him isnt all that great.
would anyone want Eric Brynes if Andruw bolts. His defense is top notch and his hitting has impoved. He would be reasonable at 7-9 mil for 2-3 year deal
also I hate farnsworth, but what about gettting him back and trading Wickman/Escobar or Prado for a starter. Let the Yanks eat that contract also
stats
McBride 3.38ERA 7G 5.1IP 4H 2ER 1BB 5k
Ledezma 6.43ERA 8G 7IP 8H 5ER 1BB 5K
does it seem strange that the pitchers on our club struggle with command, aka Sosa and McBride, but when they leave they seem to pitch better. This doesnt bode well for McDowell does it? Or am I looking at this all wrong
if anyone cares to see what our old players are doing
Matt Wright, Ken Ray, and Jason Shiell
http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?t=t_ibp&did=milb&cid=541
I still remember last year when Ken Ray struck out Barry Bonds. Think it was either his first or second appearance and Bonds didn’t even get a foul ball off Ray. I thought then that he might really help the team, but it seemes like he flamed out (like so many others last year.
Also, I vote no on trying to get Farnsworth back. I’d rather have someone who wants to be here and acts like they give a crap about what is happening. He might be able to throw a 100mph heater, but it doesn’t have much movement and too often goes out of the park even quicker.
If we could get Farns for $1 million or less, I’d say sure. (Tanyon Sturtze got $750,000.) If it’s more than that, I say no thanks.
I would rather lose as opposed to ever having Farnsworth or Kenny Lofton on this team again. Guys who don’t want to be in Atlanta, shouldn’t be in Atlanta.
No to Fransworth for sure he can’t even control his 100 or whatever MPH fastball and plus he went to the damn Yankees. What about A-rod trying to pull in about half of some teams payroll for his next contract wow.
How long before ESPN and the rest of U.S. sports admit defeat–David Beckham is not going to win the hearts & minds of America’s youth and we still won’t care about watching Soccer, just playing it:
http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news?slug=ap-sportsshowcase&prov=ap&type=lgns
Also, I had an idea for a really cool tournament…I was thinking of calling it “Who’s Now?” and setting up a March Madness style operartion with the most talked about athletes–what does everyone think?????
Imagine how cool it would be to say have Danica Patrick take on Reggie Bush! I mean, they wouldn’t actually DO anything, but we could get all the ESPN guys to completely sell out any shred of dignity they have left (really, Herbstreit?), hell, even legitimate journalists (poor, poor, Michael Wilbon) will be doing it! It would be so fun.
Plus, it will continue to take ESPN closer & closer to being what they clearly aspire to be: “Entertainment Tonight” for sports.
Seriously, I am surprised ESPN hasn’t hired Ryan Seacrest and Mary Hart to co-host the ESPY’s? Maybe ESPN should have Joan and Melissa Rivers making fun of Derek Jeter’s Tux and follow it up by shamelessly pimping the V Foundation!
Where do I send my Tennessee preview? IT is goign to shock you guys
Why does Mark Bowman continue to act like getting Tanyon Sturtze in the bullpen sometime soon will be a huge lift?
Tennessee has my respect for the year for not finding a way to weasel out of traveling to Berkeley on the opening weekend. Especially with ‘at Florida’ sitting there in Week 3.
Still, it’s hard to shake that Bowl loss to a very pedestrian Penn State team. That was embarrassing.
Alex R.;
I always enjoy it when you call out ESPN. The last paragraph of your post isn’t far off. Today, Yahoo’s coverage of the ESPY’s was totally about the fashion show with 141 pictures availabe!
I watch ESPN’s version of headline news and complain constantly that they shaft the Braves, even in the “crawler” at the bottom.
My family was skeptical until they were stuck watching the scores with me and saw them skip the Brave’s game score twice in one half hour.
Also, I’m not a fan of litigation. But I sympathize with lawyers. It’s a shame that 90% of them are greedy rats. It ruins life for the rest of them!
Yep, those are my numbers.
I think Byrnes is the perfect replacement for Andruw. I’d love to see him in a Braves uni next season.
Kevin Lee,
Thanks, but it gives me no great pleasure anymore. It’s really sad to see what a bunch of shameless, self promoting, egotistical media whores that ESPN has become.
Gone are the days when it was actually the sports leader. Now it promotes it’s favorite teams or athletes (USC, Duke basketball, the Yankees, the Sox, the Lakers, Kobe, Shaq, Reggie Bush, etc. etc.) like they are rock stars on the red carpet and then spends the other half of their time trying to act like they are Woodward & Bernstein, doing investigative reports on Bonds’ trainers.
Which is it, ESPN…shameless, Ryan Seacrest loving whores who want to see A-Rod in a tux, or act like your suddenly the Washington Post investigating Watergate.
Frankly both are sickening. ESPN was at its height when many of us (like Mac and myself) were in High School and College and Olbermann and Patrick were doing the ‘Big Show’.
Plus, ESPN supposed “hip factor” is ruined by the constant appearances of old timey blowhards like Berman, Gammons and Len Pasquerelli. So they shove these cretans down our throat while shoveling Screamin’ A. Smith and Woody Paige.
I have never sen a network that can’t make up its mind as to what it wants to be, but is doing a crappy, hateful job at everythingt it is doing.
And even when they have talented, good people like a Mike Wilbon, Kirk Herbstreit, Greg Anthony or Tim Legler, they ruin the soul of these guys by forcing them to participate in pure sh– like “Who’s Now?” serious…”Who’s Now” is exactly yhr kind of tournament that makes me want to throw my briefcase (with laptop included) at my TV. The fact that ESPN is sandwiching “Who’s Now” updates into SportsCenter has caused me a loss of appetite.
Well sure Steven A. and Woody, but you don’t like Gammons or Pasquerelli? Are you sure you like sports?
Frankly I can’t believe people still watch SportsCenter when ESPNews is right there. They actually talk about sports. Sure it’s a little Yankees/Red Sox heavy, but at least it’s sports and not “Who’s Now” or some other fool thing.
