*If you read last night’s recap, Christian wrote that Chris Sale would get the nod today. Unfortunately not. It’s Bryce Elder.*
Taking 2 of 3 from the Phillies felt pretty doggone good and now it’s time to snag some snakes in a 4 game series. The Braves when then head to San Diego for 3 right before the All Star Break.
If you’re one that likes transactions, today is your day as the Braves made quite a bit of moves today. Here’s the official release:
The Braves today recalled RH Bryce Elder to Atlanta and he will start tonight’s game at Arizona. The club also selected OF Eddie Rosario to the major league roster, and optioned LH Dylan Lee and OF Luke Williams to Triple-A Gwinnett. To make room on the 40-man roster, Atlanta designated OF J.P. Martínez for assignment.
I can’t deny that I’m disappointed to see Elder make his way back to the mound after putting up dud after dud at the beginning of the year, but I understand what AA is trying to do. Eddie Rosario is back and will likely be the left side of a platoon for Adam Duvall when Michael Harris II gets back, but for now, he’ll likely be the starting LFer and should get plenty of shots to prove he’s worthy of the spot.
Dylan Lee getting optioned just seems cruel. He’s pitched brilliantly and has thrown the 2nd most innings as a reliever (#1 is Jesse Chavez). It’s the option game and I get it, but I don’t have to like it.
Luke Williams gets sent down and for some strange reason, Zack Short is still here. Lastly, J.P. Martinez gets the axe. After watching a few of his AAA games, I thought there was potential there. However, MLB was the real test and he failed it quite hard. Needless to say, so has every single offensive call-up this year:
- Zack Short: .421 OPS
- Luke Williams: .350 OPS
- J.P. Martinez: .500 OPS
- Chadwick Tromp: .625 OPS
- Forrest Wall: .554 OPS
- Eli White: .634 OPS
The Braves have had to use these guys way too much due to injury and I hope AA has a plan to add.
Braves Lineup (and Bryce Elder)

- Jarred Kelenic
- Ozzie Albies
- Austin Riley
- Matt Olson
- Marcell Ozuna
- Adam Duvall
- Eddie Rosario
- Sean Murphy
- Orlando Arcia
Hope we got the anti-venom. Bryce Elder, you’re up. Here’s your fuel for tonight;

If anyone looked at Rosario’s record at Chase Field, you’ll understand why he’s in the lineup tonight. Maybe he can be “managed” like Jesse Chavez so that we only see his good side….. With Duvall showing some life (briefly) maybe this lineup will get us past the Snakes….. I think what hurts Eddie’s rep the most is thinking he is a full time player (like Duvall). If we can get Harris back and batting 7th/8th, maybe Rosario/Duvall might make a good platoon.
A bit of bad luck, but this is the third time through and Bryce Elder can’t get anyone out.
Snit finally has the hook with the bases loaded, one run already in and no one out, setting Holmes up for the potential Triple Grybo.
Pretty lousy time for Grant Holmes to have an Episode immediately upon entering.
Call me crazy, but I think this notion of scoring three runs in a single game isn’t a fad, I think it’s here to stay. Our boys could stand to learn how to do it every now and again.
Full-scale Hibernation Mode tonight.
At one point, they made five outs in nine pitches. Never a mind to make a pitcher in his debut work, to see what he had. No, let’s just swing at everything.
Whoa, didn’t see THAT coming. Nice swing from Murphy to punish a high fastball. More of that, Sean.
And they won a game when allowing at least four runs!
I did not see this win coming. Colour me surprised, Braves.
Really interesting that Rosario was at the center of the comeback. The first 2 outs looked like the game was over. Rosario turned it around and set the stage for Murphy.
Looks like I owe someone a Coke!
Is anyone following the draft? Anyone I should get excited about us potentially taking?
Rousing win while this old man slept. A lot of comments about our impatient approach. I wonder if some of this is due to analytics which says swinging at the first pitch tends to be a positive. If a team relies too much on that approach, could opponents compensate by throwing fewer first pitch strikes and fastballs? Does anyone know how to look up whether we are seeing fewer meatballs on the first pitch than last year?
recapped.
