It’s been a tough week for Braves Journal writers and I’m going to have to dock both Alex’s and Christian’s pay for the week. So….yes, you all are stuck with me again on this recap/series preview post.
The Braves took 2 of 3 from the Yankees. Max Fried, aka Varsity, reigned supreme, giving up 5 singles, 1 double, and 1 earned run in 6 innings of work. Jarred Kelenic continues to impress from the leadoff spot, driving in 2 of the 3 runs. Since being summoned to the leadoff spot, he’s put on a show!
Pierce Johnson, Joe Jimenez, and Raisel Iglesias finished the Yankees off, only giving up 1 hit and striking out 5.
Braves and Cardinals, Game 1
Spencer Schwellenbach will take the ball in game 1 vs. Lance Lynn. I’m in St. Louis right now and will be going to games 2 and 3 of the series and I’m pretty excited about that!
A Transactions I’ve Never Seen Before
It looks like Ray Kerr has run into some more trouble, but not on the mound. This doesn’t sound good.
Braves Lineup
It looks like Brian Snitker has given in to the idea that Adam Duvall is an everyday starter. Forrest Wall looks to be the first in line for partial duties, but it’s likely obvious that AA will be looking for a LH accompaniment for Duvall.

Dang, what is that about 3+ of our young starters/pitchers that have gone done with injuries recently?
It’s a league wide thing.
Hayden Harris has been promoted to AAA. Something to watch. Dude has gaudy numbers.
Read on Fangraphs that he throws 80% fastballs. Doesn’t throw especially hard but it plays up.
No Goldy or Arenado in the lineup tonight. We should take advantage, if possible.
Toscano reports that Kerr will have TJS.
I don’t think we have said enough on here how good of a job the bullpen has done. (It’s been lost in how good the top 3 of the rotation have been.)
Currently, the highest ERA out there is Bummer’s respectable 3.86 (and he has a much better FIP of 2.97).
Daysbel and Holmes in small samples haven’t given up a run yet. One of them will have to be optioned when Minter comes of the IL.
Chavez: 1.38
Lee: 2.27
Iggy: 2.51
Jimenez: 2.70
Minter: 2.95
Johnson: 3.55
Didn’t realize Matt Carpenter was still playing. I thought when we traded for him and immediately DFA’ed him he was done.
Accidentally tuned into the Cardinals’ broadcast, just long enough to hear Chip say about Schwellenbach, ‘Showing swing-and-miss stuff, he gets the ball on the ground.’
Umpire missed strike 3 on that last pitch which cost us a 4th run.
Need that ABS system.
We seem to struggle mightily against small-ball teams.
If you can’t muster anything off the exhumed corpse of Lance Lynn, you deserve to lose.
Schwellenbach got BABIP’ed that inning. This is the team that knocked us out in 2019 with the “devil magic.” Murphy had a couple of misplays.
0 walks, 5 Ks so far.
recapped.
