I’ve been following major league baseball pretty intensively for 55 years. You don’t need me to point out how the game has changed tremendously over those decades.
On the other hand, last night’s game brought to mind some eternal truths taught by two of the greatest baseball minds of my lifetime. Earl Weaver insisted—and his teams proved year after year–that good starting pitching and three run homers will win most baseball games. The Dodgers got a terrific start from Hyun-Jin Ryu: seven shutout innings, eight K’s, four singles, and perhaps most significantly to Weaver afficianados, no bases on balls. On offense, the Dodgers scored six runs on only five hits. But three of those hits left the yard, and one dinger was of the three run variety. Max Muncy’s 3 run homer in the second off Mike Foltynewicz followed a hit by pitch and a walk.
Leo Mazzone insisted—and his pitchers proved year after year—that fastball command is the key to good pitching. Folty’s performance in his two innings of work demonstrated Leo’s truth. He walked 3 and hit a batter. But the lack of command showed most noticeably on the two home runs he surrendered; both were on upper nineties fastballs that were right over the plate.
Speaking of great baseball minds, I happened to catch Jeff Francouer on the radio pregame. Frenchy said that the key for Folty, and indeed all Braves pitchers in the series, would be to avoid walks. The man knows whererof he speaks. We all remember Frenchy’s playing days; rarely was there ever a batter better at avoiding walks.
On offense, the Braves never really threatened. All six hits they garnered were singles, and they drew no walks. I thought of Earl Weaver once again in the sixth, when RAJ reached on an error. He was erased on a caught stealing, down four with Freeman on deck. (It was actually a hit and run in which John could not make contact). Outs are your most precious commodity—don’t be giving them away!
One small positive sign in the game. Newcomb and Fried both got their playoff feet wet and pitched well. Perhaps that will pay dividends down the line.
So, another inauspicious start to the Braves postseason. This game—the first of the 2018 playoffs for the Braves—had one very important thing in common with the Braves’ six previous playoff openers: a Braves loss. I don’t need to remind you how those six previous division series turned out.
But as much as I love dwelling on the past (y’all may have noticed), history is not destiny. One lopsided loss is still just one loss. They play again today. The Braves still have the opportunity to split the two games in LA and come home with home field advantage for the final three.
Weaver said momentum in baseball is the next day’s starting pitcher. Well, that’s not encouraging. The Dodgers start Clayton Kershaw, the best pitcher of his generation in game two, followed by Walker Buehler, who is looking more and more like a young right handed version of Kershaw, in game three.
Still, the 2018 Braves have defied the odds all year. And they have made their mark as a team that never quits and continues to come from behind. Let’s continue to believe in and enjoy this team until it’s over.

Great recap for a not so great game.
I was still excited to see our boys back in October
Kershaw is not invincible…let’s get em today
Thanks for the excellent recap. I agree that Kershaw is possibly the best of this generation, however, while he’s still really good, I don’t think he’s the pitcher he was a few years ago. The key will be Sanchez. If he can go 7, I think we win.
It’s very simple, we just need to score some runs!
In 1991 NLCS Game 1, we lost 5-1. Then we won 1-0 for game 2 behind Steve Avery.
I hope this makes you feel better.
Beautiful recap. Thank you.
It was just one loss. Lots more baseball to be played.
Now, let’s go get them! Go Braves.
I don’t know if it is based on the Braves overachieving with all the inexperienced rookies on the team or what, but I didn’t feel all that upset after the game. We have an extremely bright future and I am happy the youngins are getting some valuable experience in the bright lights.
Kudos to Snit for NOT being a “Bobby clone.” The guy that has clearly been the best and most consistent starting pitcher all year looks bad. Go to the pen for 2 lefthanded rookies, one of whom had looked ragged out the past few weeks and the other had looked mediocre because of recurring blisters. Yes, they were down 4 when that started, but the thing got stabilized.
I think a potential weakness of the Dodgers is to do just this. Announce a righty, and go to lefthanded relief. Their “righthanded lineup” has lots of bad defenders and they won’t switch them in very readily.
Takes away their ability to game the platoon.
It’s a different ballgame if Folty retires Pederson after being up 0-2 in both the 1st and 2nd.
As was noted in the game thread, letting Folty bat if you are not going to send him out for the 3rd was inexplicable. Choosing to hit and run down 4 especially when Camargo was in a count where the pitcher did not have to come in with a strike was also bad. There isn’t a lot of margin for error, and objectively bad decisions don’t help matters.
As has also been noted, Kershaw has not been close to peak Kershaw this year. Injuries have definitely begun to sap him of some of his effectiveness, and his last start was blah. If Sanchez can keep them in the yard, we have a chance.
Carrying a 24-man roster is also inexplicable. In the end it’s not going to matter, but management’s job is to maximize our chance of winning. They failed. It’s on AA more than Snit.
I am thinking about the doubleheader in Washington, where we lost the first game and were looking at Scherzer in the nightcap. Things had not been going well, and the mood was full DOOMCON1. We beat Scherzer in that nightcap, and you know the rest.
a pinch hit opportunity with 1 out and none on in the third made not even an iota of difference to the outcome last night.
That doesn’t excuse playing dumb. You roll with the best odds you can. If you are going to pull Folty, then you use one of your crappy PH options there. He might get on ahead of Acuna. Folty is an automatic out.
Yes we still lose in all likelihood. But if you take that attitude then you might as well just try all kinds of bad-odds plays, because we’re massive underdogs and nothing we do matters.
Since the game ultimately proved that Flaherty would remain on the bench, and may very well not be in a game all series, why not pinch-hit him there? He’s slightly less of an automatic out, and you have him there for a reason. Definitely a bad decision. While I understand not wanting to burn Duda, he also didn’t get in the game. None of this would have made a difference in the game most likely, but hitting Folty just didn’t make sense.
Flaherty isn’t a good hitter, but he looks like Trout compared to Folty. He had to give a PH a try in that spot. I have to believe that the early hook on Folty was more about game 4*, than it was about last night. If we win one of the next two, Folty comes back and Julio is bypassed. Hard to picture a scenario where Teheran stifles the Dodgers line-up. It’s all moot if we don’t hit though.
well, tonight’s game is an hour later. less carry on fly balls will be welcome.
I agree that it was bone headed to let Folty hit. Even if you don’t want to use one of you 5 bench players, you could’ve at least gone with Julio or Touki who have a chance in the batter’s box.
Yes there was 1 out no one on, if whoever gets on there, you’ve got the top of the order up to chip away.
Similarly bad was the mid inning pitching change to pull Fried who was cruising to face Puig, who has been crushing righties.
Gausman would have also been a good move, though he is a lefty. I can’t believe I’m breaking down handedness on which pitcher should have PH for Folty. But the decision was that obviously bone-headed.
Anibal has to deliver a pretty strong pitching performance, or we’re in real trouble, obviously. If that doesn’t occur, then I really want to throw every young pitcher we have so they can get their feet wet. Some may not agree, but I find a lot of future value in Folty, Newk, Fried, and Sobotka getting in a playoff game.
Thank you, tfloyd, for the elegant recap. Go Braves.
@17, I agree with the 2nd part of your comment win or lose. Not saying you punt this playoff opportunity or anything like that, but let’s get the kids on the bump as much as we can so next October (and the next after that). All I’m rooting for right now is for Folty to get another chance.
Next October isn’t a given. We’re here now. Playing the “long-game” is for those with infinite patience. I’m out of patience with Atlanta sports.
@16, I was going to mention the Fried thing but my comment was already too long. I did not understand pulling Fried mid inning in that situation when he was pitching well. He isn’t a matchup reliever, he’s a starter in a relief role. Leave him in there unless trouble is brewing or until you PH for him. I’ve always thought if you run enough relievers out there, you are eventually going to find one that doesn’t have it.
Next October is indeed not a given. Pitching is volatile. Improvement isn’t always linear for young players. We have to replace Markakis’ production, and other teams will also be trying to improve this offseason.
Right now, though, I doubt there’s much actual trade-off between trying to win now and letting the kids play. It was a productive loss in that we may have hit on something with Newcomb and Fried in this series.
If you guys are picking apart management decisions in this game, you’re wrong.
You don’t burn through your bench that quick.
The game was over in the first inning
@24, agree to disagree. You do not improve your odds to win by giving away outs just because maybe you’ll need a PH later. The only valid reason is that the intention was to send him back out for the 3rd, but he said or did something after his AB which led you to pull him.
I feel like Snit made some bad decisions, but we’d still have lost even if he plays things perfectly. I think both of those can be true at the same time.
What else is there to say? They are lots better than us. Win tonight and we swing back from the ledge into over-the-top optimism again.
To those who wanted the Dodgers over the Rockies because “OH NO….COORS FIELD!!!” Still liking that opinion now or do you concede that it’s kind of silly?
Anyone else notice that it looked like Alex Wood got yanked for not covering first on Tyler Flowers hit off the 1B glove with 2 out in the ninth?
27 – Seriously – I was pumped in early September when it looked like LA might miss the playoffs, they clearly have the best roster in the NL. Not that they aren’t beatable.
Perhaps some folks were thinking you’d have a better shot beating LA in 5 than in 7 so rather face them first?
Better recapped than played, tfloyd.
MLB needs to seriously consider playing multiple games at the same time on weekdays so that they can all be going in or close to primetime. What they’re doing to the Cleveland-Houston series (which it’s entirely possible to find more compelling than the Yankees-Boston one from a neutral perspective) is a bad joke.
On the weekends, sure, put some games at 1 p.m. Eastern and have it go all day. But on weekdays, I think it’s entirely possible that ratings would be better if you had an NCAA tournament vibe going with multiple games going on at once than with afternoon games that no one can watch, anyway. And even if not, it’s probably not worth screwing over fans from Cleveland and Houston for an extra half-point in the ratings.
It just occurred to me that we batted Tyler Flowers 5th in a playoff game.
If you hadn’t mentioned it, I may not have known. Agreed that the mid-day, weekday playoff games are stupid.
It would be preferable to happen on a Saturday, but the quadruple header at the start of the Division Series round is glorious, don’t mess with it.
32-I had the same thought but Flowers vs. LHP this year….348/511/606.
If you happen to have any happy thoughts, send them Ernie Johnson Jr.’s way.
Doctors found blood clots in his legs and advised him not to fly, so he can’t cover the playoffs.
Max Muncy is clearly taking steroids.
Max Munchy
he and his bat’s crunchy
@36 – I read EJ Jr’s book and he has already gone through a lot with his cancer. The special needs kids that he’s adopted are amazing. His dad was a great man and EJ Jr is his own man, but he is also an incredible person. Will definitely pray for him. We need more men like him and his dad.
Lineup per DOB (he has both Acuna and Inciarte playing CF, so I’m gonna assume he’s just drunk).
Acuna 7
Camargo 5
Freeman 3
Markakis 9
Suzuki 2
Albies 4
Inciarte 8
Culberson 6
Sanchez 1
EJ Jr. is far superior to Chip.
Sorry, but my goal in this series is for the Braves to score at least one run. The Dodgers scored 2 runs in 1966 so I’m hoping to do at least as well.
I just want Acuna to do something cool, at a minimum.
I kinda want to win.
back-to back-to back-to back
quadruple header, such indulgence
the best saved for last.
Best to EJ JR…this was always much his biggest week of the year in terms of audience size.
Boston not so quietly dissecting NY. AJ Happ, he of the great record against the Sox, taken out after 2 innings having given up 5 runs. Folty redux.
Gosh I love that kid. Acuna Matata.
Now give me a damn sac fly, Freddie.
I guess we’re not gonna score again.
That was a laser.
Meh.
Well, mission accomplished. I suppose we could raise our sights and try to score a run.
I hope Anibal has a “near no hitter” in him tonight. That’s the only way we win.
If the Braves can’t get anywhere with small ball, we’re going to have to hold them to nothing and pray for a mistake by the Dodgers.
Freeman and Markakis are making me crazy.
Freddie deserves that GG.
Smoltz keeps calling our pitcher “Anna belle.”
Bye bye ballgame
Seems like it’s better to have Machado at #4 than Markakis. I hope this is considered when determining who should be our RF next year. Harper or bust.
If you’re gonna walk him, why don’t you just fucking walk him????? Insane!
Absolutely pathetic.
I’m not even that upset. They are clearly much better than us. The team did well just to get this far.
What was the point of an “unintentional intentional walk” and then throwing that pitch 3-0?
We had to use our defense to our advantage and keep the ball on the ground. We are not doing that.
It was a fun season, but I’m about done with this team by now. Would’ve much rather faced the rockies, who are seemingly as weak as the braves.
Goodnight
This is gonna get embarassing isn’t it. Sigh.
@57
No one is saying you have to feel this series in your bones for the rest of your life like the 2017 Super Bowl or something, but can you wait until the series is actually over before you gloss over us giving up two runs due to gross incompetence by talking about what a great year it was? We’re still actually playing this freaking series!
@59 – the pitchers, in an obvious response to having dansby hurt, are pitching for fly balls/hr’s so that culberson can avoid a brooks conrad situation.
We had a great chance at the first run and our best hitter couldn’t get it done. How is it possible this team is going to be able to rally when Machado goes and blasts one out.
Anibal’s pitch was barely a strike and was in Machado’s worst hitting area according to pitchcast. Maybe it got too much plate but he could have expected Machado to take a pitch not in his wheelhouse.
I always though our best path to winning in the playoffs was if the Dodgers were eliminated.
@65
Or, since we were trying to walk him, once it became 2-0 we could’ve just held four fingers up and actually walked him. He can’t hit a home run if we do that.
I love Smoltz.
A man cries “who cares about stolen bases” as a first baseman steals second for the best team remaining in the NL.
Sanchez has no clue where the ball is going.
Kershaw with a better AB than 90% of ours.
I wish Smoltz would just say, “well, it doesn’t really matter if the pitcher is set up to sacrifice because the Braves have the worst hitting pitchers in the league.”
By the way, over the course of the stretch run and now into the playoffs, I’ve officially decided our pitch calling is terrible. I don’t know if it’s Flozuki or Chuck Hernandez or a combo thereof, but it’s terrible. Whether we’re exacerbating our pitchers’ control problems with weird decisions on location and pitch selection, or calling the exact wrong pitch at the exact wrong time…you name it, we do it.
Now’s not really the time for the conversation of how we fix it going forward, but there it is… Something to discuss whenever this season ends.
@73 I agree with you, Nick, and have said the same during several games.
Dang, Acuna almost hit a pitch in the same area as Machado except it was about 10mph slower and he just missed it.
LOL, Smoltz: “The Braves offense has a lot of one-pitch outs.” Tough but fair.
Honestly, Smoltz is one of the best analysts I’ve heard in a long time. Anyone note that he is almost talking 100% of the time? He could do this by himself.
This guy who’s with him is a potted plant whose job is to keep Joe Buck’s seat warm until Fox deems the series important enough to drag Buck away from NFL duty, but yeah, Smoltz is great.
After about 120 years of Tim McCarver and the horrendous year of Harold Reynolds, it’s almost shocking that Fox has stumbled on a seriously good analyst to head their baseball coverage.
We might not even score a run this series.
Acuna will hit one out to cut the deficit to 9 at some point either tonight or Sunday.
Extend him.
Will the Braves score a run in the entire NLDS?
I may change my poll vote…
Right there…just a garbage pitch call. Has nobody learned that they can’t sneak letter-high fastballs by this team? Anybody?
So they are long balling us to death again.
How many times have we seen us wanting to pitch up but didn’t get the pitch up enough?
Turner’s bloop hit is an example of how everything has gone right for the Dodgers.
The Dodgers have also gotten two cheap doubles down the first base line this series.
We’re just gonna keep grounding out to third.
We are doomed as always.
Their pitching has something to do with this.
They have made every play they are supposed to make and then some.
I got up to make a drink during the commercial break, came back and our half-inning was already over.
Batting Camargo 2nd is working out well.
Wow, AA and Snit are really using this as a growing experience for the young pitchers. There are so many you can use before you put in Fried and Touki.
lolpuig
Is it my imagination or have the rookies given up 0 runs and the vets given up all the Dodger HRs? I guess Sobotka had an unearned run…… Maybe we should have given the starts to the rookie phenoms – Fried and Touissant.
Ok time for four runs here…shock the world Bravos.
Another Smoltz understatement “your power numbers are a little low and you’re slumping”.
If only Freeman had the hand-eye coordination of an elite bunter like Julio.
Kimbrel gave up a HR to Judge. Not as automatic as he used to be.
Has any team ever failed to score in a postseason series?
@101. Let’s aim for that.
The Dodgers might could win this series by playing without any outfielders.
As least we are forcing Kershaw to run the base!
@103, I think making him run pissed him off. Kershaw’s going straight Maddux on us.
LOL…that fool took Kershaw out of the game! Oh pretty please with sugar on top, get a rally going!
Is it just me or does Lucas Duda look a fair bit like Brian McCann?
*This* is why we carried 3 catchers. So they could burn Flowers and not bat an eye. Well played AA.
They’re treating us like the 1998 Yankees treated the Padres.
Or how the Yankees treated us in 1999?
Well, I had zero expectations, and yet still managed to be disappointed. Atlanta sports yall.
THEY WERE SHIFTING WITH ONE OUT REMAINING AND THE TYING RUN ON DECK.
I hate Freeman so much.
Might as well be historically bad, get shut out in game 3 and set a record.
What a fucking joke.
It seems that no team has ever been shutout in an entire playoff series.
This is by far the worst Braves team to ever make the playoffs and we’re playing a Dodgers team built to win the World Series. This was never going to be close, I figured we’d get a runner to third once in a while though.
I expect in game 3 we get a couple early runs and get the state media going with some expectations then blow it all around the 5th and lose like 5-2 or something. This is all irrelevant, this team shouldn’t be judged against what they’re doing against the Dodgers in the NLDS, the Nats should be in this series. This version of the Braves will ultimately be decided as a success or failure over the next 3-4 years, not this one.
We ran into Kershaw. This is how he was supposed to pitch. Let’s mak it interesting in Atlanta. Go Braves.
Yeah Timo, I’m with you.
We look like a team full of young players going against an experienced playoff team.
I think this is a good lesson. We will be back
We look like a .500 team that played in a horrid division. We’re playing with like a 20-man roster. It is what it is. I was hoping we’d be more than a minor speed bump for the Dodgers…who knows. Win Sunday and at least regain some dignity.
Fried/Touki/Newcomb – there’s a positive. They can build on this and know they can perform on the big stage.
The offense needs a talent infusion, we’re not just one guy away. A 20-year old put us on his back and carried us as far as he could. He needs help.
