Anyway, about Nolan Ryan from the last thread, he was, and still is, one of my favorite pitchers ever (I named one of my cats after him when I was 11). However, he is seen as a better pitcher than he actually is because he got such favorable press. The thing is, his approach led him to be swinging from “really great” to “mediocre” all throughout his 27 seasons in the bigs.

Frenchy in Sep has put up a 839 OPS, bringing his season OPS up to..647. There is lot of speculation of what Wren should do, and which FA to go after.
But I think the tone will be decided by what he does with
a) Hampton/Smoltz/Glavine
b) Francoeur
As regards Frenchy, either he needs to be given another half year in 2009, prefrably in a platoon role. I know lots of the denizens here argue for him to be waived, but he is a tools goof, and there is no point swapping him out at the nadir of his value in a lost season. If he goes on a superficial hot streak without really changing the fundamentals, trade him.
I don’t think there’s any benefit to trading Frenchy at this point. He has no value. If all we want to do is get him off the 25-man, we might as well send him back to the minors or drop him outright. Even as bad as he is, he wouldn’t hurt us as a fourth or fifth outfielder. He just needs to be dropped from the starting lineup, circa 3 months ago.

really there is about 3 things that can happen with Francoeur…
1. He returns to being an Average RF and is useful for us while his cost is low, we hold onto him in this scenario
2. We hold onto him now, hoping for a return to average, but it doesnt come. We lose all value in him and basically DF’A him
3. We hope for a little hot streak this month and trade him this offseason (while all his value isnt completely gone) – I wouldnt expect much of a return though
I’m still hoping for 4. We take out a life insurance policy on him and send him to Afghanistan on a goodwill tour.

Francoeur has hit .209/.274/.318 this year against lefties – and that includes five misguided intentional walks.
Even as bad as he is, he wouldn’t hurt us as a fourth or fifth outfielder.
No matter the role, if he “hits” like he has this year, he hurts the team. It’s just a matter of degrees.

I don’t think there’s any benefit to trading Frenchy at this point. He has no value.
Eventually you have to pull the plug. Everytime he is bad, he cannot be traded or dumped because he has no value. And he starts playing good, it’s proof he has figured it out and needs to stay. It is a seemingly never ending cycle of madness.
I hope Francoeur isn’t fooling anyone whose opinion on his being here next season matters with a decent (not good or great) September. The standards on Francoeur are so low, he only need go 1-for-4 on any given night to raise his batting average.

I don’t believe Francoeur has no trade value. He’s young enough and had enough success in the past that some team (I’m looking at you, Royals) would trade some A or AA prospect for him. The key is for the Braves not to be deceived by his “potential” and get rid of him now like they did with Kyle Davies last year. In another year or two when Jeff not only still sucks but costs millions of dollars in arbitration then he will really be hard to get rid of for anything valuable.
Taveraz now has 67 stolen bases while playing in only 126 games and with a .306 OBP. That’s pretty incredible. There is also some chance he’ll finish the year with under a .300 slugging percentage playing half his games in Coors Field – which if nothing else would seem to be a doubles and triples haven for a player with his speed.
A former HS teammate of mine about 10 years ago for the Rockies A+ team stole 87 bases in the same season he batted around .215 with around a .260 OBP. He literally stole almost every time he got on base.

Who needs a backup outfielder who can’t hit, run, or field? Who needs anything who can’t hit, run, or field?
Francoeur’s OBP is somewhere in the low .290’s and that is despite the fact that he leads the Braves by-far in hit-by-pitches this season with ten.
He hasn’t been hit nearly enough.
The problem this year is that we’ve had 3 or 4 other backup outfielders to go along with Frenchy.
Yeah, but they’ve been okay, for backup outfielders. Jeffy has been okay for a backup catcher.

Tavarez’s numbers remind me of a guy from the mid-’70s named Larry Lintz, a little, fast guy with no power.
Came up with the Expos. Never hit a HR, but I remember that he seemed to try to steal a base any time he reached.
He played parts of 6 seasons—was only a starter one year, really—but in 350 career games, 616 ABs, he put up 227/336/252 & stole 128 bases.
Is it my imagination, or do the the no-power, no-walk speed guys just KILL us?
