Continuing the conversation from the last thread: I’m guessing that it’s Thorman who would get the boot if we got Tex. Woodward is more versatile, as much as I hate him. Perhaps we would either waive him or more likely throw him into a secondary trade.

heres something
On the other hand, Damaso Marte is known to be available. He’d be helpful as a lefty-killer. For Marte, Chacon, or Torres, the Pirates want a Major Leaguer of some sort (according to MLB.com’s Mark Bowman). Bowman says the Braves would get in on Marte if Littlefield would drop the price.
Nick

Thorman is a Major Leaguer of some sort! Awesome! Heh.
Indeed, it was Snell and Marte I originally wanted to utilize Salty for. But either Snell was pulled back by Pittsburgh, or a few Braves folks realized he might not be the ideal pitcher. I think he still has much upside, but his last few outings haven’t been so great.
Marte does make about $2 mil a year right now.

Whatever happened to the possibility that insurance money might cover Hampton’s lost time? Can that money be utilized this year for arms or in the Tex trade?
Sonny Koufax (Minden, La.): Dou you see the Tex/Salty trade going down, and where do you see Gagne ending up?
SportsNation Jayson Stark: I think, in the end, some version of that deal with Atlanta is likely to happen, though it’s not a sure thing. I don’t see Gagne going anywhere. His contract pretty much stipulates he has to close. And it’s tough to find a contender that needs a closer, is willing to cough up all that money and give up the players they’re looking for. I can’t find one anyway. I also hear a lot of teams are scared by his physical condition.
Ryan (Long Beach): What about Teixeira to the Angels? Any chance the Angels and Rangers trade within the division?
SportsNation Jayson Stark: I don’t think it’s impossible, but I do think it’s unlikely. Look over Bill Stoneman’s history as a GM. Can you find one trade he has ever made like this, where he’d be giving up some of his best young players/prospects for a short-term fix like this? I don’t see it. And I don’t see Texas wanting to look at Teixeira 19 times next year, either. One more reason I’m betting Atlanta in this derby.
Nothing we haven’t already discussed here, but a general consensus seems to be forming.
I would much prefer Teixeira but if we get a package of Snell and Marte, that’s pretty darn good–but in my mind, that’s the “B” package to the “A” package of Teixeira & CJ Wilson or Benoit.
Again, just my opinion but a stud hitter and reliever right now is far more needed to an offense that’s averaging 2 runs a game to teams like the Giants and Reds.
Ummm, couldn’t we offer Gagne the closer’s role HERE?
Hello, look at Blob Wickman these days…I am not saying he can’t pitch better down the stretch, but he’s screwed up way too many times to not be willing to give the ball to gagne in the 9th.
Stark makes a good point. Bill Stoneman’s another GM like Terry Ryan: he assembles lots of good, young talent that other teams want, and then refuses to trade them, instead holding onto them until they bust.
I think the issue with Gagne may be that his salary plus Tex’s would be pretty steep. Gagne makes ~$6 mil on top of Tex’s $9 mil. Granted, we’d only be paying a part of that, but even if Liberty ups the payroll, JS may not want to take on so much salary.
Stu

I’m hoping that when we lose Druw to free agency, that will put the Braves in a much stroner position to sign Tex to a deal (provided we end up with him). Ideally they would be able to sign him to an extension next season though it is highly unlikely that Borasssss would want him too.
All this is of course highly speculative. But the thought of replacing Druw with a younger switch-hitter with as much power, run production, better BA and OBP is hard not to hope for.
I don’t see Gagne going anywhere. His contract pretty much stipulates he has to close.
If this is true, allow me to be the first to say screw that prima donna crap. I don’t agree with all of Cox’s decisions about player usage, but he’s running this ship — not Gagne, his agent, and whatever fool thing the Rangers’ GM agreed to.
Which is this, by the way:
$6 million plus $75,000 for 3 GF, $0.1M for 6 GF, $0.15M each for 10, 13 & 16 GF, $0.175M for 20, 23 26 GF, $0.2M each for 30, 33 & 36 GF, $0.25M each for 40, 43 & 46 GF, $0.5M each for 50, 53 & 56 GF, $0.333M each for 60 & 63 GF, $0.334M for 66 GF

regarding who would get the boot if/when tex is acquired …
i’m pretty sure thorman won’t get sent down. i think he’s out of options, which means he’d have to clear waivers if they were going to send him down. and i think there are plenty of teams that would be willing to give him a look if they didn’t have to give something up for him. and he hasn’t surfaced in any trade rumors that i’m aware of. so i figure he’s on the big league club all year.

i’m not at all sure that bobby and john are ready to give up on him anyway. i’m one to believe that thor has more ability than his poor numbers indicate. its unfortunate that we can’t send him down to AAA to get some consistent ABs and try and work out his problems.
of course, he’s not likely to get a chance to work it out with the braves if we have Tex on the roster. i guess they’ll try to get something for him in the offseason though it probably won’t be much.

on July 27, 2007 at 4:40 pm
Thorman would become our primary left handed pinch hitter if we get Tex (assuming JS doesn’t turn around and trade Thor somewhere else which I hope he does).
Indeed, I’d gladly send Escobar to Chicago for Vazquez.
Dan
on July 27, 2007 at 4:52 pm
Texas first baseman Mark Teixeira remains the most intriguing player who could be moved before the deadline, and Atlanta continues to look like the frontrunner. The Braves are reportedly willing to offer a package of right-hander Kyle Davies, rookie catcher/first baseman Jarrod Saltalamacchia, and infield prospect Elvis Andrus.
The Angels’ chances of landing Teixeira have diminished now that they need right-hander Ervin Santana to come back up from Salt Lake to take the rotation spot of Bartolo Colon; Colon is likely to miss the rest of the season with his elbow injury. There had been talk of Santana leading an Angels’ package that would also include first baseman Casey Kotchman, and outfield prospect Terry Evans. The Angels have now turned their attention to Chicago White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko, who they nearly signed as a free agent after the 2005 season. They and the Dodgers have also asked about Toronto’s third baseman, Troy Glaus.
How about Salty, Davies and Andrus for Tex and Mahay (he does have a 2.15 ERA and .225 BA against)
Then turn around and send Escobar and Harrison, or perhaps Prado, Thorman and Harrison for Vazquez (since the Sox might need another 1st baseman if Konerko goes)
That’s selling off a healthy portion of the AAA/AAAA farm, but it gets us what we need.
Dan
on July 27, 2007 at 5:03 pm
I like that trade. It’s our back-up catcher who is obviously not trusted at first base, an A-ball shortstop prospect and Kyle Davies (addition by subtraction).
If Schuerholz can convince the Rangers to take Davies instead of Harrison, it’s a great trade as opposed to a good one.
If we were talking Saltalamacchia, Jo-Jo Reyes and Escobar, it would be different. But it’s not. It’s Saltalamacchia, Andrus and Davies/Harrison.
Marc Schneider
on July 27, 2007 at 5:17 pm
The problem is, the Braves are in a situation where they really don’t have any good options at first base either this year or next year. Apparently, they don’t want Salty at first, so they are going to have to do something eventually anyway. I agree that Thorman is probably better than he has shown but I doubt Bobby and JS would be willing to go into next season with him starting again. So, one way or another, they were going to have to do something. Trading pitching is dangerous considering how bad ours is now, but the Braves track record of developing pitchers isn’t good anyway and none that were traded have really hurt. But, eventually, the Braves are going to have to do something about the pitching too so it’s a real conundrum.
There’s no doubt about it, Marc. If not now, the Braves will have to invest in major league ready pitching for next year. I remain amazed at John Smoltz, but I am fearful with nearly every pitch that his arm may just fall off. With Hudson erratic year to year and Carlyle, Reyes, Davies and even James iffy month to month (and game to game in some cases), we need a stopper type pitcher to compete.
Me, I keep thinking of the Hudson deal. JS stuck to his guns on that and wound up making the trade, which didn’t wind up costing the Braves much of anything in terms of prospects. Have faith. I question his player judgment sometimes (Rey Sanchez!) but the man is very good at this, one of the best ever.
2001 was one of the strangest seasons for the Braves, and yet they still won the division AND got to the NLCS. Freaky.

on July 27, 2007 at 7:39 pm
Mac–I have been remembering the Fred McGriff deal in 1993 because JS got his man and it really did not cost much. Melvin Nieves was a quality prospect who never really developed–but Donnie Elliot and Vince Moore.
The situation is different, but between the Hudson deal and the trade for McGriff, JS has been able to acquire some critical parts for a team without mortaging the future.
Lets hope it continues….

2001 was a really bizarre season. It was the closest we came to losing the division title during the streak. We didn’t reach .500 until the end of May (which was something unheard of during recent Braves’ seasons). Then, immediately after the 9/11 attacks, we played pretty poorly, dropping five of seven to the Phillies and Mets, but rebounding against them the next week to still win the division with a paltry 88 wins. Then the next season, we brought in Sheffield and the pitching did better and we won 101 games.
2001 included the disastrous effort to use Rico Brogna at first base, the mid-season imports of Ken Caminiti, then Julio Franco (who hung around for another five years), the trading of John Rocker, Bernard Hilkey on the bench, Rafael Furcal and Quilvio Veras going down with injuries, Marcus Giles’ baffling inability to stay on the major league roster, and the aforementioned acquisition of Rey Sanchez. Strange season but we pulled it out, then swept Houston as underdogs back when we still owned them.
RobBroad4th
on July 27, 2007 at 8:02 pm
If we pick up Teixeira, Franco will play once a week MAYBE. Thorman has less experience and a similar BA (in many more ABs) and Cox probably doesn’t want to risk Salty getting hurt before a big move. It makes sense.
RobBroad4th
on July 27, 2007 at 8:05 pm
I’m surprised Diaz hasn’t shown up in trade talks. He’s a great hitter who needs more playing time.
Has anyone read this?? its Grand Theft Roto on Espn by Shawn Peters Apparently, difficult-to-spell last names are all the rage in Rumor Central since Jarrod Saltalamacchia could be moved by the Braves. Obviously, if “Salty” gets dealt to a team where he can catch four or five days a week and pick up a few at-bats at first or DH, you want to deal for him since he could easily be a top-five catcher the rest of the way. But what other players see their value spike if Saltalamacchia takes his Scrabble-winning surname to a new town? Believe it or not, the nearly-forgotten Scott Thorman might resurface. He did hit nine homers in the first three months of the season, and as bad as his .215 batting average is, it’s still better than the .197 average being posted by Julio Franco, who is one bad night from hitting his age.

I can’t say I like him, per se. I just ignore the steriods and go on the merit of the numbers.
I do have a fun thing to report with Bonds as a trivia point. When I was in 5th grade, a friend of mine gave me a Braves scorecard magazine from 1986. The game scored is the game where Bonds hit his first major league home run. 😀
RobBroad4th

He’s not a power guy. He’s good for a single and the occasional double. He can flat out hit. Steroids have nothing to do with that. The fact that Bonds can hit 72 homers at 40 (?) raises an eyebrow or two, not Julio playing at 48.

I loved that double by Franco, but I fear it could mean a lot more starts for him.
Cox: “No Mr. Schuerholz, we don’t need Teixeira. Julio Franco is a dynamic player whose veteran leadership and defense at first base are a huge asset to our postseason chances.”
Hey, I’m not saying that Bonds didn’t do it. In fact, I’m quite sure he did. I’ve just chosen not to care.

Lando, that’s BS and I’ll call you on it. The guy works hard, eats right and lives well. Not even the hint of anything untoward has been said by any teammate past or present. It is weak to assume that because you can’t understand how something can be done, it must be done by cheating.

If you have evidence against Julio, then that’s one thing. People have plenty of reasons to suspect Bonds. I have a lot of Giants fans as friends and they all hate him.

Getting back to Yunel pinch hitting for Salty Dog…really makes me think a deal is either imminent or done. Why else would Bobby not opt for a lefty with power to tie the game up?

I doubt anything will happen
Thorman is a Major Leaguer of some sort! Awesome! Heh.
Right back behind LaRoche, too.
Some items from Jason Starks Chat Wrap today:
I totally agree, Alex. The bat has more chance to effect our playoff chances than another starter.
I must say that the rumor about Liberty Media’s willingness to raise the payroll is even more exciting to me than rumors about the specific players we might acquire.
I think we should trade McCann and keep Salty
Stu, I agree. One more thing we agree on, spooky.
#15 I disagree
You’re kidding, right Jake?
Phils just got tadahito Iguchi…
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/
I guess its a short term replacement while Utley is out
I disagree too. McCann is a proven commodity, Satly isn’t.
Yes i’m kidding, I figured that would be fun!
I wouldn’t expect a deal before July 31 as John Shuerholz will keep working the phones hoping to pull a fast one on somebody.
anyone feel like we are going to get the same response after the deadline from JS, just like the one he gave us from the winter meetings.
We worked hard and were in on a lot of deals, nothing ever worked out though
I don’t think J.S. wants to go out like that.
If the Sox just gave up Iguchi, maybe we could deal them Esco?

For Javy Vazquez? Deal.
regarding who would get the boot if/when tex is acquired …
i’m pretty sure thorman won’t get sent down. i think he’s out of options, which means he’d have to clear waivers if they were going to send him down. and i think there are plenty of teams that would be willing to give him a look if they didn’t have to give something up for him. and he hasn’t surfaced in any trade rumors that i’m aware of. so i figure he’s on the big league club all year.
“i’m pretty sure thorman won’t get sent down. i think he’s out of options, which means he’d have to clear waivers if they were going to send him down. and i think there are plenty of teams that would be willing to give him a look if they didn’t have to give something up for him. and he hasn’t surfaced in any trade rumors that i’m aware of. so i figure he’s on the big league club all year.”
i’m not at all sure that bobby and john are ready to give up on him anyway. i’m one to believe that thor has more ability than his poor numbers indicate. its unfortunate that we can’t send him down to AAA to get some consistent ABs and try and work out his problems.
of course, he’s not likely to get a chance to work it out with the braves if we have Tex on the roster. i guess they’ll try to get something for him in the offseason though it probably won’t be much.
Thorman would become our primary left handed pinch hitter if we get Tex (assuming JS doesn’t turn around and trade Thor somewhere else which I hope he does).
Indeed, I’d gladly send Escobar to Chicago for Vazquez.
They and the Dodgers have also asked about Toronto’s third baseman, Troy Glaus.
http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=6508
I’d rather see Davies go than Harrison. It’s still too much for one player, though.
I really like Salty but I say go ahead with the deal. With Druw leaving lets hope that means a reup with Edgar and a extended contract for Tex.
If we get Tex does that mean Bobby finally puts Julio on the bench or will Tex be the left side of a platoon. Aghast…
“to compete” – let me rephrase that…to win.

Alright. Good news.
Freaky.
#46 – Agreed. I just did some research and Brian Jordan’s salary was more than Andruw Jones’, John Smoltz’s and on par with Glavine’s.
Right-hander pitching and Franco starting at first. What the hell Cox?
W. Harris lf, E. Renteria ss, C. Jones 3b, A. Jones cf, B. McCann c, J. Francoeur rf, K. Johnson 2b, J. Franco 1b, J. Reyes p
I have diagnosed Cox with Get Him At Bats Syndrome, or the GHABS.
This Franco fixation is getting rather old…
BAD PUN! 😛
Clearly, Cox doesn’t trust Thorman with the job anymore.
Franco isn’t better than Thorman, but you know what? This is what the situation is without Teixeira.
“Mac–I have been remembering the Fred McGriff deal in 1993 because JS got his man and it really did not cost much.”
As I recall, the Padres were originally asking for Klesko, Lopez and Nieves. We ended up fleecing them completely.
If we pick up Teixeira, Franco will play once a week MAYBE. Thorman has less experience and a similar BA (in many more ABs) and Cox probably doesn’t want to risk Salty getting hurt before a big move. It makes sense.
I’m surprised Diaz hasn’t shown up in trade talks. He’s a great hitter who needs more playing time.
It does make sense.
You know, maybe he is, and we just don’t know it.
Very true. What do I know?
Yep, not everything is reported in the media.
Has anyone read this?? its Grand Theft Roto on Espn by Shawn Peters
Apparently, difficult-to-spell last names are all the rage in Rumor Central since Jarrod Saltalamacchia could be moved by the Braves.
It says Scott Thorman might resurface ha must be kidding me
Thorman’s minor league record shows that he struggles in his first full year of play and then excels the second year. Sure, he was called up last summer, but hey, I’ll be optimistic.
2001 was also the first season with Smoltz as the closer. John Burkett almost won the ERA title. Extremely strong pitching staff, almost non-existant offense other than Chipper.
Maverick,
Clearly, that guy does not understand Cox’s mindset.
Andruw sucks again.
But his RBIs make him irreplaceable!!!111!1111!

i suppose we can put a starter back on our wish list for JS, I was all excited the game was on TBS tonight, adn now im disgusted already
So who’s going to start the next 5th day?
Wait, Tex is the answer for this?
JS needs to decide if this is a team he can win with, which he kinda has to since its the end of the road for chipper nad smoltz, and AJ is gone this year, so he either has to do alot of work in not too much time, or he needs to sell off and get some prospects where he can get them
Go Julio! Suck hard baby. Oh yeah. That’s it.

Thanks for the answer, Kyle B. That might also explain the craziness we’ve had in Colorado over the years. 🙂
Didn’t someone say that JS historically makes trades on off days? That would make a potential move on Monday.
He looked good against St. Louis, but he threw meatballs that entire inning. It wasn’t luck on Arizona’s part.
Hypothetical Question: If the Braves are close in the last 2 weeks, does Bobby go to a 4 man rotation?
#108 – Is it before a homestand? I bet that’s when the deal will go down. Plus, it’s cutting the deadline close.
at this point i just hope something happens, even if its brining in zane smith or ken oberkfell, something
at least the Mets lost, might as well rest everyone again tonight. We looked like we dont care anyways
Bonds has hit 754
@110
Bobby will never go against the convential wisdom unless it is to play a crappy non hitting veteran over a clearly superior player. That may be in the book though. It’s a pretty dumb book.
4 innings 0 hits – good job guys
Arizona only has two guys hitting over .280 and only 3 guys hitting over .250, but yet we find ourselves down 6-0 and we dont have a hit
since we have no chance of winning this game, we might as well make Reyes suffer and throw 110-120 pitches. EAt some innings and save the pen
Reyes 91 mph straight fastball isnt very impressive, they are destroying his pitches.
Harrison next? Villareal?
Cormier
Cormier probably

That clinches Julio’s roster spot through 2011.
I’ll celebrate Julio with you, csg. He made Thorman look like a chump.
still Franco showed he’s more useful than Thorman
If you had to cut one today who would it be
Franco or Thorman
Thorman easily. At least Franco is likable.
need some good innings out of Paronto
Probably Thorman sadly. He’s had more than a year to prove himself now and all he’s good at is being pissed off. Franco is a leader in the clubhouse. I can’t help but wonder what kind of negative energy Thorman might carry in the clubhouse.
If we get a reliever via trade, who do we send down? Paronto?
I actually thought Thorman would do ok, maybe he needs another year? another year and franco might die of old age
Yeah. Franco has totally rearranged the furniture in the clubhouse according to the principles of Feng Shui. He’s also helping everyone get their chakra in order. We can afford to give up an inning plus worth of offense per game for that.
Probabyl Ledezma, he’s been useless and our trade would probably be for a loogy. Paronto has been very good since May, also he’s out of options and I doubt he’d clear waivers right now
Yeah, cause we have really been tearing it up since Julio came back. HAH
@ 138
At least we know that Julio would go to heaven since he plays that Jesus music before he comes to the plate.
Maybe that’s the secret, McCann can only throw out runners going to third.
anyone notice that the Ari 1B coach had a glove on. I bet we’ll see that more often after what happened this week
Well, I think it’s time to cut bait. Even though we’re in the worst division in the Majors, and not out of it, I’m not willing to mortgage the future to have the privilege of getting swept by the Dodgers or brewers in the first round of the playoffs.
I’m in favor of holding onto our prospects, and if we can sneak into the WC with what we have, then great. Let AJ go over the off-season, bank the Supplemental picks, and let’s reload for ’08 and ’09.
anyone think Reyes gets another start? I dont, I bet Cormier gets the call
atta boy Druw
BMAC!!!!!
cmon Frenchy
Hey, we’re actually back in it.
Julio isn’t a spiritual healer or anything, but you get my drift. Nice hit, Mac.
As I recall, Cruz made the Braves look horrible the last time he pitched against them.
Seat Painter,
You’ve given up. You freaking say that the Braves are not out of it, but you give up. Saltalmacchia won’t be used, we won’t know what Andrus will do in the majors until about 2014, and clearly, our starting prospects aren’t too great. Make the damn trade!
anyone see Matthews Jr robbing Detroit of a Grand SLam in the 1st tonight? That would have made it 6-0
“I dont, I bet Cormier gets the call”
Please don’t tell me the Braves are still counting on this guy based on his spring training performance. Adsurd.
MLB.com says the Braves are trying to get Garland still. Maybe?
I hope Cormier’s arm falls off.
I’m glad Seat Painter ain’t the GM.
I wonder why Bobby never liked Cruz, he hardly ever used him unles it was a Villareal type game
Why not walk Kelly Johnson? You know Cruz can easily handle Franco.
Dan,
Because managers don’t rely on stats or strategy, they rely on feelings ;P
WEll, that’s just as good as a walk.
KJ, way to take one for the team
Garland has shoulder problems, I wouldnt give up much for him
daaaamn it. I hate having Julio up here with runners on and a chance to REEEALLY get back in it. PROVE ME WRONG, JULIO!
That untucked his shirt! Wow!
Dan, thats a good question. Hopefully they’ll hit Julio also
Oh no….Franco! Why not Saltalamacchia or even Thorman?!
Wow, Franco missed that pitch by 6 inches.
thorman already hit one about 1 foot tonight, he’s done
Buahahah, wtf was he swinging at?
Wonder how many ABs Julio’s 2out RISP is.
Julio looks so freaking dumb with that stance of his. Just retarded.
JULIO!! JULIO!!!
WOOOOOHOOOOHOOOOHOOO!!!
I do not believe what I just saw!
JULIO!!
JULIO JULIO JULIO
1 run game
Julio!
so much for Thorman, cmon Diaz park one
Wow.
Ok, Julio can look as retarded as he wants if he can keep doing that.
There is something different about Julio putting on that jersey. I have always been of that opinion.
Well, at least they got within one.
I wish I could bat like Julio.
who’s up in the Pen, Moylan? Yates? Ledez?
I wonder how much roids Julio needs to be able to compete in baseball at his age…
Julio is starting to earn his stay
Lots of them. I wouldn’t be surprised if he took them, actually. But I don’t really care.
Enough to stock a small pharmacy I’d bet.
lando, I dont know, but he’s probably in better shape than anyone else on the team
He’s earning his paycheck at any rate.
Sam, you like Bonds too don’t you?
csg, exactly my point.
Yates in the 6th?
Julio’s hip and knees would be hanging off his body if he used steroids for any period of time.
Rob, who says he’s been using them for more than since his first comeback to the majors with the Braves? I bet he started around then.
He’s not a power guy. He’s good for a single and the occasional double. He can flat out hit. Steroids have nothing to do with that. The fact that Bonds can hit 72 homers at 40 (?) raises an eyebrow or two, not Julio playing at 48.
I’m not so sure Julio does anything except maybe eat some multivitamins, work out like a fiend, eat a low fat/high protein diet while avoiding fried foods, including munching down a one-dozen egg white omelet for breakfast.
Of course you do. Go bury your head in the sand with the other Bonds supporters.
From what I recall, Julio gets up at 3 or 4 in the morning to drink a protein shake.
Reyes era now sits at 8.20, he’s not ready
I loved that double by Franco, but I fear it could mean a lot more starts for him.
Cox: “No Mr. Schuerholz, we don’t need Teixeira. Julio Franco is a dynamic player whose veteran leadership and defense at first base are a huge asset to our postseason chances.”
Hey, I’m not saying that Bonds didn’t do it. In fact, I’m quite sure he did. I’ve just chosen not to care.
Who was that aimed at, Lando?
lol, so in an age when so many players are doping you think a 49 year old player isn’t? That’s funny.
atta boy Yates, cmon offense
Ah, nevermind.
I’m glad Franco doubled, but I too go by the numbers. Franco’s numbers (OPS of 530 entering the game) are far from acceptable. Even with a 2 for 3 game tonight, Franco far from earning his keep.
Sam, that’s what burying your head in the sand is all about, not caring.
A lot of adverse effects from steroids occur in players’ 40s, that’s all. I’m not Julio’s drug dealer, so I dont’ know.
Well, if he is, punish him. That’s it. So there.
i bet we can easily find pictures of when Barry was small and look at him now.
Has Julio always been about this size? I really have no idea.
csg,
Actually, I think he has been that size his whole career. He has been a pretty skinny guy his entire career
Lando, that’s BS and I’ll call you on it. The guy works hard, eats right and lives well. Not even the hint of anything untoward has been said by any teammate past or present. It is weak to assume that because you can’t understand how something can be done, it must be done by cheating.
Yup, that’s it for sure.
http://www.homeruncards.com/imagesrc/juliofrancodon.jpg
keep the pressure on here guys
Who the hell cares if he did. People act like PEDs have the power to turn Pete Orr into Babe Ruth. Gimme a break.
Rob, nice find
Rob,
Yep, I was just going to say that.
Harris run here?
I have that card. *laughs* Nice one to have. 😉
If Snyder isn’t really Yadier Molina in disguise, then yes, try to run.
lol, so you know him personally? You guys seem to know an awful lot about Julio’s personal life…. You can’t say for sure that most players in MLB haven’t doped at one point or another so for anyone here to say 100% they haven’t is laughable.
This is why I chose to ignore steroids. Yes, it’s a problem, yes, deal with it, and that’s it. I hate getting into these kinds of discussions.
that was low
lol, he looks have his current size in that picture. Ever notice the melon head on Julio?
You guys are just like the Giants fan: “He’s our cheater so we don’t care what he does”
lame
that snake noise is annoying
No, lando, accusing someone of using just because they’re old and in shape is laughable. Get a clue.
Sam, you’re not discussing anything you just repeat the same “I don’t care” line.
that sucks
I don’t care.
If you have evidence against Julio, then that’s one thing. People have plenty of reasons to suspect Bonds. I have a lot of Giants fans as friends and they all hate him.
So much for that.
Crap. Willie Harris is killing us on the bases.
Dan, thats Bobbys call to run there
Just because? Ok Jeremy. So a huge melon head, being twice the size you were 20 years ago is just because, for you? Stick your head back in the sand.
what can we do to persuade bobby to stop sending willie?
Murphy,
Nothing, he’s too fast. Maybe he needs some STEROIDS to make him faster. 😛
The pitch was high and outside, a good pitch to throw on, so I don’t fault Willie or Cox for that. But it does suck.
how would you sleep at night knowing that you signed Barry Zito, his 5.25 era, to an $18 mil per year offer? He’s about to get his 11th loss
I feel that double play killed the Braves’ momentum.
Speed really does kill. All hail Bill James.
csg,
HAHAHAHA, that’s funny.
Dan,
That doesn’t mean we won’t have another momentum moment.
He’s four or five years past his best season. No one is really surprised that Zito is failing so miserably.
time to pull yates
Cox pushing his luck trying to sqeeze a second inning out of Tyler Yates.
What happened to Yates and Soriano? They both went south at the same time it seems.
I don’t think Cox has any choice. He burned a lot of pitchers last night, right?
cmon McCann!! keep the balls in front of you, how many times does this have to happen
Lovely. Another ball in the dirt butchered by McCann.
That thing was McCann’s fault.
yes it was, another backhand trying to block the ball, thats just ridiculous and they charges Yates with the wild pitch
Keep Salty and move McCann to 1B. He’s terrible back there.
if Moylan can hold them here, we win
We need some Moylan magic.
That second inning for Yates went well.
csg,
I doubt even Moylan can do that without giving up a run. I bet he can get out of it with at most one run given up.
Um, why didn’t Moylan start the inning Bobby
Because he had used him last night and hoped that he could get a rest.
how did Kelly have that much time, anyways good job
KJ!
wow, the runner never broke home.
good job Moylan
Yeah but Yates has been spent and struggling lately. He actually gives you a scoreless inning, and you throw him out there for second inning. Not good.
Only one more out. Come on Moylan!
Beautiful.
One more.
MOYLAN DID IT!
Moylan is a magician. That was exceptional
G’day mate!
CLUTCH!
Moylan is tremendous!
Holy DAMN, he’s good.
Yes why not just have Moylan start the inning and avoid that whole mess. Amazing.
give the man a raise!!
Bobby really didnt manage this inning very well, sending Willie and bringing out Yates again
GREAT JOB!!!
If there’s such thing as momentum we have it now.
I really hope he gets a couple token RoY votes. Not the top spot, but somewhere in the top 10. He’s been crucial to the Braves’ pen this year.
Julio threw Moylan a strike there
I think there is such a thing as momentum, especially in football.
And to think he didn’t start the year with the team.
Moylan saved McCann from his error also
Lucky
“LEAPING GRAB AT THE WALL!”
Shut the hell up Chip Caray.
McCann is locked in. Damn.
Kenny Williams is shitting himself for trading Young.
Mac do something big here
I’m really not that impressed with that catch. Am I alone there?
it was a good catch
heh…
Chip thinks the flyball Frenchy just hit was “deep.”
typical.
well thats a rally killer
and Chip that was 2 balls to center not 3
“it was a good catch”
Good? Yes. Worthy of the way Chip Caray reacted? No.
Jeff’s been huge with two outs all year long, says Chip. Bah. No, he hasn’t. He’s at his WORST with two outs.
Fair enough. Maybe Andruw has spoiled me all these years.
Cmon Braves…they deserve some good karma for how they’ve played this game.
Oooooo, Moylan’s still out there.
he kind of stepped into that ball didnt he?
I guess Bobby didnt learn about the 2nd inning for his relievers, did he
Oh, shit, it’s Tony Clark.
csg,
Moylan usually does just fine with two or more innings.
While it looked like it in the end…I think he just didn’t want to fall on his face.
It goes back to the 1996 WS, csg. No surprises here.
Moylan has gone 10 apperances this season where he has gone two or three innings and not given up a run.
I thought Cox would go with Soriano here. That’s what he’s for and this is a big game.
Yeah, and he has given up some taters lately.
Valverde is 31 of 34 this year, I think we can get to him though
I didn’t realize Soriano was in the dog house.
I thought Valverde wasn’t that great?
2.48 era 40IP 16BB 46K
looks pretty solid
Hm. Shows what I know.
BOO YEAH
Oh that feels good!
Valverde blowing the save would feel even greater.
Whew.
Valverde has converted 31 of 34 save chances. He’s due to blow one.
With that inning and the bases loaded no outs inning, can we officially say we have the momentum? If we don’t score here, I may not believe in momentum any more.
rally cap time!!
Salty has to hit for the pitcher doesnt he?? Or are we going to save him again
If Woodward pinch hits I’ll go ape shit.
Ooooooo, he could be a bit rusty.
Ill take 4 straight walks
Do you actually want to trust Salty in this situation? But I’d bet he’ll go up. Remember, Bobby loves his lefty-righty.
That snake sounds like a leaky steam pipe.
who else could we use? Escobar
All up to Salty to keep the inning going, I guess.
Yunel Escobar on base? Did Saltalamacchia die?
Escobar is on deck
On deck I mean.
Escobar, he said.
I guess we’re still in talks for Salty. These talks are costing us wins right now however
So close, yet so far…..
okay, all up to Escobar. I don’t have my hopes up.
Might as well trade Salty. He’s just rotting away on the bench.
give us something to cheer about escobar
Salty struck out with a man on third and one out in that SF game. He’s not the messiah of pinch hitting.
“Salty struck out with a man on third and one out in that SF game. He’s not the messiah of pinch hitting.”
No but he’s a lot more likely to go deep than Escobar.
We’re down by a run with two outs in the ninth. I’d rather send someone up there that has a chance to hit it out of the ballpark.
Salty can change things with one swing, Escobar cant
Psssh, that wasn’t “high”, that was off the plate. But the walk is nice.
Would you hit Salty for harris
sweet
Wow, what was that?
wow that was awesome
how about that!!!! Escobar just stole 2nd
Come on Harris….
Diaz already gone, so you cannot pinch hit for Harris.
AHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHA
1 base hit, we’re due!!!!!
good thing he made sure he made it
dan, true forgot about that..Walk here Harris I want Renty up
Even if we don’t win, that sure was great.
i agree… get renteria up there
The problem wasn’t with having Escobar hit in the 9th. The problem was Franco–Escobar should have hit for him and then Salty should have hit for Moylan.
…i love it.
valverde’s rattled (must be that stupid snake rattle noise that’s getting to him)
Take two pitches, Willie.
Take another one, Willie.
That was inside! Boo!
come on….. be consistent… that was ball 4 to escobar
Rob,
Well, he took those two pitches. Now can he actually hit it?
TIE GAME!
yes!!!!!!!!!
jhgjhgkjgfjhfcdhgdjhgfdhgfjhjhjhjhgfhgfdsdgfs!!!!!!
YES!!!!!!
YEs!!!!!
WILLIEEEE!!!!!!!!
ESCOBAR AND HARRIS TIE THE GAME
HOLY CRAP
when he hit it i thought it was all over for sure!
A WILLIE DUNKER!
CMON RENTY PARK ONE!!!
UNFUCKINGBELIEVABLE!!!!
Yes he can, Sam! That was HUGE!
do you send willie here?
that was amazing
WAAA-HOOO!
Bobby dont send Harris here
(i don’t send willie… don’t take the bat out of renteria’s hands)
We came back from 7 runs. We want it, man.
well Yunel, your the man tonight
I think that even if the Braves lose this game, this has got to be HUGE motivation for the rest of the season
FUCK YEAH.. I’m loving this game!
there’s no losing htis game now
you freaking douche
what!!!
Willie….come on.
CRAP!
DAMN IT!!!
Oh, common….
fuck Willie…
sheesh
We lose now?
Oh well, csg.
Still, what awesome baseball. Glad I stuck around to see it.
Willie Harris…no more steals, ever. Please.
He may have been safe, but still, let Renty hit!!
I have never seen willie steel a base, it must be an urbun legend
we appreciate the bloop hit willie… but um, we’re going to have to break your legs now
Magic of DVR: He was not only safe, but obviously safe.
urban*
That was a mood killer. I’m ready to accept a walk-off loss now.
He had no reason to do that IMO. If Renty hits a gapper he might have still scored.
Who pitches now? Do we gamble on Bob?
Yunel Escobar must have an IQ higher than a hundred and fifty
!@#$
what a way to lose momentum . let Renteria hit, for fuck’s sake!!!!
What the hell…looked like Willie Mayes Hayes from Major League with that.
What the hell?
If nothing else, the trade value just went way up on someone.
who’s pitching, Soriano? Wickman?
if we can hit again, middle of our order, I like our chances
Well, Soriano’s up. He’s not Wickman.
Soriano scares me here
!!!!!!!!!!!!
we better win this game
mac, even if willie was in there… i just don’t like the decision. let renteria hit
Renty, Chipper, and Druw in the 10th. If we don’t do it then, it ain’t happening.
whew! … thought McCann was gonna slip on home plate. that thing can be slick sometimes
No goat on Soriano tonight, FWTW.
I didn’t like those fastballs. Someone might get a shot down the line for a home run.
Everyone is giving credit to Escobar, and I agree he deserves some, but it looks like Glenn Hubbard told him to go there.
I like our offense in extras over theirs, we have to get there though
hubbard’s always been a pimp
Dan, I saw that also
Very observant, urlhix.
well Soriano is about to walk sommeone batting .158
Don’t walk Jeff DaVanon for God’s sake.
Hubbard could have talked to him about anything, like he does to anyone who reaches first base.
I miss Mike Gonzalez.
a guy hitting a damn .158 gets walked
reynolds is a K waiting to happen
dp here, please. we need a payback from those Rich Aurilla home runs and that guy Skip’s HR from St Louis
Take that McCann haters.
Yeah, Hubby was a big part of it. Pimp is the word.
Out by 3 feet. How many people have been thrown out this game? At least 4 now.
sorry csg, didn’t see your post
5 with Willie’s 2 I think.
WHEE FREE BASEBALL
there we go
McCann 3-3 throwing out runners tonight. Your .158 hitter walks and then you send him. Bad decisions by the managers tonight
i think soriano’s been doing better since he shaved that fuzz off of his chin.
and they must have gotten a live chicken this time…
Nice work.
Someone must have told Soriano that he has no marbles.
nice
Getting back to Yunel pinch hitting for Salty Dog…really makes me think a deal is either imminent or done. Why else would Bobby not opt for a lefty with power to tie the game up?
If it was just gut instinct and had nothing to do with a trade of any sort, than Bobby is more of a genius that I thought.
dont play around here, just score 3 or 4 and lets call it a night. I have to work tomorrow
i think that pitch went 55′ max
So…the fact that Salty didn’t pinch hit suggests that a deal was made but not announced? How does that work?
Tom I think your right
it doesn’t necessarily mean the deal has happened… they just don’t want to take any chances with the main trade chip
Now, why did he swing at that?
no idea
not made, but still in the works
Yunel has been fairly good in the clutch. I was pretty comforted with his decision. Salty hasn’t been amazing in big situations. I believe he is around 0-8 with the bases loaded…not that it has always been an important situation.
Dammit
Tom H.,
Hey, it’s always nice when a plan comes together.
take him deep chipper
How do you go 2 and 1 in four extra innings games?
1-2 and this is the fourth.
this is the 4th one
Freaking Tony Clark.
Ah, that makes more sense.
Jack one, Andy.
I hope he proves me wrong, but I have no faith in Druw here.
How do you go 2 and 1 in four extra innings games?
you get Chip to do your math
Andruw’s making a run for the Mendoza line again. Teixiera looks better and better.
we’ve only struck out twice tonight, that may be a record
Little nervous that we couldn’t scratch off of such a weak relief pitcher. Oh well.
Chip: “They drafted him as a non-drafted free agent.”
He’s just not too bright.
Is it just me or do you see Brian McCann spitting in the dugout every time there’s a shot of him in the dugout?
this guy scares me
Okay, so Jo Jo clearly isn’t ready for the majors. If we trade Davies in that Tex deal (last i looked anyways), are we really stuck with Jo Jo or Cormier as our #5 and James as our #3?
Who, Drew? Well, he’s supposed to be good.
They said that the last guy to have 3 CS in a game was Javy Lopez in 1995. Scary.
Rob,
No, there could be another trade.
Yay, an out!
No one is the “final hope” if you’re the home team in a tie game in extra innings. I’m starting to agree with you about Chip, braves14.
He is a doofus. But he’s OUR doofus.
I hope so, Sam.
Or the Cubs’ rejected one.
good job from the pen tonight…how about some more offense!
WHOO
Well, Chip’s our doofus now.
way to make the call against the home team ump
McCann, Francoeur and Johnson. Maybe they can do what the top three couldn’t.
I have a good feeling about Francouer this coming inning. He seemed like he wanted a piece of this action before Harris got the big bloop hit. Just a gut feeling.
We’ll need at least five runs to make it safe for Wickman these days.
Nice work by Soriano.
I forgot that Cox never wants to use the back-up catcher in pinch hitting spots. I guess that is why Cox used Escobar instead of Saltalamacchia.
I hope Pena replaces Woodward after a trade is made.
I think Joe Simpson is filling out the paperwork to adopt Escobar.
Chip, it’s not a pop. It’s a “fly”.
Man…that last commercial break was entirely Dane Cook-free…quite refreshing. QUITE.
No Dane Cook here in NY.
Nevermind then.
Geez, Frenchy, that was uglier than Corey Hart.
what in the world was the catcher doing there
Boomer,
Some good feeling you had. Maybe it was gas? 😉
hey ump wait a little longer to make the call
Maybe it wore off? I dunno I’m just floundering here.
so close
dang
Another warning track fly. Who the hell is going to pitch now?
Chip Caray, that didn’t even look like a homerun for one second.
tell me it’s not fredo
I’m scared to ask who’s pitching next.
… oh lord. Ledezma or Wickman are left.
This game is lost. I’m going to go brush my teeth.
Ledezma?
crap… it’s fredo
Villarreal hasn’t pitched yet (Yes, I know he pitched yesterday)
Yep, Ledezma. I’m going to go brush my teeth.
i think i’d rather see smoltz come out and pitch left handed in the bullpen on his off days…
