I’m moving to the east coast – Maryland anyway – from the Midwest and have been excited about seeing the Braves in a few of their rivals’ ballparks this September. Hopefully, when I do, there will still be a chance for the playoffs. (if not, how long until the inevitable ‘why did we trade Salty?’ comments begin popping up?)
In response to some of the comments in the other thread, (1) I do think the Braves are among the mediocre teams in the NL but (2) don’t think the NL is as bad this year as it has been during years past. “Parity” does not necessarily mean mediocrity for a league; it merely gives the impression of mediocrity. Of course, I haven’t seen the NL-AL splits from interleague play – wasn’t it recently that the AL won like 70%? – and I would take the contenders from the AL in a heartbeat. But the NL West and East are both improving again while the Brewers and Cubs look to be “ok” over the miserable Central.
so far salty is hitting under 100, so those comments will be quiet for a while. Obviously i would like salty to do well for him, but if he is a bust, its just another masterstroke for JS, bad thing is, no one will trade prospects with JS anymore
The report was that it was Wickman for Farnsworth + all of Farnsworth’s salary (though I’m not sure if that included next year’s, too). The Yanks reportedly balked at the money aspect of it.
Andruw Jones hyperextended his elbow back in MAY against the Phillies. He’s been playing hurt all year and it’s only until now that it’s bothering him.
you people are funny. The guys been playing hurt all year with out complaining and your getting on him. Give the guy a break. He’s doing on one arm what many of you couch potatoes wish you could do with two.
Also, for those able to watch this game on TV, is the home plate ump’s strike zone as huge as Gameday is making it out to be? It looks like balls in the dirt and in the other batter’s box are being called strikes…
Yep, Diaz needs to be playing every single day. If he’s our regular LF next year, I won’t be upset.
In other news, Carroll Rogers reports that Willy Aybar has re-joined the team after successfully completing a substance abuse program. Not sure what level in the minors or whether he’s expected to contribute to the big club this season.
I mean, he’s like 24, right? Maybe 23? Surely he’d be able to contribute at least what Prado could offensively, and my understanding is that he’s superior defensively.
I cannot believe how little respect the Braves (or Devil Rays or the Royals) give Diaz. This guy deserves to be playing everyday. Nothing about his numbers says “platoon player”.
The Braves will probably try to sell Diaz to a Japanese team again this offseason.
“I cannot believe how little respect the Braves (or Devil Rays or the Royals) give Diaz. This guy deserves to be playing everyday. Nothing about his numbers says “platoon playerâ€.”
and nothing about willie’s stats say that he should be riding pine either. face it, it’s a win/win situation. diaz gets plenty of respect from the organization that is responsible for his success.
willie gets on base 40% of the time, has incredible speed, and is a better defender. diaz has a better ba, but less speed, and less obp. neither of the guys should be benched, so dan, what would you suggest? 4 outfielders?
Respect doesn’t involve attempting to sell Matt Diaz, who has a newborn son, to a baseball team in Japan.
“Well thanks for hitting .327 in 297 at-bats for us in 2006 Matt, but this team in a foreign country is willing to give us $600,000 dollars for you, so….later.”
dan, he gets respect, in the clubhouse. he platoons on a playoff contending team when his defense is considered “shaky”. i guarantee if he was playing with other organizations, he would not be getting the respect that the braves give him. i really dont understand this “always die” attitude you, mr. swings, and disgruntled fan share.
diaz has 19 extra base hits. willie harris has 20. yes, diaz has more “power” when you talk about the long ball, but their slugging % is not that far apart when you factor in willie’s triple tonight.
The really nice thing about having Tex is that even with Renteria, Chipper, and Druw hurting, we still have a credible threat in the offense. How would it look without Tex, Renteria, Chipper, and Druw? Can you picture:
CF Harris
SS Escobar
2b Johnson
C McCann
RF Frenchy
LF Diaz
1b Thor
3b Woodward
P
Please!! And I don’t want to consider the lineup without McCann either.
yes, the thumb..they said its black and blue all around that thumb again. Andruw had a cortizone shot in his elbow today and Bobby said he would be out until the Mets series, however, Andruw says he wants to play tomorrow. Im guessing he wont
Orr would be much better as a call-up by another team. But if he must be called-up, let it be in September. I’d rather see Lillibridge, even though I doubt he’s really ready.
Has anybody else had MLBTV start over without warning during a game? It’s happened in the last few I’ve watched and I have to reload it a few times a game…
who is Richmond’s catcher right now? I’ve heard talks of Pena playing LF and 1st, but the only other catchers on the roster are Miller and Iker Franco who’s batting a cool .204
In my own defense, I must say I’m not really all that negative. This all started with ryan c lumping me in with others here due to me saying Diaz deserves more playing time. Not really negative is it?
I’ve never called the Braves a .500 team. I’ve never called them mediocre, or said that they aren’t contenders, or that they should be sellers like many others have.
Don’t know if it’s been discussed yet, but how do you feel about us missing a few waiver line SPs. The Diamondbacks got Kim and Joe Kennedy. Think we should have chanced on either of those guys over our current fifth starter woes?
Ya know, Francouer in CF, Diaz in LF, and Harris in RF might be a pretty decent OF if Harris can keep up what he’s done. Not a whole lot of power, but that’s what we have the infield for…
I don’t know, csg. On second thought, Harris’ offense would look better in center, and Francouer’s arm would be more valuable in right. I suppose it boils down to which one has the better range. I dunno. Either way, that OF, wherever they play exactly, wouldn’t be that bad. Plus it would be super cheap.
wow! and i thought bobby made the right move by pitching dotel in the 8th rather than soriano. In a close game would you rather dotel or soriano pitch the 8th?
You know how whenever Chipper is out of the lineup they talk about Andruw stepping up to match his production? Apparently, the same thing is true in converse. Three swinging strikeouts, now pulling that weak-ass grounder.
Chipper’s 2 for 16 since the Teix acquisition, if my math is correct. 5 walks in that time, but he’s stopped hitting. Just imagine this offense with Chipper raking.

I think Salty will hit in the future. I’d be shocked if he fell off a cliff.
Sample size. Salty’s the real deal. He’ll hit.
The guy is 22 and he got thrown in a new league, new team, new park, new pitchers. Let him adjust to that.
I know, I agrea, but you never know, what if he isnt as good as everyone says?
Also, can you believe the reports that say JS offered Wickman for Farnsworth strait up at the deadline?!
I don’t believe it because surely the Yankees would have taken that.
The report was that it was Wickman for Farnsworth + all of Farnsworth’s salary (though I’m not sure if that included next year’s, too). The Yanks reportedly balked at the money aspect of it.
Cubs up 2-0 over the Mets in the bottom of the third.
Maine chased. Cubs lead 6-0 in the bottom of the third.
Let’s just get a win tonight behind Hudson. Something like 5-3 sounds fine to me. Huddy goes 7 then Dotel + Wiki.
Cole Rohrbough has been promoted from Danville to low-A Rome.
http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/?p=515
Andruw out of the line up for a few days according to Yahoo! Wonderful….
Kyle Davies got shalacked today too. I think he is done
Lineup tonight:
CF Harris
2B Johnson
3B Chipper
1B Teixeira
C McCann
RF Francoeur
LF Diaz
SS Escobar
P Hudson
no andruw
Andruw Jones hyperextended his elbow back in MAY against the Phillies. He’s been playing hurt all year and it’s only until now that it’s bothering him.
Jesus F. Christ
Well, Mets lost.
The Mets lost, so the Braves have a chance to get a game back.
Andruw playing hurt since May is all the excuse Boras will need to ask 18-20 million a year for him. Lovely.
you people are funny. The guys been playing hurt all year with out complaining and your getting on him. Give the guy a break. He’s doing on one arm what many of you couch potatoes wish you could do with two.
Also, Andruw gets paid.
huh???
Question:
Do y’all think JS still would have done the Teixeira trade if he’d known Edgar and Andruw would be going down now?
I’d probably still do the trade, but I’m curious to see what others on here think.
Yes Stu b/c next year we keep Tex. Plus we are a LONG way from being out of this…
This kid is good.
Also, for those able to watch this game on TV, is the home plate ump’s strike zone as huge as Gameday is making it out to be? It looks like balls in the dirt and in the other batter’s box are being called strikes…
You know, we could be getting a preview of the 2008 Braves opening day lineup tonight.
Stu,
His strike zone is prob. pitcher friendly but it’s not that bad.
Thanks, Jake.
Stu and Jake, yes his zone is bad, real bad. He called tex out on a pitch that was way inside and gave Huddy a K on someone’s ankles
DIAZ!!!
If Willie Harris is the everyday centerfielder next year, that will be a very bad thing, especially since he’s completely hopeless against lefties.
Diaz can flat out rake. He’s beyond sample size, now…
Yep, Diaz needs to be playing every single day. If he’s our regular LF next year, I won’t be upset.
In other news, Carroll Rogers reports that Willy Aybar has re-joined the team after successfully completing a substance abuse program. Not sure what level in the minors or whether he’s expected to contribute to the big club this season.
Andruw hopes to be back tomorrow. Even if that’s not so, I don’t think he’ll be out for long.
I’d like to point out that tonight we’re playing with a 3 man bench…consisting of Thor, Woody, and Corky
I’m glad we kept Escobar after all. Seeing Prado starting at SS would be enough to drive me off the brink.
Looks like we’ll see a Chuck James PH.
Which means it’s a 2-man bench, since Corky won’t be used unless we make it to the 11th inning.
we signed ryan drese to a minor league deal. i pray to the gods above that he is not the 5th starter solution.
RobBroad4th,
I strongly suspect Lillibridge would have been called up after Renty went on the DL, if Yunel had been traded.
And arguably none of them are MLB caliber.
alluding to the bench
Stu,
Is he ready for the bigs? (Not that it would really matter in that situation considering the alternatives).
I mean, he’s like 24, right? Maybe 23? Surely he’d be able to contribute at least what Prado could offensively, and my understanding is that he’s superior defensively.
Regardless, I’m sure they’re preparing him in a hurry this year.
I cannot believe how little respect the Braves (or Devil Rays or the Royals) give Diaz. This guy deserves to be playing everyday. Nothing about his numbers says “platoon player”.

Don’t forget Diaz has more power. Willie Harris will be lucky to end this season with two homeruns.
Chipper’s certainly cooled off since Teix arrived.
dan, he gets respect, in the clubhouse. he platoons on a playoff contending team when his defense is considered “shaky”. i guarantee if he was playing with other organizations, he would not be getting the respect that the braves give him. i really dont understand this “always die” attitude you, mr. swings, and disgruntled fan share.
so we get Tex and two games later Renty, Chipper, and Andruw all hurt themselves. NICE!!
good to have Aybar back hopefully he’s better
Chipper’s hurt? Or are you just talking about the thumb injury from the extra inning game?
diaz has 19 extra base hits. willie harris has 20. yes, diaz has more “power” when you talk about the long ball, but their slugging % is not that far apart when you factor in willie’s triple tonight.
stu, he is referring to the thumb. joe just said chipper’s thumb was REALLY black and blue.
The really nice thing about having Tex is that even with Renteria, Chipper, and Druw hurting, we still have a credible threat in the offense. How would it look without Tex, Renteria, Chipper, and Druw? Can you picture:

Ah, thanks.
yes, the thumb..they said its black and blue all around that thumb again. Andruw had a cortizone shot in his elbow today and Bobby said he would be out until the Mets series, however, Andruw says he wants to play tomorrow. Im guessing he wont
sorry Ryan didnt see your post
do you think Corky will ever get a start? I hope not
I bet he starts for Chuck.
I dont know with Monday as an off day, he might not
good job Yunel
Huddy just fouled one off into some lady’s forehead, she’s in pain
terrible call on that pitch, how was it on gameday
So Kyle Davies gave up #500 to Alex Rodriguez? HAHAHAHAHA!
When KJ is on, it is a beautiful thing to watch. Heck, if he was on all the time, he’d be the greatest player ever.
Anyone notice that Andruw’s name is spelled wrong in the link for the story on braves.com??
Someone better get fired. That’s all I’m saying…
“Braves notes: Andrew to miss next two games”
ugh
Maybe they can all go to a spa on Monday and just chill out.
Andrew??
Spell check strikes again!
Huddy dominate so far, who all wanted to trade him again. Where would our rotation be without him right now
Huddy is filthy tonight.
I remember talk of trading him in the off-season, but I doubt that will happen now.
how ’bout our first complete game!!!!
Hudson’s nasty
Bobby said that we would go back to 12 pitchers for the Mets series…anyone feelig an Orr call up?
no please no
Most likely the weekend in August copy desk manned by an intern strikes again.
Orr would be much better as a call-up by another team. But if he must be called-up, let it be in September. I’d rather see Lillibridge, even though I doubt he’s really ready.
Either way, “Andrew” looks strange.
That was probably not intentional, but it doesn’t matter. When a guy hits a homer and then gets hit twice in succession, there better be retaliation.
Has anybody else had MLBTV start over without warning during a game? It’s happened in the last few I’ve watched and I have to reload it a few times a game…
who is Richmond’s catcher right now? I’ve heard talks of Pena playing LF and 1st, but the only other catchers on the roster are Miller and Iker Franco who’s batting a cool .204
yep, Huddy better nail Helton or someone for this
That did not even resemble a strike, though it was a better pitch than the 1-0 to Willie.
Ill take a walk here Huddy!
take 3 pitches here
HUDDY!!!
Yes!
atta boy Willie
this is an exciting bunch tonight
Willie just made a diving catch and hurt his wrist, he’s staying in for now
would an outfield of Thorman, Diaz, Francouer scare anyone?
You can almost just see the Hudson going for the complete game, loading the bases in the ninth, and Wickman blowing it.
Dan, watch your mouth
With Francouer in center? Could be worse, but I don’t want to think about it.
dan, i now crown you negative nancy. congrats.
Do I get a prize?
You get a negative prize.
That’s a good way to describe Woodward I think.
So I must respectfully decline the crown.
Nice DP. That was huge.
Don’t know if it’s been discussed yet, but how do you feel about us missing a few waiver line SPs. The Diamondbacks got Kim and Joe Kennedy. Think we should have chanced on either of those guys over our current fifth starter woes?
So, with Cormier up does that mean he’s the #5 or do we go with the Vulture?
Mil came back to beat the Phils 6-5. Gordon with the loss
Ya know, Francouer in CF, Diaz in LF, and Harris in RF might be a pretty decent OF if Harris can keep up what he’s done. Not a whole lot of power, but that’s what we have the infield for…
Cormier is the #5, BX no not really, they didnt get much
woulndt Harris be better in CF over Francouer?
Wow, how would you feel if you were Adam Kennedy? La Russa batted his pitcher 8th and Kennedy 9th.
Oh boy.
I’m a little tired of Garret Anderson grand slams in the 8th inning…
Wow, how would you feel if the Braves gave this game away?
Throw some gas on that fire, Bobby.
dont ruin this for Huddy
WHo was the pitcher?? IF it was Wainwright i would be ok with it ha
I don’t like Garrett Atkins. Three-run bomb yesterday and a Grand Slam today.
118 — Dotel.
Dotel doing his best second-half Soriano impression. Let’s see Soriano do his best first-half Soriano impression.
wow! and i thought bobby made the right move by pitching dotel in the 8th rather than soriano. In a close game would you rather dotel or soriano pitch the 8th?
120
he’s talking about the cardinals game
and what a catch by McCann
That helps.
Yeah sorry gotta refresh my pages but yeah thanks Braves 14 still wanted to know that
I wish Garret Atkins were Brad Hawpe or Troy Tulowitzki. At least then my fantasy team would have something to show for this.
Please just keep Soriano out there for the 9th. Please.
2 run lead enough? do you let Wickman close another close one for Huddy?
I was just about to say that my fantasy team is on fire because of TEx and Atkins weird
Well after a traumatic 30 hr flight, the last thing I need is another blown save. Please no.
Melbourne is very cool (60 tops), and sort of a colonial small town for a big city.
JoeyT,
Why?
I wish Moylan was our closer he’s the only bullpen i trust at this point
csg,
Wickman’s been perfect at home so far. I’d put this game in his hands.
wickman closes it out
have faith
KJ keeps on hitting
i want at least one more here
You know how whenever Chipper is out of the lineup they talk about Andruw stepping up to match his production? Apparently, the same thing is true in converse. Three swinging strikeouts, now pulling that weak-ass grounder.
Chipper’s 2 for 16 since the Teix acquisition, if my math is correct. 5 walks in that time, but he’s stopped hitting. Just imagine this offense with Chipper raking.
My bad.
referring to 120
Wickamania
Chipper’s hurt…i hate it when injured players play anyway and suck, though we don’t really have a choice with this bench
interesting
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/wcStory?contentId=6534058&storyNumber=1
Are you saying Chris Woodward isn’t better than an injured Chipper?
Druw in CF
Marginal improvement if any…Chipper at least draws walks
How can Andruw play CF right now?
I was joking. Injured Chipper is definitely better.
Umm what kind of question is that???
Druw can catch fly balls on the beach
Wickman with some heat!
nice start wicki
Quinn just needs to sign and get to camp. He’s gonna make his money, and if he’s as good as he says he is, he’ll make even more. Tired of him already…
theres some retaliation
WOw not the right time
wha ‘appen?
What happened? Gameday crapped the bed…
Hit him on the knee.
just nailed him on the knee
Tulowitzki got hit by a pitch
Yeah go Fat BoB!!
sit on it
Don’t want to jinx it….but Wick looks good.
2K’s one more
We really need him to be. Hopefully he is.
I thought players weren’t supposed to do much right after they get cortisone shots, which is why I wondered what ‘Druw is doing out there.
one more…
ball game, good job fella’s
another great game for Huddy
Wick perfect at home
Come on!!
Wickmania!
I think Bob should have run that to first just to amuse me.
Wickmania!
lol
was matt holiday hurt? surprised they used taveras over holiday?…
wow.. even a grounder to the mound looks awful when Wickman does it
This home/away thing with Wickman is getting creepy.
I know nobody cares, but more fun with closed captioning: “A packed house here at Turner Feel.”
dance puppet dance!
Wickman’s been solid lately.
174 — Yes, Holliday is injured.
All’s well with the world, for the moment. Now to try and stay up for 10 more hours to try and beat thhe jet lag…
I agree, he needs to run more…they should have a team foot race. McCann, Corky, Wickman, and Paronto
they say Holliday will probably sit tomorrow also, are we going to get a Corky sighting tomorrow? or with Monday as an off day does McCann go
new thread
I missed Bonds’ HR by about 15 seconds. I was channel surfing and I just missed it. Stupid HSN…
