ESPN.com – MLB – Box Score – Marlins at Braves
I liked the first game better. Rick Vanden Hurk (who?) had a perfect game to two out in the fourth and a no-hitter to the seventh. I am getting tired of no-name pitchers dominating the Braves.
I’ve a feeling John Smoltz is as well. Smoltz pitched very well, allowing just three hits in six innings of work, striking out four and walking none. He allowed two runs though, one on a second inning homer and the other after a fourth inning double, and took the loss. Just to make sure the game got out of reach, Moylan gave up a run in the seventh and Villarreal two in the eighth.
Escobar broke up the no-hit bid in the seventh with a leadoff double. Following a Renteria walk, the Braves had a chance to get right back in it, but relievers got McCann, Andruw, and Francoeur to kill the threat. KJ drove in a run in the eighth to cut it to 5-1, but too little, too late.

“Really, the only thing disrespected in that tirade was 1st base. He should have taken all three.”
But you can’t steal 1st base. Come on now!
This little argument about Wellman is crazy. The only thing he did different from a classic Pinella tirade was the grenade thing. Every year or so a MAJOR league manager will chuck the bases in the outfield. But claiming that a jackass minor league manager throwing a rosin bag like a grenade, straight up WW2 style is direspectful to the military? THAT is the insane lunacy here. Have some fun with it. I have the highest respect possible for this amazing game, but this is the kind of shit that MAKES it amazing. It’s not all button down seriousness; it’s a suspension of reality. If Wellman threw a tirade like that here at my work with copy paper and a coffee mug, his ass would be fired like crazy sauce. Baseball is just different and awesome like that.
And yeah, I’m sure a lot of the players for Miss. will now laugh at him a little more and respect him a little less, but I’d bet money that almost all of them like him a lot more now. Didn’t you see quotes from the baby Braves who had recently played under him?
Disrespectful to the military…. jeezie. I’ll go tell my cousins/friends/everyone I know in the military to lay off the Medal of Honor, and the SOCOM, and the Ghost Recon, and the etc etc because that’s disrespectful too. Right after I drag them away from the massive Braves protest in Jackson.
On a lighter note, Wikipedia tells me this about Wellman, which I find totally awesome.
“In 1993, while managing the Lethbridge Mounties of the Pioneer League, Wellman once chose his starting lineup by pulling names out of a hat.”
@2
Maybe Bobby should try that. Maybe have Orr hit cleanup. It couldn’t hurt the way the Braves are hitting.
I don’t see why he doesn’t do that for the lineup AND defensive positioning. I still want to see Orr catch like they claim he can do.
mac,
i still think we need a “what’s really wrong with chipper” poll
At least there was a good game last night by the M-Braves. JoJo “The Bean” Reyes looked awesome like he has been all year. Pitched six scoreless innings to get to a 7-1 record.
Joey Devine got the save after allowing one of Ascanio’s baserunners to score to make it a save opportunity.
Diory Hernandez and Carl Lodenthal were the offense for the day.
I just hope the good Davies shows up today and not the bizarro Davies.
Also, if Orr plays, I bat Davies in front of him. And Woodward. And Prado.
Thanks Jorgbacca–it is always nice to get a report from the farm. Not only was Reyes on, but check out the work of Thomas Hanson at Rome. Mosies Hernandez wasn’t too bad either.
Diory Hernandez appears to be on the verge of putting together a breakout year….
Tommy Hanson has been lights-out. He needs a promotion, but pitchers park or no, the Ks don’t lie. His last performance was dominant, and if he can keep that up in A-ball, you’re looking at a top prospect in the very near future.
RE: Joey Devine got the save after allowing one of Ascanio’s baserunners to score to make it a save opportunity.
It either is or is not a save opportunity when a pitcher enters the game. Allowing a run to score doesn’t transform an nonsave opportunity into a save opportunity. If it were possible, saves would be an even more useless statistic.
