Okay, wake up, kids!
As I write this (Friday evening) I don’t know that we’ll actually play. Whatever. If the game is actually in and at a regular time, I should be able to recap. If not, double recap late tonight.
And now, as the first part of the double-header…
REM and the original lineup of Van Halen are linked, of course, as the two bands which had bass players named “Michael” who were better singers than the lead singers.
UPDATE: Oh, who knows? At some point these games will be played. Or they won’t. There’s another game thread scheduled in about six hours. In the meantime, Apache:
It’s not the version the Braves use, but maybe they could make a change.
There’s that 1st comment again..
Davey, you shouldnt be up this early, I’ll take the 2nd!
This was interesting.
While the Phillies haven’t made an official announcement, Braves manager Bobby Cox seems quite certain Friday’s game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Sunday. Whether it’s a day-night or traditional doubleheader will depend heavily on what the weather does to the day-night twin bill that had already been scheduled for Saturday.
“You’ve got to try to get them in as early as you can,” Cox said.
If rains force Saturday’s day-night doubleheader to be played as a traditional twin bill, the teams would likely play a day-night doubleheader on Sunday. This would allow the Phillies to at least get the proceeds from three different gates.
“You never like to go back-to-back [doubleheaders],” Cox said. “Somebody will have to go on short rest in New York. We’ll get through it OK.”
Cox plans to send Friday’s planned starter, Oscar Villarreal, to the mound for the first game on Saturday, which is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. Kyle Davies, who will be making his first appearance since having his right groin surgically repaired in May, will pitch the nightcap, which is slated to begin at 7:05 p.m.
If there is a doubleheader on Sunday, Cox plans to go with Tim Hudson in the first game and Lance Cormier in the second.
Obviously, all of these plans could go to waste if the predicted rainfall prevents the teams from playing at all on Saturday. If they were limited to one game, the Braves would then be forced to come back to Philadelphia on Sept. 25.
The Phillies, who are 3 1/2 games ahead of the Braves and just one game out of the National League Wild Card lead, wouldn’t have any travel issues if one of this weekend’s scheduled games needs to be made up later this month. They are at home from Sept. 18-24 and would only have to make the short trek to Washington for their Sept. 26 game against the Nationals.
“I think I’d rather have them come back, especially if you’re making a [playoff] push,” newly acquired Phillie Jeff Conine said. “[Playing consecutive doubleheaders] can mess up your [pitching] staff for a while.”
Sounds like Bobby wants to go ahead and get 4 games in the next 2 days. That would piss off the Phils…
big crowd here today
Yay for Michael Stipe?
still rainy and very windy in Phily!

that’s a lot of words that end in y!
1914 Update:
Boston Braves 65-51 (–)
NY Giants 63-51 (1 GB)
St. Louis Cardinals 64-58 (4)
Chicago Cubs 63-58 (4.5)
Brooklyn Robins 54-62 (11)
Cincinnati Reds 55-64 (11.5)
Philadelphia Phillies 53-63 (12)
Pittsburgh Pirates 53-63 (12)
Today’s Games:
Boston 030 020 011 – 7 11 0 WP- Rudolph
Philly 000 111 020 – 5 13 2 LP- Marshall
Boston 543 000 000 – 12 15 1 WP- James
Philly 100 100 001 – 3 7 3 LP- Tincup
To the Braves of today: hint, hint. The Braves leap into first place for the first time by sweeping this doubleheader. Rookie Ben Tincup was chased in the 2nd inning of game 2, replaced by another rookie in Joe Oeschger, famous for pitching a 26-inning complete game for the Braves in 1920. With results like this, there’s a reason Tincup would get only one start after this season.
Van Schuerholz songs for the Braves:
“Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Wins”
“Hitting Like the Devil”
“You Really Got Beat”
“Hurl the Game Away”
“Suck” (Might as well suck…)
“Langerhans”
“Cold for Roger”
“Why Can’t We Be Good”
“Dreams” (Decent pitching staff, of our game winning half, oh, that’s what dreams are made of…)
“Fans Walk Out”
“Fright Now” (There’s no tomorrow…)
Unlike Eddie and Alex’s band, we have a lead “singer” in Smoltz but no backup.
any updates on Today’s games, weather wise
GO JACKETS!!!!!!!
I don’t sleep csg… I wait…

is the braves game gonna get rained out again..it says its raining.
and no lineups have been posted.
Okay, I have to go in about an hour. I am guessing that at some point today the Braves and Phillies will play at least one game, but that’s just a guess. There’s another game thread scheduled at 6.
Theoretical Lineups:
Giles 2B
Renteria SS
CJones 3B
AJones CF
McCann C
Francoeur RF
LaRoche 1B
Langerhans LF
Villareal P
Rollins SS
Victorino CF
Utley 2B
Howard 1B
Burrell LF
Dellucci RF
Coste C
Nunez 3B
Lieber P
Man, the Bulldogs are really beating the tar out of WKU. They’ve already pulled JTIII a third of the way through the game.
I can’t agree about Mike Mills. That’s a pretty bold statement.
from DOB…
Anthony Lerew was brought up today for reinforcement. Probably only be here a couple days, just in case they need an extra arm. Not scheduled to start.
Still raining, but radar shows this should be ending within an hour, and after that it’s really clear. So there’s still a chance, maybe even a good chance, we’ll play two today. If I had to guess, I’d say start 2:30 or so.
Daryle Ward is here. Just talked to him. He’s not quite as large-and-in-charge as the Wickster, but he’s a big dude, for sure. Has missed no meals.
Took some shots at Washington and Frank Robinson, vs. Braves and Cox. Ward is very glad to be here.
Gile’s is “under the weather” so Orr is in the lineup
..per DOB
Unless you’re in a plane, aren’t you always under the weather?
That’s a joke, ma’am.
Yeah, that was worth waiting for. Thanks a heap, Oscar.
It’s going to be a long weekend. Good thing we picked up Daryle Ward instead of a starting pitcher. Sigh.
Btw, Yahoo reports the Braves called up Aybar, Davies, Thorman, Pena, Devine (blah), and Jordan (BLAH).
I sure am glad we moved Davies’ start to the night game so Villarreal could get his start in.
(sarcasm)
“Anthony Lerew was brought up today for reinforcement. Probably only be here a couple days, just in case they need an extra arm. Not scheduled to start.”
So we have Smoltz, Hudson, James, Lerew, Davies and somehow the two clowns (Villarreal and Cormier) are still getting starts?
man, how bout them hokies!!!!
How’d Orr end up on 2nd on a fielders choice ground ball?
-n
Langerhans was caught in a run-down between second and third base.
Villarreal has settled down, still would rather have him over Cormier
why do we look flat in 50% of our games, where’s the heart. This sucks, at least football starts today. I’m done w/ this
Making Jon Lieber look like Cy Young.
Why am I not surprised?
How many starting pitchers with an ERA over five have the Braves made look like Cy Young candidates this year? Come on.
we cant hit soft tossers
Ward fits in nicely
dward!
orr you suck….atta boy ward
Ha, i knew it would happen if I ripped the trade.
Heres that egg coming at my face.
Nice hit by Ward. He’s still not what the Braves really needed.
Ward > Orr
Game probably over. Bobby Cox is bringing in Tyler Yates.
Ugh.
Checking in, but now I have to go. Double recap midnightish.
Yates killing any chance of comeback.
That’s a good start.
C’mon Roach.
Roachy!!!!
YES!!! LAROCHE!
Woot.
Roachie!!
The French Connection delivers!
Jordan?
why is Brian Jordan back in a Braves uniform? It feels like a Kafka-esque Nightmare…
Ah, the magic of Brian Jordan. Was that worth waiting for or what? And don’t all say “What” at once.
Somehow I haven’t missed him.
Sometimes, when GAMEDAY says “Offensive substitution” they are all too right.
Now for our closer. Only a month in town, and they’ve already made a movie about him. Nicholas Cage seems kind of an odd choice to play “The Wickman,” but I respect…
What?
It’s called “The Wicker Man”?
Never mind.
If Brian Jordan didn’t just come off the DL, Bobby would have used him in LaRoche’s spot there.
WICKMANIA!!! Howard ate it!
Ballgame.
I’d like to think Charlie Manuel for pulling Burrell out of the lineup in the 7th inning, so they would have to bat Conine (and use up a pinch-hitter).
And the Wickman delivers again! Wow, this guy is good.
Great game. Now what lower life form are we starting in the 2nd game?
Wow..a win
Wow, who guessed that would have happened?
Great win. Go Adam!
Davies is starting the second game, Brian.
The storm knocked out my power, so I went to the gym. Couldn’t listen to the Dawgs, couldn’t listen to the Braves. Got to listen to the end of it on 1210, the Philly station—great finish.
Let’s play two.
Wait, we won? Wow, I didn’t expect that. See you later, kids.
