ESPN.com – MLB – Box Score – Braves at Marlins
Another good start for Tim Hudson, and the Braves beat up on Scott Olsen and coasted from there. After getting a run in the first when Renteria doubled home Orr (Marcus has an apparently minor injury). Hudson gave it back in the bottom of the inning on your standard single-wild pitch-steal of third-groundout, but didn’t allow another hit until the sixth.
Meanwhile, the Braves opened it up in the second. Adam “Platoon, Hell” LaRoche homered in Diaz to make it 3-1, and Chipper hit a two-run triple that just missed clearing that ridiculous wall. Olson left after Andruw walked, and the Braves put it on cruise control. They got one more run with Orr singling in LaRoche in the sixth.
There was a scary moment in the eighth when home plate umpire Jerry Layne was hit on the head by a broken Marlins bat. The game was delayed for thirteen minutes, and Hudson didn’t return after the delay. These thin-handled bats are a menace and should be outlawed. Baez finished the inning and Wickman pitched the ninth for the Atlanta Save.
LaRoche, Orr, and Renteria all had three hits. Everyone had one but Andruw (who was robbed in the first by a terrible umpiring call) and Francoeur (who sucks). Hudson allowed just four hits in all and two walks. He only struck out one, but I’ll take it.
Pete Orr swinging some mighty lumber tonight…
Hudson is back. Laroche is good. Francouer is drunk on his own spiked punch….the problem that ails him is of his own making.
Snakes on a Train….
Pete “Iron” Orr
In his postgame interview Orr was man enough to admit that he wasn’t helping the team very much earlier in the year. Good to see him turn it around a bit.
I actually saw Snakes on a Plane last night at Atlantic Station. We walked from Tech all the way there, about a mile, and got lost.
I really hope it becomes clear to Francoeur and the Braves organization that a radical change in his aproach if he’s ever going to become a great MLB player as opposed to just an adequate one, which think he will become if for no other reason than his fantastic arm and power.
Francoeur was 0 for 4, and the sun will rise in the east tomorrow.
Thanks for tuning into the Totally Obviously News Channel.
BTW,
Holyfield dominated…2nd round TKO.
Mike, does it say something about a movie when you go see it and all you mention to us is the walk to the theater?
As for Francoeur, does it seem like he is seeing more pitches? He’s still not walking, but in his two at bats I saw tonight, he definitely did not swing at several bad balls, getting ahead of the pitcher in both ABs. Of course, with the count in his favor he couldn’t do anything, but maybe these are baby steps.
Is anyone else slightly optimistic?
Is Mr. Swings@Everything this years’ DANNY?
I am not happy about his .254 AVG, his .278 OBP, 99 K and his 11 BB.
But what people seem to forget is, this is his first full season. He is only 22, give him a little more time before your asking for his head and saying he should be sent down. Not everyone starts their career like David Wright and Ryan Howard.
Mr. Swings@Everything is my new favorite poster. He may be even more fed up with Francoeur than I am, and I didn’t know that there were any such people.
Layne update, if anyone cares: x-rays negative, bruised jaw, groggy, will try to be in the game tomorrow. He got briefly knocked out but was walking around after the game.
jenny, you don’t call you don’t write…
It’s over, Smitty. I sent all your stuff back, including those nasty jeans you left in my closet. You can stop singing outside my window now, or I might have to get a restraining order.
😉
This is good news:
“Wickman said he doesn’t know who started rumors out of Cleveland that he will retire – “That [ticked] me off,” he sneered – and last week said he planned to pitch next season if he feels as good as he does now.
The Braves need to overhaul their beleaguered bullpen this winter, and Wickman said he’d consider re-signing with them if they’re interested.”

It sounds like he really likes his teammates. I would love Wickman to be a Brave in 2007. And who knew Wickman chewed tobacco while pitching?
Jay10, don’t dislike Frenchy’s 99 Ks. His SO/PA is only 19.0% (which is less than last year. To put in perspective, Howard’s ratio is 27.1%, and Andruw’s is 19.9%. His strikeouts aren’t a problem, especially for someone as young as he is and with as much power as he has. The problem is his walk rate and his BA. Considering his bad swings remind me of the old Andruw, I have hope (I just hope it doesn’t take Frenchy as long to figure it out).
Ouch, Smitty, re:#15, that had to hurt. 😉
Yeah Dan, I read that and got a big ol’ smile on my face. I’d love him back in 2007, as well. I’ve been begging for a fearless closer since last year. And that guy knows no fear. Who would you rather have in a barroom brawl, Wickman or Reitsma? Like I have to ask, lol. And I’m surprised you haven’t noticed him taking that big mess of chaw out of his mouth after he’s saved the game. It’s totally gross, but yet endearing at the same time.
I forget who pointed it out, but can one of you folks at TBS or Turner South who reads this blog (you know you do) get a mic on what Wickman and B-mac are saying to each other. Sennheiser makes great shotgun microphones. Just play it on the replay, ok?
Great win but it made me somewhat sad thinking about what could have been if Hudson had pitched this well all year and the Braves had had Wickmania from day 1.
I was saying that on the game thread Urlhix.. that I’d actually pay money to hear what Wick and BMac talk about when the game is over.
Wick walks up to him, gets a smile on his face..and starts talking/ yelling all sorts of stuff..
BMac then starts to laugh, as if he was told a very dirty joke involving Jorge Sosa’s mother.
Wick is awesome
Dirty limerick time!
There once was a man and his brother
Who ****ed a dead *****, then another
But he’s cleaner by tons
Than a horse with the runs
Or that tart, Jorge Sosa’s mother.
WIckman is the new Braves folk hero.
I love that end-of-the-game chaw toss, too.
So, since I can’t get excited about the playoffs, I’ll get excited about the kids we’ll get to see in September.
Oh… wait… which ones? 🙁
We’ve already seen KJ; he’ll probably be back. Same situation for Scott Thorman, Brayan Pena, Martin Prado and Tony Pena. They’ve been up; they’ll probably come up in September. I guess Gregor Blanco could get a shot, but the outfield is already clogged with Diaz, Andruw, Francoeur, Langerhans, Thorman and the returning KJ.
And then add whoever’s back from the Disabled List: Davies, Stockman, HoRam, Thomson, Aybar, Jordan? So there’s really nothing to look forward to, except the return of KJ.
PS: Why is Josh Burrus on the 40 man roster? Why Ascanio? Hernandez?
Do the call ups have to be on the 40 man roster?
Yes, Jay, they do.
Burrus is on the 40-man because they would have had to expose him to the Rule 5 draft otherwise. As far as I know, he’s out of the year. KJ definitely is out for the year.
The Irish are filthy people…
I’m 1/4 filth.
All doomed to their fates
walking toward ominous gates
leading to baseball hell
to bottom of Division Braves fell
all thanks to that sorry [EXPLETIVE REDACTED} Tyler Yates!
I wanna see Will Startup and Brandon Jones. I don’t know if they’re ready but I still wanna see them.
“I actually saw Snakes on a Plane last night at Atlantic Station. We walked from Tech all the way there, about a mile, and got lost.”
I am so sorry for you, call me if need someone to talk to.
I know the movie was so bad you might need some time to yourself.
The healing will take time, but you will get through….Motherf$#!@!!
How many guys get to come up?
“I wanna see Will Startup and Brandon Jones. I don’t know if they’re ready but I still wanna see them.”
I wanna see Kyle Davies. Is he coming back this month or what?
He should be.
Jay why is it we can’t find a better SS than Tony Pena in our farms system?
Is eveyrone else worse than him or something? And if so, How can that be?
I can walk through the streets down here and find better shortstops than Pena Jr…
ugh
I walk through the Kindergarten classes of the Mobile County Public Education System and find more pop on a bat that that of Lil’…
Pena is so bad there has to be someone better than him. Has to be.
Can Walt Weiss come out of retirement. His worst year he hit .200, which is 3-4 times better than that of Tony Pena’s Sr.’s lil’ baby boy.
like i said…Barbaro’s leg had more pop…

An excessively *Fat* Closer who chews Tobacco while pitching?
The more and more I see, the more and more I love….
WICKMANIA!!!!
Martin Prado should have been called up over Tony Jr. He was hitting better than him.
Jeez, Carlos Zambrano sure is emotional….He tried to break the bat over his knee…Didn’t quite work but it sure was entertaining.
Pop Crackle Tap Whiff
Barbaro, Kindergartener, Pena, Francouer
Zambrano has tried to do that several times I think.
Tanaka had it right, he didn’t try to do it on the knee, he did it on the head while making a banzai face.
Actually, while the movie was one of the most ridiculous ones ive seen in a very long time, the ridiculousness made it a very entertaining movie to watch.
If Prado came up instead of Pena and hit .200, I repeat once more, would be a 3-4 times improvement of Lil’s output.
Snakes on Tony Pena Jr..
You know what is entertaining…listening to Holyfields pre-fight interview…and seeing him beat a real-estate agent’s ass at 43.
Ok that was the last time I mention him…I promise.
Travolta “You know what they call a snake in France”
Jackson “No, what”
Travolta “A Crown Serpent with Cheese”
Jackson “Get the f*** out of here”
Travolta “No you get the f*** out of here”
Pulp Fiction with Snakes
@44 LOL
If only Samuel L. had the ultimate weapon against a snake, the shovel, he might not have been so alarmed in the previews.
LOL @ 47..
Snakes in Tim McCarver’s head…
Evander is over the hill, the valley, the mountain, and the continent.
He fought against who exactly?
Nationwide is on your side
Jereamy Bates…At the time it was the only sport that was on and I had to watch something to keep me entertained.
Snakes in Tim McCarver’s head would be an improvement, other than say the current residents, his thoughts!
Bates??? I saw so of the highlights of the fight but I did not remember the guy’s name?
Do you know what his record was?
I think 21-11-8 or something like that.
Oh, it is now 21-12-2.
21-12-2, sounds like a chump.
So Holyfield/Bates was like Flair/Nameless Jobber?
Yeah he was…But I like boxing/UFC so if there is a fight on..I’m going to watch it.
I be back in a little bit..
I wish somone would knock Johnny Damon out…
