I believe that these will be the 67th, 68th, and 69th times we’ve seen the Marlins this year.
At the risk of annoying people (it’s my site and I’ll annoy who I want to) I’m still looking for college football previews. The one SEC big dog that hasn’t been covered is LSU. I’d like previews of USC (both of them) and Clemson, Texas, and Arkansas. And I suppose Stu can preview (*snicker*) Vanderbilt if he’d like. Or anybody else, I suppose.ΓΒ Email me (bravesjournal at gmail dot com) if you’re interested.
I guess I can do Arkansas, if you would like.
Well, if nobody else steps forward, go to it.
I’ll do a hokies preview…even though I am the only hokie fan on here.
I can do a Texas preview but it will be a compact overview
Vanderbilt Preview:
Offense: pomising QBs (Richard Kovalcheck, Chris Nickson, Mac Adams) solid running backs (Cassen Jackson-Garrison, Jeff Jennings, Steven Bright), good/underrated receiving corps (Earl Bennett, Marlon White, George Smith), two good, potentially very good, tight ends (Brad Allen and Jonathan Massey), and a solid O-line (led by LT Brian Stamper).
Defense: one good, potentially great, linebacker (Jonathan Goff), one good safety (Reshard Langford), and everyone else on the unit is terrible.
Special Teams: Atrocious.
Predicted Record: 3-9.
1914 Update won’t branch into pigskin, but does note that guys in ugly orange uniforms had the best record in the Southeast (Tennessee at 9-0). Of course, when your schedule contains the likes of Sewanee, Kings College, Carson-Newman, and Vanderbilt, that record isn’t saying much. The mythical national champion was generally believed to be Army (also 9-0).
Anyway:
NY Giants 59-44 (–)
Boston Braves 56-47 (3 GB)
St. Louis Cardinals 59-52 (4)
Chicago Cubs 56-51 (5)
Brooklyn Robins 48-56 (11.5)
Pittsburgh Pirates 48-56 (11.5)
Philadelphia Phillies 48-57 (12)
Cincinnati Reds 48-59 (13)
Today’s Game:
Boston 000 000 100 – 1 6 2 LP- Crutcher
Cincy 002 100 00x – 3 2 0 WP- Douglas
A two-base, two-run error by backup 3B Red Smith was all it took for the Reds to end the Braves’ winning streak at seven.
Brian, those would have been some of the best football programs in the country back then. Before Desegregation, the best football programs were at the best academic institutions, so at the very least, Sewanee and Vanderbilt were very good back then.
My recollection (it has been a long time since I read about those days) is that before the rise of Alabama under Wallace Wade, Sewanee was the football power in the South.
I’ll take a stab at LSU Mac…
Sewanee was one of the charter members of the SEC, but didn’t win a conference game in 3 or 4 years, and dropped out.
Vandy actually was a power until the 50’s or so. Auburn hasn’t lost to Vandy since ’55 (i think), but still only leads the all time series by a game or two.
Alright… we’re getting there.

They didn’t tak a lot of days off!
That looks like an intramural schedule.
My how times have changed for football at Sewanee. The students won’t even go to the games. It’s quite an embarrassment.
Sewanee’s day was passing by 1914. They were in the proto-Southwest Conference (the Southwest Independent Conference), finishing 5-3, but their days as a power were gone. Among their 1914 opponents- Cumberland U. (yes, the Cumberland that lost 222-0 to GT), UTC, and Florida back when Florida was a state on unpopulated swamps (as opposed to today’s densely populated swamps).
My source for the 1914 schedules, here claims Tennessee as the 30th best team in ths USA in 1914, due to a weak schedule. (Auburn, at 8-0-1, ranks 20th). There weren’t a lot of interregional games back then. What there were (Michigan 23-3 over Vandy, Texas 66-7 over Mississippi, Notre Dame over the Haskell Indians) strongly suggested that Southeastern football was pretty weak.
Whoops. Misspoke: Sewanee’s conference was the proto-SEC. The proto-Southwest Conference was called the Southwestern Athletic Conference (no relation to today’s SWAC).
Like I said, it’s been awhile. (And I have only the vaguest idea about pre-Wallace Wade college football.) I do know that southern football was considered second-class until Alabama won the Rose Bowl after the 1925 season. While it’s hard to tell who was the national champion a lot of the time in those years, the only southern teams I see with championship claims before 1925 are LSU in 1908 and Tech (coached by Heisman) in 1917.
Langerhans didn’t take advantage of Jones’ absence the previous two games, going 1-for-7 with four strikeouts. He’s batting .188 with no homers since the All-Star break, though that has come with 12 walks in 48 at-bats.
If you would like one on Oklahoma I could churn one out in a few days.
No problem.
Anyone have any ideas on why Langerhans has taken such a nosedive this season? He had a semi-decent rookie campaign last season, but he seems to have gone from marginally acceptable offensively to fifth-outfielder at best. What gives?
AAR, he used to be a good contact hitter. I personally think he’s opening up at the plate and trying to lift and pull the ball. Last year it looked like his first move was toward the pitcher and now its toward first base. I think they should get him trying to hit the ball the other way again. Just my thoughts and what I’m seeing.
Mac,
I just finished the Hokie Preview. What do I do next.
Can we get back to the fantasy football talk? I hate coming to a Braves forum and seeing any actual discussion of the Braves.
Today’s lineups.
M.Giles 2B
E.Renteria SS
C.Jones 3B
A.Jones CF
J.Francoeur RF
B.McCann C
M.Diaz LF
A.LaRoche 1B
T.Hudson P
H.Ramirez SS
D.Uggla 2B
M.Cabrera 3B
M.Jacobs 1B
J.Willingham LF
J.Hemida RF
A.Amezaga CF
M.Treanor C
S.Olsen P
Thank God, Andruw’s back. Hell, if you have to, play him in right Bobby, but this lineup is dysfunctional without him in there.
VaTech is up. I did a couple of minor edits for style.
Mr Swings,
Thank goodness for football. If it were all Braves talk, everyone would be discussing methods of suicide.
Me, I’ll try to drink myself to death—it takes longest & you can change your mind.
Oh, ok.
Thanks for letting me do it.
Thanks, Jay10, for the lineup. I hope Andruw can play. I just don’t understand why Francouer would bat fifth.
Mr. Swings@Everything, are you related to Frenchy in any way?
No problem…No one can figure out why he is still batting 5th.
BP’s Transaction Analysis suggested the Braves might have been improved by signing Preston Wilson, whom the Cardinals signed earlier today. Any thoughts?
(Mine are that 269/ 305/ 409 makes Wilson as offensively valuable as Langerhans, but without the ability to play CF, so there’s no reason the Braves should have cared- and no indication that they did.)
For a decent mangager, Cox does some infuriating things. I realize that lineups don’t matter all that much but it does matter insofar as batting higher in the order insures more plate appearances. If we’re punting this season and trying to develop for next, then go ahead and move Frankor on up in the order. Assuming we’re still trying to win this year that bastich needs to be hitting 8th or 9th even. I’m really tired of that guy. It’s even worse because he’s got that Derek Jeter aura about him. It was pretty pathetic at the Brewers game I was at last week as Francouer was the only Braves player that the crowd cheered for unbidden by the jumbotron.
Langerhans’ numbers are off, but he’s not in fact playing that much worse. His OBP is only two points below last season. What’s happened is a combination of two factors:
1. Problems making contact (he’s struck out more this year than all last year in about 60 fewer AB).
2. Bad luck, singles not falling and doubles getting caught up to.
His home runs are just about the same as last season and his walks are up, the main problem is a much lower batting average.Β I’d normally say that (2) is most of that but his PrOPS is only slightly higher than his actual OPS.
Like a lot of the Braves, Langerhans has a ridiculous home/road split. At home, he’s hitting .306/.403/.476. On the road, .182/.287/.292. At home, he’s hitting at about the level of Scott Hatteberg; on the road, he’s worse than the worst regular players in baseball.
Kevin, we have to get Frenchy more AB’s so he can get some more K’s. Also McCanns needs more AB”S so he can get in the batting title hunt and we wouldn’t want that.
I’m not related to Francouer and I hate that nickname. It’s insulting to the French.
Who’s watching the Holyfield fight?
Whats he fighting? Good grammar?
LOL
Holyfield is going to get destroyed. I hope he doesn’t keep this up like Forman did…just let it go
Gameday is showing Orr leading off
He said by 2008 he will have all the belts….HAHAHA
It paid off for Foreman eventually……I still think Mike Moorer took a dive….
Yep, Orr is leading off tonight. That’s strange because Giles has always hit Olsen good this year. I wonder what’s up!
He’s gotta be injured…4-5 with a double against Olsen.
He could just be getting a night off like Renteria did
Bruised hand.
Andruw is still day-to-day.
No Andruw or GIles?
What is this thing Edgar and Orr are doing? I see 3-2 on the screan and I don’t know what it means.
Rent!!!
Who scored….I didn’t realize the game started already.
Okay seriously, I just looked at my fantasy football team from the draft last night. I told you all that I wouldn’t be able to make it, so I was upfront about that, so I knew I was not going to like my team all that much with the auto picks and all, but seriously, PRIEST HOLMES ….. I mean would it be asking too much to take people who are retired out of the game. Thank you very little Yahoo
What!!! He was safe!!!!
WOW! Bob missed that one
Orr walked, Rent doubled to deep left according to Game Cast. It says Andruw is batting?
How do you miss that call on Andruw, that’s not even close.
Thanks CSG.
That ump can go to hell he was safe by a full stride….
Andruw beat that one, though he wasn’t running hard. How do you miss a call that bad?
I would hate to have McCann batting here!
hmmm, 3 pitches! That could be a new record for Frenchy!
Somebody hook Bob Davidson up with Lasik surgery. How can you be a major league umpire and blow a call that badly? That ball wasn’t even close to the glove when Andruw ran through the base. Horrible.
Orr: 2BB, 21K, iso-OBP=.015
Frenchy: 11BB, 99K, iso-OBP=0.024
Orr is Francoeur without the power. Dump him for a bag of balls. He’s taking a roster spot that could got to someone like Thorman who swings something more than a feather.
Francoeur and Orr do have much different number of plate appearances but iso-OBP is not dependent on the number of PA.
That sucks.
That sucks also.
also sucks*
How many times have we had third stolen on us this year? It seems like quite a few
HUddy is to easy to steal on! Another reason to dump him and his salary
so much for that lead
You can only wish csg. It will be easier to trade HoRam than Huddy.
Nice scoop by Adam
oh, Im wishing!
We could trade Huddy to Bos or NYY.
After watching Jason Johnson and Sidney Ponson pitch, you would think they would be looking for someone.
If the Braves will take two-third of Huddy’s remaining salary, I think that can be done Jay.
Thats why I suggested Bos and NYY…you know teams that don’t mind spending money.
I trying to put together some possible trades w/ boston right now.
Who would like to have Eric Hinskie? His numbers aren’t too bad, plus he can play Corner outfields, 1st and 3rd.
http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/team/player.jsp?player_id=400134
ROACHY!!!
Wow, I think we have our everyday first baseman.
wow, I like the Adam I am seeing now. I have been waiting for more than a year!!!
Did he say 21 of Roach’s 25 homers are on the road?
Yeah, Smitty. I think we can stop all the talks about Salty to first base.
Jeez….the Red Sox have no good prospects in the minors.
Adam Stern is only hitting .258
CHIPPER!!!
Chipper with a tripple
Chipper!!!
Jay, that’s correct. Adam has an OPS of over 1.000 on the road and over 1.100 after the all-star break. Having him betting eighth shows how good this offense is. The problem is pitching, which is something a lot of us here have complained since last winter. Spending about $10M on Thomson, Sosa, and Reitsma are just awful.
Jeff, you are just awful.
I have yet to complain about francouer, however, that last at bat was one of his worst of the year, easily in the top 10. I don’t agree with some that say he should be sent to the minors, but something must be done, he should be dropped in the lineup, even if it does affect his confidence. If the braves’ stress make-up like they claim, then frenchy should be able to handle a so called “setback” and still live up to his potential.
Does TP go over film with him? It seems the coaching staff may stress aggresiveness too much with jeffrey.
Thanks for reminding us….
I finished the Arkansas preview
Harum Scarum is on I
It’s not often this season that I get home, turn on the tv and find us leading….
Another good at bat by Adam
Davey,
Your trading Travis Taylor for Samkon Gado?
WHY?
I know it makes absolutely no sense. Vikings lost Kelly Campbell, Nate Burleson and Koren Robinson will be joining Prison Break…so, Taylor will get action..
Gado on the other hand will ride the bench will Ahman Green and Najeh Davenport return….
So yeah, I’m doing something incredibly dumb…
*while…
So are you going to do it or will you cancel it.
Go Nats!
I dunno Jay..
The thing is, Travis Taylor, since leaving Flordia, has done nothing to impress me.
And Gado could get some playing time, cuz Ahman Green isn’t what he used to be anymore.
So..I dunno. It doesn’t really matter since I’m to get destroyed every week anyways…
Wow, Renteria was out by 89 feet
Go Pirates!
Andruw Jones is the best center fielder ever
Yep
I don’t care if his back and knees are hurt, the Braves have got to keep Andruw beyond next year. I have waited for this Andruw for so long, and I would hate to see him leaving after next season.
Me too.
How long are we going to have to put up with Jeff Francouer? Think about how long Bobby stuck with Jordan. The guy had to injure himself misfielding a ball to be taken out. We watched Mondesi get approx. 200 AB with fork sticking in his back.
Dan Kolb, Chris Reitsma? I am really dreading the next few years of Braves fandom.
I really like this Marlins team. Dan Uggla can play for me any day
You act like he is the worst player we have…this is his first full season..give him a damn break.
The Marlins are going to be dangerous next year. They executed their “dump” strategy much better than after 1997, getting some terrific prospects. The Braves can be dangerous if we remember to leave Francoeur behind on some road trip this year.
Frenchy will be fine. As long as the Braves do not rely on him to be the main runs producers, the offense will be fine.
The Marlins aren’t going to end the decade in South Florida, though. Skip and Chip are right in that Pro Player’s a lousy facility, Huizenga and Loria have poisoned the well toward getting a new stadium, and Florida has higher priorities than shelling out hundreds of millions for a new place.
Good play Renty.
It’s not the fact that he sucks. Its the way in which he sucks.
It’s Elvis weekend on I
Nice DP!!!
BTW, what’s wrong with Marcus again?!
Anyone seen “Snakes on a Plane” yet?
I have no desire whatsoever to see that movie…
He looked safe from East Tennessee
We need to get some motherf#cking snakes on the motherf*cking Mets charter!
I like our chances of catching the North Fork Tides!
Adam!!!
Snakes on Pete Orr…
Run Adam Run!!!
Sorry Norfolk
PETE ORR!!…
so much for me making fun of him
Wow, Pete Orr is having a great game!
Pete Orr’s got mad game…
Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn in a three legged dogs butt sometimes, or however that saying goes.
Orr had a good game the other night too
Little League WS is on ESPN. I know you all thought it was going to be Yankees-Red Sox
I remember when a couple of years ago the team from Curacao became World Champs…
I had a little cousin on that team. Pretty cool.
It looks like it is time for Hudson to have one of his spells
And Hudson is breaking down…
Let’s not have this be “the bad inning.”
Snakes on Tim Hudson
So two good games from Orr–he still has no business being on the roster.
What was Diaz trying to do?
Get on tv.
Hudson slithers away from trouble.
Looks like Glenn Diamond will be crying himself to sleep…They basically just called him an ugly Mofo.LOL
But they always do..
One day Glenn will show up with an Ak-47 and Chip Caray won’t be laughing then
If we’d only had this Hudson all year.
Man, I hope Glenn has a good sense of humor.
“It’s a big Atlanta lead..”
Not with this bullpen
Oh, Marte homered for the first time.
I like LaRoche more and more every passing day…
Damon is murdering the Red Sox today. Homers in both games.
He’s 6 for 9, 2 HRs and 7 RBIs so far.
In case anyone was wondering, since the break:
LaRoche .323 .393 .740
Francoeur .244 .278 .441
Just for informational purposes.
Not counting today, or it’s even more.
Hey All…so, have the Braves officially declared their intentions to win the WC yet? Ha! But, hey, we will take a win π
LaRoche could end up around .280 30HR 100+RBI
Not bad, not bad at all…
Since I just got home, it’s safe to say we got the GOOD Hudson tonight. About friggin time.
Matt’s not in there because of his glove…that’s for sure
Wow, Diaz over ran a ball that hit off the wall
Diaz isn’t the worst LF I’ve ever seen. That title goes to Lonnie Smith. But he’s on the list.
So this is what an Ace looks like…
Who is worse with the glove, Diaz or Kelly Johnson?
I think that security guard just had a heart attack.
I think Jerry Lane is dead
Damn, he is bloody!!!!!
Lonnie Smith…
I had a “Lonnie Smith” baseball bat years ago
Good times.
Snakes on Jerry Lane!
Smitty, I think KJ may well be the starting second baseman for the Braves next season.
Oh, I thought I saw blood.
You can have your stats and all that fancy internet nonsense. LaRoche be skrikin’ out too much!! And he got thrown out on that play in the playoffs!!
Looks like he tried to fight Brett Myers…
I think there are too many broken bats now a days
100 RBI will be difficult hitting behind Kid Popup, but he should get 30 HR easy.
I think they’re hurting him more now…
Gonzo waived him home in that playoff game
He is really hurt…I didn’t think I would see somebody go down till the holyfield fight.
I hesitate to point this out under the circumstances, but note the “EG” patch on his sleeve.
Lane’s still conscious, which is good. Does MLB have reserve umpires who can take Lane’s place for tomorrow, if necessary?
Eric Gregg would have died if he got hit like that
Don’t they have spares at every game?
They can call someone up from AAA….very much the same as a team calls up a ballplayer.
They will call up a minor league umpire
No, they will continue the game with three umps.
They will work the game on umpire short. Someone will move behind the plate
That’s awful. I hope he’s all right. I think the neck brace was hurting him more than helping him. Maybe a broken jaw or something.
Those bats are really dangerous. They should do something about that.
BUT HOW MANY OF THOSE RBIZ WILL BE W/ 2 OUT?!?!?! OFMG? Answer me that one.
I dont think Lane’s gerth will help in terms of recovery. I think in general these umpires, in this heat, need to be in better shape.
I wonder if LanceinFL was on the scene…
Until I saw the entire replay, I was afraid Lane got one of those Steve Yeager broken-bat injuries. He certainly got thumped, but apparently not as bad as Yeager.
I think getting hit in the head with a bat will hurt his recovery more than anything
Jenny,
I dont think there’s a lot you can in terms of making the bats safer, but I agree, those things can really kill you.
Smitty…obviously, that wasn’t my point. My point is in general, in terms of his general health, it takes longer to recover from anything when you are very overweight and out of shape.
aluminum bats….JK
Hey Jenny, I claimed you as for something the other night
I don’t remeber what though
The bats wouldn’t break like they do if the handles weren’t ridiculously thin. They didn’t used to be, and bats didn’t used to break as much as they do.
I say batters get to call their own strikes for the rest of the game. Who’s with me? I bet Frankor still couldn’t walk under those circumstances.
A Redsox fan.
Baez looks very good. JS probably can’t keep both Wickman and Baez for next season, but I will be very happy if he keeps one of them.
Smitty..what did you say during the draft last night that was so funny again?
You were saying that you were going to send Jenny an e-mail…but it came out so hilarious…
I think Francouer is leading the league in broken bats
I was going to shoot her an email. I don’t remember for what though…
Yeah that was funny as hell.
Didn’t you say she must be hanging out with her Red Sox fans.
Yeah.. “Im going to shoot her and mail”…
Hahahaaha
You know Orr isn’t even the worst Canadian on the team…
They are saying Lane broke his jaw…
Who is…Reitsma?
He was holding that jaw..so, could be
If you thought that was funny, wait until you read the Arkansas preview
I don’t see it up there.
Wickman is just standing in the bullpen and being awesome..
WICKMANIA!
If you could go out for beers with one Brave, wouldn’t have to be Wickman?
I ask myself that question everyday Smitty…
It’d be Wickman…LaRoche, Bobby Dews or McCann.
Most probably Wickman though. We’d play some pool, get in a random bar fight.. Good times..
Come on Davey, we all know you would choose Bobby Dews. π
Since there’s been a few SOAP plane comments tonight I want to make sure everyone knows about the audience participation script.
link
Could be fun with the right crowd.
I’d go with Francoeur just to talk some sense into him.
“HEY! HEY! HEY! It’s Snakes on a Plane!”
HAHAHAHA
And yeah, it would be awesome to have a few beers with Wickman at the Clairmont Lounge.
Did you guys hear the big man grunt!!!
urlhix,
You read my mind.
Beers with Wickman at the Clairmont would be a fine evening indeed.
Good play Langy.
Bobby Dews is for lunch Jay π Along with Walt Weis and Keith Lockhart.
Wickman is for beer at a random bar.
Man, I’d pay money to hear what Wickman says to McCann
If the Braves can combine Langy with Diaz, they will have one hack of a leftfielder.
Asian Gangster
__When:__ After the Asian ganster says a line.
__What:__ Shout: ββ¦In bed.β
LOL
Let’s combine Wickman with all the rest of our bullpen.
I thought you might appreciate that, ububba.
Let’s combine Jeff with Langerhan’s walking ability.
Snakes in Dolphins Stadium!
That was funny Urlhix
Claremont Lounge 4 life. That place rules.
I love SOAP song
urlhix,
Had many a memorable evening over there on Ponce de Leon. Every time I’m back in town on business, I take people there & it’s usually something they talk about for years.
I’m not gonna go crazy about it yet, but, y’know, Hudson’s pitching really well lately.
Oh boy,
Holyfield vs Bates
It’s on FSN if anybody cares.
Wow free boxing
haha…No baseball is on…so I have to find some sport to watch.
Evander is still missing part of his ear
Ok,
I officially feel my IQ dropping after listening to that interview.
Ewww that was a nasty bump.
It’s Always Sunny in Philly is on
Is that show funny?
yes
I’m watching it now….Don’t really understand what’s going on..but that’s ok.
I was at the Claremont with my girlfriend on v-day one yr and got the Blondie titty-smack. I bought her a shot and BAM! right upside my head.
Well I will see you guys later….
Davey why did you reject my Corey Bradford for Edgerrin James trade?
And don’t give me that excuse, “Corey Bradford is bad”.
I don’t want to hear that.
