Anyone consider the possibility that he’s holding Kolb back specifically because of that reason?

When I was at the game last night, the crowd booed whenever the Brewers brought out a reliever since it wasn’t Kolb. Hopefully Yost will do us a favor and put him in just for our benefit, it’s the one good thing we can have this year.

Is he really this hated in Atlanta? Like I said last night, I literally have never seen Dan Kolb pitch, so I don’t have those same emotions that people have. It’s kind of unlike Atlanta fans, though, to boo someone incessantly like the stupid New York fans do with A-Rod. Is it just because of Kolb’s pitching or is it because of those stupid things he said about not being concerned about lead-off walks? It doesn’t seem like Atlanta has really booed any other former player…

re previous thread:
It’s fruitless to try and compare Francoeur to anybody. The attempts in the previous thread provide the evidence — he has some of the same skills as Dunn, but they’re polar opposites in terms of plate discipline. He’s got at least twice as much power as Langerhans, so that doesn’t work. Rob Deer is closer, but only because Deer was a .220 hitter — he still got on base far more often than Frenchy; again, plate discipline. The best recent comp as a hitter may be Tony Batista, but one is a fat third baseman and the other is a rangy RF, so that doesn’t really satisfy either.
So really, I agree with ububba — Francoeur is just weird. Cartoonishly weird, in fact — I think you have to delve into the world of fiction to find his truest comp. It’s gotta be Pedro Serrano, doesn’t it?

So we trade Wilson Betemit, who is tearing it up with the Dodgers, for Willy Aybar, who is now DLed for at least a month, and Danys Baez, who hasn’t really shown any ability to pitch better than any of the previous scrubs. Leaving us with Pete Orr as our only backup infielder and a bullpen that really isn’t any better than it was before Baez came. Good trade!

Pondering the past, I tried to find a hitter in 1914 who was even vaguely comparable to Frenchy- above-average power and a pathological walk aversion. The Braves had 4OF Ted Cather, who drew 7 walks in 145 AB and hit 297/ 338/ 400, but that’s MUCH better than Frenchy in context. Maybe the closest I could find was the St. Louis Browns’ 1B John Leary (23 yo, 265/ 282/ 343, 10 BB in 544 AB). Leary washed out of the league after hitting 242/ 268/ 286 in 1915.
Anyway, 1914 Update:
NY Giants 58-41 (–)
Boston Braves 52-46 (5.5 GB)
Chicago Cubs 54-49 (6.5)
St. Louis Cardinals 55-52 (7)
Philadelphia Phillies 47-53 (11.5)
Cincinnati Reds 47-54 (12)
Brooklyn Robins 45-53 (12.5)
Pittsburgh Pirates 45-55 (13.5)
Some of Rudolph’s “friends” from the Bronx ran onto the field before the game to cheer Rudolph in the hopes that their celebration would jinx him. Didn’t work. The Braves are alone in second for the first time.

I think it’s way too early to evaluate the Betemit trade. By all indications, Aybar will be better than Betemit (he’s two years younger right now anyway) and Baez is still a capable arm, even with the bad game last night. Aybar still has three years before he’s not considered a prospect anymore, so a two week blimp isn’t exactly the best way to evaluate it. Plus, Baez is pretty good himself.

Well, I’m off to the game. Here’s a little secret for Decatur area fans: DeKalb Avenue is a breeze all the way downtown, and there are always free and available parking spots around the Capitol on the weekend. Langerhans is hitting much better against RHP than Frenchie. Why not Langerhans for Frenchie in RF? IS Frenchie just a sacred cow in this organization, untouchable and unpunishable, no matter what he does wrong the night before, as long as it isn’t not hustling? And maybe the more important question, if they don’t think playing time will motivate Frenchie to work on better plate discipline, what do they think will work? What are they doing to correct this flaw in his game?

yea, i was hoping Huddie would be better. He can’t lose weak-hitting guys to a walk after getting them down 0-2. i sometimes wonder if he has lost or just won’t throw his splitter, which used to be his strike-out pitch.
Just went through the previous thread and I can’t believe I agree with Rob Cope 2 days straight…I also think it’s way to early to evaluate the Betemit/Aybar deal and I also think Aybar has a bigger upside and could be a leadoff, Furcal type player for us at 2nd if we can move (hopefully) Giles this offseason for some desperately needed pitching.
Notice how McCann took the first pitch after Ohka walked 3 straight, he recognized Ohka wildness and made the croorect decision, even thoguh it was a strike.

Do you think anyone is sitting down with them, looking at film, and working on the problem about pitch selection?
The first 2 pitches McCann saw were strikes, considering Ohka’s sudden wildness he managed to string together 2 straight good pitches to McCann. McCann made the correct decision and took the first one. Then BMAC fouled off the second. He then worked the coutn and got a hit, a Major League at bat, Jeff swigns at a ball in the dirt after Ohka walked 3 straight and went to 2 balls on BMAC.

Chief Nocahoma, how can you possibly say that? I mean that like, “how do you know this?” Willie Aybar is 23. At 23, Wilson Betemit was so bad at AAA that everyone basically forgot about him. It took a decent half season at AAA before anyone starting paying him any mind. Aybar, at 23, is having a decent season at the major league level and is predicted, based on his minor league stats, to have a better OBP but less SLG than Betemit, but basically equaling the same OPS. Add that to the fact that Aybar is more versatile (2B, SS, and 3B, whereas Betemit can only play 3B and SS sparingly), and I think it’s safe to say that Aybar and Betemit will be similar players. Betemit has 13 homers in limited duty, right, but don’t get too nearsighted.

This homestand Jeff was more valuable than Huck, face it. You are the one that is delusional. Who drove in the winning run friday? Who threw out the runner at home and made a run saving catch yesterday?
And what did Huck do? Average defense with his 2-14. Yeah….. now who is being delusional?
Rob Cope
on August 13, 2006 at 4:36 pm
Jeff K’s several times in clutch situations on ugly pitches with ugly swings, air mails a ball (ya know, because he has SUCH an AWESOME arm) that moves a runner up to an extra base and takes the double play away, BUT he hit a mistake and made a decent catch, so it’s okay now. Of course, with the inevitable comparison to “Huckleberry”, Jeff somehow wins out on Landogarner’s Fantasy Island because LaRoche came back from an injury without hitting hangers, but actually took walks and acted like he had a clue. Oh, and he didn’t play “500” during a major league baseball game by pulling a Vlad, instead he just saved a great play by Chipper by digging a ball out of the dirt. My bad. I can see your rationale, homes.
Landogarner
on August 13, 2006 at 4:45 pm
That’s sad Rob. Seriously just sad. Not playing 500? 2 for 14 is pathetic.
And this crap about him coming back from an injury is supposed to be some excuse for going 2 and 14? He was out two days with a SORE FOREARM give me a break. You are going to compare one decent play and a 2 for 14 performance to a run scoring catch, throwing out a runner at home, a game winning hit, a homerun, a base hit, and a couple other hits, to what Huck did? You guys are seriously just not willing to give Frenchy credit for anything are you?
And then you guys have the nerve to say I am delusional and on a “fantasy island”? Mind boggling.

Huckleberry 2-14 this homestand and 0 for 4 today, yet nobody complains about him. And he just left Frenchy on base.
If the Braves keep leading, there is only one chance left for a Kolb sighting.

What Huddy does now means diddley squat.
Lando, your arguments are really weak. You’re alone on this. Stop now.

Couldn’t be because Francoeur came up at a critical time last night and swung at three balls, two completely unhittable.
LaRoche didn’t get a hit against a specialist with a three run lead late and unless it was a home run or a gap shot, it wouldn’t score Francoeur.
If the Braves hold on here, Paronto will get the win for throwing one pitch. It would be his first decision of the season and his first win since 2001.

LaRoche was facing a lefty submariner by the way, and actually took a ball.
If the Turner Field crew had a sense of humor, they would have played “Enter Sandman” for Kolbie’s entrance into the game.
Ah, same old Danny!
Ah, same old Tony!
who’s with me on them making a Red Stripe commercial where the Jamaican guy with the sash, says, “Boo! Danny Kolbb, creey, fat reliever!”
@102 Yes they have…
Kolb is being Kolb 3-0 hit.
lol Ok 4seam. 2-14 is ok while winning games and having one bad at bat isn’t. Got ya.
Yikes. A pop out.
dammit Marcus…we have to beat fat boy up. C’mon Edgar!!!!
Where’s the WICKMANIA BANNER?????
KOLB, BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s Cave Dan!
Do you think Kolb has been pounding beers in the bullpen today?
Scoreless inning for Kolb….
Ask and ye shall receive.
Danny Kolb will be played by Homer Simpson in an animated movie.
Oof, done in by one of those patented Dan Kolb double plays. He’s a groundball pitcher, you know.
Crap.
Homer? I am thinking more of Barney
Barney would be Wickmania.
We need a Wickmania cheer!
The theme song sould be from “Dance Mania” from “The Cosby Show.”
Kolb shut the Braves down twice this year. It’s not fair.
Pretty good day for the Aubies even if Hudson didn’t get a win.
Wickman probably spends his days in a dirty shirt, driking beer and watching The Man Show…
TBS needs to stop acting like Braves’ fans should be happy that Braves’ games will no longer be aired nationally on TBS.
Wickmania!
Wickam must’ve told BMac a very dirty joke…
Did you see the smile on Brian’s face as Wick was talking??
Damn I can’t type today…
Wickman*

Landogarner you nutter, Francouer has had more than “one abd at bat”, try at least 3 in clutch positions. Today against Ohka, and Cordero last night, he struck out on 3 straight balls each time against pitchers who were having really bad control problems and had walked 2(Ohka) and 3(Cordero) straight.
LaRoche was coming up in the Ohka siuation a left-hander with patience.
BRAVES WIN!!!!
Oh yea, Lando, stop giving Tennessee Brvae your moonshine.
Yeah, and what has Huck done this homestand 4SEAM? NOOOTHIIINGGGGGGGGG accept go 2-14. And I am the nutter?
Can we trade Yates to St. Louis now?
Langarner has a simple tactic, ignore everything everyone says and keep going on with delusions.
What did Jeff do during the road trip?
Thats right. Now crawl back up into your attic and go to sleep.
LaRoche is the better player, far better, gets walks, works the count, is patient, and has better numbers.
Great defender to boot.
LaRoche player excellent defense in the homestand, and Jeff was kind of mediocre except for one good play, today when he threw to thrid when he should have kept the runner at second.
