Marlins off to impressive start | Braves Notebook | ajc.com
The stupid AJC not only is requiring registration now (even for free articles) it’s got one of the more intrusive registration processes. My suggestion is that you use the following information to log in:
Name warliberal;
Address mac at warliberal dot com;
Password warliberal.
Email written out so that the spam spiders don’t grab it… That’s free articles only. I resent the registration process, but I’m not a thief. At least, not a thief of something worthless.
Anyway, Armando Almanza is being checked out by the Braves doctors. Oddly, John Scheurholz isn’t being checked out by the Braves’ psychologists for signing him.
I gotta take a moment to give props to Andruw. We need him to take his offensive game up a notch this year I would think, to try to keep the streak alive, and I have been impressed so far with a certain part of his game that tended to be lacking in the past: patience.
This is not based on stats, but really a couple key at-bats recently that were pretty amazing, for he-who-strikes-out-alot. First was last Saturday’s, which I attended. Right before Julio Franco’s lauded 12-pitch at-bat, Andruw actually drew a walk as well to tie the score.
Secondly was last night, the Braves almost had the same kind of rally i think it was in the 5th. Andruw was down something like 0-2 or 1-2 and actually worked it back to a walk. This at-bat (after which Julio gidp to kill the rally) actually reminded me of Julio’s on Saturday. It was textbook: anything in the zone he fouled off (11 or 12 pitches total) and anything off the plate he took. The last 2 balls were also both very close.
Basically, I was just impressed with Andruw’s control and focus. Far too many times have I seen him swing and miss at ball four or otherwise beat himself, but here he showed pinpoint perception against a pitcher who was throwing really well. Too early to say this is a trend, but I am keeping my hopes up.
By the time I discovered the AJC login process, some kind soul had already created a Selig account:
First name: Bud
email: bselig@mlb.com
password: bselig
And the best part is that the Terence Moore articles are still subscription only, so we’re all spared this week’s diatribe on the Braves’ lack of African American players.
Andrew’s patience has actually been improving steadily over the past few years. Sure, it’s come and gone at times, but over the long run it’s been improving.
On another note, I’m not the least bit surprised to see someone so full of negativity and cynicism to have a site called warliberal 😛
Grst, I’m not surprised at all to find someone who can’t spell Andruw’s name correctly to also be someone who apparently drank their fill of Haterade.
Now if we could just get Andruw to cut down on those inning ending/game ending double-plays I’d feel much better.
Oh look, it’s 2-0 Marlins in the first inning. That may be all they need.
Ed, how is there a correlation between someone who can’t spell Andruw’s name right and their views on war? For the longest time, I thought Andruw spelled his name like everybody else in the world, with an “e”. So forgive us if we fail to jot down the unusualness of Braves players’ spellings of their name. If I were to write Chris Ritesma or Kevin Griboski, should I fear the same chastisement?
By the way, what is in this Haterade? Will it replenish my electrolytes that I lose during an intense work out, and does it taste as good as the Fruit Punch that Powerade puts out? I’m dying to know…
Just want to join in the hating of the AJC’s new registration process. Not only that, but they go Patriot Act on us and want to know everything from my blood type to my annual income. All this for a newspaper they should pay me to read.
I think the point Ed was making, ROB COPE, is that Grst is out of line making fun of Mac Thomason on his own damn website. Quite frankly Mac’s views and your views on politics or anything other than Braves baseball are of no interest to me when I read this site. Grst is a jerk for making fun of Mac, a loyal Braves fan like many of us, and a great writer who shares his writing talent and thoughts on the Braves with us FOR FREE. Leave Mac’s politics out of this, leave your politics out of this, and let’s just talk about Braves baseball, okay? Robert’s racism and y’alls political comments have their own forums on the Internet, I’m sure. Use those, buddy. Let’s just talk about the Braves here!
In an unrelated topic, how bout the Braves taking one from the red-hot Marlins.
I thought that cute little ” 😛 ” emoticon Grst used after his comment meant he was just kidding.
And go Braves! My fears were allayed. I thought after that 2-0 hole was dug that we were done for.
And Marcus Giles is now the hottest hitter in the league. Take that, Miguel Cabrera!
Almanza should be a decent middle man. Your cynicism gets the best of you on this one.
Larry had it exactly right.
This is Mac’s site, and making fun (even if you use an emoticon (OMGLOLOL!!!1)) of his chosen nickname is just rude.
And yes, I should have just let it slide, because it’s not my place to be the pointer-outer of rudeness. But I like Mac, even though we have never met. And friends have one another’s backs.
And… (to get back on topic)
GREAT win! I didn’t get to see it, but I am so pleased that the Braves beat the Marlins. Yeah, this may sound odd coming from a guy who lives 12 miles away from the Marlins’ stadium, and whose second-favorite team *is* the Marlins… but I’ve loved the Braves since I was old enough to care about baseball. I still remember cringing every time I read “Tank McNamara” in the funnies. (It didn’t help that I’ve also been a Buccaneers fan since the team joined the league.) So I’ve seen good times and bad times. Good is way more fun. And this year “feels” bad, but I’m hoping to be wrong. Heck, I was last year, so why not this year, too?
But – 2 errors by Giles?! Leading to 3 unearned runs? Someone break this down for me. Tell me he hasn’t gotten Furcalitis.

Remember when this would have meant two days on the bench for Giles?

Yup. Back when we had a bench.
Thanks, AOL!!!1!

I would love to hear how my comments could be taken as racist. Saying that baseball suffers because a significant protion of the population has abandoned the sport is racist? I think it’s far more likely that you lack basic reading comprehension skills.
Robert, I’ll make one attempt to explain it to you, although I’d prefer to talk about how nice Vinny would look at 3rd.
I am 49 years old. My father was 51 when I was born so I grew up in a home that knew and understood segregation, Jim Crowe laws and the evils of race mixing. The time for all of those things have passed, thank GOD. Jimmy the Greek was the first puplic figure to be disgraced with comments such as yours, and that was probably 30 years ago. If, by some strange happenstance, you have not learned that such comments as yours are considered to be racist,it shows you to be somewhat obtuse. To not see them as insensitive shows you to be ignorant. You may harbor whatever personal predjudices you want, this is still somewhat a free country. You can fully expect to be called out when you express opinions straight out of the 1950’s.
