No recap from last night’s game, because there was no game last night. They played it at 4:00 and I got confused. Plus I was sick. But we seem to have won 7-0 over the Marlins. Outlets like ESPN, who pay people to pay attention to what time games start, apparently know what happened.

The big news was that Chris Sale’s great play against the Mets in which he stretched out to rob Juan Soto of a hit in the 9th inning of Wednesday’s game also robbed Sale of the structural integrity of his ribcage. He’s on the IL until it recovers. This does not sound like the worst rib fracture ever: Sale stayed in the game after that and threw 8 more pitches. Further, he carried on his business the next two days just thinking his ribs were sore. Mike Hampton he is not, although if Mac had ever written anything called Red Sox Journal Chris Sale would have been its Mike Hampton.

.So the rotation is now the Spencers, Sherlocks, the knife-edge that is Bryce Elder and either Didier Fuentes or Johnny Wholestaff. Amusingly, the current MLB probables page this morning is blank beyond Elder’s start today. I’ll be at the game tomorrow. I hope they don’t ask me to start.

Anyway, Bryce Elder against Sandy Alcantara today. Alcantara has not yet recovered from his Tommy John surgery, although he did pass Josh Johnson for second-most strikeouts in a Marlins uniform. (The leader astonished me.) He should take at least one more day to recover if we’re lucky.

The game is at 1:40 for people who have trouble remembering when games are scheduled. I will do a recap in penance.
