Sunday Game Thread
Hey all. Sorry for not getting to the recap and putting up a late game thread. I’m in the car for 9 hours today. Heres the lineup:
Duvall is still not hitting lefties. Three straight Ks in the second for the Braves. There has to be some offense somewhere…
Arcia is suddenly not so lockdown on defense.
Schwellenbach is looking more and more like a major league pitcher.
The offense gets more and more frustrating, but the pitching has been terrific.
With Spencer getting to the third time through the order I hope Snit has someone ready to get up quickly to loosen up. The third time through can be quite problematic.
Hitting the #9 hitter isn’t a good start.
And there we go…sometimes I hate being right
You did nail that one, sadly.
all with two outs, of course. Game over.
I should have known not to praise Schwellenbach.
How can ANY MLB team be this bad on offense??? All I see are Ks and DPs. The Braves have scored more than one run in an inning once in the last 33 innings at least.
The four runs don’t matter as much when you only muster one run. I get Snit’s outlook that the offense hasn’t hit its stride yet, but when the 6-9 spots are essentially automatic outs right now (Murphy is starting to hit though) it’s not completely going to turn around. It’s going to be hard when we are starting Laureano, Williams, Duvall, Arcia, Anderson, etc. due to injuries. The eventual return of Harris will certainly help, but we still need another outfielder at least.
I forgot about pinch hitter extraordinaire Zack Short.
Schwellenbach has pitched decently for a rookie fifth starter and there’s real upside (lots to like on Statcast) as he gets more MLB reps. It’s difficult for a contending team to let a young pitcher develop while trying to close a seven game deficit but they almost have to given the starting pitching production they’ll need to replace next year. If Ian Anderson is healthy /Chip Caray voice/ getting him back will be just like making a big trade at the deadline.
This team really, really needs another outfield bat, preferably one who can get on base consistently, so it will be interesting to see what sort of price the Braves are willing to pay. The Athletic had a proposal of Cade Kuehler and Luis Guanipa for Taylor Ward (and another pitcher who is now injured). I would probably make that deal but that’s a lot to give up. I also imagine the real price will be higher than just those two but Ward also helps your roster next year if Ozuna walks, which is my expectation. If AA gives a big contract to a 33-year-old Ozuna after not giving one to Freddie I will pull every hair out of my head.
My personal prediction: Waldrep gets moved for a big piece. I think the reliever risk is too high so move him while teams think he can still be a starter. A 2025 rotation of Strider, Sale, Anderson, AJSS and Schwellenbach is decent enough.
