As Braves fans, we have to understand this simple fact: Nothing Alex Anthopoulos does is without purpose. About a month back, the Atlanta Braves GM claimed both Penn Murfee and Angel Perdomo off waivers and stashed them on the 40-man roster. Fast forward a week or so and both Murfee and Perdomo were removed from the 40-man roster and elected to become free agents. However, during that window, my assumption is that AA informed both that they were not going to make the 40-man but the org was still interested in keeping them around, just not on the 40-man quite yet. While Perdomo isn’t on board yet, Murfee jumped on board, as well as another well-liked pitcher.

Both Jackson Stephens and Penn Murfee will be placed on the 40-man roster right away and if you’re unaware of the term “split contract”, here’s a good breakdown.

Split Contract

A split contract calls for a player to earn different salaries in the Majors Leagues and Minor Leagues. On player on a split contract would earn the pro-rated portion of his Major League salary for any time spent on the Major League roster. That is determined by dividing his Major League salary by 183 (the number of days in the MLB regular season) and multiplying that number by the number of days spent on the Major League roster.

With these 2 additions, the Braves 40-man roster sits at 33 with very little dead weight being carried.
