Atlanta will pull a double this afternoon. After a rain out on Tuesday night, the Braves will try to fend off the Tigers and avoid a series loss or sweep on Wednesday in the Motor City. Here are the lineups for game one.
Spencer Strider gets the ball in hopes for a big bounce back. He had arguably the worst start of his career last week against the Mets and will look for better results against one of the AL’s worst. Kevin Pillar gets an opportunity against a right hander in Reese Olson and Eddie Rosario will serve as the designated hitter. Sean Murphy gets the day off as Travis d’Arnaud occupies the catcher position and clean up spot.
Georgia native Reese Olson gets the nod for Detroit in game one. He’s made two appearances in 2023 and owns a 2.70 ERA through 10 IP. We will get out first look at Miguel Cabrera this season and Eric Haase will also make an appearance for game one. Zach Short absent but unfortunately Andy Ibanez remains in the line up. He can’t have two 3-hit games in a row, right?
Let’s play two! Winning two would also be alright by me. Losing this series would really sting after Monday nights meltdown and a sweep would be pretty unbearable. Strider surely has a fire under him this week and should put us in a position to take the first contest. Because of the rain delay and subsequent push, Dylan Dodd was appointed as the 27th man for the double header and will start game two. The first game starts at 1:10 ET and can be seen on Bally Sports South.
I have to add to what Ryan said yesterday — it doesn’t really make sense that Pillar is starting against a RHP while Hilliard can’t get any PAs.
This has the makings of yet another underwhelming performance
I’m starting to get concerned about Strider.
I think we can officially table the “Strider for Cy Young” talk. He has become extremely hittable as of late. Not a good sign when the corpse of Miguel Cabrera hits one of the 3 homers you have given up in less than 2 innings. Say what you want but this team is not playing well and the pitching staff is a cluster F nearly from top to bottom.
It certainly does appear that Strider may be broken–or at least way off his game. I’m not watching. Is the problem poor command, lack of movement, lower velocity, or something else?
All 3 home runs were against the fastball. Hopefully he’s just going through a dead arm period.
Edit: The fastball velocity wasn’t bad, though it was down slightly at 96-97 from his 98-99. 2 of the 3 fastballs were center cut, the one Miggy hit was on the inside corner.
I should also add that Strider has been using his changeup a lot more the past month. Long term that is a good thing I think, if that can develop into a trustworthy 3rd pitch. He hasn’t made any bad mistakes with it today.
If he is going to continue to take a little off the fastball, and not locate it any better than he is, that changeup is gonna have to play. I’m personally not a fan of taking anything off the fastball, but nobody in the organization has asked for my opinion – ever – either!
Location, location, location…
Let’s see if he can gut this one out and we can score some more runs. This Tiger team ain’t good.
Good shut down inning by Strider.
Rosario took a walk? Stop the presses!
Ozzie too!
Arcia!
Tigers defense helping us too.
Really great AB from Pillar there… tie ballgame.
EDIT: Money Mike in Motown… keep it up, fellas.
We will take all the help we can get…now pour it on!
Harris!
The 2nd time through the order wasn’t kind to Reese Olson.
Get ’em, boys. Need to squeeze a couple more innings out of Strider. Detroit does not have the pitching to get through 2 games.
Strider fell in love with his changeup too much there. Leadoff single.
Wow, tough break for Chavez there… Doesn’t look at all good…
What happened to Chavez?
Got hit in the leg by a Miggy liner… had to be carried off the field.

ugh…damn.
Money Mike seems to be back in the mix though. What a couple of days for him!
Oh, dear. It’s astonishing how important he’s been to the team. But AA has shown an ability to retool the pen on the fly. I remain optimistic that our relief corps will eventually get sorted out.
Money Mike doesn’t do anything halfway, does he? When he slumps, he slumps all the way. When he gets back off the schneid, he’s a holy terror. Money, Money, Money Mike, rocking everywhere!
It’s more like Motown Mike right now… he’s essentially taken over this game.
FWIW, I’m certainly no doctor, but I would be very surprised if we got any good news on Chavez. His leg was planted & stationary when that 96-mph ball hit his shin.
Tough to see that, and he’s been so good this year.
On the bright side, we got the win and Iglesias will be unavailable for the second game so there’s that.
We need a complete game from Dodd given our bullpen woes. Of course the chances of that happening are almost as high as Olson hitting 2 triples and stealing 2 bases during the game.
I almost forgot that we have Culberson available. He may be our best bullpen option for game 2.
True, td, true…
Nothing 10 runs won’t cure.
Might need to score 10 runs again…
I like the chemistry between Ben Ingram and Peter Moylan on these TV broadcasts. Too bad this isn’t much more than an emergency fill-in situation. I do like Gaudin and Francoeur, but Gaudin and Moylan has struck me as a bit forced when they’re together.
Wow.
Ronnie is in full-on beast mode!
Looks like we’re really gonna need those 10 runs…
No way what detritus is left of the bullpen in Game 2 of a doubleheader can hold a 1-run lead.
I thought the same, but what do you know, the bullpen came through this time. Best outing for McHugh this season.
McHugh was McHuge.
5 perfect innings from the pen. Yeah didn’t see that coming. True to form, McHugh has a good outing when I’m not watching.
