Jamey Carroll evidently nearing a multi-year deal with a team and we have expressed interest. I hope it’s not us.
Are you kidding? A 38-year-old utility man who hasn’t hit a home run since 2009 is exactly what this team needs!
There’s a report on SI about Pujols heading down to talk with the Marlins. Maybe the recent trade and payroll rumors have something to do with getting in on that action?
@spike from previous thread
I was involved in pretty much the exact same situation a couple years ago. It’s a terrible feeling and something your brain and heart just don’t want to believe. Maybe that’s why I’m more empathetic toward Paterno than some others.
If Jamey Carroll is replacing Jack Wilson for a Braves/Infante type deal then Im okay with it. He’ll hit for avg with a strong OBP and can cover 2B/3B/SS.
If the Braves were in on Pujols wouldn’t they be shopping Freeman? And wouldn’t that have leaked?
@Smitty, from the previous thread—Wherever Jelks picks — and I think your gut is correct — I don’t see him switching.
It is so, so strange to be recruiting at a higher level in football than in basketball.
I am withholding any judgement at the moment, as no evidence has been produced yet. In any event, this is not the time you turn away from someone, if you ever expect someone to stand up for you.
Please don’t be getting me excited about Pujols, I beg you.
I suppose you’re right, Mac. Although they could hang onto Freeman and teach him to play 3B. It would be a good idea to have a cheap one ready for when your expensive one retires and Pujols is taking up a large portion of salary.
I’m just trying to rationalize a way to get Pujols in a Braves uniform.
Left field.
Whats this Pujols talk?
Heyman has reported that ST Louis has offered 9/$200. Sorry boys, we arent in on that. No chance.
edit: Unless Mark Cuban quietly purchased the Braves last night
Freeman to 3rd. He has the arm for it.
Here’s the Pujols-Miami rumor:
http://m.si.com/news/mlb_sports/tr_mlb_sports/detail/4461779
No connection with the Braves, I was just attempting to connect some dots in a way that spells Pujols.
Oops, posted the mobile link. No idea if it’ll work on a regular browser.
Is this possible?
LSU 11-1, loss to Ark, best win Bama
Bama 11-1, loss to LSU, best win Arkansas
Ark 11-1, loss to Bama, best win LSU
Oregon 11-1, loss to LSU, best win Stanford
Stanford 11-1, loss to Oregon, best win USC
Oklahoma 11-1, loss to TT, best win OSU
OSU 11-1, loss to Oklahoma, best win Texas A&M
Penn St 11-1, loss to Bama, best win Wisconsin
Boise 12-0, best win over UGA
DOB is talking (or tweeting) a lot like Carroll to the Braves is a real possibility.
I dont mind the Carroll idea. He’s got a decent glove, good avg and OBO, and can be a utility type player. Probably a good bat to have behind Bourn.
He’s very useful. Especially given my personal preference to give Prado another chance as the LF.
I’d say a Carroll signing would be the end of Prado in a Braves uniform. Really don’t think they’re about to run him back out there in left.
At a multi-year deal? No thanks.
A 2 yr deal isnt a huge risk for someone who can handle almost all of the infield positions. He’s better than Jack Wilson.
“Multi” to me usually indicates at least three years. Which takes us to his Age 40 season.
Three years would be a very bad idea.
True, at 3 yrs it becomes an issue. But its all speculation at this point and may not even be tied to the Braves.
Yeah, suddenly there’s a lot of Blue Jays talk. #IcanquitTwitteranytime
Twitter is, like, the best invention of all time.
I tend to think it would be the end of Conrad.
This sounds ridiculous, but I wouldn’t want Pujols unless you got him on, say, a three year deal. This isn’t happening. He is going to get 8 or 9 years and be grossly overpaid for the last couple at least. And while he is still a great hitter, he did struggle for a good part of the year–at least by Pujols standards and he is in his thirties.
@14,
Hard to believe Penn State will run the table under the circumstances.
I agree Stu. He will probably go to Vandy.
I hate Jamey Carroll. I can’t stand to look at the little weasel. He’s more intolerable than Sandusky.
Earlier this year, I was trying to figure out why I’ve always hated Carroll so much. But when I saw him in a Dodgers uniform, it clicked. He reminds me, visually, of Brett Butler.
Brett Butler was a pretty great player. We probably would have won at least two division titles in the last four years if we had Butler playing center field, instead of the abominations we trotted out there.
On the other hand, we would have been subjected to his sanctimoniousness. He’d make the perfect Cardinal, really.
Bow Tie Rosenthal says that the Braves aren’t a finalist for Carroll.
Goddammit, Wren.
/overreact
Outbid for Jamey Carroll! Son of a bitch!
If we’re going to deal Prado, Wilson Betemit would be a pretty good caddy for Chipper. Problem is his glove stinks and he can’t play short.
It sure would be nice if Prado could lose 20lbs and play SS
I like UGA -12. As a general rule, if you think a point spread looks way too long, it probably isn’t. Oddsmakers know what they’re doing.
Awful. Is this really the best the Marlins could do?
http://i1139.photobucket.com/albums/n556/BigZ37/securedownload.jpg
Phillies apparently on the verge of signing Papelbon.
Looks like a slow pitch team sponsered by Mike’s Fish Market.
I like it. You know immediately from what city they’ve come.
I’m gonna go ahead and give Wren the benefit of the doubt on Carroll. Maybe he was throwing up a smokescreen, like he did on Pence.
Does anyone here believe that the Marlins will make a “competitive offer” to Pujols, or that Reyes would take a 3-year deal? I can’t decide if this is normal Loria BS or a genuine push to sign free agents.
Truly terrible; their previous uniforms weren’t any great shakes, but it seems like these were intentionally sabotaged.
4 years 50 MM for Papelbon…after arbitration raises for Hamels and Pence it’ll put them at around 150 MM for 2012 payroll…must be nice
I’d say they’re probably done, but they were at 165 MM last year so maybe not.
4 years, upwards of $50 million for Papelbon. Good job, Phillies.
If the Braves were in on Pujols wouldn’t they be shopping Freeman?
Pujols would be as good a 3B as Chipper.
I think it’s a mistake paying that much for a closer. The Phillies obviously realize their door is rapidly closing and they are going for it. I don’t think it’s a smart way to operate, especially the way the playoffs are. But I’m not going to complain if the Phillies screw themselves.
The Phillies offense stinks. Obviously the way to improve that is to sign a closer for $50 million.
Some keep talking about the Phils screwing themselves yet the keep spending and winning. If they overpay for someone, they’ll just pay someone to replace him.
@50
And note even that good of a closer.
The Marlins unis were okay the way they were. The black, white, silver and teal were fine.
That is too much orange and I am a Tennessee fan.
Real smooth, Terrence, Stacey, and John.
I hate Papelbon and there is I cant wait for the days for a Braves walkoff against him. Stupid money for a closer, IMO.
#33 – So when do we finalize it then?
Maybe the Fish were saving their uniform money to get Reyes or Pujols.
And where, exactly, does Chipper go in this scenario, Sam? He has no intention of retiring.
Pujols to 3rd, Chipper to 1st for a year or two, Freeman to LF. The shocking hit to team defense would be made up for by Pujols’ production with the bat. The pitchers would rebel, I’m sure.
I’m fairly confident that Pujols won’t be on the Braves next season. You know, it’s just my hunch.
I don’t think any pitcher in the world would rebel if they heard that Albert Pujols was coming to their team.
So, Pujols plays 3B and Chipper plays 1B. Want to take a second crack at that one?
EDIT: Wait, why am I talking about this?
The Phillies sure seem to have screwed over Ryan Madson.
I’m pretty sure that if this team somehow got their hands on Pujols, he’d mostly play in left field.
Another team rocking the orange? Boy, oh boy…
BTW, on 11/11/11, a big shout out to the vets today—many thanks.
What frickin’ universe are we living in?
Tweet from Rosenthal: “Marlins have made substantial offer to both Pujols and Reyes”
Reyes
Bonafacio
Pujols
Hanley
Stanton
LoMo
Ouch…
Miami Marlins/Miami Heat
Pujols & Reyes, MLB’s Lebron & Bosh, a package deal
@64 This is what I’m saying. They couldn’t possibly increase their payroll by $60 million, right? Right?
Im kinda like this outdoor UNC/Mich St game.
@67 – Maybe Loria saved and invested all the pennies he’s pinched in the last decade and is about to unleash big-spending hell on the East. Gosh I hope not.
Those uniforms are awesome though. Miami’s a fun, vibrant, frequently gaudy place. Their uniforms should be the same, and those are.
Where does the Pujols-Braves talk here stem from? The Braves aren’t going to shell out twenty-five million annually for a single player.
Every baseball team blog is rosterbating about Pujols. Every team wants to have a shot with him. There’s some poor Pirates fan that thinks they’ll reel him in.
So, if you guys ever feel the need to place yourselves at the mercy of a remorseless uncaring bureaucracy, try to post bail on a holiday weekend. A more practical lecture on what your civil rights actually are, I’d rather not even consider.
Don’t ask, don’t tell, don’t wear Carolina Blue camo.
Me: They couldn’t pay me enough to wear those Marlins uniforms!
Albert: You sure?
When Auburn loses, they really lose.
Greetings from Minneapolis…
Wow, very surprised.
Georgia might not be a free pass for LSU after all.
My sack o’ woe runneth over, along with my ill founded complaints about the line.
Good god, was the first half of the Stanford-Oregon game this bad? Stanford looks particularly pedestrian.
Congrats Stu.
Vandy looked good.
Wilson Ramos…. Safe!!
What are we waiting? Ask the Dodgers what they want for Matt Kemp and just give them whatever they want.
We want no part of Seth Smith, right? Right?
It wouldn’t just be Smith. If we could get Wheeler too, it might be okay
The Most Valuable Part-Time Players of All Time – Beyond the Box Score.
David Ross, one of the best backup catchers of all-time.
Wheeler would be fun to watch develop. He’s Ks a ton, but is a slugging machine. His numbers at AA Tulsa last year:
28 double 6 triples 33HR 21 stolen bases (12 CS) .287/.365/.535
Or they could just give us Cargo.
Well done, Dores. A thorough drubbing. When was the last time Vandy beat UK and UT in the same year?
—————
Bama under Saban has the opportunity to be as dominant as any team in history. But they will waste that opportunity if they don’t change their approach on offense. General Neyland is no longer enough.
—————-
Wow. Florida really is that bad. Five losses and no guarantee there won’t be more.
—————-
Miami played Florida State yesterday and no one cared.
—————-
Thought the Nebraska and Penn State players did as much as they could to make the situation a little less unbearable. Whisper on a scream, doesn’t change a thing.
I guess we should have held on to Graffanino, huh? Best part-time player of all time, apparently. Remarkable.
Sooo….. here’s an interesting tidbit from Gammo:
The winter the Braves traded Javy Vazquez to Yanks they rejected a. Vazquez-Papelbon deal
https://twitter.com/#!/pgammo/status/135340023343104000
Happier with Vizcaino or would Paps have made the difference in ’10/11?
@90
Papelbon made 9 million in 2010. There would have been no Billy Wagner (but there would have been no Melky, so, who knows). Also, he would have made 12 million in 2011. No way the Braves could have afforded that.
Well, if we’re being intellectually honest, with our payroll structure (keeping in mind he made 9.3m in 2010, and 12m in 2011) we wouldn’t have added him to our mix.. he just would have precluded our signing of Wagner for 2010… and Wagner drastically outperformed him (and was paid 6.75m.)
Then, after 2010 when he posted the 3.90 ERA with a K/BB ratio of 2.71, and knowing we had Kimbrel in the wings… there’s a very real chance we would have non-tendered him and not benefited from his dazzling 2011.
Or, what Ryan C said.
I get the feeling we’re going to be trading Prado to the Rockies next week. Hoping for Wheeler instead of Blackmon in whatever package we get.
Rough week for VU Hoops. Thankfully, it doesnt matter; we’re now a football school.
Moe Berg deserves some WAR credit for his work as a spy againsy Japanese before WW2. Ted Williams deserves some too as fighter pilot in WW2 and Korea/
Multiple reporters are saying Reyes is signing with the Marlins. MLB network shooting it down.
@85 – Love the list and that David Ross is the only active player on it. One thing that makes me distrust it though. Chris Woodward is not in the bottom 10. Something is seriously wrong with that.
I know this is a longshot, but I’m trying every outlet I can think of — I’m looking for two 2012 Masters badges for my uncle, who was recently diagnosed with ALS. He’s lost some mobility, but should be able to get around okay for a while longer, and he and my aunt are both avid golf fans. If by chance any of you have a connection, please drop me a line at samuelbass at juno dot com. Many thanks.
Cleveland State? What the hell was that?

Stars are aligning for a LSU v. Alabama rematch.

100—?????
!!!!!
?????!!!!!
Free agent-wise, I think the only legit hope is for Rollins. Otherwise, it’s gotta be a trade
Trade for Hanley after the Marlins sign Reyes.
#103 – Hanleys shifting to 3rd.
Reyes and Bonafacio could create some issues, esp being followed by Hanley, Stanton, and LoMo.
I wonder if FLA still has issues with LoMo. Id like to have him.
Trading for Hanley could have the added benefit of convincing Braves ownership to fire Fredi.
@103 Trade Dan back to the Marlins for Hanley and that will solves both teams’ problem.
“Moe Berg deserves some WAR credit for his work as a spy againsy Japanese before WW2. Ted Williams deserves some too as fighter pilot in WW2 and Korea/”
Did Berg or Williams say after Pearl Harbor, “you have to tip your hat to the Japanese?”
GM meetings start tomorrow and if I recall correctly, that’s when we made the Uggla trade. Could Wren pull another big trade this week like he did last year?
Hanley will stay at short while Reyes is on the DL most of the season.
Stu,
Vandy @ -1 in Knoxville has to be a first, right?
If Bray doesn’t play, Vandy wins. If Bray plays, it is a toss up.
Im sure Wren is going to want to try and fill that SS position fairly quickly.
109—Dunno. Did gambling exist in the 1930s?
I think VU is the better team and should win either way — it’s not like Bray is going to be at 100%, even if he plays — but I’m not too confident. Lots of psychological baggage being brought to that game from Nashville.
A lot of twitter noise this morning. I guess Florida is going to throw everything at Reyes. Also, Hanley is willing to move for him but talks are saying he’s not moving to 3b. He’s going to CF.
@111
I agree on everything you said. Our chances are much better if Bray plays, even at 75-80% (which is about where he is) is better than Simms or Worrley.
I think it will be a low scoring game.
How about a Martin Prado / Kelly Johnson platoon in LF? (ducks thrown objects)
Well, Kemp is about to get an 8/$160 offer from the Dodgers.
Hey look, I think I see the NBA committing suicide over there!
[Hawks fan shrugs, turns back to the screen showing a college football game]
I think we should trade for Jamie McCourt, then flip her to the Phillies for a PTBNL and cash considerations.
That’s what Frank did, assuming the P stands for poolboy
