Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Atlanta Braves – Box Score – May 29, 2010 – ESPN.
It’s nice to win, but this game could easily have gone the other way, and in some ways was really defined more by the Pirates’ incompetence than anything that the Braves did. The Pirates got nine hits, including two doubles, a triple, and a homer, plus two walks (to the first two batters of the game) off of Kris Medlen, and had very little to show for it. The triple scored two runs with two out in the fourth, and was hit by the pitcher; the Pirates’ regulars were 0-6 with runners in scoring position and left only four men on base because of a pickoff play and two lined into double plays. Hey, we’ve been there. Medlen was in trouble all night, but got out of it most of the time.
Heyward opened the scoring with a solo homer in the first, but the Braves fell behind with the Pirates scoring one in the third on the homer and then the two in the fourth. Glaus tied it up in the fifth with a two-run double, then Ross scored the go-ahead run on a sac fly by Prado in the sixth. The Braves got insurance runs in the eighth on a double by Prado.
The bullpen did good work, with Moylan, Saito, and Wagner all throwing perfect innings with two strikeouts. Saito needed only ten pitches, and Wagner (after a rain delay) needed only nine. Efficient.
Five games over .500!!!
Our bullpen has been really outstanding all year.
@2 And people were saying we wasted $10M on Wag and Saito.
Is anyone here adept at finding cheap car rentals? I really don’t want to pay $150 for 20 hours in an economy car in Boston this July.
Stealing a car would be much cheaper.
wow, dontrelle willis will be dfa’d tomorrow. what a disappointment his career turned out to be. considering his age and athleticism, any chance he pulls an ankiel?
Another multi-hit game for Prado. Guy is a machine.
Prado’s now one point behind the batting average leader.
the braves are 2nd in the league in obp, yet we’re 9th in ops.
melky, since may 7th…
.319 ba .786 ops
it might be time real soon to make up an injury for mclouth.
@10,
Couldn’t agree more. Any chance we can find a big bat in center by the trade deadline?
@3,
Similarly, people were mad last offseason when we signed Ross to a two year deal. That’s turned out to be a great signing.
No quarter, boys. Gotta kick the dreg teams.
Too bad about Dontrelle, but I’m tellin’ you, he was a basket case the other night.
Little did I know, the Braves own the best home record in major league baseball…
Ububba: “No quarter, boys. Gotta kick the dreg teams.”
Well that has often been the problem with this team. Last year the Braves had losing records against the Pirates, Reds, and were just .500 against the Stros, Padres and Brewers, all teams with losing records. They were just 10-8 against the dreadful Natinals.
So it’s nice to see them beat on inferior teams this year.
@ 12 Rob, Agree. That was probably Wren’s best signing. Ross is fantastic! He does everything well and has a real impressive presence behind the plate. He really guided Medlen out of the mess all night.
