Now that making fun of the Nats for actually being the Montreal Expos has lost its shine, I find them almost totally uninteresting.
Now that making fun of the Nats for actually being the Montreal Expos has lost its shine, I find them almost totally uninteresting.
Well, I think it’s interesting that Livan Hernandez is leading the league with an 0.87 ERA, while only striking out 10 in 31 IP.
This is the first year I feel like Washington is a legitimate team. But maybe I just feel that way because we haven’t seen them yet this year…
Current BABIP – .180. I don’t see it lasting all season.
nevermind
Remember the most interesting thing about the Expos was that they were in Canada and their stadium had a removable roof that didn’t work and leaked?
Now they just suck and play in DC
DOB says Escobar to DL, Hicks callup is official.
I don’t think Jason Heyward was the best rookie in April. He was the best two or three rookies, at least.
The Nats definitely have improved defensively and in the bullpen. Are they a playoff contender or even likely a .500 team? Probably not, but the Braves better not take them lightly. And, when Strasburg gets here, I’m not sure they will be a lot of fun to play. And, frankly, at this point, I would take Zimmerman and Dunn at third and first over Chipper and Glaus. I also would take Willingham in left over Diaz and Melky or whoever and, maybe even Morgan in CF.
And, playing in DC is a plus, not a minus, for most people.
Strasburg gets his 1st AAA start vs Gwinnett on friday night. Feel sorry for the boys, will be interesting to see Freeman against him though
from the NY Post…
3. Here is one final item to remember about Vazquez and it is not inconsequential: When the Yankees traded Melky Cabrera, Mike Dunn and Aroldys Vizcaino to the Braves they thought they were getting more than Vazquez. They also thought they were going to get two high picks in the 2011 draft.
Vazquez pitched so well last year for the Braves that he put himself on the track to Type-A status. The Yanks were planning on Vazquez retaining his Type-A status, which is determined on stats accumulated over a two-season span. If Vazquez were able to retain Type-A status going into free agency then the Yanks planned to offer the righty arbitration. In that scenario, had Vazquez signed elsewhere, then the Yanks would have received either a first-round pick and a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds or the sandwich pick and a second-round selection depending on the record of the signing team.
But Vazquez’s horrendous start has imperiled his Type-A status. He might still be a Type-B, which would net the Yankees a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds.
However, it is looking more and more as if the Yanks could not even risk offering arbitration to Vazquez on the risk he would accept and earn in the $11 million range again for the Yanks in 2011.
There is still a long way to go for Vazquez to determine his status and for the Yanks to determine how they will proceed with him in the offseason. But the early signs are that Vazquez is not only hurting the Yanks in 2010, but beyond, as well.
From the previous thread, it is clear some people are completely unaware of the plague on our society that is Justin Bieber. I envy them. So innocent, so naive.
The more I think about the tasing incident, the less of a problem I have with it. First of all, it was in Philadelphia, and frankly, if there is a place where the response to people running out onto the field should be heavy-handed, that is it. But beyond that, I don’t know what you expect when you run out onto the field. If the guy had broken his arm in the process of getting tackled, I doubt very many people would’ve been blaming the security guard for it, and this is far less injurious to him than that would’ve been. Perhaps everyone who runs out onto the field should be tased. Maybe that would provide some incentive to not do it. I will say that I don’t see one thing funny or redeeming about someone running out onto the field, though.
Please, let’s drop it. I am sorry I brought it up. It will only lead to discussion that is clearly not welcomed by our host.
Braves 1. McLouth CF, 2. Prado 2B, 3. Jones 3B, 4. McCann C, 5. Glaus 1B, 6. Heyward RF, 7. Cabrera LF, 8. Infante SS, 9. Kawakami P. 41 mins ago
Mac: They’re still the NATINALS!
Die Eric Gregg!
Wait he’s already dead? Dig him up and kill him again!
/still not over game 7 of 97 NLCS
Game 7 of the 97 NLCS only occurred in fantasy land. It was game 5.
There was no game 7 of the 97 NLCS. We lost in six, and Eric Gregg screwed us in game 5.
Just did my part to make McCann an All-Star starter. Hope you will too.
Braves fans in a violent mood today.
OK, I’ll bite: Can we drop a proper beatdown on Livan tonight?
@15: It was game 5 of the 97 NLCS. Alas there was no game 7.
“Braves fans in a violent mood today.”
I’ll say. Sheesh.
The Nats are improved, but they won’t be better than a 75 win team when it’s all said and done. A few starters have benefited from really, really low BABIPs and a couple guys–especially Ivan Rodriguez–have hit way beyond their abilities. Zimmerman is a stud, though. That guy is phenomenal.
7—No, he was the best guy, ever.
No Willie or Wily tonight? Who the hell is Roger Bernadina? I feel cheated.
Livan dealing consistently in the low 80s.
My bad Roger, glad to see you out there tonight.
Livan, career against the Braves (doesn’t include That Game): 5-15, 5.27 ERA.
Struck out by Livan Hernandez. Maybe Chipper Jones is done.
Obviously, that is hyperbole. But geez…
I really wish Heyward were up now instead of Glaus.
We should start referring to Glaus as Mr. Warning Track or maybe WTT – Warning Track Troy
24, not hyperbole. Some of us have been saying that all year.
Ahhh, Melky. Made him work at least.
41-pitch first inning. O_o
I’d have to say the positive of that was we made him throw 41 pitches to get out of the first. The negative is we somehow only scored one run.
Chipper may not be finished yet, but he sure does look like he’s hurting. Very slow in the field tonight, so far at least.
If he’s hurt then it would behoove the team to DL him. The Braves can’t get anything less out of the 3-hole than they’re getting from him right now.
The only surprise there is that it was Willingham and not Dunn.
I had a spot open on my fantasy team tonight and it came down to either Chipper or Willingham… and I guessed correctly
Kawakami looks awful.
that would have been a double play with escobar
Hey, Chipper doubled? What year is this?
That rightfielder, showing shades of Ryan Freel…
(I mean to say that dive was superfluous.)
Man Glaus has had the worst luck tonight so far.
J-Hey!
Nats right fielder – WOW
Heyward – WOW
GEEEBUS! Who is this guy?
yeah, that Heyward is definitely taking too many pitches.
Heyward!
Heyward’s now on a pace for 50 home runs, and the scary thing is that it sounds downright plausible.
Mr. Heyward, you, sir, are a beast.
Jair Jurrjens (hamstring) doesn’t think he’ll be ready this weekend – HardballTalk – Baseball – NBC Sports.
Why is taking pitches so evil to Joe and Chip?
Because they’re morons.
Serious power surge by Heyward (with usual caveat about small samples):
Heyward this year–100 PA, 8 HR
Heyward minor league career–1000 PA, 29 HR
How far did Heyward’s ball travel?
he put on a ton of muscle this offseason and that’s got to help.
Heyward’s got the ole OPS up to 1.022 after that homer. not bad for a rookie. 8)
@41
According to ESPN’s math
Heyward is now on pace to hit 52 HR and 155 RBI
It also puts his OPS for the season at a robust 1.022
does anybody else think will ferrell should play adam dunn as a baseball player?
WOW! A 20-year old gets intentionally walked.
First intentional walk of his careeer. not the last.
Hernandez has gotten major benefit of the doubt on the strikezone tonight
At least this should be the last we see of Livan, damn his hide.
Edit: Except it’s not. 113 pitches and they’re keeping him out there.
0-for-8 with RISP tonight
Norma Desmond.
I hate Melky.
There’s something really special about Jason Heyward. Even the best rarely hit homers at the clip he is.
RIP Ernie Harwell
I always thought if you spent a day with Harwell, you’d come away a better person. Much like John Wooden.
Butterbean: King of the 4-rounders
Lowe and Kawakami: Kings of the 5 IP
I’d hang this one on the offense, not Kawakami
Edit: and now the pen too.
I’d like to see our pitchers stop hanging sliders.
As soon as Chip Caray said that O’Flaherty was in the game to keep Dunn from hitting a homerun, I swear to God I thought Dunn would hit a homerun.
Chip Caray must be wrong a minimum of 7 out of 10 times for all to be right in the world.
Getting only two runs against Livan when he walked 5 and threw 123 pitches in less than 6 innings is criminal.
I hang it on KK. He made some terrible pitches. The offense has surely not been great, but KK falls in love with that stupid loopy curveball, and it gets hammered.
2 HRs in 5 innings is a the pitchers fault.
Okay, all we need here is to avoid the DP and Heyward will come to the plate as the tying run.
Clippard has been excellent this season.
Unfortunately, since Heyward didn’t hit a home run, this brings Melky to the plate as the third out.
Can we go back to playing the Astros?
that almost hit melky AND HE STILL SWUNG!
It turns out that even Jason Heyward can’t win every game by himself.
Melky sucks.
0-10 with RISP
0-for-10 w/ RISP; 11 LOB
The way the strike zone is going tonight you have to protect the plate. That pitch was probably a ball on most nights, but not tonight.
Can we get a do-over on the Melky trade? I think the Yankees would consider it.
Left Field is a huge problem…
7 runners left on by melky…suck
Well, Freddie Freeman is 2-3 so far tonight w/ two doubles and an average up to .289.
Melky has no value to any MLB team.
Diaz is close behind.
I keep thinking that the offense is going to get better. It might, but I doubt it. There is no such thing as ‘due’. Every AB either results in an out or not. The braves don’t have enough good players, and thus many more ABs are going to end in far more failure than success. If the braves had better players, there would be more succeses.
Problem is, they don’t
@83
He is kind of chubby. He’s also a terrible baseball player.
Could be worse (ref. Hawks).
Whose available for a trade at LF? Maybe the braves shouldn’t have given up on Kelly Johnson and Francoeur.
Kawakami proves again tonight he is at best a 4 inning pitcher and Melky again shows he doesn’t belong in the lineup at all and is over matched whenever he is at bat. Just flat out terrible…..
yea…that francoeur’s having one special season…sigh. have ya looked at his stats lately?
you like to provoke. i can see that.
What are these morons doing standing there with 2 strikes taking fastballs?
Geez this is frustrating. Get us another outfielder Frank…preferably one that doesn’t suck.
Anyone know of a good reason to use O’Fl. and Venters for one inning each rather than Venters (or maybe O’Fl.) for two? Maybe b/c the Braves were only down 1 run when O’Fl. came in?
edit–And one result is having the RH Chavez face the LH Dunn.
Well, at least the Braves aren’t the Hawks. Forty-four points in three quarters?
what are you trying to say RYAN? I’m just pointing out that our LFer’s stink. But apparently your looking for an argument?
So…a 10 game losing streak now vs. non-Astros teams.
And teams are already learning to pitch around Heyward to get to Melky Cabrera.
The Washington Nationals Organization is closer to winning a World Championship than the Atlanta Braves Organization is.
francoeur? what point were you trying to make?
and ya know, you may be right…about looking for an argument. however, people such as yourself and chief who only post here when things are going bad really irk me. especially when you make poor points.
Epic fail.
This team is just mentally checked out at times. Case in point, Venters walks the leadoff man in the 8th, who then scores. Chavez does the same in the 9th, and the runner again scores on a botched infield play.
troy…oh boy.
To quote Ring Lardner, “Although he is a very poor fielder, he is a very poor hitter.”
Ryan your posts are epic fails. I could care less about you or your ideas. I’m sorry I don’t spend all my time posting on here like you haha I choose to have a life.
But hey how bout those Magic?! Let’s go orlando!
How bad are the Astros?
The home plate umpire has clearly seen enough of this game.
Phillies just walked-off; Mets won.
Why isn’t Jesse Chavez in the poll?
“… aaaand that ball is sprayed into the left field stands.”
sprayed? how in the hell is a ball sprayed? DIE CHIP!
That’s a bit of a reach, Rehab. “Spray hitter” is an established term. There are more than enough obvious reasons to sell Chip for food.
How does a 5.47 era, with only 11 k’s in five starts show that a pitcher has pitched better than his record.
Kinda looks like an 0-5 pitcher to me.
Also, how have the nationals won 54 in a row when leading after 8 innings.
i’m done listening to braves home broadcasts. if you have mlbtv, i’d suggest the same.
bmac struggling. another reason we might see heyward in the cleanup spot.
scratch that…
melky will probably get a chance to lose this game.
We’re not dead yet. If Glaus gets on base, Heyward’s the tying run. And if Heyward gets on base…
Melky hits. Never mind.
Don’t get your hopes up Brian.
Chip: “Ian Desmond is some kind of star in the making!”
WTF is Ian Desmond?
Sigh. Thanks for that, Braves14.
Natinals: 13 baserunners, six runs.
Braves: 14 baserunners, three runs.
Stat of the night:
KK’s career record is now 7-17. I know it is not ALL his fault, but still, that is putrid.
nats: good defense
braves: not so good
i really cant stand melky cabrera…
114 to 71. Did the Hawks have a wager against the Braves to see who could look more pathetic?
#72 – leaving over 10 on base is not the pitchers fault
this team needs a true LF’r
Recap of the latest adventure of Jason and the Seven Dwarfs is up.
I am on my way home from the game and it is pretty disheatening. Compare the braves and nats lineups and the nats are better at at least three and possibly four positions. They are better defensively and are playing with a hell of a lot more energy.
Are the braves much better than the Nats?Rotation is better but otherwise I don’t know.
At this point, the braves are Heyward and Hanson and not much else.
