I had the displeasure of watching Harrington last year in Miami. I dont know if it was a natural let down after expecting to see Daunte play, but he just seemed overwhelmed at times. The phrase “deer caught in the headlights” comes to mind, and to make things worse, I dont think he can hit the long reciever…he’s best suited for a short passing game offense….wonder how they feel about dealing Schaub now…
Not having played in an NFL game that actually counts, we don’t know if Shockley is better or worse than Harrington—and it doesn’t look like we’ll get an opportunity to see this year.
But I’m willing to give Harrington a chance with the Falcons. New town, new coach, new approach. He seems like the classic guy who needs a change of scenery.
But I agree: It’s hard to be worse than he was with Detroit.
Well, it’s not like Schaub is going to tear it up in Houston, the land where quarterbacks go to get sacked. On the other hand, he would be better than anyone the Falcons have right now.
But Ububba, he already had one change in scenery. He sucked in Miami, too. (Cleo Lemon?!?!?) I’m not saying that Shockley would actually be good, but he might be good, someday, which puts him ahead of Harrington & Redman.

The land where there’s only ever been one QB. I think Schaub will succeed.
With that said, I still like the trade that saw him leave.
I’d prefer Shockley, too, but IMO there’s no point in discussing that. He ain’t playing.
As a Falcon fan, there’s not much to root for this season, so I prefer to see what the new coach can do with Harrington. If he’s as bad as he’s been in the past, well, that’s the way it goes.

The reason we can’t compair Shockley and Harrington is because Shockley hasn’t been good enough to even get in a game, much less crack the second string.

Yeah, the Falcons are definitely gonna be one of the worst teams in the NFL this year. Their offense will be particularly awful. Not only is there the Vick saga, which robs them of their starting QB and causes a ridiculous distraction, but Dunn and Crumpler, who will both have missed most of training camp, are coming off injuries. Plus, there still is no #1 receiver while the offensive line remains the small group of guys – relatively speaking – with which Mora saddled the team.
I don’t root for teams to lose, typically, but if they’re 2-7 I’m gonna hope for a good enough draft pick to grab a QB.

Harrington’s passing numbers aren’t that much worse than Vick’s. He’s thrown more INTs, but in one less season, he’s thrown more touchdowns, more yards, has a better completion percentage and his QB rating is 68.1, compared to Vick’s 75.7.
That Gatorade “fake” commercial with Vick throwing the ball out of the stadium is pretty much spot-on. He was probably supposed to throw a little slant on that play.

Harrington was 5-6 with the Dolphins, which wasn’t that bad. I think Miami only started Cleo Lemon to see exactly what they had with him, similar to the Jets playing Bollinger a couple of years ago. Eventually all crappy third string quarterbacks on bad teams get thrown in to the fire and subsequently cut. It’s the lucky ones that get stuck behind Manning or Brady that go on to have nice careers.
Not to get off the subject but look how big that female police officer is in the pic on the bottom left. She looks like one of Vick’s former linemen. Wouldn’t want to mess with here…

Even if KJ’s splits are severe, and they’re becoming moreso (I think not playing has something to do with it, but there’s no way to prove it), his 783 OPS against lefties is still better than Prado’s career 693 OPS (in an admittedly small sample size).

As critical as I am of Cox’s bullpen management it’ll probably sound odd coming from me, but I’d pull Huddy with an 8 run lead. He’s pitched lots of innings and saving a few pitches here might make him a bit sharper for his next game.

I understand that Cox can make a hash of the pen and with the pen’s abuse an 8 run lead isn’t as insurmountable as it should be. However, at this point, I think giving Hudson an inning or two off (he wasn’t razor sharp tonight and had a tough inning or two) is more important than a reliever. Reasonable people can differ.

Too bad they can’t direct his name into the lineup more frequently.
I’m sure the Prado thing isn’t a platoon–just like the start a week ago against Moyer, Prado must have some great record against Doumatrait–probably hit him hard in rookie ball or something. [End sarcasm.]
sweet, frenchy has his slap on.
and no my typing and grammar aren’t gonna get much better tonight
if there was no such thing as a foul ball, andruw jones would be amazing.
PLEASE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS B-MAC!
I’m in Augusta. I think all the pansy farmer’s are staying closed because it’s too hot! Cry me a friggin river. Get out there and serve the good people of Georgia fine boiled peanuts as is your duty! I feel like I’m in Tbilisi with the lack of boiled peanuts. Hell, before the pathetic guy I was getting my nuts from closed up last week he had been out of peaches for two weeks!! WTF IS THIS STATE COMING TO?!?!
stu,
i guess even angels have their limitations…i’m more familiar with my demons.
B-Mac!
BMAC!!!!
GRANDSLAM MCCANN
NOICE!
YES! that ball was touched by an uncle!
I would say BMac took advantage of this, yes.
And we know how filthy Huddy gets with a lead of at least 4 runs….
Can we just annihilate these guys tonight?
Mr Platoon–he of the 360 or so OPS against lefties–makes the last out.
that inning deserves a Stella
hudson must have missed the “filthy” memo. someone forward that to him please.
sweet…
It did look a bit inside…
Heh. That call was a gift for a great control pitcher and a spit in the face to a hitter infamous for his strikeout tendencies.
Tex!
Does baseball need a skunk rule?
Tex!
Rain, rain go away.
nice one chip, and snitcker almost claims his first body of the night
gone with the wind! gone with the wind!
wow, i hope this means we won’t score in the next 4 games.
Let’s get 5 innings in the books & let it rain like hell.
This umpire has a very curious strike zone.
The best thing about a game like this, early in a series, is that it can really screw up a bullpen for the rest of the games. Let’s hope that the Reds really burn through the pitchers, and that Hudson and stay efficient and save the bullpen.
Am I putting the cart before the horse?
And for those of us “watching” on the net, is the weather a concern?
i think tex is a keeper
Wow.
So…
Tex can hit for power, apparently.
I’m not really missing all those prospects at this point!
Tex is just a mashing machine.
He’s on pace for a couple of grand slams tomorrow.
What is this, like 9 homeruns and 25 rbi’s since the trade? That’s pretty impressive.
JS needs to give Tex all the money that would go to Andruw. Every single cent and more. Willie Harris could be a capable CF and Diaz in LF. Seriously.
Tex better save some of that offense for when Jo-Jo and Lance take the mound and crap their pants…
That is true. Last I checked, Harris at this level has a 14.2 VORP or something, which is fine if he can keep up this level of play. Andruw’s is 3.1.
ububba,
were the mets fans all a buzz over the conine acquisition? 🙂
Davey,
I really hate it when people talk like that. Tex could just as easily get big hits tomorrow. It’s not like he has a limit on how many home runs he can have.
I love the fact that Chipper, Renty and KJ are all in the top 20 of VORP for infielders…
I hope Jo-Jo brings his mojo tomorrow. I bet James’ injury was self inflicted to avoid pitching in this park. Can you imagine how much a fly ball pitcher would hate this park?
Ehh…it was a joke Sam.
Next time I’ll add the “joke” tag so that it’s a bit more obvious.
never put the cart before the horse…………unless he knows how to push it of course
Davey,
You never know. Some people actually talk like that.
And mean it.
Sam,
If I ever seriously talk about something like that..or insinuate that he has a limit, or that he shouldn’t hit so many homeruns in one game… you may bludgeon me with a brick.
Their initials are JS, and I don’t mean Schuerholz.
Hint: nine career homers.
hint: he’s related to bart
GEE, I don’t know… is it… damn, what’s that other guy’s name? The guy that works with Joe Simpson… OH, THAT’S IT!
Davey,
All right, I’ll hold you to that. ;P
Hint: he probably watched one of the greatest college football games of all time.
Non-baseball poll up.
Let the skies open and the rain fall, it’s a game. Heh heh
it’s not a game yet.
It’s not a game until the team that’s trailing bats five times.
Wow…Chipper
What a play.
Now it’s a game.
text book at bat by andruw…
Former home run king Henry Aaron honored at Alabama Capitol – NewsFlash – al.com
I disagree with the “former” part.
Wow, once Mac says it’s a game, everyone pretty much shuts up…
We need some rain here to break the ‘no complete games’ streak.
Man, who cares if we don’t get a CG today?
Something really odd has happened in this game — through six innings, three different Reds pitchers have batted. That can’t happen very often, can it?
Sam,
Lighten up.
That was NOT a strike.
Sorry, sorry. Taking things literally again.
Hudson out after only 87 pitches…the ‘pen must need some work.
A Thorman pop up–who’d have thunk it?
I was scrolling through the comments on the Mark Teixeira Tribute Youtube video and some people are upset that they say “Scott Thorman sucks.” One person even suggests that the lyrics should have been “SALTY sucks and Julio’s old.”
They must really like his hustle or something.
Rob,
Wow. What Scott Thorman are they watching?
As critical as I am of Cox’s bullpen management it’ll probably sound odd coming from me, but I’d pull Huddy with an 8 run lead. He’s pitched lots of innings and saving a few pitches here might make him a bit sharper for his next game.
Oh man, did you guys see Kelly Pickler??!! Good Lord, that was hot. And when they came back from the break they caught Joe saying “That’s what I’m talking about!”
#128
That’s just silly. It’s not as though they were commissioned by the Braves to write the song — they were just messing around. Sort of like me, now, when I say that “Scott Thorman sucks”.
So when the rosters expand we’ll have Julio and Thorman on the bench?
Anyone else Cox is expected to call up?
Frank,
I agree. I didn’t see any reason that Hudson should have been out there after the sixth.
Brandon Jones?
Three up, three down for Mahay, that’s good.
Brayan Pena; probably a reliever or two of Devine, Ascanio, Ring
I don’t think they’d give someone a shot at the bigs so late in the year.
At least that’s the reasoning I’ve heard concerning Mr. Jones.
Prado would likely be a Sept call up if Renteria returns before the end of the month
Tex has a cool 162 OPS+ as a brave. Now that’s a paddlin’
Those 3 relievers will definitely be up.
I didn’t see any reason that Hudson should have been out there after the sixth.
You mean besides giving at least one more reliever the night off?
I mean, it’s one thing to say you approve of the move, but to say you don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t have been made, after having watched this bullpen and Cox’s (mis)management thereof all season, doesn’t make much sense.
Orr will be up here, too, I have no doubt.
geez–I almost forgot–we’ll get pinch runner extraordinaire Pete Orr 🙂
Jeffrey with a nice night…
Stu,
I meant to say that I approve of the move.
Kellie Pickler is what I call “dumb hot” though in that she’s so dumb you just couldn’t deal with the dumbness despite the hotness that long.
Once had a girlfriend that was hotter than 500 sticks of Big Red, but was dumber than dirt. It gets old…
And Andruw just piles it on. 🙂
I hate to say it…is Andruw….is he out of his….
Nah.
andruw gets another meaningless HR
I understand that Cox can make a hash of the pen and with the pen’s abuse an 8 run lead isn’t as insurmountable as it should be. However, at this point, I think giving Hudson an inning or two off (he wasn’t razor sharp tonight and had a tough inning or two) is more important than a reliever. Reasonable people can differ.
#147.
No.
To anyone watching the game, was the McCann plunking “deliberate,” or did it seem like an accident? With the game out of hand I could see it being the former…
It looked aimed at him, but then again this pitcher is kind of crap.
*shrugs* Well, ‘Druw got two more runs.
And with the lead now 11, it’d be Acosta time for the last two innings. Since he’s likely to be sent down to make room for Reyes, it would save the wear on the guys who’ll be in the pen tomorrow, Wednesday, etc.
#149,
No-wins are juvy.
They said the pitcher shot a look toward the Braves dugout after the Andruw homerun.
Both benches were warned.
More Prado prowess against a lefty–time to bow down to the great platoon god.
Rob,
Why? It’s not like Andruw hit a home run to show the Reds up.
#157,
Warning the benches before we get a chance to retaliate? Also juvy.
Something may have been said. Who knows.
Why is Moylan in?
I have been slammed at work, even over the weekend, but let me just say this game is a nice change of pace.
But all the happiness aside on this game, coiuld we not be Jekyl & Hyde and score 4 runs in the next 3 games? We really need to bludgeon the Reds this week, get a big 4 game sweep and really get some momentum.
The best part is we don’t see any Harang.
Tex seems to like the park. I expect to see a big series for him.
Moylan probably needs a bit of work. The last time he pitched was on the 17th.
i have a feeling that francoeur pulled an “andruw” and tipped andruw off on the pitch from first. francoeur sure was excited in the dugout, and had something more to say to him other than a regular congrats.
I’m pretty sure Mr. Rawlings had something to say to Phillips or Dunn.
Maybe tomorrow.
Sam, the 17th was Friday so it wasn’t that long ago, but I don’t have a huge problem with him doing 1 inning.
I’m not going to use the football score conceit this time, but how many times will the Falcons score two touchdowns this year?
mac,
the defense could come up big
This lead is Wickman-proof. It’s a nice feeling.
Mac,
I’m going to go out on a limb and say zeee-roh. 😉
looks like the bengals are making a push late in the 4th
Bengals D would give up 14 in the 1st quarter…
kali can’t even get it across the plate…what gives?
Yates stinks on ice.
ladies and gentlemen,
Our left field platoon:
.330 ba 10 hr 58 rbi’s 17 sb and 81 runs in 527 ab’s
basically, our left field platoon is carl crawford minus 20 stolen bases. i think that’s a pretty positive way to look at it. who wouldn’t want carl crawford manning the left field corner.
http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/individual_stats_player.jsp?c_id=mlb&playerID=408307
that was excruciating
I can think of much more excruciating circumstances. Many of them less than two weeks ago.
Having a 10-run cushion softens the blow a bit, but sheesh, it looked like on Gameday like Yates was trying to be fancy.
ok…but without Butterbean?
Good game, guys. Let’s hope it carries over till tomorrow.
The recap is up. For some reason, I was in joke mode tonight.
