I’m not sure how well this will link, or how accurate meteorology is, but here is the map of Indiana and Ohio right now. It’s soggy.

There’s a chance Cincy is too far south for this too hit, but it’s sketchy.

previous thread, poor Falcons…they waste all their money on Vick and while he’s killing dogs, they decide they dont need their backup and they trade him. Now their starting QB is Harrington and Shockley just tore everything in his leg.

  6. csg
csg on August 20, 2007 at 2:24 pm

Shockley is better than Harrington too, just give the ball to Roddie White and see if he can throw it, it wouldnt be any worse

  7. Ron
Ron on August 20, 2007 at 2:26 pm

I wanted the Falcons to take Quinn when they had the chance in the draft. Boy would that have been a stroke of genius in hindsight. The good news is Harrington should help us lose enough games to get a high draft pick next year to take a new franchise quarterback.

  8. csg
csg on August 20, 2007 at 2:29 pm

I bet they might go after Pat White, he’s close to Vick athletic wise and probably can throw it better…

Shockley is not better than Harrington

  10. Stu
Stu on August 20, 2007 at 2:34 pm

    Agreed, Smitty.

    csg,

White might be more accurate, but he doesn’t have anywhere near the arm strength Vick has.

I actually think Harrington could do quite well in Atlanta.

  11. Stu
Stu on August 20, 2007 at 2:37 pm

If the Falcons do such like y’all are predicting, there’s no way they don’t go after Brohm, what with Petrino being the coach.

  14. Keith the Champ
Keith the Champ on August 20, 2007 at 2:39 pm

Unfortunately, I think Harrington will be just good enough to keep us from being able to draft Brohm… and yet, plenty bad enough for us to finish last in the NFC south.

Harrington would be one of the worst starting QB’s in the NFL if not the worst, I’ll be surprised if he keeps the job all year. They’ll find someone who they can trade for

I had the displeasure of watching Harrington last year in Miami. I dont know if it was a natural let down after expecting to see Daunte play, but he just seemed overwhelmed at times. The phrase “deer caught in the headlights” comes to mind, and to make things worse, I dont think he can hit the long reciever…he’s best suited for a short passing game offense….wonder how they feel about dealing Schaub now…

  20. ububba
ububba on August 20, 2007 at 2:48 pm

Not having played in an NFL game that actually counts, we don’t know if Shockley is better or worse than Harrington—and it doesn’t look like we’ll get an opportunity to see this year.

But I’m willing to give Harrington a chance with the Falcons. New town, new coach, new approach. He seems like the classic guy who needs a change of scenery.

But I agree: It’s hard to be worse than he was with Detroit.

  21. Sam
Sam on August 20, 2007 at 2:49 pm

Well, it’s not like Schaub is going to tear it up in Houston, the land where quarterbacks go to get sacked. On the other hand, he would be better than anyone the Falcons have right now.

  22. Mac Thomason
Mac Thomason on August 20, 2007 at 2:51 pm

But Ububba, he already had one change in scenery. He sucked in Miami, too. (Cleo Lemon?!?!?) I’m not saying that Shockley would actually be good, but he might be good, someday, which puts him ahead of Harrington & Redman.

  23. Stu
Stu on August 20, 2007 at 2:52 pm

the land where quarterbacks go to get sacked

The land where there’s only ever been one QB. I think Schaub will succeed.

With that said, I still like the trade that saw him leave.

  24. Sam
Sam on August 20, 2007 at 2:53 pm

I was speaking in a very general term. 😉 Maybe I should have just said “the land with a horrible offensive line”.

  25. ububba
ububba on August 20, 2007 at 3:00 pm

I’d prefer Shockley, too, but IMO there’s no point in discussing that. He ain’t playing.

As a Falcon fan, there’s not much to root for this season, so I prefer to see what the new coach can do with Harrington. If he’s as bad as he’s been in the past, well, that’s the way it goes.

I don’t root for my team to suck so that it can get draft picks. I did that way too many times in the past.

  26. Smitty
Smitty on August 20, 2007 at 3:04 pm

    ububba,

The reason we can’t compair Shockley and Harrington is because Shockley hasn’t been good enough to even get in a game, much less crack the second string.

  27. Smitty

  28. Davey
Davey on August 20, 2007 at 3:13 pm

The change of scenery/new city/new coach/new team/new system thing definitely didn’t work for Harrington in Miami. I was hoping it would, but sadly…it did not.

Will it work in Atlanta?? I’m skeptical…

  29. Robert
Robert on August 20, 2007 at 3:31 pm

I’m in the ‘Harrington will be just good enough to screw up their draft position’ camp. Failing in Detroit and under the Saban Dolphins is not that strong of an indicator to me.

  31. ububba

    Smitty,
Do you need a list of backup/3rd stringer QBs in the history of the NFL who turned out to be better than Joey Harrington?

I’m not saying Shockley would’ve been or could’ve been. I’m just saying that I’d have rather seen him get a chance.

That said, right now, I can’t think of anything less interesting than the Atlanta Falcons.

  33. Adam M
    Adam M on August 20, 2007 at 3:41 pm

Yeah, the Falcons are definitely gonna be one of the worst teams in the NFL this year. Their offense will be particularly awful. Not only is there the Vick saga, which robs them of their starting QB and causes a ridiculous distraction, but Dunn and Crumpler, who will both have missed most of training camp, are coming off injuries. Plus, there still is no #1 receiver while the offensive line remains the small group of guys – relatively speaking – with which Mora saddled the team.

I don’t root for teams to lose, typically, but if they’re 2-7 I’m gonna hope for a good enough draft pick to grab a QB.

  35. noah
noah on August 20, 2007 at 4:06 pm

Harrington’s passing numbers aren’t that much worse than Vick’s. He’s thrown more INTs, but in one less season, he’s thrown more touchdowns, more yards, has a better completion percentage and his QB rating is 68.1, compared to Vick’s 75.7.

That Gatorade “fake” commercial with Vick throwing the ball out of the stadium is pretty much spot-on. He was probably supposed to throw a little slant on that play.

  36. noah
noah on August 20, 2007 at 4:11 pm

BTW, even if the Falcons don’t have a shot at Brohm, John David Booty, Chad Henne, Andre Woodson and Matt Ryan are all first round prospects.

  37. Mac Thomason
Mac Thomason on August 20, 2007 at 4:11 pm

Seven and a half points is a lot in the NFL scale. And Vick never exactly materialized as an elite passer. “Not that much worse of a passer than Vick, but without the running ability” isn’t much of an endorsement.

  38. csg
csg on August 20, 2007 at 4:12 pm

should we compare Vick’s and Harrington’s ruching yards? Lets face it both RB’s are injured, Harrington is their QB, and their receivers are garbage….they might have an 06 Raiders offense on their hands, better hope the D is good

  41. Hate King
Hate King on August 20, 2007 at 4:21 pm

Harrington was 5-6 with the Dolphins, which wasn’t that bad. I think Miami only started Cleo Lemon to see exactly what they had with him, similar to the Jets playing Bollinger a couple of years ago. Eventually all crappy third string quarterbacks on bad teams get thrown in to the fire and subsequently cut. It’s the lucky ones that get stuck behind Manning or Brady that go on to have nice careers.

Come on mac, can’t Cormier get off the “delenda est” until at least his next start?

Let’s see if he will work out. Woodward is always a good candidate. (Especially once Rent is back and with Prado at least playing less than totally terrible). I suppose the answer to that is that Prado has options so back to Richmond he goes.

Isn’t ironic that in baseball talk, the guy with options doesn’t really have any? Like, would you want Brayan Pena’s options?

I’m so angry about Prado being in the lineup that I can’t even focus my rage where it belongs: on the Falcons. What the hell? Why can’t the Braves just field their best players? I mean, if they were the great team of the 90s, there’s be an argument to start Prado – maybe – but they’re desperately trying to make a run at the WC. Even if KJ’s splits are severe, and they’re becoming moreso (I think not playing has something to do with it, but there’s no way to prove it), his 783 OPS against lefties is still better than Prado’s career 693 OPS (in an admittedly small sample size).

On another note, I’m not completely sure I understand why Blank has to wait for Goodell’s office to complete an investigation. Actually, I’m not sure what they’re investigating. They now have Vick admitting to dog fighting and gambling, which means he lied to both the Falcons and the NFL office in April. What’s the holdup? Act as you’ve known you would all along. And if I’m Blank, I’d be more than a little eager to get this thing done… and start trying to get compensated financially.

I was scrolling through the comments on the Mark Teixeira Tribute Youtube video and some people are upset that they say “Scott Thorman sucks.” One person even suggests that the lyrics should have been “SALTY sucks and Julio’s old.”

They must really like his hustle or something.

  130. Frank
Frank on August 20, 2007 at 8:19 pm

As critical as I am of Cox’s bullpen management it’ll probably sound odd coming from me, but I’d pull Huddy with an 8 run lead. He’s pitched lots of innings and saving a few pitches here might make him a bit sharper for his next game.

That’s just silly. It’s not as though they were commissioned by the Braves to write the song — they were just messing around. Sort of like me, now, when I say that “Scott Thorman sucks”.

I didn’t see any reason that Hudson should have been out there after the sixth.

You mean besides giving at least one more reliever the night off?

I mean, it’s one thing to say you approve of the move, but to say you don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t have been made, after having watched this bullpen and Cox’s (mis)management thereof all season, doesn’t make much sense.

I understand that Cox can make a hash of the pen and with the pen’s abuse an 8 run lead isn’t as insurmountable as it should be. However, at this point, I think giving Hudson an inning or two off (he wasn’t razor sharp tonight and had a tough inning or two) is more important than a reliever. Reasonable people can differ.

But all the happiness aside on this game, coiuld we not be Jekyl & Hyde and score 4 runs in the next 3 games? We really need to bludgeon the Reds this week, get a big 4 game sweep and really get some momentum.

The best part is we don’t see any Harang.

    Our left field platoon:
    .330 ba 10 hr 58 rbi’s 17 sb and 81 runs in 527 ab’s
basically, our left field platoon is carl crawford minus 20 stolen bases. i think that’s a pretty positive way to look at it. who wouldn’t want carl crawford manning the left field corner.
