And add me to the chorus from the last thread…I love what Escobar is doing but I would definitely trade him for a top 3 starter.
I just don’t think Harang is that guy. Harang at best is a 3, more likely a 4.

Can we get a little win streak going vs the league’s hottest pitcher?
Come on, Timmy. 8 IP.
Hawkmoon
on July 5, 2007 at 3:41 pm
Say Huddy goes 8IP (and the Braves are leading) does Bobby bring in Wickman on the road? I think he does because it seems like the whole bullpen can’t close out a game right now, but Wickman did alright last night.
csg

Harang a #4. Alex I agree with you most of the time, but Harang is better than what your giving him credit for. He’s got more K’s than innings pitched and less hits than innings pitched. He has a somewhat high Era, but look at the defense behind him and the park he plays in. He’s no worse than a #2, but if he’s my #4 then Im excited
csg

I threw it out there in the last thread, its been talked about before in here. A lot of mixed feelings towards the guy. Anyway, he’s a good pitcher on a terrible team that may look to make some moves
Hawkmoon
on July 5, 2007 at 3:50 pm
I think one of the problems the Braves will face in trying to work out a trade is that teams are going to want Salty over Yunel. That might make an impasse if we’re only willing to give up Yunel, but trading partners want Salty and nothing less.
I’d rather wait to see if Smoltz is healthy enough to finish the season. If his shoulder isn’t going to last then getting another pitcher probably still won’t help us enough.
Stu

One of the greatest things I’ve ever seen is the description of Thorman’s weaknesses as “no contact skills and sucks” in the previous thread. What an asset!
Justin Parker

Agree with csg, but only if it is a save situation. If its a four run lead Yates or Paronto or Moylan, or maybe Soriano, but if its three runs or less, you can bet your ass it will be Wickman. Note to everyone: in my head while I was typing, everything in those sentences sounded sarcastic. But its the truth Booby won’t bring him Wick in unless it is a clear save situation.

Here’s the deal with Salty. I am a big fan and like what I’ve seen thus far.
However.
Salty’s value to a team at 1B is far less than his value as a Catcher. We already have a great Catcher in Brian McCann.
For now, it’s fine because Salty is cheap, but to maximize his value, we will need to trade him. Salty should be behind the plate somewhere else unless he is going to be a Top 5/Top 10 MLB 1B for us. That means stroking 35+ HRs a year (simplifying for brevity). Don’t know if I’d be willing to bet he can do that, but who knows?
So I wouldn’t trade Salty now unless the right deal came along (which I seriously doubt), but there’s probably a good fit out there for a team with a need at Catcher between this offseason and next.

Nobody seems to know who’s going down to make room for Devine yet, if he’s indeed up. Could be up for protection, could be someone (not Smoltz) is going on DL … lots of speculation, including they could bring back Chuck on short rest to pitch Sunday instead of Davies, in which case Devine could be here to send down Davies and have another arm in the ‘pen. Just don’t know yet.
Also don’t know what they’re doing yet Saturday.
Great song choice, Mac. God, what a great band. And compared with what we’ve been listening to as the Braves have been sliding, they’re sounding like a cross between the Beatles, the Ramones, Chuck Berry, and Mozart.

csg,
#117 on previous thread. It’s comical that anyone would say it and desperate at the same time.
It was a post wondering why people on this board dislike Yunel. I disagree with the premise and with the conclusion. I don’t think most of the people on this board dislike Yunel; he’s already proven himself to be more reliable and more exciting than Orr, Prado, and Woodward. However, I think the consensus is that he will not get a whole lot better than this; he’s a singles hitter with okay but not terrific defense, and really no power to speak of. Right now, he looks like a great middle infielder prospect; if he’s still a utility infielder in a couple years he’ll have no trade value whatsoever.
Again, I wish him no ill whatsoever. I just want to maximize his value, which can be done by SELLING HIGH.

Jul 5 Mark Bowman, of Atlanta.Braves.MLB.com, reports Atlanta Braves OF Andruw Jones entered Wednesday, July 4, on a seven-game hitting streak. However, during the streak, Jones has hit just .233 (7-for-30) and seen his average rise only four points from .197 to .201. His on-base percentage has actually fallen two points from .301 to .299 during that stretch.

Mike Clay
on July 5, 2007 at 8:48 pm
Lee,
From minorleaguebaseball.com:
Jo-Jo Reyes, LHP
If Matt Harrison is Exhibit 1 for southpaws in the system, then Reyes is 1A. Things didn’t start out that way for the big lefty when he had Tommy John surgery in 2004, then tore his ACL in 2005. With health last year, though, the performances started coming. He started the South Atlantic League All-Star Game and went 8-1 with a 2.99 ERA, striking out well over a batter an inning in 13 starts. That earned him a promotion to Myrtle Beach, where he ran out of gas after a strong start. Using a fastball-curve-changeup repertoire, he showed enough to earn a trip to Double-A to start the season, where he’ll likely front Mississippi’s rotation.
Prediction:
Organizational Pitcher of the Year — Jo-Jo Reyes
Not exactly going out on a limb considering he led the organization in wins and strikeouts in 2006 while finishing third in ERA. But he was just getting started. He’ll top himself in 2007 by taking the organizational triple crown in pitching.
Mike Clay
on July 5, 2007 at 8:52 pm
I suppose I should add that he was 8-1 3.56 at Mississippi and 2-0 1.57 at Richmond.
Combined 98 Ks in 96 IP. Did average a walk in every other inning though.

On another note, listening to Vin Scully tonight really drives home how awful or TV crew has gotten.
Joe Simpson has absolutely got to go. I can’t believe I used to like that guy. He talks about hitting to the opposite field about 75% of the time. It’s like that is a goal unto itself. Got a question for y’all…
I’m no ballplayer, but since I started watching games on TV at age 9, I’ve been hearing variations of the “power pitcher comes up, gets hit, then discovers the key to his success is taking a couple MPH off his fastball” narrative from announcers.
So it sort of surprises me when I still hear variations on this theme (like tonight re: Penny), because by now many MLB players are roughly my age, and have presumably been watching baseball at least as long as I have. If you were a power pitcher, wouldn’t you know coming up that you can’t just throw 96-mph fastballs past big-league hitters?
Alternatively, is the whole narrative just a hack announcer’s way of reducing a pitcher’s development to something oversimple?

I don’t know how much Thorman’s fault that was. He had the ball in his bare hand expecting to toss it to Moylan, but Moylan was held up by the broken bat. Thorman did the best he could, and, by my eyes, he touched the base before he dropped the ball.

Seeing the replay, I agree that he slid into the bag a split second before the ball came loose, but if you drop the ball like that you can’t blame the ump for making the safe call.

#195,
There may be a place where you can get this for the whole team, I don’t know about that. But if you don’t mind going through pitcher-by-pitcher you can use Baseball Reference’s splits.
You can get overall CERA for each catcher via ESPN. It’s under their fielding stats.

Frank
on July 6, 2007 at 12:06 am
I wouldn’t make too much out of the catcher ERA comparison. There might be a systematic difference in the pitchers on the mound–e.g., McCann might routinely catch Smoltz while Salty gets to suffer through Davies.
I met Olmedo Saenz in Panama this past winter. And after his strikeout to end last night’s game & this GIDP, I gotta say that he’s still being nice to me.

Is there anybody who still think Edgar is a terrible defensive player? He may not have the best range in the world, but if he gets there, he makes the play. And I think his range is probably no worse than average or maybe slightly below.

On the radio, Pete just said that Wickman was having some sort of shoulder issue and he thought Devine would be pitching the 9th (assuming the lead holds).
Well, at least, Soriano is facing the toughest part of the order.
But, no, Chip mentioned that Wickman might close.

What’s crazy is that if you just run up and down the BAs of our starting lineup, besides Andruw, we’re looking pretty good. Obviously BA doesn’t tell us everything, but you would think we would be scoring more runs.
Oh, and Kelly Johnson’s power is deteriorating more and more as the season goes along. I wonder if this cat’s tired. Check out his monthly totals: .593, 426, .360, and .333 before today. Of course, the month’s young, but this is a little alarming. As someone mentioned, he didn’t have much of an offseason as far as rest goes.
Mike Clay
on July 6, 2007 at 12:30 am
They can use Devine however they want as long as it’s not with the bases loaded.
That was as important a win as we’ve had all year, I think. How we salvaged that game and, more to the point, a split in that series I’ll never know.

#258 – Don’t know the accuracy of the site, but it appears that this was the 6th time he’s done it in the regular season, and he did it once in the playoffs in 2003.
Gawd, I hate getting up this early. Running to the airport, but my only thoughts are: Let’s take 2/3 from the Pads & slide into the break with our head held high.
Considering the Smoltz situation & Andruw’s continued suckitude, I’d take that. Talk about 2 guys who really need the break, yet for different reasons…
Heading to the hotel where Anna Nicole Smith bailed for good. Should be interesting. Go Braves.

I crashed after Chip hit his first homer. I went to bed on a good note and I’m glad to hear we hung on.
Also, did you guys hear that we called up Jo-Jo Reyes to pitch Saturday? I’m also quite pleased that we sent Orr to Richmond for Devine. Life is good this morning.
Frank
on July 6, 2007 at 8:32 am
So who gets sent out to make room for Reyes? Davies is the obvious candidate but supposedly he’ll start on Sunday. Maybe Devine gets sent back out. Putting Smoltz on the DL is another option.
From previous thread: What’s this rumor about Devine being called up? Anyone heard anything?
I hadn’t heard anything about it.
8 IP.
Say Huddy goes 8IP (and the Braves are leading) does Bobby bring in Wickman on the road? I think he does because it seems like the whole bullpen can’t close out a game right now, but Wickman did alright last night.
Yes, Wickman comes in if its a save situation
We’re not getting Harang for less than Salty. Where is his name coming from, anyway?
I threw it out there in the last thread, its been talked about before in here. A lot of mixed feelings towards the guy. Anyway, he’s a good pitcher on a terrible team that may look to make some moves
One of the greatest things I’ve ever seen is the description of Thorman’s weaknesses as “no contact skills and sucks” in the previous thread. What an asset!

Also don’t know what they’re doing yet Saturday.
interesting!!
Great song choice, Mac. God, what a great band. And compared with what we’ve been listening to as the Braves have been sliding, they’re sounding like a cross between the Beatles, the Ramones, Chuck Berry, and Mozart.
Please no Kyle “sure loss” Davies on short rest. Free Jo Jo Reyes!
Maybe Kyle would be better on short rest. Long rest sure ain’t working.
Harang:
’05 212 IP, 116 ERA+
’06 234 IP, 128 ERA+
’07 120 IP, 120 ERA+
That ain’t no 4. More like a 1, at worst a 2. Traded away by Billy Beane for 185 PAs of Jose Guillen.
Anybody noticing Adam LaRoche? Guy’s turning it on a big way again, now that we’re at the ASB. Gotta love the guy. It’s like it takes him three months to realize the season started.
Andruw should take a look at LaRoche over in Pittsburgh. he was hitting like .089 for about the first 2 1/2 months. Hes now at .238 13 hrs and 51 rbi’s. Druw your better than Roach arent you?
Adam, didnt see your post. Oh well
Yeah Adam and in other developments the sun came up this morning in the east and Andruw struck out in multiple plate appearances last night.
After what I saw in the 2nd half of last year, I would have to concur…Adam is definitely more reliable, as opposed to Andruw.
Did I just read a post on the previous thread about people not liking a player on the Braves because he is an illegal immigrant? Someone confirm this because it has to be the dumbest thing i’ve ever read on this board!
Unknown, I dont remember seeing it. I dont really want to go back and look for it either. Do you have a post #?
csg,
#117 on previous thread.
Another Alex. R,
I agree with what you said completely. I just thought it was interesting that someone would even bring that up when discussing a baseball player.
Oh, BTW, this is going to be another morning recap. Hopefully around 7:30 CT but possibly later.
Mac, thanks as always for all your efforts on the site.
Go Braves!!!
Shanks says Orr to AAA, Devine up and Jo Jo Reyes to start Saturday’s game against the Padres.
Well, if Orr has at last been Delended, time for a change.
Davies next. Then Woodward.
no more Pinch running from Orr, who are we moving to make room for Reyes. Smoltz to the DL?
unknown, I couldnt really follow what Tony was trying to say there. It didnt really make a whole lot of sense. One thing I’ve noticed is that Escobar is bringing out the worst in some people here. Who cares if he’s a future star or if he’s just overperforming right now. If he’s on the team I’ll pull hard for him, if he’s traded I hope we get someone that’ll help us now. Just as long as we keep winning I dont really care who we trade and who we keep
Chris Young won the final fan vote for a spot on the team. Someone explain how this guy wasnt already voted on the team, he’s been about as dominant as anyone

Yeah, to the Braves. Rumors from Ken Rosenthal in spring training were either Mike Gonzalez or Rafael Soriano for Brad Penny. I remember discussing that rumor on this board.
Mariano Rivera only has 10 saves in 12 chances, was he injured at all this year?
You know, Dan, we’d be doing pretty well if we had traded Mike Gonzales for Brad Penny (not that I would have necessarily approved of the move then). Of course, that can be said of a bunch of hypothetical moves…
Thats alot of 1 for 4 and 5’s.

Hey guys, what kind of stuff does this Reyes kid have? I know the organization is high on him, but this isn’t a longterm option yet right?
Baby Braves | MVN – Most Valuable Network » Blog Archive » Prospect Profile: Jo-Jo Reyes
That was written before his recent success, but anything more than mid-rotation starter is obviously pretty rare.
dont know Lee, we just hope he’s better than Davies
Lee,
From minorleaguebaseball.com:
I suppose I should add that he was 8-1 3.56 at Mississippi and 2-0 1.57 at Richmond.
Combined 98 Ks in 96 IP. Did average a walk in every other inning though.
Finally….a game on TBS.
Can anyone offer a reasonable justification for playing Thorman at all? We’ve got Diaz. We’ve got Saltalamacchia. I’d like to understand this.
McCann is on the bench for this one Salty hits 7th.
We need all the bats we can get versus Penny. It’s too bad Diaz and McCann are out.
#58 – its the stupid lefty/righty thing that never works out. It also leaves your bench with only one type of player, its really overrated
Hindsight being 20/20, I wish we would have traded Gonzalez for Penny….what rotation that would be….Smoltz, Hudson, Penny, James and the flavor of the week….
Im just glad Salty is before Thorman
KJ fifth?!
Never thought I’d see the day. Haha.
uh oh, Penny might have a blister!!!! please please
little super glue in the blister, that cant be good
On another note, listening to Vin Scully tonight really drives home how awful or TV crew has gotten.
Joe Simpson has absolutely got to go. I can’t believe I used to like that guy. He talks about hitting to the opposite field about 75% of the time. It’s like that is a goal unto itself. It makes me long for stories about Gene Mauch. We are sooooo close to having one of the worst crews in the league. At least we’ve still got Skip and Pete on the radio for a few more years.
He can’t seem to locate. Good chance for an Andruw Funk Blast right here.
Generally, falling down when you swing is a sign that something is fu!#@#@#$g wrong with your approach.
Joe has gotten really bad because he has been spending a lot of time with Chip.
At least Penny threw 30 pitches that inning.
Random dumb story of the day:
I just met this girl named Mandie Prato. I can’t even say her name without almost saying Martin Prado.
Chuck, as long as they have either a good change up or a good slider, aka Smoltz, you can throw 96 past people. If thats all you got, then yes they’ll hit you very hard.
Man, I thought we were down 2-0 there
WOW just WOW
Frenchy!!
Thorman = useless to be playing
Renty!, Penny will be over 50 pitches here in the 2nd…good job boys
And the route is on. Penny at 51 pitches already. Let’s make somebody else tap the bullpen in the 2nd inning for once.
Thorman really is useless over there
time to dig down Huddy, is anyone here?
Update on McCann:
“Officially a sprained right knee, but not serious, because McCann is available to play, they added”
From DOB…
Thank god that was interference, cause Renteria wasn’t even close to being on the bag with the ball.
By watching Thorman and Salty playing 1B, you would think that Thor was the one that had never played the position. Geez, he’s missed a bunch of balls over there.
Great tag, Kelly.
at least we are giving them 5 outs in this inning. Good job Thor and KJ!
Ouch! That was pathetic….just when I thought Hudson would get out of the inning without too much trouble….
Thor is becoming useless in the field and at the plate. It’s time we find a regular good first baseman. Thor never was and is clearly not the long term option.
how was KJ not charged with an error there.
My head hurts from yelling at Kelly Johnson.
AWFUL segue by Bobby.
Woo Nascar!
seriously Druw, your uppercut swing sucks
God frenchy sucks so bad.
Why the heck was the infield in there? I’ll take it!
Nice to see a little team speed….
Salty with speed, Thorman you better pick up your game!!
I would almost rather see a squeeze from Thorman, you know he wont make contact anyways
he’s my least favorite player right now, I would rather have Woodward out there
I wish Thorman would get deported.
sigh
I wish Thor has just struck out…why would that have been so hard?
Bedtime for me. At any rate, Thorman delenda est, too.
Chip just gave a shout-out to Robert Wuhl.

Thanks Andruw, what team is playing defense behind Tim?
FURCAL GOT EVERYBODY DRUNK

Andruw…a new low!
take that stupid grin off your face
This is officially the low point of Andruw’s career.
He better get a hit his next at bat.
Thorman, KJ, and Andruw should all have errors charged to them right now
If I was Tim Hudson I would challenge Thorman, KJ, and Andruw to a cage match. Immediately.
The Braves have an amazing ability to self-destruct…
Kyle,
We can’t afford to have Hudson hurt himself beating up teammates.
With Smoltz meeting with Dr. Andrews tomorrow, I’m nervous. If it turns out bad, that could be his career…
We need another pitcher nowwwww
our defense has cost Hudson, at least 2 runs and 25-30 pitches so far
Mike, why do you have to bring rationale and reality to my cage match idea. You’re killing me, man. Next thing you’ll tell me is that Penny will have 3 RBIs…
WAIT
Im off to bed
Based on how our bullpen’s been overused, I’d say we need about 9 new pitchers. This is pathetic–I’m out.
I’ve got to work tomorrow. This is pathetic. See you guys tomorrow.
We really suck right now….
And some of you actually think trading for one more starter is going to get this team to the playoffs….. I’d like to see that.
That just what I was thinking: if you play this badly it does not matter who we add….Brad Penny has 3 RBIs!
This game is a debacle. Maybe we’ll win 11-10.
Inning over.
Chance for Andruw to make up for his error. Anyone else thinking DP?
I’m thinking pinch hitter.
nothing but fastballs and our cleanup hitter cant square up on one
two more in the dirt please
omg. so closeeeeeeeeeeeee
unbelievable
He was on that fastball.
DOB said that Boras was at the game tonight. Has he made any public comments about Andruw since he spent all that time defending him from Stark’s “overrated” book.
wake up the kids
KJ!
#132 – bout time
Man, I sure thought AJ had a GSHR.
I agree with Ububba: this is shaping up to be an ugly game….lets hope for the best…
Tim…go away.
Hudson needs to tighten up…as does Chip Caray with his commentary. He hasn’t made one mention of how Huddy gave up two hits to the pitcher tonight in RBI situations. Kept harping on the defense…
Couldn’t even finish this sentence without him (Hudson) giving up another shot, this time to Pierre.
Andruw just keeps smiling….
It is pretty much a toss-up at this point.
All in, boys. Let’s go!
Dreadful performance, Tim. Absolutely dreadful.
That was Kyle Davies-esque.
Moylan – great job. Better call up more relief, the next series could be really long. Carlyle, Reyes, and Davies
Tim owes Peter dinner.
Great pitching from Moylan…
Pretty much everything that’s happened in this game has been the most head-slappingly stupid way a given inning could resolve itself.
Dodgers get a leadoff triple, strand the runner. We’re not alone here…
So much for the Hudson/Penny great pitching matchup. Whatever team loses, the starter should be charged with the L
Hey a pop from Thorman. At least this one made the outfield. It’s also a far cry better than the DP his last plate appearance.
In games like this, I always like to be the home team.
More stellar D from Thorman–sheesh.
There’s nothing that could happen defensively from this point forward that would surprise me.
why was the ball in his bare hand? I hate Pierre!!!!
we get out of this again and we win
This is the goofiest damn game I’ve ever seen.
Did KJ and Thor go out party last night? Just pathetic…
That’s a play I have never before seen.
Well, I haven’t yelled outloud at my tv like I just did in a long time…
I really can’t stand Thorman anymore. He has no right to be in Atlanta.
cmon Moylan dig down
Whew.
GOOD JOB
He had it in his bare hand because he expected to be throwing it. Then he suddenly had to run and didn’t have time to think about putting it back in his glove, I would think.
Crazy.
And before that weird Thorman play, did KJ look like he was wearing leg braces getting to those singles? I mean, both of them took 14 hops getting through the infield.
Well, maybe we’ll win this damn game.
our useless players…Thorman – Ive dont really hate Woodward that much anymore, I never get to see him. We might need to get a good two innings out of Paronto tonight
I don’t know how much Thorman’s fault that was. He had the ball in his bare hand expecting to toss it to Moylan, but Moylan was held up by the broken bat. Thorman did the best he could, and, by my eyes, he touched the base before he dropped the ball.
#163 – yeah thats what it was, but I just want to find something to complain about at this point. He still beat Furcal to the bag so in my eyes thats our 4th error
Yeah, I’m pretty sure they gave him an error.
Seeing the replay, I agree that he slid into the bag a split second before the ball came loose, but if you drop the ball like that you can’t blame the ump for making the safe call.
time for Chip to get an x-base hit
that’ll work !!!
Chipper!
Chippah!
Chipper!!
Well, maybe that’ll make Andruw & the Braves mad.
Don’t get too excited folks–some boneheaded defensive play will give the lead right back.
Meanwhile plunking Mendoza is a favor for the Braves.
that will probably make Andruw start pulling off the ball even more
Chipper HR #371, ties The Murph.
Nice to see some power from Chipper. Since coming off the DL, 24 of his prior 28 hits were singles.
The $64,000 question is who’s pitching this inning for us?
If Soriano hadn’t pitched the last two days, I’d put him out for two, but he has. Moylan’s not terrible tonight, even though he just had a rough inning. Does Bobby keep him out for a third inning?
I think I’d keep Moylan on the mound for one more. I don’t know what other options there are.
With the way the bullpen has been so over-worked, I have no idea who’s going to pitch this inning. Aren’t you kind of glad though that we keep one pitcher more than most teams?
Paronto I guess, then we’ll see Yates, Soriano, and Wickman in that order if the score doesnt change
Paronto? Crap. This is not a good idea.
At least Paronto can knock the ball down with his belly…
Sorry I asked.
Paronto has been solid lately, hopefully it’ll continue
there you go
Paronto
April 3.60
May 10.24
June-July 1.13
A massive bruise on his right foot may be just the ticket to keep AJ from flying open on his swing. As noted many times here in the past, a plunking has usually means good things for AJ.
Hope is totally eternal, man.
Hope so, urlhix.
Saw Transformers tonight. Flippin’ sweet movie.
does this ump have a strike zone or is it just a guess
We couldn’t have a 1-2-3 inning, that would just be boring.
Question – Does Yates get the night off
Rob,
I haven’t heard a single bad thing about Transformers. They really must have done a great job. I’ll decide for myself tomorrow.
is there any way to see the splits for pitcher’s era with salty and pitcher’s era with mccann?
Throw strikes, fatso.
I really don’t like the way Paronto pitches.
Only the Dodgers’ bullpen in recent days has kept me from forgetting what a 1-2-3 inning looks like.
He’s too enormous to pitch normal.
#195,
There may be a place where you can get this for the whole team, I don’t know about that. But if you don’t mind going through pitcher-by-pitcher you can use Baseball Reference’s splits.
Here’s one example:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/pi/psplit.cgi?n1=jamesch03&year=2007
Who pitches next?
Groundball-rrrrrronto!
Nice, Michael.
You can get overall CERA for each catcher via ESPN. It’s under their fielding stats.
Transformers is great. I am madly in love with Megan Fox. Um…go Braves…
Didn’t this game start, like, 6 hours ago?
7th inning? Oy.
WOW! Mccann’s cera is 3.84……salty’s is 5.32. i know this probably doesn’t mean much, but still worth noting.
Yeah, Megan Fox is pretty hot. She’s two months older than me… hmm…
Yeah, no chance.
Leadoff walk. Ugh.
I wouldn’t make too much out of the catcher ERA comparison. There might be a systematic difference in the pitchers on the mound–e.g., McCann might routinely catch Smoltz while Salty gets to suffer through Davies.
Now we are missing Gonzo…
That was pretty sweet.
I didn’t think they’d turn that. Nice.
I met Olmedo Saenz in Panama this past winter. And after his strikeout to end last night’s game & this GIDP, I gotta say that he’s still being nice to me.
Edgar can bend and get the ball. Take note AJ and KJ.
Renty…an All Star play!
And Thor.
frank, agreed, but one thing to note on that is that the vet’s of the club talk about how good of a game mccann calls. i understand that the stat is probably not very accurate, but it was a little shocking.
Is there anybody who still think Edgar is a terrible defensive player? He may not have the best range in the world, but if he gets there, he makes the play. And I think his range is probably no worse than average or maybe slightly below.
i dont really know why i put an apostrophe on “vet’s”. i’m a school teacher for cryin’ out loud.
Chip is speechless. Praise the Lord.
Record-breaking Chippah!
Great HR==Chipper!!
What was with that blondie in the stands…that was like as close to soft porn as youll get during a braves game.
Even the boys in the booth were giggling
Nick–I couldn’t agree more….
“Chipper has hit two big melons out of the ballpark” – Chip Caray
Apparently, Caray is still thinking about the blonde: “Chipper hit a couple of big melons …”
Congrats Chipper!
(and your agent’s underling who will read this)
Looks like Chipper’s back. Power-wise, I mean.
hahahaha
Mike,
It *is* LA. Babes are an annual crop there
That’s prolly the coolest thing Chip Caray has ever said.
I’ve missed both Chipper HRs by leaving the room. I suck.
On the radio, Pete just said that Wickman was having some sort of shoulder issue and he thought Devine would be pitching the 9th (assuming the lead holds).
Are they saying anything on the TV broadcast?
I’m pitching.
Rob,
Leave the room for the rest of the season.
Thanks.
Well, at least, Soriano is facing the toughest part of the order.
But, no, Chip mentioned that Wickman might close.
I really hate Jeff Kent. I mean really hate him.
Haha. Deal.
If Wickman can’t go, why on Earth would they not have Soriano close and pitch Devine in the eighth? If they pitch Devine in the ninth, they’re out of their minds unless we get three runs here.
Salty needs to jack one here.
Well, now he just said that Wickman is warming up so “I guess he will go, despite the shoulder problems.”
He never actually explained what shoulder problems Wickman was having. I haven’t read or heard that anywhere.
They can use Devine however they want as long as it’s not with the bases loaded.
I’m glad Soriano faced the meat of their order.
If Chip mentions the restaurant they’re putting out in the RF pavilion one more time I may lose it.
Yeah, he’ll have Garciaparra, Loney, and Kemp. No Olivo; I feel confident.
Um, Wickmania.
Rob,
You forgot our 1B and his balmy .223 average.
Time for Wickmania….
Good start.
One more.
That was the first one, two, three inning of the night, and it only took 4 pitches!
What a relief!
Wickmania!
Dough boy made that one look easy. Good job.
Way to go, big boy. That was some quick relief.
We can only hope this means more vintage R.E.M.
That was as important a win as we’ve had all year, I think. How we salvaged that game and, more to the point, a split in that series I’ll never know.
Nice win. We needed it.
Again, congrats to Chipper for eclipsing another milestone. Rock on…
Did they ever say how many times Chipper has homered from both sides of the plate in the same game in his career? I know they said he hadn’t done it in seven years.
No Peavy and Young for the Padres series, things are looking decently good before the break.
I had the AC turned up almost the entire game. Didn’t hear a word of BS from chip and joe, except when Joe said Nomar should be happy that he has Furcal and Pierre on base ahead of him all the time.
#258 – Don’t know the accuracy of the site, but it appears that this was the 6th time he’s done it in the regular season, and he did it once in the playoffs in 2003.

Geezus, Caminiti made it a practice.
Yeah!!! Frenchy hit a homer!! thats 9 lets make double digits b4 the all star break. Wow Laroche Bat is heating up too bad its not in out favour.
So who gets sent out to make room for Reyes? Davies is the obvious candidate but supposedly he’ll start on Sunday. Maybe Devine gets sent back out. Putting Smoltz on the DL is another option.
