ESPN – Braves vs. Dodgers Box Score, July 5 2007 – MLB
So much for pitching duels. Tim Hudson only went three, Brad Penny only went four, and both gave up six runs. The Braves scored three in the second, only to give two back in the bottom of the inning. The Dodgers then, thanks partially to some awful defense, scored four runs to take a 6-4 lead. The Braves came back to tie at 6-6, and that was it for the starting pitchers.
As happened a couple of nights ago, once the bullpens got involved things settled down and neither team could do much. Finally, Chipper struck in the sixth inning with a solo homer, tying Dale Murphy’s Atlanta career record. In the eighth, Chipper hit another one to break the record. The bullpen made it stand up, and the Braves got a split in the series.
Moylan pitched two innings and got the win, allowing two hits and striking out one. Paronto, Ledezma, and Soriano went an inning apiece, followed by Wickman needing only four pitches in the ninth for the save.
Five different Braves — Renteria, Chipper, KJ, Francoeur, and Saltalamacchia — had two hits. Andruw was hitless, thereby ending the world’s worst hitting streak at seven. Both teams left eleven men on base.
That was like watching Redman, except he was pitching for both teams.
Never would have expected that from Huddy and Penny. In a related note, think we can sign Penny next year to take Andruw’s place in CF? He’s got the swing for it.
From end of previous thread: I think Smoltz gets to go on the DL.
Well, Smoltz gets like 15 days off between missing his next start, the AS break, and being the 5th guy to start after the AS break. So hopefully that should be enough.
Also, how annoying were some of the rallys last night by the Dodgers? Like the one consisting of three consecutive grounders to the right side of the IF? I’m sooooo glad nothing came of that…. They just seemed to be dinking at us all night while the Braves kept hitting lined shots towards OFs. Ugg. Good game to have won. 🙂
I went to sleep when it was tied up 6-6, and I was convinced I would read about a loss this morning. Nice to see a ‘w’ in the win column, and even better to see Chipper brake Murph’s record. I’m also surprised the bullpen held up last night. Those guys could use a break. I’m also excited to see Orr sent down.
wow…orr was finally sent down? this is the second sign of the apocalypse. the first being bobby’s comments about davies. what’s next, andruw gets dropped in the order?
I guess that’s the answer from yesterday’s question about Devine?
ajc says reyes is pitching in SD
Yea I crashed after Chipper hit the 1st homer. All I know is Huddy was really bad, even though the defense let him down a couple of times…there were plenty of bad pitches. The two to Penny and the one to Pierre really stick out. Thank God for Moylan.
I must say this…CHIP CAREY IS REALLY BAD!! Someone needs to tell him that no one gives a damn about his opinions…I turned down the volume so many times last night. Damn
Another Great Job from our pen yesterday, these guys do ned a break. Congrats to Chipper on the record. Im really glad these guys didnt quit after Huddy couldnt hold the lead for them again. Moylan is dominant right now and I’m glad he’s here. Someone wanted to get rid of him, Yates, and Paronto for nothing the other day.
Still dont know how Frenchy’s pop-up went so far. i loved seeing Juan Pierre looked so confused. Wickman looked like he hurt his shoulder the night before last, but he hasnt been overused lately and Im glad it only took him 4 pitches last night. Good game, I could only make it until the 7th. Too late for me
Oh yeah, Salty with two more hits. Even more reason Thorman is becoming useless
loved seeing Salty take that breaking ball down and away and fight it off into center for a hit. pure forearm strength. Thorman just tries to swing harder at every pitch; it’s painful to watch him hack away at air.
Calling up Devine for Orr is an upgrade in every facet of the game except speed. Devine can pitch, hit, and hold Bobby’s beverage better than Orr ever could. The only thing Orr has on him is that he is just sooooooooo speedy.
I think speed is overrated–after all, how many times did Orr use it to get on base or did Cox actually use Orr as a PR?
I am stoked. Finally Jo-Jo gets a shot.
Besides the sweet DP last night, the defense was pathetic. Johnson dropping the ball to gun down Penny at 2nd, Thorman dropping the grounder, AJ missing a grounder, Thorman missing the grounder.
My new theory is that Thorman is just around to be the enforcer. Kinda like in hockey. Seriously, he really contributes nothing either offensively or defensively. I wouldn’t f*&% with him though.
I had a dream last night where Chipper hit 28 more HR’s this year, with the last 4 in a game in Shea to clinch the division. He ends the season with 400 and David Wright carries his jockstrap off the field.
I know he’s old but Kala is absolutely raking in the ballpark that hates offense.
.291 Avg, .410 OBP, 19 HRs, .987 OPS,
Friday and Saturday game threads are already written. A No-prize to whomever guesses what the Saturday video, dedicated to Jo-Jo Reyes, is.
Think Davies might be worried about Reyes? A good start from Reyes followed by a bad start on Sunday from Davies and maybe, just maybe, it isn’t Reyes who goes to Richmond.
Every team needs some enforcers…the Braves have Thor 6-3 235, Paronto 6-5 250-260, and Wickman 6-1 240. I’m 6’4 225, and I can’t imagine how Wickman at 6’1 carries that 240 probably closer to 250 pounds around.
Jo-Jo…u got to luv that name.
Wake me up before you go-go?
And, for Joey, “I Touch Myself” by the Divinyls?
Nope.
Beatles – “Get Back”?
“get back” by the beatles would be the appropriates Reyes song.
I’m not gonna get carried away with Reyes starting. His numbers look plenty respectable in AAA/AA, but Kyle Davies looked great in AAA as well. Also, I don’t think sending Davies to AAA will do any good. He will go down there and look like Warren Spahn again. We already know he can get out AAA batters. The most frustrating thing about him is that he has the stuff, but doesn’t know how to pitch w/ confidence. You can have the best stuff, but if you can’t locate it then what good are you.
Dan, I think if Jo Jo shows he’s capable at all, I dont think Davies has a chance to stay around
Yep. Beatles. Rooftop.
Does anyone know how hard Jo Jo throws?
When I got to watch JoJo “The Bean” Reyes here in Mississippi over a few games he was usually in the 92-94 range. Sometime a little higher. He was beyond dominate here so I’m pretty optomistic he’ll do well.
Boy those singles hitters in Chipper and Francoeur sure looked good last night. hmmm…

Thor would kill for a 7 game hitting streak.
The veteran third baseman directed right-handed reliever Chin-hui Tsao’s first pitch of the eighth inning over the right-center-field wall to mark the first time since July 5, 2000, that he homered from both sides of the plate in a game.
wouldnt have guessed its been that long since he’s done that!!
“He’s got four pitches he’s got good command of,” Saltalamacchia said of Reyes, who usually works in the 89-91 mph range with his fastball, topping out at 93-94. “He’s dealt with a lot and has a real good head on his shoulders. He’s a humble guy and great in the clubhouse. It’s going to be fun.”
I like those quotes from Salty. It sounds like he needs another buddy in the clubhouse. I’m getting excited about Jo-Jo.
Have a season Chipper Jones…I wonder what he did with that sore groin, that “almost’ caused him to go on the DL.
The thing you worry about with Francouer hitting that homer is that he reverts back to last year. He showed signs of that when he struck against the lefthander on 3 bad pitches.
Unknown, Were you just waiting for the two of them to hit a hr so you could make that remark? If they start hitting hr’s again, then all will be great. But 1 night does not make Francouer a world class slugger all of the sudden. He’s slugging .432 and I wouldn’t consider being behind Johnny Estrada to be anything to brag about. In Chipper’s case I hope this is a sign that his palms are feeling better and he can get back to driving the ball. Chipper is just a great hitter period and when healthy will hit 35 hrs. Frenchy, well at this pace he may not break 20.
Kind of random, but I watched the game at a bar and couldn’t hear the announcers, who was the couple the camera kept showing in the stands at least 6-7 times. The girl had a Braves shirt on and the guy a Dodgers? It kept bugging us.
They were no one important…just a Dodgers fan and Braves fan. When they Braves would do something good Chippy would make a comment on how she was happy and how the dude with the Dodger jersey on was upset and vice versa…
JoshQ,
Francoeur also had a nice double two nights ago. Quit being so damn negative. You guys need to get on prozac or something.
My is everyone so touchy in here lately. If you dont like someone’s post then ignore it. Dang we’ve won 7 of our last 10 and you would think the world is coming to an end. Chill out
I’m going to NYC for the first time ever next week. I figure I’ll have enough time to sabotage 3 or 4 Mets players. Reyes and Beltran are already on my list.. who else do you guys wanna see disappear?
Negative??? I like Frenchy and think he’s shown progress overall this year. Do you think Francouer (as currently constituted no projection) is a power hitter? Pointing out facts is not negative. I’m rooting for him to change the facts. By the way Chuck James had a nice double the other day, thanks for the anecdotal evidence.
csg, I just want to make some sense out of his post earlier.
csg…I agree. Some people feel like if they don’t like a post, they must address the post and person who wrote it. Just nuts…lol
Joshtothemaxx…if it is your first time going to NYC, unless you have the worse imaginable luck ever, hopefully you can avoid that dump known as Flushing, NY. If you didn’t know any better you would think Shea Stadium along with the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center was in some third world country….but u will have fun.
While I don’t usually go over to Talking Chop because I like this site better, I ended up there today and found they had an interview with Peter Moylan posted that was sortof interesting. It was a little over six minutes long (an mp3 download) and while he said stuff I’ve heard many fans say, I thought it was interesting to hear it from a player.
There’s supposed to be other interviews being posted over the next few days, if anyone is interested.
hmmm…Are you the same Tony who chewed Unknown out with countless expletives the other day? Thanks for taking the moral high ground.
Yeah Rissa, don’t tell Mac but I checked that out as well. 🙂
Has anyone heard anything about more of the draft picks signing? It might be just me, it usually seems as if they are under contract by now.
BTW, csg, I love the optimism, but you could also say we’ve lost 8 of our last 15, our best pitcher is hurt, and our cleanup hitter…(it’s too easy, just insert your own criticism).
I do like the concept of keeping Salty at first and backup catcher when he is not at first. An added benefit is that it keeps us from having to put Pena on the roster.
Josh…
Of course I am, but only after I was “called” out. That’s in the past. We have moved on from that, I wish you would do the same. Or I could “chew you out, with countless expletives”.
Breaking news John Smoltz out for season with
a torn ligament in his elbow.
I’m fine, just clarifying.
Ethan,
I thought they were all signed except for Heyward, but that was a week ago I heard that.
Justin…..
Mac,
Are you going to do a mid season report card?
…Not funny
I don’t normally do that sort of thing, Johnny. I’ll write something over the break, probably, but nothing formal.
What about a community report card? A series of posts to discuss and grade the bullpen, starters, hitting, defense, etc. I’m sure that would stir things up a bit and could be fun. The etc. could be an entire thread dedicated to the memory of Pete Orr.
How awful was Frankournakova’s at bat in the 6th(?). He swung at every pitch he saw, from a guy that could not get the ball over the plate. On the strikeout pitch, the catcher had to slide into the left-side hitter’s box and block the ball in the dirt. That lazy pop up catching the warm cali breazes may have set him back 12 months. We need more of his “patient-aggressiveness” from April when we get back from the break.
Justin, my heart just skipped a beat. Thanks, I probably needed that
“Artist,
I’m not going to address you b/c you are obviously an ass to get personal with me on a sports blog you piece of shit. Dumb bastard. Don’t call my name, you are too ignorant to have that honor. The artist formerly known as Dickhead….BITCH.”
Tony, perhaps you should look in the mirror.
I was just thinking it was odd that we win two in a row and francoeur and chipper have a couple good games and people still find something negative to say about the players. I just don’t get it…
Mac, anyway to stop all of this. This is turning in to a Soap Opera
Unknown, people will always find some way to point out the negative. If they’re not hitting they want them to hit, when they’re hitting they arent hitting with power. Lose-lose situation
Yeah it was nice to see Chipper especially have a great game. He’s been playing great, but we need him to hit for power in the middle of our lineup.
Hopefully he can get hot and we can roll through some less than stiff competition after the break.
csg, your prob. right. anyways, i’ll stop it. I’m going to take a break from this board. Hopefully after the break the braves will have a good winning streak and this board will be fun agian. peace out…
Everybody play nice. If you want to abuse one another, there are fora that will oblige you. This is not one of them.
Ken Rosenthal just put out a piece that says the Braves were extremely close to finalizing a trade for Dmitri Young, but the trade fell apart over the Nationals’ asking price of good AA prospects.
Would that have meant bye-bye Thorman?
Rosenthal said since Thorman is out of options, it’s likely Saltalamacchia would have gone down.
But who would be the back-up catcher then? Did Rosenthal forget that?
This Rosenthal article sounds absurd. I don’t see how they could send Salty down and why they would want da meat hook.
Doubledawg…I was thinking the same thing.
Artist or Unknown…whatever. Remember you started all that by getting personal. And I see you apparently like that sort of thing b/c you are at it again today. Artist says:
“Quit being so damn negative. You guys need to get on prozac or something”
This is a blog…everything is not going to be rosy and positive all the time. Maybe you should just relax…
Neifi tested positive for a stimulant. Sorry about the long URL.

Rosenthal does this, he’ll throw stuff out there and see if it sticks. It seems kind of worthless to get Young and send Salty to AAA. What’s the point? We won’t be any better after a move like that.
I found this article on Dennis Dixon, Oregon QB, and recent Braves draftee.

I like baseball. And beer. And professional wrestling. And trying to be nice! ::rainbows and happy things::
Josh, while you’re in New York, do you think you could get Omar Minaya really, really drunk, and make him believe he’s actually Steve Phillips?
I promise to never use any of the songs listed here. Don’t say I never did anything for you.
Wow, Mac, what a list!
I thought I’d try to make a case for one of them, but whew, I can’t even fake enthusiasm.
AAR-
I always have a white wig and goatee packed for just such an occasion!
And don’t look now, but Chuckie James has a sub-4.00 ERA holy crap! And Moylan has a 2.22 ERA holy double crap!
Holy shrimp on the barbie, Batman!
::looks really hard::
I think I see artist and Tony making out in the upper deck! What a twist!
joshtothemaxx…
Ha ha. Are u in New York or San Francisco? Either way you are a sick human being…
I wouldnt mind havig Young over Thorman, just as long as Salty got to stay around. He would add a great bat to our team and they could share time over at 1st. I wouldnt however give up Brandon Jones or Harrison for the improvement over Thorman
check out Garland’s line from Today
3.1IP 11H 11ER 3BB 0K
must have watched Sabathia, Penny, and Hudson the past few days
Young’s a good hitter and could help the team, but yet again I don’t see giving up much more than the team gave them for Ward last year — a miscellaneous live arm.
Saltalamacchia could go down if he’s not going to play first base, which he wouldn’t with Young on the team. In that case, you’d be better off with Pena on the big league team and Jarrod playing every day in Richmond as a C/1B/DH.
Man…I hadn’t thought about Young, but that would definitely be a solid bat to add to the order. I too would hate to see Salty be sent down thought. Torn on this one. That Young would definitely be an additional enforcer…
Some people on this board will always have something negative to say about Frenchy. I’ve come to accept that fact. You should to, for the sake of your sanity.
Whew! I was afraid that list would have songs that I liked!
I thought before that Young would be a good acquisition because he can really rake, especially before I saw much of Salty. I still think he could really help if you could pick him up cheap–if nothing else it would be nice to have someone on the bench that can actually hit. But he would likely be very unhappy about being part-time and probably wouldn’t be a great fit.
Young has played well so far this season–his OPS is a bit over .900–but I wonder if he’s been on a run of good luck. His career numbers and his numbers for the past 3 seasons are more like an OPS of .800. Of course, that’d still be an improvement over the king of pop. 🙂
I also think we should do the trade on the grounds that it’s not every day you get the chance to deal for someone who has been traded for both Jeff Brantley and Mike Kelly.
My heart will go on, for every time Kali screws up?
Frenchy is going back to hacky ways. The problem is all is good when the balls fall in, like in this stretch, but when things get tough, it will get frustrating, and everyone will start screaming. meh, just resigned to having an average RF with good defence
I said on Baseball Fever that Francoeur could turn out to be Tony Armas, Sr. and a fellow Braves fan immediately accused me of not rooting for Frenchy. We ironed out our differences eventually.
Thorman is out of options? thought he had one left. Young would be ncie if we give up nothing more than one of the myriad IFs in low minors or “live arm”. But Nats might get greedy.
I’ve been saying Francoeur = Tony Sr. for a couple of years now and nobody came after me.
obp + slugging + (batting average * 1000 / 2)=
I like that better than OPS, takes into account their batting average while not placing too much emphasis on it.
mac, your a made man.
If you want to be slightly depressed, check out Max Ramirez at high-A.
Why should we be depressed? There would have been no room for him anyway.
Plus he’ll be 23 in October. Also, it’s funny that he’s not even the best catcher on his team.
How about Frenchy=Dave Kingman?
I said that it may be a good idea to sit Frenchy. My friend said that he can’t learn to hit sitting on the bench. I countered with that he can’t be as good as Manny Ramirez or Albert Belle like this. He wondered why I said them. I said I was just throwing out those names and then said that Francoeur compares most to Tony Armas, Sr. and he accused me of not rooting for Frenchy, then he pulled out the Dale Murphy comparison.
Frank,
Even Dave Kingman was able to hit 30-40 homers a season. Frenchy will be fortunate if he can do that. At least Dave Kingman was better than Joe Carter.
Mac,
Maxi’s stats at High A dont depress me nearly as much as briefly thinking back to the Kolb/Reitsma days. Now that’s a real downer.
I still say Frenchy is young and will be a good hitter soon. Again, I think the main problem is that he doesn’t have anyone harping on him for his plain stupid approach to hitting – Bobby is Bobby and will tell everyone it will be ok. I just think somebody needs to get on his butt and tell him the next time he swings at the first pitch (or at a ball above the letters), he’s going to sit the next game out. Didn’t Bobby do something like that with Adruw once early in his career? Embarass him and take him out mid-game.
I think Andruw lollygagged to catch a ball and Bobby benched him.
yeah, I knew they wouldn’t be for the same reason – just sayin’
Man – I really have to stop saying stuff on this blog. It seems everytime I post something, everybody stops talking.
Dave Kingman better than Joe Carter?? Wrong…DEAD WRONG. 10 100+rbi vs 2…career .259ba vs. .236ba. I’ll stop there…
That’s it – I’m changing my name to joshtotheminn
Joshua…I would have to believe someone in the Braves organization has said something to Frenchy about his approach, I think that why we have seen improvement this year.
However, I thought someone would said something to Marcus Giles about his approach, but….
What do you guys think of Chipper’s chances of getting 500 HR/3000 hits?
Right now he is at 2022 hits and 372 HR. Projected at his current pace for the rest of the season, it puts him at 390 HR and 2118 hits. It gets sorta hard to predict because he is always hurt, but if you take his 162 game career average and adjust it for playing 130 games, (not unreasonable given the past few years) you get 145 hits and 26 HR a season.
That makes it about 4 and a quarter seasons till 500 (which will make him 40) and a little more than 6 seasons till 3000 (which would make him 42).
I’m thinking that if he doesn’t completely fall apart (always a possibility) he should have a decent chance at 500 HR; however, 3000 is probably a long shot (he walks too much anyway).
In any case, with the MVP, the average and OPS, and the switch hitter thing, 500 HR, while it won’t for everyone anymore, should get him into Cooperstown.
Chipper won’t get the 500 HR and 3,000 hits because he is so good at drawing walks.
If he stays healthy…500 is definitely achievable. If Bonds can get to 755 with the walks, I wouldn’t bet against Chipper….
NEW THREAD ALERT!!
