Awsome win! Pretty much the antithesis of last night. Big hitting from Escobar, good execution on the bunt by Woodward, and Wicky shut the door in the 9th. Awsome.
Addressing some stuff earlier on this thread:
Betemit is a better hitter than Woodward but a far worse fielder. That said, he’s not really a good hitter. Betemit’s just got a lot of power; no contact skills to speak of. Which is why he’s hitting like .210 this year. If he was still here, he’d be getting absolutly killed by this crowd. The trade was fine; Baez was okay for us for a while, and predicting Aybar was a drunk…. well, I give JS a pass on that one.
Also, Escobar won’t get traded this year. Not unless he brings in a starter, at least. He gives us the flexibilty to dump Orr. He might get traded in the off-season if Aybar looks like he can be reliable. Also, Yuney is much better defensively than Betemit, and while he doesn’t have Wilson’s power, he’s got way better plate discipline. Aside from their positions, it’s really hard to compare them as players.
BTW, anyone else notice that tonight saw a real 1B and a 3B guarding the line in the 9th? At least everyone’s learning. 😀
david15
on June 15, 2007 at 9:25 pm
Better plate discipline than Betemit? What makes you think that? Escobar’s is fine, but it isn’t easy to compare to Betemit’s since Wilson played at a higher level at age 17 than Escobar did when he was 22. But since Betemit has 20 more walks this year than Escobar in about 50 more at bats I’m not sure why you’d say that.

Why assume Escobar will be traded? I think there’s a chance he’ll be the regular SS in 2009. I think Renteria is under contract for next year with an option for 09. I bet the Red Sox won’t be paying part of the option year salary. If not, it’s a decent bet the Braves decline it. Meanwhile, Escobar spends the rest of 07 and all of 08 gaining some experience.
Says the Braves might be calling up Pena as a back up catcher and as a utility player. Says Pena has been playing other positions in AAA.
Also, has Stark’s comments about Boras and the whole Andruw overrated thing. Pretty Good
KLB
on June 16, 2007 at 12:20 am
Yeah, DOB has been talking about the Pena move for a while, and it only makes sense. Especially in light of the fact that, as someone pointed out earlier, Salty may have been left in the game last night because of Bobby’s fear of losing the back-up catcher if the game went to extra innings. Of course, it looks like Bobby didn’t have that fear tonight when he decided to bring in Thorman.
I would have to think that as soon as Bobby gets comfortable with Salty at first on a somewhat regular basis (I’m sure Thorman will still get some starts) and realizes that we need his bat in the game with McCann, Pena will be called up.
The question then becomes who is removed from the roster? Orr still has options and can be sent to the minors. Woodward would have to be released and I’m sure we would be on the hook for the rest of his salary. They would be the only two possibilities, right?
As for Betemit, he was a servicable guy, but not someone you’d bring in as a defensive replacement; Woodward is. Woodward can also play 2B, whereas I don’t think the Braves really thought Betemit could because of his size. I guess I always viewed Woodward as a SS who can fill in at 2B or 3B and Betemit as a 3B who can play some SS in a pinch, but not a guy you’d want there every day defensively.
As for the walks thing, Escobar displayed very impressive plate disciplin last year in AA (his largest sample size), posting an IsoOBP around .100, whereas Betemit’s typically resided in the .050 range. Betemit’s walk rate certainly wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t “very good”, which is how you’d describe Escobar’s.
Also, people never really appreciated that Betemit was exceptionally lucky here in ATL. His BABIP was near .400 in his two years in the majors, much higher than his career rate (closer to .330). The kid strikes out like Adam Dunn. Well, not quite that bad…. but pretty close: ~25% vs. ~28%.
