I don’t deny that it’s a problem that Gonzalez is injured, but I REALLY don’t think it’s that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. Hell, if it gets that bad, I think the Braves could afford to sign a good reliever if they let Andruw go.
Stu

I don’t know why I waste my time like this, but here goes…again:
How does LaRoche’s failure to hit with the Pirates this year make you look good? Your argument last year—before you disappeared after being overwhelmingly proved wrong by on-field performance, anyway—was that Francoeur was a better player than LaRoche. It wasn’t true at the time you made the argument (again, before you ran away to hide) and it wasn’t true for the rest of the 2006 season. Demonstrably so. Check the stats.
Your straw men notwithstanding, nobody said Francoeur wouldn’t turn into the better player over time or that he wasn’t the more talented athlete. The point was simply that, last year, Adam LaRoche was more valuable to the Braves than Jeff Francoeur. Again, the stats back that up (of course, the stats backed that claim up then, too, and you predictably chose to ignore them).
In sum: You were wrong then and you were never right. If you think you look good now, more power to you—nobody else does.

At least the money we save from not signing Jones will let us get a couple ptichers (maybe).

Wow, I was just thinking, we could lose Andruw to FA, Chipper to retirement and Hampton to the trash-heap in one offseason. I dont want Chipper to go, but the injuries are mounting at a furious pace and it may just be time, hopefully Hampton will retire so we can use his cash so to tie up some people and buy a few others.
Time on the major league DL is service time. It’ll cut into his arbitration awards, but he’ll make free agency in normal time.

I am coming in late on this discussion but really backbreaking news on Gonzo. God thats depressing. At least this year, with Soriano and Wickman, we still have enough firepower at the end of a game to shut teams down.
The larger problem here is that with no Gonzo and no Hampton, we have nothing from the left side. Nothing. We needed to probably trade for another pitcher this Summer befpre the dealine and now that’s an absolute priority above anything else. Preferably, a quality lefty starter.
I suppose there’s probably no way in Hell the D-rays would do Kazmir for Salty and a few other young studs?
Okay, you guys know I hate complaining about umpiring, right? But this has been a really terribly umpired game. I just wanted to get that on the record.

Just for kicks, would an Andrew Jones to the Red Sox for Coco Crisp and Jon Lester deal work? What do you think?
For the Braves, we get another starter in Lester–a young, well-regarded lefty to boot. Also, Crisp plays a good defensive CF and while his bat at the bottom of the Red Sox order has been weak (in the wake of his finger injury last year), he has proven a solid #2 hitter in the past in Cleveland and has had success there for Boston as well.
For Boston (well, we don’t care, but they would need to see the logic to pull the trigger), they pick up another dangerous power bat without sacrificing defense in CF. Also, they can simply take Andruw for the rest of the year, then let him walk, since they have a CF replacement groomed for next year in Jacob Ellsbury. The Sox can also afford to let Lester go with Clay Buchholz and Michael Bowden on the way, and Lester serving as merely the 5th starter this year.
The question is would this (1) improve the 2007 Braves’ chances of winning the World Series and (2) set the Braves up for future title runs.
For 2007, Lester gives us another starting pitcher to run out as our #3 or #4. Crisp replaces Andruw in CF and provides equivalent defense, but less offense over the course of the year. Will Lester’s insertion into the starting rotation compensate for the drop in offense from Andruw Jones to Coco Crisp? (I think.. yes.)
Going forward, Andruw would be gone anyway, so trading him works out better because we get an MLB ready pitcher and CF replacement rather than just a draft pick for losing him.
Okay, that’s bullshit. He stands still, the ball doesn’t hit him. He turned into the ball. I am sick and tired of this and MLB has to do something about players not trying to get out of the way.
