ESPN.com – MLB – Box Score – Braves at Pirates
Hey, home runs! They were needed, too. The Braves were having one of those games where they couldn’t get runners home, and trailed 1-0 with two out in the sixth. Chipper hit a double, and Andruw homered to give the Braves the lead. Francoeur followed with a homer of his own to make it 3-1. McCann and Diaz singled to chase Zach Duke, and Thorman doubled home McCann to reach the final score.
Kyle Davies had a strong game, tempered by the fact that it was only the Pirates. He allowed seven hits, only one for extra bases (a double) and walked two. He had just one strikeout and gave up some noisy outs, and I don’t think he’s out of the woods yet, but his control was greatly approved. Kali pitched the eighth, striking out two and walking one. Gonzalez took the ninth this time, striking out one with a walk for the save.
The Braves had 13 hits, and you really should get more than four runs out of that. Chipper and Francoeur had three each. McCann had two, but hit into a bases-loaded double play in the fourth to kill a scoring opportunity. All the regulars had at least one hit.
another decent game. davies was strong again. our pitching has been terrific
It’s amazing how games turn so quickly!
Zach Duke is tough. The announcers were looking forward to him tiring. Then Nady went to the wall to grab a blast from Chipper, but dropped it when he banged into the wall.
Then Andruw smashed one over the centerfield wall and Frenchy socked the next pitch out.
Duke was one pitch away from escaping. But he was toast.
Actually, he was into the 90’s on pitch count by then, mostly due to BMac and others fouling off numerous pitches. BMac is a pure bitch to get out these days.
I hope Chipper gets the day off. The collision at 3rd looked bad, like an NFL running back getting flipped. If his quads were sound, he would’ve had two triples.
And Thorman is showing signs of being a deadly pinch-hitter. And Kali blew it by them late.
I can’t wait until tonight. Go Braves!
Great game by Davies, thats two quality starts in a row, if I remember correctly, has he ever done that Mac? Were these the best back to back outings he’s had? Great to see Chipper was ok, I nearly spit my iced tea across the living room after that collision. The bullpen continues to be lights out, I might actually start to like Kali…a sure sign of the end of the world..although I thought after the Tampa Bay Bucs won the Super Bowl that the world was coming to an end…..

Thanks Nasa from France–for the nice picture.I think that Kali may yet have a productive year. That said, in some traditions the appearance of Ma Kali is different: according to some devotees of Kali–Ma Kali should be wearing a “garland of skulls and a skirt of dismembered arms”…Of course, all of this is to encourage liberation from our attachment to our bodies….
Aww, Kali. He’s been pitching really well lately. I can’t believe he has earned the right to pitch in the 8th this year, but he has.
About Davies and back to back starts, he had two games last year (in April) where he had a complete game win against the Mets, allowing just one run, followed by a 7-inning performance against the Brewers in which he allowed three. But that was a loss.
And he logged two wins in a row to start his career, going 5 innings and allowing no runs in each. Let’s hope he can get another win against the Nats.
On the Chipper play, how come the announcers didn’t mention Chipper’s right knee? If you watch it, his right knee took an awful shot there. I think it may be more sore than the shoulder or collar bone..
Seriously.
I’m going to tonights game to see Chipper, who hasn’t played the last two years I’ve went to Cincy to watch him play.
There is a curse of when I go watch the Braves that Chipper Jones must fall/slip/collide on the baseball field.
I’m sorry everyone.
I really hope he’s in the lineup tonight and rests Sunday, but we all know Bobby Cox is careful with his players. Especially against the Pirates.
When I see Woodward in his place, I might weep.
“Flowers in your hair make your son the greatest Hawaiian pitcher who ever lived”
Funny, that didn’t look like Sid Fernandez’ mother.
Kyle B.,
That’s pathetic. If Chipper needs the day off, he needs the day off. Besides, Woodward has actually been playing well as of late, considering how bad he really is, so it might not be such a bad idea.
Davies didn’t have a quality start last time out. He pitched into the seventh, but gave up 4 runs.
Of course, compared to what he’s been doing most of the time the past two years, it was like a no-hitter.
So, now that we have Chipper injury scare #1, is there any updates on his “backup” Aybar?
aybar was last spotted in margarittaville
I also saw his knee hit, and was surprised they didn’t say anything. At first glance it looked bad enough to sit anybody down for a couple of games, or Chipper for a month.
And how dare you hope to see your favorite player, Kyle! The nerve of some people…
According to the AJC, it’s his wrists and left quad. He didn’t know yet if he would play today, but should be fine down the road.
Man Chipper and his freak injuries
I hope he doesn’t try to play through anythign bothering him. Its a long season, take your stint on the DL and come back healthy
Anybody else surprised he finished the game?
He played well.
And how dare you hope to see your favorite player, Kyle! The nerve of some peopleā¦”
You took the words right out of my mouth, spike. I’m not quite sure why that’s “pathetic.”
This is such an exciting team to watch.
And by “spike,” I mean “sansho.”
Ron Darling was a pretty good Hawaiian-born pitcher, too.
Brew Crew with a run in the 1st at Shea. Pelfrey with his usual 1st inning trouble, but he did get out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam with only the one run.
Sheets gets ’em 1-2-3 in the bottom. Little help, boys…
Brewers winning 2-0 in the third inning against the great top-prospect Mike Pelfrey (the “right-handed Randy Johnson”, as one New York newspaper put described Pelfrey).
Go Braves and go Brewers!
Man, Prince Fielder hits the ball hard. The last 2 games he’s hit some BB’s. Johnny Estrada with 2 hits & an RBI. Sheets perfect through three.
Oh, and Carlos Delgado is the worst defensive first-baseman known to man.
Wow, bases loaded sac fly for the brewers, Counsell scores, they get Fielder (?) on a run down too long and let another runner score. Good baseball there
Brewers just picked up 2–they now lead 4-0. Things are looking up…
Off to PNC for the game.
Go Braves!
I’ll look for the recap later tonight. Enjoy the evening guys.
4-3 Brewers now….
Yeah–I hope that Sheets can keep pitch better in the 6th than he did in the 5th…
Sheets’ curve is still working. After a pretty good AB from Beltran, he really made him look sick with that hook.
And Prince Fielder crashes another one off the fence. Opposite field, too.
Maybe we could trade Matt Diaz and Craig Wilson for Prince Fielder?
I think it would be easier to get Cecil Fielder for Diaz and Wilson than Prince.
A salami and it’s 9-3 Milwaukee, woops!
J.J Hardy with a grand slam….sweet.
That guy has been beyond great for my fantasy team. And hitting a slam against the Mets makes it even better.
Brew Crew kicks a field goal in the 9th—12-3 now. Hardy has 5 RBI in the game. He’s now leading the NL in HR & RBI.
Playing with house money tonight. A great opportunity to pick up a game. And if we don’t, it’s still first place for another day.
