Hi Braves fans. Mets fan here, I thought it might be interesting to monitor this board tonight instead of my usual Metsgeek.com, just to see how Braves fans view the game, if you’re as overly critical of your manager/marginal players as we are, etc. Feel free to hate me if you want, but I’m not going to be trolling.
Anyway Jenny, that’s a point of contention among Mets fans. A lot of people want Beltran #2, Wright #3. Willie Randolph says he sees Beltran as a #3 and wants to keep it that way. I would rather change up the order a bit but I don’t think it makes too much difference altogether.
So how do Braves fans feel about Glavine? I’m sure there were emotions attached to him at first, but now it’s been a few years, and you’ve faced him so many times. Is he just another opponent now?
Dan

A Brian Jordan hit!? Holy s***.
jenny
on April 29, 2006 at 6:34 pm
Why does it matter what Willie Randolph “sees” Beltran as? It’s what he is that matters. I think he’s a decent five-tool guy who took advantage of one incredible postseason to make people think he’s better than he is. Wright, on the other hand? David Wright is a stud. And he shouldn’t be in the 5-hole. He’s a better hitter. But someone did a study that concluded that batting order doesn’t really matter, so maybe I should just let it slide. I have WAY more problems with our batting order. Such as the placement of Brian McCann.
Cory B.

Well I was a bit sad Glavine left at first, but when he faced us initially we kicked the crap out of him. Now yeah I guess he is just another ex-Brave.

Also, I wish someone would give Bobby a stat sheet so he can observe that Brian McCann, despite what Bobby thinks should be the case, can actually hit LHP and should probably be in the lineup tonight. Unless he’s tired.
Cory B.

Time for John “Babe” Thomson…
Elliot
on April 29, 2006 at 6:40 pm
Man Glavine is not hitting his spots tonight. He could be in trouble.
I was reading about a lineup optimizer that generally concluded the best approach in line-up building was to spread out your good bats, instead of bunching your easy outs together at the end. So I don’t much mind Wright hitting fifth. Besides, as a lefty-killer he is a good breakup between Delgado and Floyd.
McCann does seem pretty sweet to me, and Pratt has been an automatic out for three years or so. But hey what do I know?
jenny
on April 29, 2006 at 6:42 pm
I don’t mind giving McCann rest, either, but tomorrow is a day game after a night game, and THAT would make more sense as a day off for him. Not because of some preconceived notion about LH batters versus LHP that ignores the tendencies of this particular LH batter.
Cory B.
on April 29, 2006 at 6:44 pm
Well why does it matter if we give him the off day today or tomorrow? Either way he isn’t playing the day game after playing a night game.

jenny

Fair. I just don’t like hearing the broadcasters calling the team “we” or just blatantly sounding like a fan. I’d much rather they say “The Angels bench has to be hoping Guerrero can come through here” than “Come on Vladdy, let’s get a hit” (which I heard word-for-word).

Maxwn
on April 29, 2006 at 8:11 pm
Oh, I don’t know. I think there’s something familiar and comfortable about watching your team year and year out with the same broadcasters. I think that knowing they’re rooting along with you adds to that. Sure you don’t like it if they aren’t your team, but these broadcasts aren’t marketed to the away teams, they’re marketed towards the teams own fans. It’d be different if it were ESPN or some sort of independent broadcast. It never really bothers me for a team to have broadcasters that are sort of homers.

I just don’t think that broadcasting for the same team day in and day out requires the same sort of journalistic objectivity that being an anchor on Sportscenter, or an analyst on Baseball tonight should. I don’t like it if the broadcaster slants the facts or analysis towards the home team; I like an honest analysis of what’s happening. But I don’t care if they root for the team if they are still doing a good job as broadcasters. The Braves guys usually do.

And he shouldn’t be in the 5-hole. He’s a better hitter. But someone did a study that concluded that batting order doesn’t really matter, so maybe I should just let it slide. I have WAY more problems with our batting order. Such as the placement of Brian McCann.
I don’t mind taking McCann out against a lefty starter too much because he needs rest, but when he pinch hits for him when facing a lefty reliever it bugs me.
Time for John “Babe” Thomson…
Man Glavine is not hitting his spots tonight. He could be in trouble.
I was reading about a lineup optimizer that generally concluded the best approach in line-up building was to spread out your good bats, instead of bunching your easy outs together at the end. So I don’t much mind Wright hitting fifth. Besides, as a lefty-killer he is a good breakup between Delgado and Floyd.
McCann does seem pretty sweet to me, and Pratt has been an automatic out for three years or so. But hey what do I know?
I don’t mind giving McCann rest, either, but tomorrow is a day game after a night game, and THAT would make more sense as a day off for him. Not because of some preconceived notion about LH batters versus LHP that ignores the tendencies of this particular LH batter.
Well why does it matter if we give him the off day today or tomorrow? Either way he isn’t playing the day game after playing a night game.
Gold Glove for Thomson?
It doesn’t, I’m just being ornery. But I don’t think he’s getting tonight off because he needs rest. I think he’s getting tonight off because Glavine is left-handed. This irks me.
Okay, I’ve figured out how to say it: possibly right move, definitely wrong reason.
Good strike out.
Is it just me, or does attendence for Braves’ home games seem up so far this year?
I agree Jenny… I wasn’t expecting the move tonight… I was expecting McCann to have tomorrow’s game off…
Horrible 2-0 swing by Chipper.
Wow I never thought I’d hear “Lets Go Mets” in Turner.
Way to get out of the leadoff double.
So that was the new Fancoeur Delta commercial? Boy, the way he’s been swinging the bat, there’s gonna be a lot of disappointed kids in the world…
I think Jenny posted the AJC article a few days about the Francoeur-Delta commercial. You’ll be seeing a lot of them as Francoeur signed a two-year deal with Delta.

Just add an L to the end of that link and it’s good.
Gold Glove for Floyd? Something about Braves games brings out the best in Cliff in the field. Like last year, falling into the stands at Shea to nab a foul ball.
Well Pratt almost came through. But if it gets Floyd onto his obligatory DL it might not be all bad.
I love the pitchers’ duel, but it’s time to break through.
Yeah no kidding. We need a little run cushion before we get into our bullpen. Anyone know Thomson’s pitch count?
c’mon, guys, score some damn runs already
No score through five. I love the National League.
ugh.
That’s 78 pitches for Thomson and 71 for Glaivne. Considering Atlanta has had 3 more base runners, it kind of tells you which team is better at working the count. 🙁
Crap.
There’ve been a lot of broken bats tonight.
Oh no the human rain delay is pitching tomorrow.
All your Delgado are belonging to us.
I’m so tired of our lack of offense. We’re wasting an awful lot of good pitching.
So, the Braves can’t even score two runs now?
They’ve still got three more innings. And it’s not like the Braves haven’t been hitting it hard lately. The Mets have made a few good defensive plays tonight, and Giles had like three balls that could have gone for extra bases yesterday. It’s a rough patch. They’ll get through it.
I love when we boo Glavine.
See, I don’t really think Glavine is a significantly worse hitter than Matsui.
I’m Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!!!!!!!!!
…
God, is it that hard to throw three strikes to Glavine!?
Yeah, John was pretty mad at himself.
Thomson’s bald/goatee look is somethin. I assume you guys refer to him as Stone Cold John Thomson.
…….
wow… vill got a HAIRCUT bigtime!
thank god we got out of that one! c’mon guys… let’s get something started here
We haven’t called him that before, but that’s not a bad idea.
Good.
I still have a feeling we’ll lose 1-0 though.
The TBS guy went into commercial saying “Let’s get some runs.” One of my pet peeves is broadcasters cheerleading like that. Is that a common thing with Braves guys?
The worst cheerleading announcers in the league are Anaheim’s, with Houston and Florida close behind.
Hopefully Villareal will get the win in this game. Isn’t that his thing–pitch to one batter, pick up the win?
This game has to be setting a record for most broken bats.
The announcers don’t generally cheerlead, but you know they’re rooting for the Braves. I mean, it’s the Braves broadcast.
Fair. I just don’t like hearing the broadcasters calling the team “we” or just blatantly sounding like a fan. I’d much rather they say “The Angels bench has to be hoping Guerrero can come through here” than “Come on Vladdy, let’s get a hit” (which I heard word-for-word).
I wonder how Hampton is doing?
Just how sad is it that I miss Eddie Perez?
I have missed the first few innings, but can anybody tell me why we keeping so much firepower (I am not talking about LaRoche(on the bench? After all, its not like we are scoring lots of runs and the Mets have arguably the best bullpen in the league.
I miss Hampton a lot.
I completely agree, Maxwn.
Man, Villareal is getting squeezed on the zone.
A good point. I probably have a different viewpoint anyway. I’m not NY-based, so I keep up with the team via MLB.tv, which means a lot of opponent announcers. Also communications is my field so I’m more inclined to be annoyed by a thing like that. To each their own I suppose.
MISSING
Braves’ offense
If found, call 1-555-GA-BRAVES
Remlinger over Chuck James.
Oh yeah…it’s over.
Stephen, you know Bobby, he loves that righty-lefty matchup.
Oh, Remlinger stills knows a thing or two about pitching.
Delgado struck out again? How many does he has?
Maxwn, ESPN doesn’t have much objectivity either, haha!
kc, I don’t think they really root for one team over any others. They are just in the business of reporting on what pulls ratings which leads them to do things that many people percieve as being biased. It’s the same problem that plagues all commercial media. And Remlinger just taught David Wright about pitching.
Some clutch pitching there.
“Remlinger over Chuck James.
Oh yeah…it’s over.”
I wonder if the local restaurant is serving crow tonight….
Nice one, Remlinger!! Heart of that order, too.
Wow. Maybe Remlinger has earned some immunity on this board for a week or so. Well, knowing this crowd, probably not.
Maxwn, it’s just a light joke, but they do have slight bias toward the NY teams. Doesn’t really bother me though.
Remlinger…man…he can still pitch.
Seriously, I know a lot of you hate to see Remlinger out there, but he’s really been pretty good this year. He’s had a couple of rough outings, but he’s also had some like this last inning where he’s shown us how it’s done. That was a badass inning right there.
We can hit Heilman, dang it.
Thanks KC. It would be great if the Braves could get some runs here so that Remlinger could get the win…
Adam sucks…
Damn we need a baserunner.
Bobby can throw nine Smoltzies into the batting order and can still do better than this bunch tonight…
We are ice cold right now.
Remlinger for closer!!!!!!!
I am working hard here guys, prove me wrong…
Marcus’s swing is awfully slow. His hands must still be hurt.
Man he could roll the ball up there and it would get called a strike.
“We can hit Heilman, dang it.”
NO ONE can hit Heilman. Just be happy one guy made contact.
I feel sick, we’re all but 7.0 games back. At least the Phillies, Nationals and Marlins all lost too.
This is killing me…
Dan, those other teams are not the main concern. The main concern is right in front of our face…the freaking offense is living in ice age right now…
…and there is Reitsma sitting in the bullpen pretending he is not a problem.
So who is due up in the bottom of the ninth? Chipper, Andruw, Francouer?
What the heck was that thing in center field?
Or, as I like to call them, “Strikeout, Popup, Groundout.”
Stu, yeah, pretty much that combination…
I predict “Popup, Strikeout, Groundout”.
Well I’m going to go against the grain and predict Walk, Walk-off.
Julio loves the Braves. He is giving the Braves every chance to win.
We love you, Julio!
“I predict “Popup, Strikeout, Groundout”.”
Yeah, I agree with this more.
At least it’s one run, one bad pitch from Wagner and it could easily be a tie game.
I sure hope you’re right, Maxwn.
Good start, Wright.
And David Wright keeps things interesting.
I called that! Really, I did!
I love Wright’s defense.
I can’t believe they ruled that a single
Ok, the groundout came first…haha.
At the conclusion of this game I’ll either not want to gloat or feel really mad, so either way now is the best time to bid you all goodnight. It’s been fun.
GO BRAVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I saw that double play coming a mile away. Sh**.
Well, damn it.
……….
It’s the same thing Andruw’s been doing for 2 weeks.
Damn.
Somewhere in Copenhagen, a child waits….
So, when Andruw hits that, Joe Simpson says, “Hits it to the left side and it might be two”, but it turns out, he didn’t mean Anrduw hit a double. 🙁
It has been a terrible weekend…
This offense is just so terrible. It’s actually ruining my weekend. And I have to go watch it in person tomorrow. Sigh.
It all looked so good when we left New York…
what a nightmare.
I think the Braves have forgotten how to win.
Or, at the very least, how to hit.
If the Braves win tomorrow, it’s all you Stu.
The offense eventually will be fine, but it’s just too frustrating to watch…especially against those freaking Mets.
This is why baseball can be a very frustrating game.
Somebody, anybody… please get a hit
You too, Stu? I got tickets for tomorrow’s game also.
We have to win tomorrow or ESPN, the New York media and paranoid fans will say “that is it” to the Braves’ season. We can’t get swept twice in a row, that’s a thing saved for Royals’ fans.
Tomorrow at four: Braves back to within 6.0 games of the Mets. Book it.
Either this is gonna be the year the streak breaks, or as I prefer to believe, it’s going to become one of the most legendary come-from-behind stretch runs of the whole streak.
Good game. I have to say it feels so good taking the series in Atlanta. Some payback ya know what I mean? But really what a good pitching game. Some times a low scoring game can be just as fun to watch. Anyway I hope next game is turns out like this one, And I mean that in every way :)Big ass game coming up. I know you dont want to be swept at home. But believe you me, I would pee my pants and jump for joy if it turns out that way .
Cheers
Dan
The braves are funny. Early on they could score a bunch of runs but couldnt strike out STU’s mom. Now you can pitch with the best of them and
now you can’t hit. It’s like Dr jeckle and Mr hyde
