At this pace, Andruw Jones finishes the year with 465 put outs. Over 400 by a center fielder has been done about 4 times since 1900. Count it.
Brian J.
on April 21, 2006 at 2:48 pm
Cliff, that’s been done many times- Andruw had 494 PO in 1999 and 400+ every year from 1998 to 2002.
It’s 500 PO in the OF that’s rare (Richie Ashburn was the last to do it, I think).

Where on earth did you get the info about the Richie Ashburn record for outfield put outs? Is anything like that on the web somewhere?
PUTOUTS YEAR PO
1 Taylor Douthit 1928 547
2 Richie Ashburn 1951 538
3 Richie Ashburn 1949 514
4 Chet Lemon 1977 512
5 Dwayne Murphy 1980 507
T6 Dom DiMaggio 1948 503
T6 Richie Ashburn 1956 503
8 Richie Ashburn 1957 502
9 Richie Ashburn 1953 496
10 Richie Ashburn 1958 495 11 Andruw Jones 1999 493
12 Jim Busby 1954 491
13 Omar Moreno 1979 490
T14 Bobby Thomson 1949 488
T14 Al Bumbry 1980 488
T14 Baby Doll Jacobson 1924 488
17 Mike Cameron 2003 485
18 Lloyd Waner 1931 484
19 Richie Ashburn 1954 483
T20 Willie Wilson 1980 482
T20 Jim Busby 1953 482
Adjusted for context, Andruw’s is possibly the most impressive, because strikeouts go up every year, reducing putouts for everyone but catchers.

Kyle S, I’m also going tomorrow night with (in theory) just a few of my fellow Fiji grads from Davidson College. Tonight, it’s just a couple of us. We’ll look for a big frat-ish blob and maybe say hey tomorrow. later
That, and… Well, there are some peculiarities in his record that a lot of people think are due to Robin Roberts and the rest of the pitchers on those staffs. The people of the time thought that Ashburn was a very good center fielder but that Willie Mays was a great one. I make no judgment.

Those Phillie Whiz Kids had some pretty good teams. They never went all the way, but it’s not like they were a virtual black hole until Mike Schmidt.
But it’s absolutely bizarre that neither Willie, Mickey, nor the Duke showed up on that list at all. Hell, they were the three most famous center fielders of their era. What gives?
Godot
on April 21, 2006 at 5:47 pm
Putouts are a result of your staff too.
if you have an extreme flyball staff, which pitches up in the zone, you are going to get lots of putouts as a CF
In 97 Andruw played a good bit of right field which diminishes his chances.
These numbers indicate that he has really slowed down.
I remember reading a BA article back in 99~ (the days of free internet) where Andruw, Bruce Chen, and George Lombard ran and worked out for an NFL scout during spring training. They all ran under 4.6 and Andruw was the fastest of them all doing 4.45 or so, a time that only 5-8 190 pound NFL DBs run. I have to think his added weight has slowed him down.
I guess it is worth the trade off of 50 HR power. Just wish we could get it all…
JB

Let me re-word that. Andruw hasn’t slowed down, he just can’t run as fast as he used to.

I’m not usually a big bunt guy, but when you have an automatic out like Pena up with a guy on first, I’d lay down a bunt just to avoid the DP risk. Smoltz is a better hitter than Pena, and they bunt with him instead?

Patterson looks like Greg Brady, and has always dominated the Braves.
Alex R.
on April 21, 2006 at 9:34 pm
John Patterson is probably the most underrated starting pitching in all of Baseball. The guy has nasty “ace” stuff. He just has such a generic name and plays in anonymity in D.C., that’s why people don’t know about him. He’s the best Nats pitcher by leaps and bounds.
Furthermore, the Braves are missing 3 starters…we’ve had two mild threats and Tony Pena has helped nullify two potential rallies (along with LaRoche’s usual strikeouts though we all know we have to live with that all year).
So, I have a feeling the Braves almost conceding this game and will aim to win the next 2.
Alex R.
on April 21, 2006 at 9:37 pm
Believe me I would love to be wrong and see the Braves come roaring back but Patterson is hot and not thrown many pitches and we simply have too many weak hitters to be able to sustain a threat…especially with LaRoche hitting behind Andruw.
And considering I didn’t get to use my tickets tonight and the way this night has gone, it just feels like a “bad” night.
brad

When your starting infield is betemit, pena, orr, and laroche and you have no closer, you shouldn’t be allowed to play.
ryan c
on April 21, 2006 at 9:38 pm

I think Smoltz should go at least 1 more inning? It does feel like Bobby is now “conceding” this game.
But I guess Bobby is seeing the big picture and saving Smoltzie’s arm throughout the year.
Plus, the bullpen hasn’t worked in like 4 days.
brad
on April 21, 2006 at 9:40 pm
Cox conceeding this one. Jordan pinch hitting (and popping out) for Smoltz in the 6th…
Alex R.
on April 21, 2006 at 9:42 pm
I normally criticize Cox and I am against ever conceding a game, but I think Cox looks at his triple AAA lineup against a stud like Patterson (plus, its now late) that I dont disagree with taking him out, let the bullpen get some work in and so be it.
Alex R.
on April 21, 2006 at 9:43 pm
Plus, the bullpen has to be antsy…2 complete games on Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday off, it means no relivers have pitched since Monday.

Now Tom Pacieorek is also a nice guy (met him at spring training in trhe 80’s), but he’s a crappy announcer.
As for Cox conceding, well, I am normally against this but he sees his terrible lineup and a LATE night start and he realizes there’s pretty much nothing they can do tonight against Patterson. He’s the only stud Nats starter so the Braves, even with some Mickey Mouse hitters, have a good chance to win the next 2 here.

I think it’ll be interesting to see if the streak’s still going when Bobby retires (remember, his streak is one year longer with Toronto in ’85 (?). If it is but is broken the next year under the new manager, I think we’ll gain more appreciation for Cox and what he did. Even if we did win despite him, the fact still remains that it has been 14 straight titles. You’d think if he was so terrible he would have managed to blotch at least one of those. Especially one of the years where we only won by a few games.

But how about Soriano? Should the Braves fear him more than Utley?
Nick
on April 21, 2006 at 11:27 pm
I’ve had problems with a bunch of moves Cox has made this year, but I really don’t see what Cox should’ve done differently tonight. You gotta set up the double play by walking Ward. Brining in Remlinger is a good move, I think. It’s not like Cormier is doing anything worth a damn, and bringing in Remlinger forces Robinson to make a move to the righthander, and Remlinger is better getting righthanders out anyway. Then what’s the problem with bringing Villarreal in? What, Remlinger was doing something that I wasn’t noticing? Also, walking Soriano in that situation makes no sense. First of all, batting next is Jose Vidro, so your prospects aren’t much better there, and he’s also a lefty. Alfonso Soriano is just not good enough where you walk him against all these factors. He’s not Albery Pujols or Andruw Jones or something. Obviously he’s capable of having a good day, but if you don’t have confidence that you can get Alfonso Soriano out, perhaps you should just hang it up.
And you people who wanted Reitsma in that situation have lost your freaking minds. Maybe you’ve forgotten in the week since he pitched, but Chris Reitsma sucks!!! Yes, worse than both Villarreal and Remlinger…perhaps combined. Chris Reitsma is the worst pitcher we have in that bullpen at the moment (this is why it’s so stupid that we have him as our closer, remember?). I realize it’s frustrating, but let’s not go batshit insane here, folks.
We didn’t really deserve this game anyway, and the cat was kind of out of the bag when Remlinger threw the wild pitch. Blaming this game on Bobby Cox is nonsensical, in my opinion.
Nick

Albery Pujols is Albert’s evil twin, by the way.
'Rissa

I think the key to the success of the last 15 years has been JS getting the guys and turning them over to Bobby, who runs a clubhouse where everyone feels equal and manages to get the most out of the players given to him. Even if his in-game decisions need to be questioned, the loyalty he gets from his players can’t be. I wonder if Andruw would still be around if someone other than Bobby had been managing when he signed that contract. How about Smoltz?
Most players love Cox and their opinion is really all that matters since they’re the ones playing for him. As long as he keeps winning, though, I love him too.
I fear Utley more than Soriano. Soriano has power, but I’m scared to death every time Utley walks to the plate.
ububba
on April 21, 2006 at 11:39 pm
This is our bullpen and, as unpredictable as it is, we’re gonna have games like this. So you bring in James instead of Remlinger…doesn’t mean he’s going to succeed. Wish he had that chance, but if James threw a wild pitch, people would bitch about that, too.
SD 1, NYM 1, top 9, Hoffman pitching to Matsui with 2 outs & Floyd on first.
david15
on April 21, 2006 at 11:39 pm
i’m pissed. over the last three years daryle ward has a .610 ops against lefties. chuck james is absolutely filthy against lefties. lance cormier? mike remlinger? not so much. so, bobby, why the hell not bring in james with one out and a guy on third to face ward with another lefty in schneider on deck? they want to let ward hit against james? tell your best strikeout pitcher in the bullpen to get you a strikeout. if they bring in the righty to face james, walk him and face schneider. if they hit for schneider, who cares? whoever it would have been would have been even worse than matt f. lecroy.
it’s unfuckingbelievable to intentionally walk (with a 1-1 count no less) a lefty hitter with a righty reliever when another lefty is on deck. why the hell not bring in the lefty to see if they’ll waste a pinch hitter? it’s lazy managing more than bad managing. nice job of completely wasting a three run eighth inning comeback, cox.

Yeah…you bring in a junkballer who isn’t a situational pitcher and has a nasty tendeny to give up fly balls to go in their and get a strikeout against a guy who can hit the ball nine miles and only needs a fly ball to give the Nats the lead, rather than walk him, set up the double play that can get you out of the inning with one pitch and bring in a pitcher good at inducing double-play balls to face a guy who is guaranteed to be doubled up if he hits it on the ground. Makes total sense to me.

Not anymore, SD tops NYM 2-1 in 14.
With Blum on first, B. Giles sliced one down the LF line. Floyd took a bad angle & it got past him. By the time he dug it out, Blum came all the way around from first barely beating Reyes’ relay.
A little good news before bed. Nighty-night & Let’s Go Devils.
david15
on April 22, 2006 at 2:22 am
nick, first off, remlinger is good at inducing double play groundouts? i’d think he’d have done it more often over the years if that’s the case. the guy who was already out there was the best bet to induce a double play, but that isn’t even my point.
the point is ward is terrible against lefties. sure, he can hit a ball “nine miles,” and against james he might well have, but since he has exactly one homer against lefties over the last three seasons i’d take the superb odds against it. since he’s terrible against lefties, robinson probably would have pinch hit lecroy. then, walk lecroy and you have lefty/lefty in james/schneider; or, hell, allow james to pitch to fat ass lecroy, who strikes out an ungodly and obscene amount, and see what happens.
instead, cox pulled the intentional walk idea out of his ass, as if a hitter is much more likely to drive in a run from third with a 1-1 count as opposed to an 0-0 count.
if he’d have even just brought in remlinger to face ward it would have been alright. but cox’s decision-making was underwrought and faulty, and allowed frank robinson to dictate the matchup instead of the other way around.

I am just glad that McBride will be coming back soon. Tonight is the kind of moment which having McBride will be very helpful…assuming Bobby wouldn’t use Remlinger ahead of him…
I hope our game plan is for everyone to try to hit balls to left field
I hope our game plan is to hit Smoltz ahead of Tony Pena
How many Braves Journal-ers are gonna be at the games this weekend?
I plan on going tonight and tomorrow (*knock on wood*). I’ll either be the guy asked to leave the nice seats or the lazy guy sitting in the high seats where his tickets say he should sit.
At this pace, Andruw Jones finishes the year with 465 put outs. Over 400 by a center fielder has been done about 4 times since 1900. Count it.
Cliff, that’s been done many times- Andruw had 494 PO in 1999 and 400+ every year from 1998 to 2002.
It’s 500 PO in the OF that’s rare (Richie Ashburn was the last to do it, I think).
Any updates on Marcus – I didn’t want to wade through the 300+ posts from the last thread
In case anyone cares, MLB Press Pass is reporting that Prado is taking Moylan’s place on the roster, making that kind of official.
Yea… they called up Prado from Mississippi today I believe. …they’re sending Moylan back to AAA since the bullpen has had basically 3 full days of rest. Prado looked very good in the two games I saw him in last weekend!
…haven’t heard any updates on Marcus and unless I missed something in the last thread I don’t remember anyone posting anything there either.
See you there, ermoore. Marcus has a sprained ligament in a finger. Looks like he’s off for the weekend series, but not yet headed to the DL

Here is something funny from college football. Rick and Casey Clausen say there brother is better than they are right now. Well that can’t be too hard, because my brother (14) is better than both of them right now.
Go luck with this one Irish, ha ha ha!
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/news/story?id=2416943
Oh… haha sorry… I was thinking an update as of today… I didn’t think about you possibly meaning what they had found out yesterday.
Sorry!
I’m going tomorrow night with my wife, baby, and 40 Fiji undergrads from UVA (my fraternity while I was in school) as well as some of my fellow fiji alums.
I assume that since the u-grads bought the tix, they will be dirt cheap and awful. See y’all from the nosebleeds!
Smitty, Jimmy Clausen is ridiculously good. It’s a serious blow to the UT program that they couldn’t land him.
In this day and age where college football coaches are so much PR guys, would you want to play for Fulmer?
Lots of guys in the SEC (Tuberville/Richt/Spurrier/Miles/Meyer) seem more appealing.
I could use a serious blow to my program.
JH
Where on earth did you get the info about the Richie Ashburn record for outfield put outs? Is anything like that on the web somewhere?
You played with him, Red, you should know.
That’s not fair
i don’t think. Is it?
Red Schoendienst in German spells F-U-N.

We’ll look for a big frat-ish blob and maybe say hey tomorrow. later
Alex R. will be there tonight unless he’s convinced the weather won’t allow it.

I find it interesting that there is a consistent series of 20-year gaps in the put-out stats above.
Alex R, I’m Wryn, go to school in Auburn .. heck, everybody can befriend me, I don’t mind.
Richie Ashburn must have been a pretty f***in good center fielder.
What gives?

Just wish we could get it all…
Let me re-word that. Andruw hasn’t slowed down, he just can’t run as fast as he used to.
anyone else having trouble getting the game on mlb tv?
scratch that..its working now 🙂
Does anybody know where I can catch the game in an audio feed?
I don’t think it’s going to matter for a while, looks like a downpour at RFK.
Ugh… it’s raining pretty hard right now
Try http://www.thegamelive.com. I’ve never used it, but people keep linking to it. It might have something. (And BTW, since AAR never answered your question, he goes to Yale). I have been putzing around on Facebook all day and found some interesting people. The trick is to think of people that are slightly famous, but not so famous that they would be cyber-accosted and not put up a profile. I found Barry Bonds’ son on there.
Anyone else see this? Ugh…
From ajc.com:
Left-hander Macay McBride was tagged for five runs in two innings of what was expected to be his final rehab appearance at Class AA Mississippi. He could be activated this weekend.
Yea… he had a rough outing in his last appearance which was supposed to be his last one. All of his other outings were really good though. …I read somewhere that he’s supposed to be back in the pen with the Braves tonight… haven’t heard anything else so I don’t know
Listening to the R-Braves on TheGameLive.com. They use the WXGI feed. Sounds good, except for Richmond trailing 7-0.
still raining… still comin’ down pretty hard
it should be moving through soon… it’ll take a little while and it’s hard rain but it’s moving through
actually, “Red schoen dienst” in German means “Talk so as to serve well”. I really did appreciate the work that went into showing us the numbers on the outfielders! But if pitching UP is part of the key, what explains Andru working behind OUR guys?
I hope we start soon. Meanwhile, ESPN Singapore is showing the Yanks-Orioles. It was bad enough to get up and see Jeter triple, but to see Leo rockin in the dugout is not exactly the way I like to begin the day…
McBride has looked great and I think that we will see him soon.
While I’m sitting here bored…lol
anyone know what any of the players’ songs are this year… you know when they come up to bat
I’m watching the Blue Jays game right now, and every time they pan onto JP Ricciardi as Burnett gets another ball whacked off him, you can see him actively developing an ulcer. It’s great fun.
Okay, the odds are no recap tonight because I have a thing to do in the morning and I don’t believe this will be done by ten (if it gets started at all).
I wonder why pitchers still bother pitching to Albert Pujols…
They said they loook to get the game going in a little while… rain should be letting up very soon.
DOB @ the ajc just said…
We?ll get this game in tonight, I?m told, because there?s lot of clear skies in about 20 minutes. But tomorrow?s game doesn?t look promising. Supposed to rain at least an inch, all day, thunderstoms, etc. Then again, we played that night in L.A. after it rained the entire day, right up until game time, so?.
Just thinking/hoping out loud…
If a new owner takes over before the All-Star Break, how about making a huge splash by signing Clemens for the 2nd half?
The radar looks much better and they are taking the tarp off the infield. We are going to get this in tonight.
First pitch scheduled for 9:17 eastern
pujols is incredible. a homerun, a double, and 4 rbi’s in 2 innings. ridiculous!
just a few more minutes!
I like how the commercials FSN runs with the Braves reminding folks about how they play and how the folks should be watching them play instead of going to meet a girl’s parents, see a long-lost friend, etc..
..how the announcer in the background is always a Turner Sports guy and not FSN. Funny.
Oh, that’s a great start John…
i think smoltzie’s stuff is too live. it is cutting out of the strike zone
I heart Ryan Langerhans.
Wow, The radar might be off .. but that pitch just clocked in a 99 MPH..
not a good start but hopefully john will settle in and we’ll rebound
As of today, what do you guys see Langerhans stats ending at? I’m really inclined to say he’ll finish around .310/.385/.470 with 15 HRs. That really isn’t bad with Gold Glove-caliber defense.
That’s a pretty cool play by little Pena…
When did the Braves get Ozzie Smith?
Sounds like Little Tony Pe?a is putting on a clinic.
Pena Jr. in the field appears to be something of a revelation…
Good side effect of Tony Pena being in the vicinity: Brian McCann can finally get out of the 8-spot and potentially see some halfway decent pitches.
Also, this has always bothered me: Was Royce Clayton the first batter faced by ancient D-Rays reliever Jim Morris in the heartwarming Disney *masterpiece* “The Rookie?” Anyone know?
Hasn’t McCann been in the seven spot all year? I thought Langerhans was hitting 8th before…
I’m not usually a big bunt guy, but when you have an automatic out like Pena up with a guy on first, I’d lay down a bunt just to avoid the DP risk. Smoltz is a better hitter than Pena, and they bunt with him instead?
Hm. Is Gameday behind? I have Pena coming up now.
pete orr looks nervous
I hate Zimmerman…
wow!
that might be the catch of the year in this young season.
Good call Joey, but you know Bobby will not do that, haha!
No more GameDay. I’m listening now.
Don’t ever throw him another strike…
…more specifically…fastball strikes.
Maybe he actually is a good hitter?
I curse you, Alfonso.
Also, Tom Paciorek still sucks at his job. Poor Bob Carpenter is too good to be paired up with this putz.
Soriano is a great fastball hitter…treat that kid like Ron Gant.
I am so glad I don’t have to hear the voice of Paciorek anymore.
Anybody else watching FSN? We’ve decided to put Ken Rosenthal in a suit about half a mile from the camera and have him give anlysis during the Braves’ half of innings.
This is worse than Paciorek.
Hey All,
I was supposed to go to the game tonight but banked (incorrectly) that the game would be rained out. The worst part? My tickets weren’t free. So, I ended up taking my wife out to dinner instead and I return home to see Smoltzie down 3-0. Kind of a depressing night all the way around. 🙁
I know how you feel Alex. My little girl’s softball team lost the opening game of her first tournament and now the Braves are down. When will Spring Training end with the Braves?
I’m going to bed now. Recap in the morning sometime.
http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060421&content_id=1411576&vkey=news_atl&fext=.jsp&c_id=atl
Seems like Chipper, Marcus, and Edgar will all be coming back pretty soon. McBride is heading to Richmond…and Chipper is still an outfielder according to MLB.com.
is it just me or do the braves not look up to playing tonight? this is a very dull team right now.
Credit Patterson some. Guy is filthy tonight.
Rayn, you will get this feeling on the offense when the Braves have Orr and Pena in the lineup at the same time.
Alex, sorry to hear about your night…hey we still have four more innings to come back!
Patterson looks like Greg Brady, and has always dominated the Braves.
When your starting infield is betemit, pena, orr, and laroche and you have no closer, you shouldn’t be allowed to play.
can you dh any position or does it have to be the pitcher? if the braves were an al team (or playing interleague play), i think they might dh for pena jr. he is atrocious at the plate.
It has to be the pitcher. What a weird rule.
I think Smoltz should go at least 1 more inning? It does feel like Bobby is now “conceding” this game.
But I guess Bobby is seeing the big picture and saving Smoltzie’s arm throughout the year.
Plus, the bullpen hasn’t worked in like 4 days.
Cox conceeding this one. Jordan pinch hitting (and popping out) for Smoltz in the 6th…
I normally criticize Cox and I am against ever conceding a game, but I think Cox looks at his triple AAA lineup against a stud like Patterson (plus, its now late) that I dont disagree with taking him out, let the bullpen get some work in and so be it.
Plus, the bullpen has to be antsy…2 complete games on Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday off, it means no relivers have pitched since Monday.
Yep. Just a shame that we concede games like this against teams like the Nats with our ‘ace’ pitching.
Hooray for useless segments – what’s this with fans analyzing the game?
Yes, Smoltz is our ace and he’s made a few mistakes but live to fight another day with the likes of LaRoche, Orr, Pena in the lineup.
By the way, these Nats/MASN announcers are just plain HORRIBLE…AWFUL…TERRIBLE.
Is it a problem that Cox also conceded Wednesday’s game too against the Mets? Is he just taking the rest of April off?
I hear you, Alex. They are just hideous. Incredibly stupid. MLB.TV keeps switching feeds for some reason, so I’m only subjected to them at half-dosage, but I’ve watched enough MASN when I’m home to know that they are ignorant homers. Ick.
FSN’s radar gun is the most random thing ever.
Bob Carpenter is tolerable, however, Tom Paciorek makes me want to gouge my ear drums out with a knitting needle.
Alex, those MASN announcers were pretty terrible last year. Adding Paciorek to the mix is just perfect!
Langy is having a very tough night…
man… this is a tough night all together lol
Why were the fans yelling “Chipper” when it was Andruw at the plate?!
kc-
Actually, I really liked Ron Darling a lot…smart, fair, very likeable. It’s probably why the Mets hired him away from the Nats this year. (Also a really nice guy when I met him as a kid).
I’ve considered as a table setter, Peter Orr before starting this season. Yes MAYBE I wince such a mistake. I hope strongly he should correct my error. Please Orr!
The only table setting Pete Orr will ever do is in a restaurant.
good… I wasn’t hearing things…
I was wondering the same thing, but settled with… it was getting late and I was starting to hear things! HAHA
Patterson and Soriano…glad we could help your stats
Well, I don’t think Bobby is conceding. I just think Bobby doesn’t want to take John too far tonight considering the complete game in his last start and the weather condition tonight.
Alex, thanks for reminding me Darling was with MASN last year. I forgot about that.
Didn’t I say don’t throw another fastball strike to Soriano?
AWESOME McCann!! BEAUTIFUL!
Oh, great play. I like that Brian!
These piece of crap Nats announcers just said that they will “look for the sweep Sunday night.”
Hey a–holes, you have to try and have RAMON ORTIZ actually win a game tomorrow before ‘going for the sweep’–makes me sick.
Even if they sweep, they can look back at this weekend and smile when they’re 10 games out in August
brad, not funny, though I like bread
I don’t know what that means.
I’m a fan of bread, myself.
Our line-up tonight is just putrid. Pete Orr is the worst leadoff hitter I can imagine.
Careful Stu, people here love pete orr. (but not me)
thanks Stu, dear
well at least brian mccann showed up
WooHoo… Brian 3-3
…too bad he can’t get any help! LOL
at least McCann knows what hes doing!
Brian, hon, I love the doubles. But whatever that ambiguous thing on your face is, it needs to go before it really comes in strong. It’s not doing it for you.
If Tony Pena Sr was watching, he wouldn’t be getting the FSN feed .. and he’d probably mute it before listening to you two clowns.
c’mon, rally time now…
hey diaz, take a pitch
Diaz looks completely clueless. He swings at absolutely everything.
Brian def needs a shave! HAHA… but hey if he performs with the scruff like he has tonight… I’m all for it! LOL …I’ve been complaining all night though everytime they show him! HAHA… I hate the scruff!
I take that back, swing away diaz: pete orr is next
speaking of clueless, ladies and gents, Pete Orr.
wow….never mind….:-)
thanks for making me look bad, pete. hey frank, think patterson’s tired?
Thanks Orr… wow …someone woke up… that’s two c’mon guys at least hit him in now and that’ll tie it!!
i live in northern georgia so i dont get the game; they canceled it for a hockey game. now its playing a replay and i just want to know what is going on right now. anyone else get this problem? its for northwest georgia and tennessee doesnt get the game at all.
I was about to give up on Orr!!!
hey Nats announcers, if we come back and win this game, are you going to prematurely hand US the sweep? huh?
We need this, Wilson.
no one happier to see patterson leave than langerhans…
Getyou some, Wilson!
I’m all for a wild pitch right here.
Can you guess that…Pena and Orr…
I’m sure Orr can bat…amen
I absolve you of a sin , Orr
c’mon Wilson
Which sin, b-rule?
Wilson, we will take a walk…good eye
One hit a week does not a major-leaguer make…
HIGH strike…pitiful call.
Yes!
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah baby
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wilson!! …tied game!!
WILSON!!!
Betemit needs to start learning first base in a hurry. He needs to play every day.
WILSON!
How do ya like THAT??
c’mon Langy!
what are the nats announcers saying?
What about a homer now!!!!Go Anduw!!!!!!!!
can somebody please keep me updated?
By the way, can anyone explained what happened to the great Matty Diaz we saw back in the Spring?
That curve was filthy.
Come on, Chuck, keep us tied.
Langerhans is pulling a Laroche tonight
Thank you Stanton, I know you miss being with the Braves.
By the way, the Nats announcers are the most brutal, most biased hacks I have ever heard. They defy logic they sound so stupid. I think 5,000 miles away, they have managed to make Vin Scully, cringe.
Diaz now facing major league hitters, not AAA callups. That and he gets about 3 at bats a week.
Ups I’m sorry!!
Alex, Diaz hardly had any playing time. Hey, he made that great throw on Sunday, I still remember that!
Actually Langy is worse than Adam tonight. Adam would usually only target for a 3Ks night.
They have said the Braves coming back is a SHOCKER about 500 times.
Apparently:
A) they have never watched a Braves game in the last 14 years
B) have failed to see any clips from our first 16 games this season
Oh yeah, we never ever get runs late…morons.
Diaz facing scouts!!
This feels like one of those games where we come back, then the bullpem blows it. don’t pitch to soriano, please
It’s hardly a shocker. What’s a shocker is that they have ramon ortiz in their rotation and mike stanton in their bullpen.
I am really tired of the Braves saying Betemit can’t play defense. All I ever see him do is make great plays at Short or Third.
Wilson is an awesome third baseman.
He’d be an even better 1st baseman =)
All I ever see him do is make great plays at Short or Third.
More at third than short, I think.
Betemit is better at third
I still think Stanton can be an effective reliever.
Ramon Ortiz…if we had all our regulars, we could get 10 runs off him. He’s pretty brutal.
He could be the anti-pena at first–no defense, all offense
Darn it.
I called it.
It meant ,”I forgive you Orr”, a television serial drama’s script, Stu. haha
NO! …c’mon don’t let him score
Brad,
AMEN. You read my mind.
Betemit for 1st Base…definitely…lets have him and Chipper in there.
And yup..it appears our ‘pen will be giving this game right back to the f-ng Natspos.
Who was the genius producer that said “hmm, high first camera would be great for that shot?”
Padres just tied up the Mets, 1-1 now in the 5th, SD still batting.
BTW, that Met kid Bannister has a nasty hook.
crap… and it just has to rain harder when we get out there!
we really should walk ward and go for a DP.
good call alex
…although schneider kills the braves
“Bobby Cox pacing … now takes a seat.” Thanks for the play-by-play Fox Sports douchebags.
I like the IBB.
They heard you, Alex.
hope we can turn a DP off of this pass
I smell a double coming…
Oh WHY, Bobby….Remlinger? Ok, its over. Now I concede this gm. to the Natspos.
Does anybody here actually think Remlinger will get out of this?
It’s totally awesome how Bobby doesn’t bring in Chuck James here.
Totally.
Bannister pitching in the 5th
4 H, 6 BB’s .. how in the heck do the Padres only have 1?
Double play…pleaseeeeeeeeeeee
o boy… it’s Rem now… C’mon!
Could be worse, could be reitsma
Stu, Sadly, no. If he does, it will be as big a miracle as Orr coming through.
LeCroy is the pride of hot dog eating contests, too.
Matthew Lecroy pinch hitting…frank robinson could have just neutralized bobby’s move with a worse one
LeCroy! LeCroy has power but not much else. The Nats have to be thinking sac fly with this move. Not much else good for them can come of this.
Unbelievable.
Why are they still playing in this crap?
dang it…
No response.
That’s worst than anything I imagine…
I take that back. A wet ball wild pitch scoring a run could come of this.
F’ing rain.
I just threw up in my mouth.
Thanks Bobby, for putting this piece of garbage in a Braves uniform so he could kill this game, rather then use Chuck James, your hottest reliever.
Bobby Cox, you are an OLD, STUBBORN, ANNOYING Manager.
This is why Cox drives me crazy.
Please tell me I am not alone.
I swear… why couldn’t we get to be batting in this crap and them in the field!
Remlinger stinks.
To me, bobby’s time was up 3 years ago. Time for some new blood, new attitude, new moves.
and yes, to be fair, its pouring…I cant believe the umps are allowing this game to be played in conditions like this.
You are not alone Alex.
Sometimes Bobby just makes me laugh, haha.
I’m with you Alex it was Chuck James’ time
Villareal in ..
By the way, a year ago today was the game the Braves trailed in the 9th in Washington on a very wet RFK turf when Guillen threw the ball away and we won on the errant throw.
Yeah, I don’t get why he went to Remlinger instead of James, who was warming up just last inning.
Still, this is partly on the umpires, who should have brought the players off the field when it started pouring.
But keep in mind, it wasnt bobby’s decision to sign remlinger and brian jordan
ESPN is laughing at us!!!!!!!!!!!
Ancient players like Jordan and Remlinger is Bobby’s biggest fault if you ask me. Yes, you need veteran leadership but thats why you have Chipper Jones and John Smoltz, NOT Remlinger and Jordan. Enough of their garbage.
That was ridiculous. I’m not even mad, I just can’t believe what I just saw.
No Brad, Bobby is still great. Without Bobby, there is no way the Braves can win the division title in the last two seasons. However, his in-game strategy has been highly questionable ever since 1991. So, we have been watching him making the same kind of decisions for the last freaking 15 years.
Why does Torborg still make excuses for everything?
We’re not like your crappy Marlins were. We expect to win.
Schuerholz signed them, not Bobby
Fox guy: “The chess match continues . . .”
Chess match? More like cripple fight.
And it was JS who didn’t fix the ‘pen either.
So the tapping noise is rain?
I thought it was Mike Remlinger’s bones popping as his old frame walked to the locker room.
I confess never want to be as a Brave, Remlinger.?.?
2 gone thank god! …lst and 3rd now …c’mon one more out!
One thing that really annoys me this year is that the Braves pitching keeps allowing runs immediately after the offense scores. That really sucks.
I wish Villarreal would put one in Soriano’s ear.
whats the score right now???
Bobby’s histiry is this continued stubborness, at the end of the day, to go old over young.
Mondesi and Jordan and Eddie Perez last year.
Jordand & Remy this year.
Choosing Remy over James tonight.
Hell…if you look back at our 2nd series of the year with the Giants, how many times did he intentionally walk Bonds? It’s not 2000 anymore…this Bonds is old, broken and can barely function.
But old stubborn, Cox…old man river, just had to walk him so we could get mauled by guys like Randy Winn & Pedro Feliz instead.
Remlinger could have throw it in his ear, just by mistake.
totally agree alex
Perfect ending.
My gosh.. and my friend IM’s me the pitch before: “walk him now” I say no. Boom.
again, unbelievable. actually wait, that’s completely believable.
Did I say don’t ever throw another fastball strikes to that kid?
Goodnight all.
OMG………. YOU’RE KIDDING!
I DID NOT JUST SEE THAT!
Great, one of the most selfish and BAD GUYS in Baseball has humiliated Braves pitching for tonight.
The terrorists have won tonight.
Great.
Villareal sucks too. Where was Chuck James? Where was Reitsma?
Good night, everyone.
ok, I just turned my MLB.tv off. I can’t watch this any longer…
I’m Sorry…I had been periodically checking the score tonite when I noticed that it was tied 3-3 in the bot 8th. So, I thought I’m gonna hop on the computer and see what’s going on. Well that was a waste of time.
Gosh, Soriano is killing us. WHY didn’t Bobby call intentional base on balls!!!!
I can NOT believe this…. an hour ago we tied this game… then went through 3 pitchers and we’re losing 7-3 now!
why did this happen? a combination of bobby cox and our bullpen. always a bad combo.
I have no idea why we didn’t pit him on and load the bases… it made sense to me… it’d been just as well if they had knocked one of them in… at least it wouldn’t have been a 3 run HR!
Alex R., I thought you didn’t like Reitsma. Or are you one of the few on here who actually doesn’t hate him?
Don’t we always seem to lose to the Expos/Nats the first series we play them, then own them the rest of the year? I seem to remember always losing to them at the beginning of the season?
Soriano CAN’T be that good. We were talking all offseason about how much he sucks and how stupid it was to trade Wilkerson for him.
Maybe not.
I don’t like reitsma. this is 2 years in a row that I don’t trust one single guy in our bullpen. thanks, JS
The guy’s got crazy power, always has.
Soriano had a similar game against us last year for Texas. First 2 times up were HRs, the next time he hit one off the fence, but he didn’t run it out, deciding to admire his work. Apparently, that was the final straw with Showalter.
oh and check it out now… IT AINT RAINING ANYMORE
It’s time for Andruw to hit a five-run homer!
Figures. I went to go talk to a friend in crisis and come back and now I’M the one in crisis. Will somebody please fix this #&@%^& bullpen!
Still here..
I don’t like Reitsma, at all.
But I like him better then Villareal & Remlinger.
Sorry to be graphic, but that’s like saying I like getting the flu over getting the measles or mumps.
well my night is complete. the mighty laroche has struck out.
2 outs 2 Ks… and both called last strikes… bad call esp on LaRoche
looked like andruw hurt his back on one of those swings. that’s all we need.
Come out here to Minnesota, Alex. You can get the mumps.
I originally was comparing worse illnesses but thought it might be offensive…besides, watching:
Bobby Manage
Our creaky bullpen
The Rain
The Nats commentators
…was terrible enough!
good night, all.
Bad Cox, bad pen, bad offense, bad weather, bad stadium, bad soriano. Bad night all around.
Personally, I think we’ve won 14 straight division titles DESPITE Cox, not because of him.
and I will argue this until I am blue in the face.
Oh well… it was a nice come back for a couple minutes then it all went south! hopefully we can win the next two games and move on!
…ump got in a groove of calling strikes there when they got back on the field… everything was a strike!
oh well… I’m out for the night!
Let’s go, Padres.
I’m watching the game, still 1-1, now top 7, Mets threatening with 2 outs but SD’s 1B just threw out a Met at the plate. Dead Met.
agree again alex
I think it’ll be interesting to see if the streak’s still going when Bobby retires (remember, his streak is one year longer with Toronto in ’85 (?). If it is but is broken the next year under the new manager, I think we’ll gain more appreciation for Cox and what he did. Even if we did win despite him, the fact still remains that it has been 14 straight titles. You’d think if he was so terrible he would have managed to blotch at least one of those. Especially one of the years where we only won by a few games.
Personally, I’m really glad that Bobby has been this “bad” for so long.
Having grown up with the Braves of the 1970s, I do not for a moment take Cox’s streak for granted.
But how about Soriano? Should the Braves fear him more than Utley?
Albery Pujols is Albert’s evil twin, by the way.
This is our bullpen and, as unpredictable as it is, we’re gonna have games like this. So you bring in James instead of Remlinger…doesn’t mean he’s going to succeed. Wish he had that chance, but if James threw a wild pitch, people would bitch about that, too.
SD 1, NYM 1, top 9, Hoffman pitching to Matsui with 2 outs & Floyd on first.
i’m pissed. over the last three years daryle ward has a .610 ops against lefties. chuck james is absolutely filthy against lefties. lance cormier? mike remlinger? not so much. so, bobby, why the hell not bring in james with one out and a guy on third to face ward with another lefty in schneider on deck? they want to let ward hit against james? tell your best strikeout pitcher in the bullpen to get you a strikeout. if they bring in the righty to face james, walk him and face schneider. if they hit for schneider, who cares? whoever it would have been would have been even worse than matt f. lecroy.
it’s unfuckingbelievable to intentionally walk (with a 1-1 count no less) a lefty hitter with a righty reliever when another lefty is on deck. why the hell not bring in the lefty to see if they’ll waste a pinch hitter? it’s lazy managing more than bad managing. nice job of completely wasting a three run eighth inning comeback, cox.
Mets/Pads in extras, still 1-1. Hoffman & Heilmann mowed ’em down in the 9th.
Cassidy in for SD, throwing gas.
Speaking of relief pitching, this NYM/SD game just went into Inning 14, still 1-1. These guys are going down like duckpins.
Nighty-night & Let’s Go Devils.
nick, first off, remlinger is good at inducing double play groundouts? i’d think he’d have done it more often over the years if that’s the case. the guy who was already out there was the best bet to induce a double play, but that isn’t even my point.
the point is ward is terrible against lefties. sure, he can hit a ball “nine miles,” and against james he might well have, but since he has exactly one homer against lefties over the last three seasons i’d take the superb odds against it. since he’s terrible against lefties, robinson probably would have pinch hit lecroy. then, walk lecroy and you have lefty/lefty in james/schneider; or, hell, allow james to pitch to fat ass lecroy, who strikes out an ungodly and obscene amount, and see what happens.
instead, cox pulled the intentional walk idea out of his ass, as if a hitter is much more likely to drive in a run from third with a 1-1 count as opposed to an 0-0 count.
if he’d have even just brought in remlinger to face ward it would have been alright. but cox’s decision-making was underwrought and faulty, and allowed frank robinson to dictate the matchup instead of the other way around.
I am just glad that McBride will be coming back soon. Tonight is the kind of moment which having McBride will be very helpful…assuming Bobby wouldn’t use Remlinger ahead of him…
