Fun Padres Fact: While it’s said that the colors of the old Padres uniforms were based upon McDonald’s hamburgers, if that were true they would have been gray and beige, not brown and gold.
Ok, so assuming no Renteria is out, which I think is a pretty safe assumption, what’s the lineup looking like today? I’m guessing:

The Braves have three of the nine NL players, by position, with the most game winning RBI since 2000:
Andrew Jones CF – 102 (leads NL)
Chipper Jones 3B – 79
Edgar Renteria SS – 55
No other team has more than one. Second behind Andruw is, no surprise, Albert Pujols (96).
The Braves also have two of the nine NL players, by position, with most hits since 2000:
Edgar Renteria SS – 1002
Chipper Jones 3B – 945
Again, no other team has more than one. Todd Helton leads the NL (1170).

You missed the point, our bench is depleted, there’s no reason to use another hitter in the 6th inning when Thompson is already hitting well. The marginal benefit of hitting Jordan or someone else versus the loss of another bench player with 3 innings left is not worth it.

Injury? These are athletes. Even though they are pitchers, they’ve been hitters all their lives up till professional baseball. There’s no greater risk of injury for them at the plate than any other routine baseball activity. Hard and set rules, like the one you described, are never the best policy. You have to go by the situation at hand. And we currently have a thin bench and 3 innings to play. If we end up going extra innings and need a pinch hitter in a crucial spots, you guys are going to look like even bigger chumps than you already do. Stick to baseball on the PS2, such “rules” might actually make you seem savy there.

Grst, stick to kindergarten where ad hominem insults are expected. I seriously doubt Cox let Thomson bat planning to pull him after only a couple of more pitches. Whether these guys are athletes is irrelevant to the risks inherent in a situation. What if he had gotten a hit? Would Cox have him running the bases while planning to pull him a couple pitches later? Absolutely not, the risks are too great for the little benefit of a couple more pitches. The outcome would have been having a pitcher hit just to have someone on the bench pinch run for him. That would be foolish, so the best explanation is that somebody saw something he didn’t like when Thomson was pitching to Giles.

I’m watching 2 games at once & I’m happily getting identical results:
Braves 3
Padres 0
Devils 3
Flyers 0
I don’t want to see HoRam back at all.
Braves ace John Thomson?
Thomson is looking great.
Thomson is throwing strikes like Maddux at his prime!
Me either, kc.
John Thomson is an unstoppable out machine.
Get Thomson to two strikes and let him swing!
I can’t believe it…
That’s just awesome. Todd Pratt steals a base. Lol
Pratt with the stolen base! We don’t need Furcal! Nice!
Mind if I drop in a very interesting tidbit I read in today’s Washington Post:
The Braves have three of the nine NL players, by position, with the most game winning RBI since 2000:
Andrew Jones CF – 102 (leads NL)
Chipper Jones 3B – 79
Edgar Renteria SS – 55
No other team has more than one. Second behind Andruw is, no surprise, Albert Pujols (96).
The Braves also have two of the nine NL players, by position, with most hits since 2000:
Edgar Renteria SS – 1002
Chipper Jones 3B – 945
Again, no other team has more than one. Todd Helton leads the NL (1170).
…and the catcher is not Piazza!
Well, the NL catcher with the most game winning RBI since 2000 IS Piazza with 64. The NL catcher with most hits since 2000 is his replacement, Paul LoDuca with 769.
When Andruw got hit by a pitch yesterday I cheered because whenever that happens he seems to get so pissed off that he goes on a tear. He has another level that he plays at following a HBP, I’m almost sure of it. The stolen bases and generally aggressive play are making me believe it even more.
All right, Adam made contact!!!
petty grievances, only 3-0
“I’ve had enough of this crap! McDowell has to go!”
Remember those days?
Wow, Thomson is just cruising, and the Pads aren’t even hitting the ball hard today.
It’s just a shame that the hyped rotation of Smoltz, Hudson, Hampton, and Thomson is not able to stay healthy together for these two years.
Well, right now, I’m happy that we’re cobbling together 2 consecutive outstanding starts. If we can make it 3 (with Sosa), we’ve got a story.
Skip Carey and Joe Simpson were mocking internet blogs and talk radio for spending the first few weeks attacking Roger McDowell.
Six innings of near perfect pitching, and he gets pulled for firsty-firsty.
First batter, HR.
Thomson needs to get his endurance up in a hurry.
B. Giles did not look like he hit that ball hard. It just kept going..
yikes
um….., Ray isn’t fooling anyone today.
Ray’s not exactly foolin’ ’em today.
Ah, bullpen.
we still got the lead.
Here we go again.
What on earth is Bobby thinking? How many pitches Thomson have thrown?
Thank goodness Thome is out of our division
Who believes we’re gonna win this game? bet 10:1 we don’t.
I guess Thomson is on a 75-pitch limit…
Thomson threw 74 pitches btw.
Lets hope Villereal doesn’t get a win this time.
haha vulture wins, i’ve never heard that before.
I’ll take a win any way we can get it.
I don’t think McDowell had a lot to do with Smoltz going 9 last night … he’s a veteran who put the team on his back. Thompson looked good today, but the game is far from over. Now, let’s see whether McDowell’s staff can help us keep this one in the W column.
God I hate this bullpen.
I say Villareal gets Vulture Victory #5.
We know Ray will have a bad game sooner or later…
why are they trying to make a positive out of Villereal blowing leads and then getting wins?
make that Villareal’s Vulture Victory V
My question is: Why did John Tompson bat in the bottom of the 6th before being replaced in the top of the 7th????? Makes no sense.
I hope he is not injured, which would also explain why he left after just 75 pitches of perfect ball.
Villareal didn’t blow this lead, Ray did. Villareal faced 4 batters and got 2 fly balls, a walk and a strike out. If he gets a W, it’s not a vulture.
I said we need more scores!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thomson’s labor comes to nothing?.?
Seeing as how most of our “bench” is currently in the game because of injuries, and thomson is hitting so well, why would you pinch hit for him?
You mean Thopson is a better hitter than Jordan?
Absent post-season wierdness, you do not put your starter at the plate if you plan to pull him. Too many things can go wrong, especially injury.
You missed the point, our bench is depleted, there’s no reason to use another hitter in the 6th inning when Thompson is already hitting well. The marginal benefit of hitting Jordan or someone else versus the loss of another bench player with 3 innings left is not worth it.
Frank, there are only three players on the bench besides McCann. Bobby wouldn’t use a pinch hitter with no one on base.
Exactly, Jeff.
…and Frank, you may be right, Thomson is very possibly a better hitter than Jordan.
kc, I like your sense of humor.
Absent post-season wierdness, you do not put your starter at the plate if you plan to pull him. Too many things can go wrong, especially injury.
Pinch hit for LaRoche here.
Now Jordan should pinch-hit!
Oh, good, they are.
oh man, no 3Ks game for Adam…what a pity…
There he is! Bobby is a genius. Only Bochy is going to get to a righthander.
Gosh, It’s an intentional walk
They let Thomson hit because 1) they didn’t want to burn the bench and 2) Thomson can hit.
Can’t believe I’m saying this, but I like this PH move with Jordan. LaRoche can look helpless against LHPs.
Now we should use our lefty pinch-hitter. Oh, wait.
There’s no greater risk of injury for them at the plate than any other routine baseball activity
That might be the biggest nonsense I had to read all season.
Prediction: groundout to shortstop by Jordan to end the inning.
McCann, Mac. McCann is the lefty pinch hitter today.
LoL Mac.
No way Bobby is using McCann unless Pratt is hurt.
Yeah, the Lord of the Rings is a laugh riot, TBS.
I still like the LaRoche-Embree matchup much better than the Jordan-Linebrink matchup…
Strikeout! Looked outside!
GOOD JOB JORDAN%^#$%&*
YOU, BOBBY takes too seriously
not a very good play in the outfield that time x.x
Let’s get a good AB, Frenchy…
It’s actually a pretty good outing for Remlinger…
“Astros roll behind magic Wandy.”
That has to be the single worst MLB headline of all time.
And I think Wandy sounds like something obscene, as in “I can’t have kids because I took a soccer ball to the wandy.”
/random tangent
Someone’s been messing around on IRC.
Hard and set rules, like the one you described, are never the best policy.
Haha
At least Andruw will have one last chance…
Man, Orr has some bad at-bats. He swings at everything. I’d never throw him a strike on the first pitch.
I can’t believe this is happening. Thomson was looking like Maddux out there. I’m not going to freak out because Ken Ray blew the lead, though. The bad thing is our bench is totally depleted now. Wasn’t McCann our last bench player?
Rob, Bobby still have little Tony Pena Jr…if you count him as a hitter…
Hey, who said Orr couldn’t play third base?
It has been a bad day overall for Bobby. Not that I don’t understand his decision, but none of his moves works for him today…
As Milo Hamilton used to say, “Gotta go get ’em, Braves, here in the 9th…”
Man, I don’t wanna face this guy. Not one bit. Trevor Hoffman: owner of one of the greatest changeups ever.
Nooooo!
Ryan made it, damn it!
Now I wish LaRoche was up.
Yeah, Jordan = End of Game.
Spoke too soon.
Let’s win it, Frenchy!
Holy deal with the devil, Batman! Brian Jordan just got a hit!
No way!!!
I’ll take it.
Man, Hoffman just toyed with him.
Damn it. Giles and Langerhans hit the ball really, really hard, and then Andruw and even Brian Jordan singled.
And we still lost. Damn it.
Missed that hanging changeup…that was the chance right there…
To be a little critical on Frenchy.. that was a pitiful AB.
Hoffman hung two pitches, and both were hit into the catchers mitt….
oh well.
I officially hate Pete Orr. Hate his overrated, scrappy ass. He’s Keith Lockhart with speed, including the job security in the Braves organization.
Folks, get set for a very ugly few days for our team in NYC. Hate to say it . . .
