Hudson allowed two unearned. Blaine Boyer threw BP. Cesar Crespo sucks — why is he playing? Andruw made an error.

Once again, while I was finally getting over my negative feelings for the WBC & starting to enjoy the action a little bit, I was given another downer on the thing.
Do you realize that for the USA to advance to the next round, they need Korea to beat Japan OR for Japan to beat Korea BUT NOT SCORE MORE THAN 7 RUNS DOING IT.
So, by virtue of this “complicated tiebreaking system,” if Japan scores 6 runs in the first inning, they must intentionally halt themselves from scoring & keep the other team from coming back. If Japan scores run #7, they can’t advance to the next round.
I’m sorry, but asking a team not to play its best is beyond ridiculous. Again, this is not real baseball.
wouldn’t japan scoring the seventh run eliminate the US, and not themselves? i mean, in the prior paragraph you said the us needs japan to win whilst scoring less than six runs, yes? so, the inverse of that would be japan needs to win and score seven runs to advance.
Devine pitched well again today – 1 IP, 1 BB, 1 K. Smoltz gave up a bomb but his line looked okay otherwise.
How has John Thomson been? I’m not sure if the injury to his finger will have any lingering effects for this year.
Check that, it’s 8.
From ESPN.com:
“If Japan beats Korea, the Americans could be eliminated from contention even before playing Mexico. That would happen if Japan wins in a nine-inning game and scores seven runs or less because of the complicated tiebreaker system being employed.”
So, in the event of a Japan victory, the US would be eliminated only if Japan scores 7 runs or less. But if Japan wins & scores more than 7, Japan can’t advance.
Goofy, huh?
john thompson has been a real turd.
If anyone has ESPN Insider and needs a good deed before Easter, I’d appreciate it if you’d copy the article on Georgia football and email it to me.

thank you.
That’s wrong, ububba. If Japan scores more than seven, it’s Korea that is in danger of not advancing.
If that’s the case, then I stand corrected on that point.
Nonetheless, the tiebreaking system is so silly & convoluted that it’s yet to be clearly explained by ESPN or anyone else.
The WBC shouldn’t be like soccer, which has the “unique” tradition of goal-differential tiebreakers; it should be like baseball. But it’s not.
I learned about it from King Kaufman on salon.com. He had a pretty good explaination/critique.
If first tiebreaker is okay, actually, but the second and third are completely bogus. After runs prevented per nine innings, you get ERA. So, what, you’re penalized for having a good defense? Then, after that, it’s batting average. Not runs scored. Whatever.
