ESPN.com – MLB – Atlanta group is leading candidate to buy Braves
I’ve never heard of Ron Terwilliger before. He’s the President and CEO of Trammell Crow Residential. MLB wants local ownership, and apparently prefers personal ownership, and he’d fill both needs. This would be as part of a group, though Terwilliger has the assets to make the purchase solo if needed.
There is no way I won’t call him Sideshow Ron if he buys the team.
Dang it! You beat me to the Sideshow Bob joke! How dare you!
But yeah, he’s definitely Sideshow Ron if he buys the team.
Please enlighten the uninitated. Who is sideshow Ron?
Sideshow Bob (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sideshow_Bob) shares a surname with the proposed buyer. Therefore…
No relation to Wayne Terwilliger, I take it?
Funny, Wayne Terwilliger was my first thought, too.
When I was a kid, way before “The Simpsons,” Terwilliger managed our hometown Columbus Astros, a AA Southern League team.
so if this happens does it mean more money for the braves to play with? what do yall think of this?
good news… john foster might need tommy john surgery
Hey ya’ll – I had a chance to see the Braves battle the Dodgers today at Disney. Smoltz looked great as the starter.Pratt started the game at catcher, but Salty got into the game in the eighth, as did Schuerholz (sp?). Both did well, getting on base and scoring in the inning, before Bobby brought on Devine to close out the game. Great game, enjoyed by all. My boys got autographs and a picture with Anthony Lerew. I am pleased to report he was really great – very nice and willing to take pictures with many as well as spend long time signing and talking with the fans. Great Spring Break Day!!!
Naval Academy and Habitat for Humanity. I bet Ron T. and Jimmy Carter are buddies. I’m guessing that this would be better than some corporation that’s just looking for a way to dump T-W stock
If he’s down with Jimmy Carter & Habitat, I’m a fan already.
Question re: Lerew-
I’ve heard him mentioned as a potential candidate for closer. I figured the Braves wouldn’t want him to do anything but start, but I wanted to know if anyone else has heard anything.
Ububba,
Did you know that Wayne Terwilliger just now retired…He’s been managing the Fort Worth Cats (in my area) for the last few years…
Here’s an excerpt from their website:
Manager Wayne Terwilliger, who led the team to the 2005 Central Baseball League championship, has decided to retire after more than five decades in the game.
Enough from the useless facts…now on to important information–how’s Erin Andrews doing?
ububba,
The New York Times ran a profile on Terwilliger back in December. If you’re a subscriber, you can probably access the archive for free.
So I’m in the middle of The Mind of Bill James, and I have to say, I like it a lot, at least when the author focuses on James and not on reviewing his books. The guy has interesting, thought-provoking things to say about practically everything. The 3-page tangent about JonBenet Ramsey threw me for a loop, though.
Lerew was considered a darkhorse candidate for the closer job going into spring training because he has has the good fastball. He pitched well at the start and the closer talk started heating up until he faltered quite a bit. He will probably go down to the minors and start again but the Braves know that they can put him in the bullpen if need be.
WBC Spoiler Alert:
Korea beats Japan 2-1. US advances to “final 4” with Korea, Cuba & Dominican Republic.
The Japanese never thought the Koreans are good enough to beat them, but the Koreans managed to beat them twice.
I thought the U.S. still needed to beat Mexico to advance.
And is anybody pitching better than Korea? Good gosh, they’ve given up 8 runs in 6 games. They don’t score very much, but with pitching like that you don’t need to.
Yeah, the U.S will advance if they beat (or tie) Mexico.
Also, I think if the U.S. loses 1-0, they advance on tiebreaks. Here’s how I think it breaks down:
If the U.S. wins, they’re in.
If the U.S. ties, they’re in.
If Mexico scores 1 in a win, the U.S. is in.
If Mexico scores 3 or more in a win, the U.S. is out.
Now for the retarded second and third tiebreaks:
If Mexico scores 2 in a win and both are earned runs, the U.S. is out.
If Mexico scores 2 in a win and both are unearned runs, the U.S. is in.
If Mexico scores 2 in a win and one is unearned, the U.S. is probably in. I’m not sure if a no-hitter by the Mexicans would drop the U.S. BA low enough to be out.
Amend that, US can advance.
And Korea is 6-0.
That’s a great analysis Joey. Thanks for the clarification. I highly doubt the Mexico team is good enough to beat the US if they can’t manage to beat either Japan or Korea.
On the other hand, we never know which US team will show up…
I forgot:
If Mexico scores 2 in an extra innings win, the U.S. is in.
That still falls under the first tiebreaker.
The Japanese never thought the Koreans are good enough to beat them, but the Koreans managed to beat them twice.
Well……Do you know the Asian baseball enough?
I think cooperation among the Koreans members is the first prerequisite for victory. They know each other well from the college to the national team. The Koreans and the Japanese have a strong sense of rivalry. The two rivals are constant trying to outdo each other. But the Japanese maybe don’t think so. I’m sure the Koreans’ve got the power still more, though.–sorry for the off topic
I don’t know… Coming in, I knew that the Koreans were familiar with each other and had mostly played together before in international competition. But it’s not basketball, it’s baseball, and the primary activity (pitcher versus batter) is an individual confrontation. But it sure looks like the Koreans have an advantage on the rest of the field.
Thread hijack alert.
Please tell me the most likely upset in the NCAA tourney.
Please don’t let it be Indiana!
Wayne Terwilliger is also briefly mentioned, slightly mockingly, in “Ball Four.”
Terwilliger was at the Naval Academy when Roger Staubach was there. Staubach worked with Trammell Crow (the man and the company) when he stopped playing football. The man, Trammmell Crow, sold out his business in the 1990’s, but it kept his name. Staubach now has a separate real estate and consulting business, Staubach & Company. Obviously, Terwilliger has all sorts of sports connections.
John Smoltz plays Augusta with Tiger.
USNA undergrad; harvard business school. I would say he will be our smartest owner, and that is a good thing.
Jimmy Carter has never met a dictator he didn’t like.
