From today’s NY Times Sutter/HoF Story:
“Right now, I don’t think I’ll ever get in,” Gossage said. “Why would I feel good about this? Because Sutter got in, that’s supposed to help me? Let me tell you, I don’t have to take a back seat to anybody.”
Gossage’s disappointment after being bypassed in his seventh year on the ballot was obvious. In a 22-year career in which he saved 310 games and had a 124-107 record, he is most remembered for being a feared closer with a blazing fastball for the Yankees. But Gossage says he thinks he has been unfairly compared to modern closers, who typically pitch one inning per outing.
When Gossage was relieving, he often came in as early as the seventh inning. Now, closers are reserved for the ninth and, sometimes, parts of the eighth. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Gossage averaged 1.64 outs in games he finished, while Sutter averaged 1.52. The Yankees’ Mariano Rivera averages 1.08.
“I was a pioneer in how the bullpen is used today,” Gossage said. “I did the work it takes three guys to do today. Don’t compare what Mariano does today to what I did. It’s two different positions.”
Steve Pyzik got an invite? Steve Pyzik?? He’s a catcher, you know. He bounced between Rome, Myrtle Beach, Mississippi last year. Plus Clint Sammons, another catcher. Are there so many catchers because there will be lots of pitchers? I suppose that makes sense. Okay, I may have talked my way into understanding…..
As a former high school catcher, I know that our varsity had all of our catchers come out for our pitcher/catcher work. I think this is maybe the same for the Braves, maybe. Also, didn’t we give McCann, Francoeur, etc the same taste last spring training? Just a couple thoughts.
It’s very simple: give LaRoche a complete year as a starter. Sink or swim. If he swims, and does it well…then you address the issue during the 2006 off season. If he sinks, Salty learns first base during the off season and competes for the job during the spring next year. I don’t think promoting Salty this year is a good idea…no matter what the injury situation is (even if it’s as bad as last seasons ordeals were). We can only get so lucky by promoting these 20, 21 year old kids…and not warping one of them when they don’t produce (which I think could have easily happened to Marte last season).
we need this guy on the team just to see them get his name on the back of his jersy
I couldn’t agree more, Andy, especially about LaRoche. I say knock off this platoon crap and give him a shot full time. I actually think he’d do a decent job.
