Is it me or does it seem that Jim Rice is getting a ton of publicity for the HOF this year? I never really followed the American League, but isn’t he an all around inferior player compared to Andre Dawson and even Dale Murphy for that matter? He was a good hitter but his numbers aren’t much better (with the exception of OPS) than Dawson’s or Murphy’s and he was a poor fielder who stole very few bases. Murphy and Dawson were gold glovers. Dawson stole over 300 bases and Murphy was a 30-30 man. I understand Murphy flamed out pretty early and is borderline for the HOF, but Dawson stayed around long enough to put up more impressive all around numbers. Why doesn’t he get more press? Why hasn’t he made it already? Rice will probably make it in this year and Dawson and Murphy will probably be left out. Just goes to show you the main stream sports writers are morons.
If I had Hudson money I would create a Tennessee Vols amusment park. I would have the Erik Ainge, “Throw it over the target” toss game. The “Catch the Ball without using your thumbs” game. and the “Instead of tackling, just touch this tackling dummy.”

Ok I was reading Jenny’s friends at SOsH (slow day at work) and they were talking about sending Arroyo for Langerhans. Then they said Langerhans wasn’t a centerfeilder (they made it sound like he wasn’t that good of a defender.)

I think the Braves missed the boat with Nomar. Our first base situation is dire. We have a poor imitation of Klesko with no Brian “the Beaver” Hunter to platoon.
If I’m reading the same thread you were, Smitty, ONE GUY said that he READ that Langerhans wasn’t a “true center fielder.” That’s a bit different than what you were saying, don’t you think? 🙂

The argument for or against Rice is a little different than that of Dawson/Murphy. Rice has much better rate stats than Dawson or Murphy. He was a better hitter for average and power, and has superior RC/27. He played 16 seasons to Dawsons 21, whic his more an explanation of Dawsons counting stats than a slap at Rice. Murph had a slightly better peak, but Rice was very good for 10 straight seasons. Rice has a better peak than Dawson, and was definitely the best player in the AL in ’78. Dawson was never the best player in his league, Schmidt should have won in ’82, and had a case in ’83 over Murph, albeit it was no great sin for Dale to get it that year. Schmidt played in a much tougher park to hit in, but I’ll grant Dale’s positional adjustment closes any offensive gap for that year.
Thing is, the press rightly or wrongly, hated Rice, and there is some debate over whether he is a Fenway creation. I think there’s a bit of overcorrection going on now, what with the crying over steroids and all. I don’t think Rice will get in though, but it wouldn’t bother me either way – depends if you are a big Hall person or not. To me, Rice just misses the peak, and his career totals as well – but he’s still a better choice than Dawson or Murphy
Although Rice is surely borderline, personally, I’d put him in the HoF before Murphy or Dawson. Rice had more peak years than the other 2, & he certainly was one of the very best offensive players of his era. When Rice was playing, I damn-sure thought I was watching a future HoFer.
Murphy, as we all know, peaked between 1981-87, while Dawson was the classic “compiler” of stats with very few off-the-charts seasons (eg.-lotsa 70-80 RBI seasons).
From what I understand, Rice was extremely difficult with sportswriters & fans. The HoF voting seems to be the writers’ revenge.

I think Dale has a case for 1987. His OPS was 100 points higher than Dawson, he had dawson beat in batting average, doubles, steals, and had 44HR to the Hawk’s 49. The only category that sunk murphy was RBI, which has a lot more to do with the team you are on, not necessarily the player. How the hell Murphy finished 11th, I’ll never know.
Murph could have won the 5 MVPs, if he had been on some decent teams. RBI are over rated, but I think a lot of MVP voters look closly at that stat and Murph didn’t have anyone hitting in front of him. But without Murph the Braves would have been in last place anyways, so he really wasn’t the MOST valuable player, but he was one of the tope five players in the league between 82-87.

Doubledawg makes a nice point, but I’d go with that Clark guy. OPS 1.055/OPS+ 176 is just a mammoth season in the non Bonds/Ruth division.

Wow, that was really mean. The guy’s 20-year-old son died last year, and he’s on anti-depressants and heart medication. From what I hear, he’s mentally unstable and was out of his mind when he robbed the jewelry store. Maybe we should try being sympathetic, because I honestly don’t think he knew what he was doing.
And you know he’s probably pawned his World Series ring, among other memorabilia from his days as a player. I mean, why would you try to knock off a jewelry store if you weren’t hard up for cash?

Im not buying his argument. A colleague had a client who shot his unfaithful wife, while under the influence of heart medicine, anti-depressants, the little blue pills, and a few glasses of wine. no doctor in the land was willing to testify that his cocktail of drugs had any effect on his ability to know his actions were wrong.
The type of anti-depressants that kill sons and lead to knocking off jewelry stores arent prescription.

Incest porn is hard to ban because they use normal language to describe unspeakable acts. But I know that some of those drugs are supposed to be on the list. For some reason, the list doesn’t work on Joey.
Rice in Hall yes, Dawson no. Me not in Grammar Hall of Fame. Spike, I appreciate the nod to Schmidt for the ’82 MVP. He was my favorite player growing up, and I always thought he deserved it over Murph in ’82 (but not ’83).
