Ha. I nice victory stolen from the jaws of defeat.

Oh yea of little faith. For all of the whining about Andruw and Smoltz, they helped the cause just fine tonight. Chipper still doesn’t hit well in the 4 spot, and the lineup was done using a dartboard, but it worked. Here’s my guy to pick up; Craig Wilson from the Pirates. He can play 1st, he’s having a good season, he hits to all fields, he can play multiple positions, he’s only making $1.15 million with a one year contract, and he may not be eligible for arbitration yet. Only downside is does strike out a good bit. Give the Pirates Mark Derosion, Juan Cruz and an autographed picture of John Smoltz. They could trade the picture to the Royals for Juan Gonzalez.
I thought they’d scratch a run across, but I figured if they’d win it would take a long while. Guess not.
The time to get Wilson would have been this offseason. Now that he’s finally playing and the Pirates have seen what he can do, he’s not going anywhere.

I hate to quibble, but:
Chipper still doesn’t hit well in the 4 spot
It may not show up in the boxscore, but Chipper may have had the four hardest hit balls all night. He was smacking it all over the ballpark, and looked great.

The Pirates would have to be insane to trade him, given this contract situation.

I don’t know. With the recent 1-14 slide and their place in the cellar of the Central very secure right now, they may move him for pitching, which they deperately need. They have lost 9 in a row and 14 of 15 and they are talking about roster moves. To get pitching, they are going to have to give up one of those guys. Who would take Kendall with his salary. I’d take any of the 3 2001 Rookies (J Wilson, C Wilson or Mackowiak) and give them a couple of pitchers (Cruz, Smith) and a prospect or Almanza.
