No…and as they shouldn’t. Two very different cases. Bigot vs. Idiot Choice of Language.
Except, as I pointed out, Shockey has a history of using homosexuality as a slur. Bigots are bigots.
I’m not sure it’s the same. Shockey’s use was more on the lines of poor choice of language than it’s gay-bashing or ethnic-bashing. It’s weird, but it’s different to be a bigot and hate someone because of their religion, sexual preference, race, or ethnicity and to use language like “homo” as a slur. It ultimately means that he may or may not have a very negative opinion of gay people, but it doesn’t come close to calling a black player a “fat monkey” and Rocker’s other choice words about the subway. If we called everyone who use the term “faggot” or “homo” or “queer” a bigot, the vast majority of people would be bigots.
Not that I’m defending Shockey. He’s an idiot.
By the way, I really don’t know about his past comments so I could be seriously off and if I had the time, I’d probably look this up further. So if Shockey has shown legitimate hatred, he should be given, as you say, the “Rocker treatment.” Only thing is homosexuality bashing doesn’t have nearly the same support as race and ethnicity bashing so the outcry would still be on a smaller scale.
