– MLB – Recap – Braves at Reds – 05/21/2003

See, this is what happens when you walk a bunch of people. Sooner or later, you give up a couple of extra-base hits to go along with them, and you give up six runs in an inning. The Braves led 3-0 entering the bottom of the fourth, and trailed 6-3 leaving it. Along the way, Mike Hampton’s ERA rose to 4.31 after an outing in which he walked five and struck out none. He got help from Kevin Gryboski, who entered with the bases loaded and the score tied and then gave up a bases-clearing double. Jung Bong gave up three late runs to create the final score.

The Braves’ offense didn’t rally this time, and was basically shut down by the Reds’ pen. Vinny (2-3 with a double and a walk, up to .290, everyone’s Hacking Mass team is doomed) didn’t get any support this time. The Braves did wind up with eight hits, but it wasn’t enough.

Shane Reynolds goes tonight against Ryan Dempster. I’m putting the over/under on combined runs scored at 18 1/2. The Braves try to avoid being swept, and Bobby tries to avoid being ejected in every game of the series.
