Of course, it should be noted that most of the advanced defensive stats I’ve seen ranked Rey Rey as a thoroughly brilliant defensive shortstop, as recently as 2001. (IIRC, Baseball Prospectus had him as saving something like 47 runs defensively in that season, one of the highest figures in a long, long time.) He’s older now, and I suspect he’s declining, but still, he’s a solid defensive player.

So essentially they paid all that money to Tampa Bay just to unload Rey O’s attitude…
