5/9/98: The Braves have split the first two games of their showdown with the Padres, losing last night when Tom Glavine’s old problems with giving up lots of first-inning runs resurfaced. The odd thing is that the Padres on paper don’t look very good right now. Gwynn is Gwynn, and Greg Vaughn is contributing, but Steve Finley is off to an awful start and their infield is mostly rejects; Chris Gomez at short surrounded by Ed Giovanola, whom the Braves didn’t want anymore, and Archi Cianfranco in place of Caminiti.

The Braves have activated Danny Bautista and sent Damon Hollins down. Hollins is a better player than Bautista, but in the role they’re stuck in it doesn’t matter all that much.
